More than five decades after it topped the charts, Bread's "Make It with You" remains the only song by the soft rock group to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, a record that still sets it apart in the band's long list of hits.

Written by lead singer David Gates and released in June 1970, the song climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending August 22, 1970. It stayed at No. 1 for one week, but its impact lasted far longer. Fifty-six years later, the track continues to be one of the best-known songs from the soft rock era.

"Make It with You" first appeared on Bread's second album, On the Waters. The single became the group's first Top 10 hit and helped push the album to No. 12 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Billboard later ranked the song as the No. 13 song of 1970. It also earned a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America after selling more than one million copies in the United States.

The song was also successful outside America, reaching No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart and charting in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and other markets.

Although Bread placed 13 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1970 and 1977 and scored six Top 10 hits, "Make It with You" remained the band's only chart-topper.

Other major hits included "Baby I'm-a Want You," which reached No. 3, "If" at No. 4, "Everything I Own" at No. 5, and "Lost Without Your Love," which peaked at No. 9.

Bread's Signature Soft Rock Classic

David Gates wrote the song and recorded nearly all of the instruments heard on the track. According to the recording credits, Gates handled lead and harmony vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, and strings.

Drummer Mike Botts was the only other member of Bread to appear on the recording.

The lyrics used gentle language and soft melodies to deliver a romantic message that listeners quickly connected with.

The song includes the lines:

"And if you're wondering what this song is leading to
I want to make it with you"

The meaning of the phrase sparked discussion when the song was released. While many listeners saw it as a romantic proposal, the wording remained open enough to avoid problems with radio censors during the era.

The record's smooth sound also helped define the growing soft rock movement of the early 1970s, placing Bread alongside artists who dominated FM radio during the decade, according to American Songwriter.

The success of "Make It with You" helped establish Bread as one of Los Angeles' leading soft rock acts.

The band, led by Gates alongside Jimmy Griffin and Robb Royer, had struggled to gain attention with its 1969 debut album. The breakthrough single changed that quickly and turned Bread into a major name in popular music.

Bread followed the hit with several successful singles and albums throughout the decade, including Manna, Baby I'm-a Want You and Guitar Man.

Still, none of the group's later releases matched the chart achievement of "Make It with You."

The song's legacy has continued through numerous cover versions over the years.

Among the most notable was Aretha Franklin's version, which appeared on her 1971 live album Aretha Live at Fillmore West. Other artists who later recorded the song included Claudine Longet, Ralfi Pagan, the Pasadenas, Let Loose, and Filipino folk-pop band Ben&Ben, whose version became the theme for the television series of the same name.

The song also carries a memorable family story from Gates' early success.

When the singer returned to his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, after the record reached No. 1, his mother celebrated the achievement but misunderstood the title of the song, per Songfacts.

She told reporters that she could not understand why her son had named his new hit "Naked With You."

For a band that produced a long list of radio favorites, "Make It with You" remains the one that reached the summit first and the only one that ever did.

Actor Dean Butler, who played Almanzo Wilder in the original Little House on the Prairie television series, just gave his opinion regarding Netflix's recent take on Laura Ingalls Wilder's book series.

People magazine reported that Butler took to his Instagram account on July 15 to discuss Netflix's Little House on the Prairie, which was released on July 9. At the start of the Instagram video, Butler shared that he recently began "watching with interest the new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie." Butler said that he appreciated the new show's musical moments within the Ingalls family's household.

"Something that I think is really wonderful about this is the family singing that is going on. Writers have rolled in songs that Pa played on his fiddle and the family is singing along, and they are doing it beautifully. And this is really the spirit of Laura's book," said Butler, who began starring as Laura Ingalls' (Melissa Gilbert) eventual husband during the original show's sixth season, which premiered in 1979.

Butler then complimented the new show's stars and compelling visuals.

"This is a very appealing cast, the show is beautifully produced, pictures are gorgeous. There is a lot of good stuff going on here," said the actor, now 70.

In an exclusive December 2025 interview with Parade magazine, alongside his former castmate Alison Arngrim, who played Nellie Oleson, Butler shared why he believes fans are still drawn to the original Little House on the Prairie series, which had a nine-season run until 1983. He explained that he believed each episode was a morality story, with a “clear delineation of what is good and what may perhaps not be so good."

“Little House provides foundational lessons for how to live a good and decent life. Walnut Grove, either in the books or in the series, is its own little world that people step into to discover a kind of a decency and humanity that doesn’t go away,” said Butler while speaking to Parade.

Beck is returning with new music, and he's bringing some familiar faces along with him.

The Grammy winner announced his new studio album, Ride Lonesome, set for release Sept. 18 through Capitol Records. It marks his first new record since 2019's Hyperspace.

Ride Lonesome is also a reunion between Beck and several musicians with whom he toured years ago and who helped record some of his most well-known records, including Sea Change, Morning Phase and Mutations. The returning collaborators include Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Jason Falkner. Nigel Godrich, who previously worked with Beck on Sea Change and Mutations, returned to mix the album.

The singer-songwriter commented on the process, saying in a statement, "It had been a decade since we went in the studio and recorded Morning Phase. This time It felt like the playing and the chemistry had evolved and deepened— a sound that’s come together over the decades of working together."

"While we were revisiting a musical and physical place, it also felt like we were finding new sounds and emotional textures along the way," he concluded.

The tracklist for Lonesome Ride is as follows, "Ride Lonesome," "Run Away," "In The Night," "Failed Words," "Bleed," "Disappearing Act," "For Your Love," "Slow Canyon," "It Ends Right Here," "Falling Through My Hands," "If You Don’t Know What Love Is" and "Beyond The Light."

Beck released the first single from the album, the title track "Lonesome Ride," in early 2026. At the same time as the album announcement, he released another single from the upcoming record called "In The Night." The music video was directed by Mikai Karl and stars French actor Denis Lavant.

The new album will be supported by a North American tour in late 2026. It begins with the first stop in Vancouver, Canada, on Sept. 16, continuing with performances into October. Several dates have already sold out.

When they told Ashley about this, however, she decided to report this information to others, even naming the group of people who were going to keep her. When word got back to the majority, their opinion on her soured like a badly-mixed appletini. Feeling she could not be trusted moving forward, the entire house came together to say "Happy trails" to Ashley Trail.

Loudon Wainwright III is heading back on tour, and it's been nearly two decades in the making.

The Grammy-winning hitmaker will return to Australia and New Zealand in February 2027 for the first time in almost 20 years for a seven-date tour. The trek will stop in Auckland, Wellington, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. Wainwright announced the news to fans on July 16 on social media.

Tickets for the highly anticipated upcoming tour are going on sale soon, with a presale starting on Wednesday, July 22, at 11 a.m. local time. The general sale starts at the same time on Friday, July 24.

For fans in the region, the upcoming shows offer a rare chance to catch one of folk music's most respected songwriters in an intimate theater setting. Considering he hasn't visited the area to perform in almost two decades, anyone eager to catch a show from Wainwright should try to get tickets to one of these seven stops.

Some fans of Wainwright shared their excitement about the 2027 tour in the comments on his Instagram post. One simply wrote, "OMG." Others said, "Loudon! The Australian crawl! Wish i could be there," and "Thank you thank you thank you for coming to Perth!"

The last time Wainwright performed in Australia was back in 2008. He went on an extensive tour of the country, performing with his daughter, fellow musician Lucy Wainwright Roche. Fans of the folk icon have been eager to welcome him back to the region for a long time now.

Wainwright first broke out in the music industry in the 1970s. His only major chart hit was 1972's "Dead Skunk," which was a single from his record called Album III. While the song was originally released in 1972, it didn't find success on music charts until the next year, when it peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Alan Walden, the music manager, promoter and publisher who helped launch the careers ofLynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band and Otis Redding, has died. He was 83.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Walden died Thursday, July 16, in Macon, Georgia, after spending several weeks in hospice care. His daughter Jessica Walden confirmed his death.

Walden was one of the architects of Southern rock long before the genre became a national phenomenon. Alongside his older brother Phil Walden, he helped build Capricorn Records into the label that introduced The Allman Brothers Band to a wider audience and became synonymous with Southern rock. Earlier in his career, he worked closely with soul icon Otis Redding, helping manage the singer during his breakthrough years before Redding's tragic death in 1967.

His influence stretched well beyond those legendary acts. During his decades in the music business, Walden worked with artists including Sam & Dave, Percy Sledge, Clarence Carter, Arthur Conley, Al Green, Etta James, Boz Scaggs and The Outlaws. He also co-founded Redwal Music, whose catalog included classics such as "Respect," "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," "Soul Man" and "I've Been Loving You Too Long."

After leaving Capricorn in 1970, Walden founded Hustler's Inc. and set out to find the next great Southern rock band. In a 2002 interview with Swampland, he recalled auditioning 187 groups before discovering Lynyrd Skynyrd.

"I went on a talent search for that 'special' band and auditioned 187 bands in one year and I only kept one! The 13th band I auditioned was LYNYRD SKYNYRD!!! I changed my lucky number from 5 to 13!"

Walden took the Jacksonville band to Muscle Shoals to record demos before eventually helping secure its first recording contract.

Despite the obstacles, he never stopped believing in the group.

"I am going to make Lynyrd Skynyrd happen even if it kills me!" he recalled shouting after a particularly discouraging setback.

Walden managed the band through its formative years, helping lay the groundwork for enduring classics including "Free Bird," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Simple Man" and "Gimme Three Steps." He later parted ways with the group in 1974 but retained enormous pride in what they had accomplished together.

Reflecting on the artist who meant the most to him, Walden reserved his highest praise for Redding.

"I began with Otis Redding who remained my favorite and accomplished more than them all put together," Walden told Swampland. "He put the 'S' and the 'O' in SOUL MUSIC. It never got any better than OTIS!"

Two years before his death, Walden reflected on his remarkable career in a video message, saying he was "very happy to be a part" of Georgia's rich musical legacy. Speaking about Redding, he called the soul icon "the best friend I had in life" and "one of the nicest human beings that walked the Earth."

Walden was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2003 in recognition of his contributions to the music industry. His impact extended far beyond the artists whose names appeared on album covers, helping shape the sound of Southern rock and soul music for generations.

Britney Spears may have just revealed some major baby news. While the pop princess isn’t pregnant yet (key word, yet), the 44-year-old may have another kiddo on the way sometime soon. 

Ever the cryptic Instagrammer, Spears slipped a new post into her feed early Thursday morning, and fans think she may have made a pretty important announcement. Even though it wasn’t exactly “Oops, I really did it again,” the mysterious message is giving people pause.

The post starts with a photo of baby clothes. Yes, baby clothes. The carefully constructed image features a onesie with the words “Phoenix has arrived,” a crocheted diaper cover, a pink hat, and a unicorn backpack.

Now we’re wondering if the pastel pink gear in the pic is telling fans that after having two boys (sons Sean Preston and Jayden James with ex Kevin Federline), she’s ready for a girl. 

Along with the baby clothes image, Spears also posted a photo of herself and one of her sons in his younger years, a few other seemingly random snapshots, and the caption, “If you’re lucky I have someone unbelievably beautiful I want to introduce you to…hopefully this year and if not the most beautiful things will never be seen!”

Spears continued, “Come what may…oh so near but the feet I feel lived too much in fear so the soil of ground that silence suspends is where I’m found yet there begin! It’s the silence!” And…what?

While social media lit up with theories that this was Britney’s way of teasing a third child, some fans had other ideas. In a recent Reddit thread, one commenter wrote, “It’s probably a maltipoo puppy,” while others said, “It’s probably a new doll”, “I thought she meant she was going to be a grandma,” and “It’s for a grandkid or those weird realistic dolls she likes.”

Today anchor Craig Melvin is speaking out after he chased down an intruder who burst into the NBC studio and yelled a racial slur at him.

Melvin, 47, took to Instagram on Thursday evening to reflect on the incident that occurred at NBC's headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza earlier that morning. A man who was later identified by PEOPLE as Andrew Truelove made his way past security and approached Melvin, yelling a racial slur at him. Melvin quickly alerted security, and Truelove was arrested by the police, NBC News stated. In a photo-free post that was just text written on a black background, Melvin made it clear that he's doing well and will be back in his seat at the studio on Friday.

"Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I’m doing just fine. Thanks for reaching out. I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow," Melvin captioned the post, which also featured a statement from NBC News.

Al Roker Also Spoke Out

In the comments of Melvin's post, friends and fans were quick to offer their support to Melvin. That included Today weather anchor Al Roker, whom Truelove reportedly initially asked for when he burst into the studio, PEOPLE reported.

"Me, too!!!" Roker shared in the comments of Melvin's post.

What Did The Statement From NBC Say?

A prepared statement from NBC claimed there was no altercation between Truelove and Melvin.

"There was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio. An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured," the statement read. "TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff, and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios."

Get ready for the next generation of Mouseketeers. 

Disney+ is preparing to bring back the iconic children's television program, The Mickey Mouse Club. According to a Deadline article from July 16, the studio has ordered a pilot with plans for a reboot. 

The variety show first came out in 1955 and aired intermittently until 1996. It is responsible for launching celebrities such as BritneySpears, RyanGosling, JustinTimberlake, and Christina Aguilera into fame.

The reboot is ready for the next group of potential future stars. The pilot is set to star three Camp Rock 3 actors, HudsonStone, Casey Trotter, and BrooklynnPitts, as well as EriantheAkaata (Young Rock), Scarlett London Diviney (The Lion King), MichaelCash (BlackRabbit), Yonas Kibreab (Elio), Varonica Mitchell, Kauani, Scarlett Grace Petty, and Carter Barnes.

Disney stated that The Mickey Mouse Club will be a “showcase for today’s most talented young performers, where music, innovation, and self-expression take center stage,” per Deadlinereporting. 

Production on the pilot is expected to start July 2026 in Los Angeles. It will be produced by Fullwell Entertainment, the company behind The Kardashians. The executive producers include BenWinston (executive producer of The Late Late Show with James Corden and creative director of LA28), AshleyEdens (executive producer of Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney ), EmmaConway, and DavePiendak.

WaltDisney created The Mickey Mouse Club as a stage show in the 1920s. It made it to air in 1955 and ran on ABC until 1959. It was brought back in the 1970s as a syndicated series. The most well-known reboot was by the Disney Channel in 1989, which they called The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. It ran for eight seasons until 1996. Disney attempted a social media version of the program called Club Mickey Mouse from 2017 to 2018.

Anya Taylor-Joy has admitted she was relieved to hear James McAvoy had replaced an actor in Split, known for his intense methods.

The actress, who is currently promoting her new Apple TV+ show Lucky, reflected on M. Night Shyamalan’spsychological thriller to Hits Radio’s Olivia Marks. In an early role for the Emma star, she played a teenage girl kidnapped by a man struggling with dissociative identity disorder.

James McAvoy played the role of Kevin, for which he earned almost universal acclaim. But, Taylor-Joy revealed that he wasn't always the intended actor for the role.

“I was so grateful it was him, because originally it was supposed to be someone that’s very known for being a method actor,” she explained. “And if I had been in Philadelphia with a method actor whose intention was to eat me, I think that would have been a different experience.”

The Furiosa star also praised the Scottish Atonement actor for how mindful he was of the young women who were playing his victims, Taylor-Joy, Haley Lu Richardson and Jessica Sula.

“I was very grateful to have James, who I think also understood that he had three young women with him,” she told the popular celeb interviewer. “And so, every time after a take, he would just make it a little bit lighter and was very supportive and just a general great guy.”

Anya Taylor-Joy didn't name the method actor, but many presume she is referring to Joaquin Phoenix. The Oscar-winning actor pulled out of the psychological thriller project at the last minute, per Variety.

McAvoy spoke about replacing Phoenix in a 2024 episode of theHappy Sad Confusedpodcast, where he praised the Joker star as being “an amazing actor” but admitted he would have given "a very different performance to the one I did, but I think he’d give an incredible performance.”

“Sometimes coming in last minute is the best way,” he explained. “I think he ditched it two weeks before they started shooting. It was really last minute. I had a couple of weeks [to prep]. Two weeks. The script was well put together so a lot of it was clear what I wanted to do straight away," he recalled.

Joaquin Phoenix has become known for his intense on-set behavior which has involved shedding weight quickly, asking the cast and crew to call him by his character name and even wiring his mouth shut to create a speech impediment.

Rare Earth’s story is written with firsts and lasts. Not only was the band the first group Motown Records named an imprint after, but their first major original song also became their last Top 10 hit.

Formed in Detroit in 1960 under the name The Sunliners, the band—made up of Pete Rivera on drums and lead vocals, Gil Bridges on sax and flute, Rod Richards on guitar, John Persh on bass and trombone, Kenny James on keyboards, and later Ed Guzman on percussion—tweaked their sound, changed their name, and became a rock-and-soul band responsible for some of the era's greatest hits. 

Before “I Just Want to Celebrate,” the band saw commercial and critical success with covers of legendary songs including The Temptations’ “Get Ready” and “(I Know) I’m Losing You.” They’d put out three studio albums and one live album throughout the ’60s and early ’70s without really ever finding their audience. It wasn’t until One World that they struck gold. 

“Rare Earth became a popular touring act at that point, their jammy style often helping them steal the show as openers for much more established acts,” American Songwriter shared.

In 1969, as Motown, the legendary Black-owned soul label, was looking to expand beyond its soul roots and into rock radio, they signed Rare Earth, who were looking for their own signature song. After finding success with a string of covers, the band got their hands on “I Just Want to Celebrate,” an optimistic track written by songwriting duo Dino Fekaris and Nick Zesses specifically for the rockers. 

“Rare Earth, known for epically wild jams that transformed well-known hit songs,” American Songwriter wrote. “In 1971, the Detroit-based band enjoyed their biggest hit with a song written just for them. That song, ‘I Just Want to Celebrate,’ still stands tall thanks to its thrilling instrumental flourishes and unvarnished positivity.”

The track was a massive hit. Released in June of 1971, it spent the summer climbing the ranks on Billboard’s Hot 100, peaking at No. 7 that September. A groundbreaking genre-blending track, the hit was released as the lead single from their One World album. 

In the decades since, the song has enjoyed an extraordinary second life through licensing, appearing in films including Three Kings, A Knight’s Tale, and The Nice Guys, and television shows like Six Feet Under, The Simpsons, and Smoke, as well as commercials, and sporting events. 

More than five decades later, “I Just Want to Celebrate” remains one of rock’s most enduring celebrations of resilience and the simple joy of being alive.

Atlanta Rhythm Section developed a sexually charged soft rock track titled "Imaginary Lover" that was a hit among listeners, but it was due to a misconception about the singer.

The Southern rock band was diving into the yacht rock genre when they released the track and their greatest hit. "Imaginary Lover" was released as part of their Champagne Jam album and entered the charts at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also did well on the Adult Contemporary chart at No. 20.

Written by Perry Carlton "Buddy" Buie, Dean Daughtry, and Robert Nix, the band has always kept its lips sealed about what inspired the track. Fans can either take its lyrics literally or figuratively about an imaginary lover. The track gives off the message of "private pleasure" that guarantees satisfaction in the absence of a partner. Buie was once asked if "Imaginary Lover" was in fact about masturbation, to which he replied, "Yes!"

While the song's lyrics are something to talk about, the backstory to how it got popular among fans is arguably more interesting. "Imaginary Lover" received unusual publicity when a DJ jockie accidentally played the track at 45 rpm instead of its normal 33.

To everyone's surprise, they had no idea the track was by Atlanta Rhythm Section due to Ronnie Hammond's vocals sounding almost exactly like Stevie Nicks' from Fleetwood Mac. Many even called the track the "lost" Fleetwood Mac track, with listeners calling into the radio station requesting to play "Imaginary Lover."

The popularity surrounding the track even reached Nicks herself. According to Rolling Stone, she rushed out to buy the record and played it at the wrong speed to see if it was true. At the time, Fleetwood Mac was in between albums and creating new song demos for Tusk.

“I got chills,” says Nicks. “It sounds exactly like something I’d sing, the way I’d sing it. I even played it for Christine [McVie], mixed in with some other demos for the new album. She complimented me on it.”

According to reports, engineer Hernán Rojas would later learn that Atlanta Rhythm Section were the real singers. He wasn't amused by what Nicks had done and claimed that he "didn't find it as funny as we did.

Having formed in 1970, the band gained the most success with their Champagne Jam album and "Imaginary Lover." The album also led off with "Large Time", a tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd, and their No. 14 hit on the charts, "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight."

Fifty-one years ago, legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac released "Say You Love Me"—a track that resurfaced two decades after it dropped and remains staple of the genre.

"Say You Love Me" was originally released on July 11, 1975 as a track from Fleetwood Mac's beloved self titled record—which is often referred to as The White Album. Following the record's major success, listener demand for the track surged, prompting the band to issue it as a single in June 1976. From there, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100, spending 19 weeks on the chart. In September, it peaking at No. 11—becoming the highest-charting single from the album at the time.

Written entirely by keyboardist and vocalist Christine McVie, "Say You Love Me" explores the emotional complexity that comes with getting caught up in a casual relationship with a partner who strings you along. McVie highlights themes of romantic manipulation and casual love through vulnerable, pleading lyrics that deeply resonated with audiences.

"Say You Love Me" is recognizable for its upbeat, folk-rock sound, a twist from its contrasting lyrical message. Its earworm melody paired with McVie's powerful vocals made for an undeniably addicting song that caught the attention of any soft rock fan. Today, the track is just as popular, with a live album that hoisted it back into the public eye.

The Dance Revival

In 1987, guitarist and vocalist Lindsey Buckingham departed from the group, prompting the breakup of the iconic Rumours-era lineup. The separation followed a series of tumultuous falling-outs among the band due to relationship troubles.

Ten years later, the beloved lineup, consisting of Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, reunited for a live concert album titled The Dance. The record was a massive phenomenon, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 LP chart due to how highly anticipated it was.

The Dance went on to be certified 5× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), moving over 6 million copies worldwide and becoming the fifth best-selling live album in U.S. history. Its unparalleled mainstream attention reignited public fascination with multiple '70s hits, "Say You Love Me" being one of them.

The single was reimagined during the live performance, stripping away its electric guitar in favor of a driving acoustic banjo. The new acoustics transformed the track into a spectacular folk-rock jam that is still beloved by fans today.

Over five decades since its initial release, "Say You Love Me" remains one of Fleetwood Mac's most impactful songs. The track continues to endure among new generations of listeners. On Spotify alone, it has accumulated over 214 million streams, cementing its lasting status as a timeless rock staple.

While not everyone enjoys the genre, horror books, with their disturbing descriptions and metaphors for actual atrocities, tend to have a pretty big impact on readers' imaginations. Collider recently showcased a few popular horror novels published after 2006, with a ranking of "the 8 best horror books of the last 20 years." The list featured terrifying books like Joe Hill's NOS4A2 published in 2013, 2014's Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, and The Strain, co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, from 2009.

The publication put Junji Ito's complete manga series, Uzumaki (1998-1999), at the top of the list. According to Collider, the three-volume manga series offers readers a ghastly experience wherein Kurouzu-cho residents are subjected to mental deterioration and bodily transformations thanks to a curse.

Junji Ito Spoke About What Influenced His Career as an Author of Horror Manga in a 2025 Interview

In a 2025 interview promoting his collaboration with the clothing company BlackMilk, Ito explained that he was inspired to be an author and illustrator of horror manga after reading Kazuo Umezu and Shinichi Koga's books "when [he] was a child."

"After that, I continued to draw for fun using only paper and pencil, but when I was in high school, I met a friend who was drawing full-fledged manga using a pen and ink, and I imitated him and started drawing with a pen and ink. However, I could hardly finish it properly," said Ito.

He clarified that his manga series, which also includes Shiver (2015) and The Liminal Zone (2022), don't have a "specific source of inspiration."

"If I had to pick one, I would say that the human body inspires me the most. The human body, with its complex mind, is the motif that interests me the most," continued Ito during the 2025 interview.

He also pointed to a moment from Uzumaki as one of his favorite illustrations from all of his projects.

“I like the picture in Uzumaki where the face of a girl named Azami is invaded by a vortex, and the picture in The Human Chair (original story by Ranpo Edogawa) where the contents of a chair are revealed," said Ito.
