‘I’m a Pilates Instructor—These 5 At-Home Exercises Helped My Clients Lose Stubborn Weight'
Pilates serves as an effective workout for the mind and body. It’s a stellar low-impact training modality that sculpts lean muscle, boosts flexibility and mobility, strengthens the core and reduces stress and anxiety. (Let’s be honest: Whenever you hop on the reformer and begin the session with footwork, you instantly feel at ease!)
Pilates concentrates on the deep stabilizing muscles, which helps improve postural alignment and alleviate back pain. With Pilates as part of your regular routine, you will learn to move more efficiently, breathe intentionally and prioritize mindful movement.
Another great thing about Pilates is convenience. You don’t necessarily have to head to a studio or use a reformer—all you really need is a floor mat to get started, along with some optional tools like a magic circle and Pilates ball. This makes Pilates an affordable option for home workout enthusiasts.
Whether your goal is to build total-body strength, improve posture or simply burn calories and get into shape, Pilates serves as an effective workout to fit your needs. In fact, we spoke with Brittni Johnson, NCPT-certified Pilates instructor at BetterMe with more than 15 years of experience in performance, education and coaching, who shares her top at-home exercises that have helped her client lose stubborn weight.
“The real results show up after the [Pilates] session ends. Pilates builds muscle, which burns more calories at rest than fat does. By increasing your muscle mass, your body works harder than it used to, even when you aren't working out,” she tells Parade.
Below, Johnson breaks down everything to know about losing weight at home with Pilates.

What Makes Pilates an Effective Choice for Weight Loss? While performing traditional cardio torches calories during the workout itself, Pilates changes how your body operates the rest of the day. It also helps strengthen the smaller muscles that support the pelvis and spine, which, in turn, can help you lift heavier weights in an all-around more beneficial, safer manner, Johnson tells us. Training with weights is what helps alter your body composition, and Pilates is an excellent supplement to that.
“There's also the cortisol piece, which most people overlook,” Johnson adds. “Chronic stress is one of the main reasons the body holds onto fat, especially around the belly. Pilates brings the nervous system down, and when your body feels calm, it's far more willing to release those stores.”
Spot reduction is a myth, but Pilates helps build and tone your deep muscles. So, as body fat reduces, the toned appearance is already waiting for you, Johnson explains. When you shed weight through a calorie deficit, your body looks sculpted and defined rather than just “smaller.”

How Core Engagement Impacts Calorie Burn During PilatesBeing mindful of core engagement during a Pilates workout is essential for success.
“In Pilates, the core, what we call the powerhouse, is never really off. When it's properly engaged, even lifting one leg becomes a full-body effort. That demands a lot more energy than most people expect,” Johnson says. “Add a Pilates ring or resistance band, and your muscles are also working to stabilize against an outside force. That extra recruitment pushes the calorie burn up significantly across the whole session.”
5 At-Home Pilates Exercises for Weight Loss1. The Pilates HundredThe Hundred is an exercise Johnson kicks off almost every session with. “The arm pulses combined with deep breathing wake up your circulation fast,” she says.
- Start seated on a floor mat.
- Roll back, bringing your chin toward your chest and hovering your shoulder blades above the ground.
- Extend your legs to a 45-degree diagonal, bringing them together and pointing your toes.
- Reach both arms forward.
- Start to pulse your arms.

2. Side-kneeling obliques“For the waist, I go [for] the side-kneeling obliques. Pressing into the mat (or a Pilates ring) creates a lateral challenge that hits the side-body better than any crunch,” Johnson says.
- Begin in a side-kneeling position with one knee on the mat and the other leg extended out to the side with your foot flat.
- Position your bottom hand on the mat or on a Pilates ring that’s placed under your shoulder.
- Stack your hips and shoulders.
- Reach your top arm overhead, elongating the fingers.
- Press into the mat or ring with your bottom hand to activate your side body.
- Slightly lift your hips to feel the contraction through your obliques.
- Hold the position for a moment before releasing.
- Repeat on the other side.
“The roll-up looks gentle, but try slowing it down and you'll feel your deep abdominals as you roll through your spine one vertebra at a time. It demands real abdominal control throughout,” Johnson points out.
- Lie flat on your back with both legs extended and arms reaching overhead, palms facing up.
- Take a deep breath in.
- On the exhale, gradually roll up, lifting your arms, shoulders and head off the mat.
- Continue to roll up until you reach a seated position with your arms reaching toward your toes.
- Inhale at the top of the movement.
- Breathe out as you use control to return to the start position.
“Single-leg circles are deceptively hard. One leg is moving, but the real work is happening everywhere else. Your hips, core and stabilizers all have to hold firm, and that's what builds deep core stability—by learning how to stabilize your pelvis while the legs are moving,” Johnson explains.
- Lie flat on your back on a mat with your arms at your sides and both legs extended.
- Activate your core and press your lower back into the floor.
- Lift your left leg up toward the sky, keeping your right leg on the mat.
- Start to draw tiny circles in the air with your left leg with control, keeping your pelvis stable.
- Perform the prescribed number of circles in one direction, then in the opposite direction.
- Repeat on the other side.

5. Double-leg S=stretch“Double-leg stretch might be my personal favorite. You're reaching your arms and legs away from your center at the same time, which means your core has to fight to keep everything together. People always underestimate it at first,” Johnson says.
- Lie flat on your back on the mat and bring your knees in toward your chest.
- Lift your head, neck and shoulders off the floor.
- Place your hands on your shins to begin.
- Then, take a deep breath in as you reach your arms overhead and extend both legs out to form a 45-degree angle.
- Make sure your core remains engaged and your lower back stays pressed into the mat.
- Breathe out as you reverse the motion, bringing your knees back to your chest and your hands to your shins.
If you want to achieve noticeable results, being consistent is the name of the game. For weight loss, Johnson recommends doing Pilates workouts three to four times a week.
“Research suggests the most noticeable changes in body composition tend to show up after 12 weeks or more, so patience is part of the process,” she says.
Even a brief 20-minute session a day trumps a longer session done every now and then. Establishing a regular Pilates practice ensures your metabolism and mind-body connection remain sharp.
Keep in mind that while Pilates alone can help you lose weight, it’s more effective when paired with additional strength training, along with a nutritious diet that supports your progress and goals. So roll out your mat and get started with this healthy habit at home!

Qdoba Is Offering $5 in 'Guac Relief' Ahead of Tax Day—Here's How to Get It
Tax season has a way of making people pay closer attention to where their money is going, and Qdoba is leaning into that reality with a timely promotion aimed at one of fast-casual dining's most persistent frustrations: paying extra for guacamole.
The Mexican fast-casual chain recently announced its new Tax Day Guac Relief promotion, which gives rewards members a chance to earn a $5 credit toward a future meal simply by sharing their experiences with guacamole upcharges at other restaurants.

♬ Fiesta Mexicana - Musica MexicanaQdoba's promotion also highlights a key point of differentiation for the brand: its longstanding policy of including guacamole and queso at no extra charge on create-your-own entrées. While many competitors treat guacamole as a premium add-on, Qdoba has positioned its approach as part of a broader effort to simplify ordering and reduce surprise costs.
As part of the campaign, the company has also partnered with personal finance educator Tori Dunlap, founder of Her First $100K and host of the Financial Feminist podcast, to highlight how small everyday charges can add up over time.
Dunlap is encouraging consumers to take a hard look at routine expenses—like paying extra for guac—stating, "building better money habits often starts with questioning the small charges we're told are normal...[and] choosing brands that don't nickel‑and‑dime you for things that should already be included."
Turning Tax Season Into a Marketing MomentLimited-time promotions tied to tax season have become increasingly common across the restaurant industry, as brands seek to connect with consumers during a time when budgets are top of mind. By framing the promotion around a familiar frustration, Qdoba is tapping into a conversation many fast-casual customers already understand.
For diners who already frequent the chain, the offer may provide an extra incentive to visit. For others, it serves as a reminder that even small perks can make a difference when dining out costs keep rising.
For those interested in participating, the promotion runs through Tax Day, giving customers a short window to claim their own bit of "guac relief."

Katy Perry Shares Rare Photos of Her Daughter With Orlando Bloom
Katy Perry is always in the public eye. And while the pop performer has made recent news for her relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the 41-year-old tries to keep her daughter out of the spotlight.
Long before she was spotted snuggling with Trudeau, Perry was coupled up with Pirates of the Caribbeanstar Orlando Bloom. The pair, who announced their engagement in 2019, never officially married and eventually split sometime last summer. Even though they are no longer together, Perry and Bloom remain committed to coparenting their daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom (born August 2020).
Like plenty of other celebrity parents, Perry and Bloom make it a point to keep their kiddo out of the public eye. But that doesn’t mean you can’t catch a rare glimpse of the five-year-old every so often. Both parents occasionally share pics on social media, usually camouflaging the little girl’s face with an emoji or choosing a back-of-the-head angle.
Bloom recently shared an Instagram post captioned, “love language lately.” Along with a series of selfies, the actor included a beach-trip pic and a video of his daughter, Daisy. Of course, her face was covered by a heart in the photo, and the video only showed the back of her hair.
View this post on InstagramPerry also posted a few springtime snapshots of Daisy. Like Bloom, she buried these in the middle of a carousel featuring other photos. After scrolling through a selfie and a group shot (which features Trudeau), fans eventually came across a video of what they assume is Daisy. And this clip is one you absolutely can’t miss!
View this post on InstagramEven though you can only see the little girl’s feet, fans can definitely hear her singing. What is her song of choice? Of course, it’s one of her famous mam’s tunes. As she rides in her car seat, Daisy hilariously belts out the chorus of ‘Woman’s World’. Katy better watch out. It looks like a new star is on the rise. One commenter wrote, “It’s a Daisy’s world and we’re lucky to be living in it!”
The Grammy Award-winner (and we’re talking Katy, not Daisy…yet) also added a photo of her daughter walking towards a massive “Love” sculpture and Valentine’s Day-ish flower display. To keep her little one’s face private, Perry only shares a pic from the back.
If you’re wondering whether Perry might show public clips of her daughter (minus the face-covering emojis) anytime soon, it looks like the mama will keep her kiddo private for now. The superstar singer recently posted about children and social media use, applauding the book ‘The Amazing Generation’. In the post, Perry references several norms for parents regarding tech-time and kids. These include no smartphones until age 14 and no social media use before age 16. Given that Daisy is five, she has a while to wait.
Krispy Kreme Offering Limited-Time 'Mix Pack' to Mark Sitcom's Highly Anticipated Return After 20 Years
We're still a few days shy from the return of TV's rowdiest family with the Hulu revival of Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, but Krispy Kreme is getting in on the upcoming festivities with their new limited-time Mix Pack.
According to a new press release from the company, Krispy Kreme will begin offering their new Mix Pack from April 10 to April 12 to coincide with the release of Malcolm in the Middle's long-awaited sequel series.
For one weekend only, fans can arrive to any participating Krispy Kreme location and order the brand's Malcolm in the Middle Mix Pack, which includes 10 Original Glazed Donuts surrounded by 10 Original Glazed Donut Dots and 10 Sprinkle Donut Dots caught "in the middle."
In addition to the massive variety pack, the Mix Pack will come in a specialty wrapped dozen box, featuring a tie-in design inspired by the show.
As most fans might remember, Malcolm in the Middle served as one of the most popular sitcoms of the 2000s.
Running from 2000 to 2006, the series focused on the chaotic antics of the rambunctious Wilkerson family, a blue collar family that includes the iron-willed matriarch Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), the irresponsible father Hal (Bryan Cranston) and their five woefully misbehaved sons.
Though it ended in 2006, Malcolm in the Middle is formally set to return with its long-awaited sequel series on Hulu. With most of the original cast returning, the series will follow the now middle-aged Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) as he reconnects with his estranged family.
Along with Muniz, Kaczmarek and Cranston, the sequel series will see the return of original Malcolm in the Middle stars Christopher Masterson, Justin Berfield, Emy Coligado, David Anthony Higgins and Gary Anthony Williams, among others.
All four episodes of Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair premiere on April 10, 2026.

One ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Star Quietly Disappeared—Here’s What Happened
As the stars of Charlie's Angels celebrate the show's 50th anniversary, one former cast member has opened up about her decision to leave Hollywood years ago. Kate Jackson, who played Sabrina Duncan on Charlie's Angels, didn't hold back in a chat with People.
Jackson reflected on "those horrible tabloids" that took a difficult situation and made it worse. She explained that the fame and attention she and her fellow Charlie's Angels co-stars received as the show became intensely viral became too much.
"We lost our privacy, totally. We just absolutely totally lost every bit of privacy," Jackson told People. She added, "And then, to make it worse, those horrible tabloids."
Related: 'Charlie's Angels' Star Jaclyn Smith, 80, Announces Intimate New Project
Charlie's Angels aired for five seasons, from 1976 to 1981. Jackson stayed on the show for the first three seasons before deciding to leave due to scheduling conflicts and creative differences.
Jackson had extensive acting experience before joining Charlie's Angels, and she continued to act for years after departing the series. Before Charlie's Angels, Jackson starred on Dark Shadows and The Rookies, and in the 1980s she starred on Scarecrow and Mrs. King.
She continued to pick up roles here and there for another two decades, but she didn't tackle anything big again after Scarecros and Mrs. King. Jackson's last role was a guest stint for one episode of Criminal Minds in 2007.
Despite her strong feelings about losing her privacy due to the fame she garnered on Charlie's Angels, Jackson told People that reuniting with Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd for an April 6 event at PaleyFest felt "good."
Jackson explained, "[It's been] a long time. It feels good to be together." She admitted she was nervous about the event, in part because it's been so long since she's done that kind of thing.
Luckily, however, "We just fell right back into place. Yeah, being together. It feels really good."
Even though Jackson left Charlie's Angels after three seasons and left Hollywood behind nearly 20 years ago, she still loves the "sisterhood" she formed with her co-stars.
Jackson explained, "Time didn't break it. Time, we still embrace it in the distance. And we're always for each other. Whatever is going on."
She added that there's a "real, genuine care" and "real love" between the ladies that has never gone away.
1983 Heartbreaking Film Ranked Among 'Best Tearjerker Movies' When You Need a Good Cry
If you're in the mood to watch a sad movie, Terms of Endearment is the '80s classic that will likely have you reaching for the tissues.
The 1983 classic, which follows the tumultuous relationship between a mother and daughter, Aurora and Emma, over 30 years of their relationship, earned endless praise for its stars, which included Debra Winger, Shirley MacLaine, and Jack Nicholson. But the beloved film also manages to devastate viewers year after year, and that's why it landed on Cosmopolitan's list of "60 Best Tearjerker Movies Ranked From Sad to Emotionally Devastating." In fact, Terms of Endearment came in at number 2 in the ranking.
Check out the trailer for the iconic film below:
Where is Debra Winger These Days?Winger, who is also known for roles in films like An Officer and a Gentleman and Urban Cowboy, became a mainstay of the film industry back in the ’80s. While she took on occasional roles in more recent years, including a stunning performance as Anne Hathaway‘s mother in 2008’s Rachel Getting Married, the actress has frequently stated that she doesn’t consider herself part of the Hollywood scene. However, Winger shared a rare photo of herself on social media back in January for an event in Little Rock alongside poet Naomi Shihab Nye titled “A Life of Art and Activism.” That classic smile hasn’t changed one bit since the ’80s!
View this post on Instagram What was it like on the Terms of Endearment Set?In a recent interview, the film’s director, James L. Brooks, reflected on the tense set of the beloved film, which chronicled the tumultuous relationship between a mother and daughter throughout the decades.
Brooks told PEOPLE that the film’s set felt like “when mom and dad are fighting, and that kind of frozen feeling you get in the pit of your stomach that you can do very little about it… it was a little like that.”
MacLaine and Winger didn’t get along, but the film ultimately triumphed, earning critical acclaim and a place in the hearts of film fans forever.
“At the end, there was enormous grace on Debra’s part, because we went to the Oscars,” Brooks reflected. “Everybody came home with an Oscar except Debra.”
Both Nicholson and MacLaine earned Oscars for their roles.
“People were posing with their Oscars, and she (Debra) sat there posing with an imaginary one,” he recalled. “So she had great grace at the end of it, but for a while there it was as rocky as it gets.”
Olympic Equestrian Accused of Shooting His Student Documented in Netflix’s ‘Untold: The Shooting at Hawthorne Hill’
In comparison to other sports, the equestrian world is far more tame, that is, until a 2019 attempted murder case played out like a highly dramatized work of fiction.
Olympic equestrian Michael Barisone was accused (and ultimately acquitted) of shooting his student Lauren Kanarek, and the case is the subject of the latest entry in Netflix's Untold series.
In Untold: The Shooting at Hawthorne Hill, both Barisone and Kanarek tell their sides of what happened in the shocking incident.
For his part, Barisone denied shooting Kanarek, but claimed temporary insanity due to what he alleges was ongoing harassment from Kanarek online.
During the trial, the alternate member of the 2008 Olympic equestrian team said that he had “zero” recollection of actually shooting Kanarek, which she and her legal team refuted, claiming Barisone was “acting” while giving his testimony.
In the trailer for the upcoming documentary, which drops on Netflix on April 21, Kanarek alleges that Barisone was abusing his power as her teacher.
"It was only about harassment, bullying, and an abuse of power," Kanarek says in the clip. "Your whole life revolves around this one thing. If he says, 'I will ruin your career with one phone call,' that's not something you take lightly."
However, the trailer also shows evidence of Kanarek’s mental instability via a social media post before the shooting took place, where she wrote "everyone should be worried" and that she's "not responsible for anything my other personalities do when they're threatened."
In April 2022, Barisone was found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity. Before being acquitted, he spent two years in prison.
This 1995 Box Office Disappointment From Disney Became a Cult Classic
On April 7, 1995, Walt Disney Television Animation released A Goofy Movie, based on the television series Goof Troop. The film, which was directed by Kevin Lima, followed Goofy and his teenage son, Max, as they went on a fishing trip across the country. The story was inspired by a car trip that former Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg had been planning to take with his daughter.
When A Goofy Movie was first released in theaters, it received mixed reviews from critics. The film was widely considered a box office failure, since it only made approximately $35 million when it cost around $18 million to make. “It wasn’t even a B movie. It was a C movie,” executive producer Don Hahn said in a 2020 interview.
However, after being released on home video, the heartwarming film eventually grew into a beloved cult classic. There was even a 2024 Disney+ documentary released about the making of the film, called Not Just a Goof, to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary. The doc featured interviews with different workers involved with the movie, including the director, story artist, and voice of Goofy, Bill Farmer.
“When I first saw a rough cut of the movie, I knew it had a great deal of heart, more so than most animated movies,” Farmer said when speaking about the film. “But I had no idea that it would affect so many fathers and sons, especially throughout the years.”
Farmer went on to say, "Over the last 30 years, it has become the number one thing that I talk about with fans at events and Comic-Cons and things—they always ask about A Goofy Movie and say, 'Thank you for my childhood. I couldn't talk to my dad until that movie came out. It became our movie.' There are so many great stories. I'm just totally thrilled with the way that it has grown in popularity."
Many fans enjoyed A Goofy Movie because of the heartwarming father-son bond portrayed throughout the film. The soundtrack, which contained 13 catchy tunes, was also popular. Many of those songs were performed by the character Powerline, whose singing voice was provided by R&B singer Tevin Campbell. Campbell was chosen because he worked closely with Prince prior to the film, and Powerline’s image was heavily inspired by the pop icon.
Although a sequel to A Goofy Movie was never released in theaters, a direct-to-video follow-up was released in 2000 called An Extremely Goofy Movie. This film also served as a finale to the Goof Troop TV series. It followed Max as he tried to head off on his own to college, only for his father to join him after losing his job and deciding to earn his degree.
Retirees Love Settling in This Low-Cost-Of-Living State— But It’s Actually the Most ‘Financially Distressed’ in the U.S.
When it comes time to retire, many Americans look for the perfect mix of circumstances to guide their move. That often means finding a new home with mild winters, a lower cost of living, and plenty of access to top-notch healthcare. However, a new WalletHub report has tracked which states have the most financially distressed residents, and, surprisingly, a retirement hot spot is in first place.
If you're planning to head South for your golden years, you'll want to take a look at this report to see if your dream retirement destination has been named a financial nightmare for people who are struggling to stay afloat.
WalletHub Study Names Texas as Having the Most 'Financially Distressed' PopulationsAccording to WalletHub, folks living in Texas experienced the most financial stress among residents of all other states in 2025. They included things like credit scores (the state has the 13th lowest in the nation), changes to bankruptcy filings from the previous year (Texas ranked in 6th place here), number of people searching for information on "debts" and "loans" (the Lone Star State fell into 13th and 5th place respectively), to earn itself the top spot.
The report notes that this news is shocking, especially given that the state is the eighth-largest economy in the world. However, four cities in particular were named the most distressed: Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin. According to the San Antonio Express-News, this isn't a shock, since this is the second year in a row the state has won the title.
Related: This State Was Just Named the Worst Place To Retire in the U.S.
However, it seems like a higher-than-average poverty rate among older residents could be driving some of the financial strain. The National Council on Aging says that poverty rates among older adults reached 15 percent, with some 9.2 million seniors across the country falling into this group. As our poorest Americans seek financial support by moving to areas with lower cost of living in retirement, it may come as no surprise that some of these regions may see more people struggling as a result.
These Are the Other 'Financially Distressed' StatesWhile everything may be bigger in Texas, residents here aren't the only ones struggling with debt and borrowing. According to the report, these are the top 10 states where people are facing financial challenges...and you may notice a theme:
- Texas
- Florida
- Louisana
- Nevada
- South Carolina
- Oklahoma
- North Carolina
- Mississippi
- Kentucky
- Alabama
Related: Popular State May Lower the Retirement Age to 55—but There’s a Catch
Several of these states are popular retirement destinations thanks to their mild winters and lower cost of living. In fact, Florida's second-place spot on the list is a surprising one, especially when you consider that the state's favorable tax breaks are one of the reasons that people flock to the Sunshine State as soon as they are living on a fixed income. However, it looks like there are bigger factors at play here than just a lower cost of living, since many of these states also report paying lower wages.
According to ZipRecruiter, the average salary in Florida is $50,685, which the employment website ranked as low for the country. Of course, retirees in Florida may not be looking for work, but if they do need to supplement their income, they may not be able to earn as much as they could in other states, which is food for thought for any seniors considering relocating for retirement.
Mountain Dew Finally Launches ‘Creamy’ New Flavor Fans Have Been Waiting For
A highly anticipated new Mountain Dew flavor is officially here!
After months of fans waiting for an update, the PepsiCo brand finally revealed that its new Dirty Mountain Dew Soda would be heading to shelves nationwide—but not before teasing fans with a similar yet different soft drink line offered exclusively at Taco Bell.
"Mountain Dew has always led where flavor goes next, and dirty soda is exactly that moment," said Michael Smith, vice president of marketing for Mountain Dew, PepsiCo Beverages U.S., explained in a April 7 press release. "Dirty Mountain Dew takes our iconic citrus flavor and makes it bold and refreshing in a whole new way – a bold, creamy ready-to-drink experience that's exactly what Dew fans have been waiting for."
It looks like everyone's patience will pay off, literally, as the company is not only hinting that this newcomer could be the next Code Red or Baja Blast, but it's also allowing some consumers to try the new soda flavor for free for a limited time later this month.
Dirty Mountain Dew Cream Soda Dew Officially Releases TodayWhile the line may have "cream soda" plastered across the front of the can, it's a little more complicated than that. It's the soft drink brand's take on a viral trend, just without the wait or mess of stirring up syrups, sodas and creamers.
Dirty Mountain Dew "reimagines the dirty soda space through a distinctively Mountain Dew lens," according to an official description. It blends the brand's iconic citrus foundation with a satisfyingly smooth, creamy finish that's "bright, bold, and refreshing straight from the can." It will be available as a regular, full-sugar soda and in a Zero Sugar variety.

This is Your Lucky Number, According to Your Birth Year
Being the original language of the universe, numbers give order to the beautiful chaos of life. From an early age, you may have been exposed to either cultural or family-related ideas about some digits being luckier than others. Like, for example, 13 being unlucky or 11 being the most magical number of all. But if we consider that our soul chose a specific time to incarnate, it would mean we each have a different relationship with certain numbers. Therefore, certain digits may be luckier than others, according to our unique birth data.
Read on to discover your lucky number, based on your birth year.
MUST READ: Your Power Color, Based on the Year You Were Born
How to Find Your Lucky Birth Year NumberWhile your birth date and birth month are important, your birth year is the container that holds them together. When reducing these four digits twice, you’ll arrive at one single digit. For example, if you were born in 1999, adding 1+9+9+9 = 28, and 2+8 = 10, which reduces to 1. This is your lucky number, which in astrology, relates to the leadership powers of the Sun. So when you’re either playing the lottery or choosing a plane ride to your vacation, all numbers—in this case 28, 73, 1027, 2026, and so on—that reduce to 1 will be your luckiest.

1973 No. 1 One-Hit Wonder Became a Timeless Breakup Anthem
In 1973, Brother Louie by Stories climbed to No. 1 and then, seemingly, disappeared along with the band behind it. But the song itself didn’t fade. Decades later, its raw story of forbidden love and emotional fallout has cemented it as an unexpected breakup anthem —one that still resonates far beyond its one-hit wonder status.
Originally written and released by the British soul band Hot Chocolate, the song follows an interracial love affair between a white man and a black woman, and the subsequent rejection of both by their parents because of it. The original "Brother Louie" peaked at No. 7 on the UK Singles Chart and was produced by Mickie Most. It was written by the band's members Errol Brown and Tony Wilson.
Six months later, in June, American band Stories released their cover of the song. Their version reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on August 25, 1973, and remained the top song for two weeks. It was the only No. 1 hit for the group. According to Stereogum, Ian Lloyd, the vocalist of Stories, heard "Brother Louie" while he was in a meeting with his A&R team. He knew it would be a hit, thinking he had only heard the demo version of the song. Though Stories already released their second studio album, About Us, in March 1973, the label quickly released a deluxe version with "Brother Louie" added at the end.

Based in New York City, Stories consisted of Lloyd, Michael Brown, Steve Love and Bryan Madey. Though they originally formed as a Beatles cover band, the group signed with the record label Kama Sutra, released a self-titled album and the single "I'm Coming Home" in 1972. Despite "Brother Louie" being a No. 1 hit and having multiple singles reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the group split up two years after their formation in 1974, only releasing three albums: Stories, About Us and Traveling Underground.
When it comes to their band name, Stories, Lloyd told Classic Bandsthat he and Brown came up with the name. "He's a great writer and we really locked in as a writing team," the 78-year-old singer said.

After Stories disbanded, Lloyd pursued a solo career, releasing five studio albums and working as a backup singer for many other musicians and bands including Foreigner, Billy Joel, Yes and Peter Frampton. Now, he is involved in his son's band Social Hero, where he serves as their mentor and producer.
"Brother Louie" and the rest of Stories' discography are available on all streaming platforms.

A 'Super El Niño' Could Be Brewing Sooner Than You Think— Here's How It Could Disrupt Your Travel Plans
A powerful climate pattern known as a “Super El Niño” may be developing as early as late 2026, and if it does, it could reshape travel plans worldwide. From flight delays to extreme weather at popular destinations, travelers should start paying attention now.
What Is El Niño and What Makes It “Super”?El Niño is part of a larger climate cycle called the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, which involves shifts in ocean temperatures and atmospheric conditions in the Pacific Ocean. During an El Niño, unusually warm water builds up in the eastern Pacific. That heat disrupts global weather patterns, changing where storms form, how much rain falls, and even how hot different regions become.
A “Super El Niño” is simply a much stronger version of this pattern. These events are rare but powerful, capable of pushing global temperatures higher and triggering extreme weather worldwide.
Early forecasts suggest one could develop in 2026–2027, with the potential to rival some of the strongest events on record.
Related: Travelers Are Being Warned That Severe April Weather May Cause Massive Flight Disruptions
Where It Will Likely Hit the HardestA Super El Niño doesn’t affect just one place; it reshapes weather patterns across the globe. Here’s where travelers may feel it most:
United States- Southern U.S.: Wetter-than-normal conditions, especially in winter
- West Coast: Increased storm activity and potential flooding
- Northern states: Warmer-than-average temperatures
PotentialTravel Impact: Flight delays, storm disruptions, and unpredictable weather, especially for winter travel.
Australia & Southeast Asia- Higher risk of extreme heat, drought, and wildfires
- Reduced rainfall in regions that depend on seasonal monsoons
PotentialTravel Impact: Poor air quality, wildfire risks, and limited outdoor activities.
South America- Countries along the Pacific coast may experience heavy rainfall and flooding
PotentialTravel Impact: Infrastructure issues, road closures, and increased travel delays.
Tropical Regions- More storms in the Pacific, but fewer hurricanes in the Atlantic
PotentialTravel Impact: Shifting hurricane seasons and unexpected storm patterns.

How It Could Disrupt Travel PlansThis isn’t just about “bad weather.” A Super El Niño can create ripple effects across the entire travel experience:
- Flight disruptions: Storms and turbulence can lead to delays and cancellations
- Higher travel costs: Weather-related disruptions can drive up prices
- Destination closures: Flooding, fires, or extreme heat may shut down attractions
- Shortened peak seasons: Some destinations may become less enjoyable or even unsafe during certain months
It can also make travel planning more unpredictable. Weather patterns you normally rely on (like dry seasons or mild winters) may not behave as expected.
What Travelers Should Do NowIf you’re planning trips for late 2026 or 2027, you don’t need to cancel, but you should be strategic.
- Stay flexible: Book flights and accommodations with flexible cancellation policies. Weather-related disruptions are more likely during strong El Niño years.
- Rethink timing: Consider traveling in shoulder seasons rather than peak months, when extreme weather is more likely.
- Choose destinations carefully: Avoid regions expected to experience severe drought, flooding, or storms. Look for destinations less affected by El Niño.
- Invest in travel insurance: Make sure your policy covers weather-related cancellations and delays; it could save you significant money.
- Monitor forecasts: As forecasts improve closer to 2026, keep an eye on regional weather updates and travel advisories.
While a potential Super El Niño may bring challenges, it also offers an opportunity to travel smarter. By staying informed and flexible, you can avoid major disruptions and still have an incredible trip.
Because the weather can be unpredictable, the best travel strategy is simple: plan ahead but stay ready to adapt.
Legendary Director Behind One of the Greatest Films Ever Turns 87 Today
A remarkable share of Hollywood’s most enduring classics can be traced back to visionary directors. As legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola celebrates his 87th birthday, it’s the perfect moment to applaud the creator behind some of the most influential films ever made.
Born on April 7, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, Coppola began his career in the '60s, directing the 1963 film Dementia 13. He directed the films You're a Big Boy Now and Finian's Rainbow, before co-writing the 1970 biographical war epic Patton that earned him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay alongside screenwriter Edmund H. North.
Coppola's career turning point and his most coveted directorial role was none other than the crime drama classic The Godfather in 1972. There were some development hiccups, as Mario Puzo's novel, which the film is based on, was owned by Paramount. Coppola was also not the production company's first choice as director. Believe it or not, Coppola rejected the movie and thought Puzo's novel was "sleazy" and "cheap," but changed his mind after advice from family and friends and a debt owed to Warner Bros.
The Godfather became a cinematic masterpiece starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall, Sterling Hayden, John Marley, Richard Conte, and Diane Keaton. The film revolutionized the gangster genre and earned Coppola an Oscar for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, withThe Godfather 2 earning him Best Director. A third installment was released in 1990.
The film was preserved by the Library of Congress and ranked the second-greatest film ever made after Citizen Kane. On the film's 54th anniversary, he posted on Instagram saying, "While making it, I never could imagine that it would become the #1 film in many polls over half a century later. I believed in this film when many didn’t and my ability to create a dialogue about what could work landed in success."

Coppola's achievements in film are numerous, having released the thriller The Conversation, which received the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He also directed the Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Rainmaker, and produced many others.
The director's influence in Hollywood is undeniable, to say the least, with his family having followed in his footsteps. His sister and actor Talia Shirestarred in his films, but also in the boxing classic Rocky.Sofia Coppola, his daughter, made her debut in the gangster films and became a director with hits like The Virgin Suicides, and won an Oscar for the comedy-drama Lost in Translation. His nephew, Nicolas Cage, also rose to fame in Hollywood.
Lana Condor Discusses 'X-Men' Reboot: 'I Have Been On This Crusade' (Exclusive)
Marvel is reportedly rebooting X-Men following the MCU's 2027 movie Avengers: Secret Wars, and actress Lana Condorhas weighed in on whether she would be interested in reprising her role as Jubilee.
Before she joined Netflix's massively popular To All the Boys I've Loved Before franchise, Condor had her breakout role as Jubilee in X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016. Since then, however, the character hasn't had another big screen appearance—although she is in the 2024 animated series X-Men '97, voiced by Holly Chou.
Marvel is making several moves that make a return possible for Condor. First, the MCU's 2022 movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opened up countless opportunities with its exploration of the multiverse, which allows for stories outside the MCU's Sacred Timeline to now be canon (if it's explained away by being another universe).
More interesting, though, are the increasing rumors that following Secret Wars, the MCU will be experiencing a full reboot. At present, these are rumors only, and Condor hasn't heard any buzz about it or about the new X-Men movie. However, she expressed clear interest in reprising her role as Jubilee if this became a possibility.
"I have been on this crusade to try and have them bring me back since truly the moment X-Men: Apocalypse first came out," Condor said.
She went on, "There was so much of Jubilee because she was my first character ever, ever, ever, and I was such a baby...I didn't know. I thought you had to pay for crafting. I had never stepped foot on set. So, I didn't know that world, and I was just so happy to be there. Honestly, any screen time that I got, I was like, 'I can't believe this is happening.'"
"There was so much that I wanted to do with Jubilee, and there's so many—based off of the comics—just so many places to go with her, so hopefully. That would be amazing. I would love that," Condor said.
This 1989 'Married With Children' Episode Was Banned From Airing on TV
Not all episode storylines make it on the air, and it's largely due to their controversial or risky material. It was certainly true for an episode of Married... with Children that never saw the light of day in the late '80s and was only released in the early 2000s.
The popular Katey Sagal and Ed O'Neill-led sitcom ran for a total of 11 seasons from 1987 until 1997, but not many might know about "the lost episode." Early in its run, during its third season, Married... with Children faced a few issues that led the episode "I'll See You in Court" to be banned by Fox and unable to air as its 45th episode.
The sitcom episode was written by Jeanne Baruch and Jeanne Romano, who were new to the sitcom writing team, and directed by Gerry Cohen. It focused on Peggy Bundy (Sagal) wanting to rekindle her sex life with her husband, Al (O'Neill), after getting the spark of inspiration from a talk show. She decides they need to do the deed in a new location and picks a motel at the suggestion of her friend.
On arrival, they find a videotape on the bed and realize it's a sex tape of their two friends. While shocked, they still do the deed and reveal the news to their friends the next day. The friends are stunned, but also make Peggy and Al realize they, too, were likely filmed while having sex. In a breach of privacy and anger, they decide to take the motel to court. Peggy and Al receive nothing due to a jury's decision, while their friends receive $10k. The episode ends with Al wanting to prove his sexual bravado and has sex with Peggy for hours on the judge's bench, unknown to them that they were being recorded.

The Married... with Children episode was intended to air in February 1989, but was deemed by Fox's censors as being too explicit for TV. It was during a time when the topic wasn't openly and vocally discussed on TV. Along with multiple initial changes to the script, Fox was also involved in a boycott led by activist Terry Rakolta. He was protesting over the content of "Her Cups Runneth Over," which aired earlier in the year. For the network, it was too risky to air the episode at the time and face further backlash.
As a result, "I'll See You in Court" was banned from ever being released on the air. It was not until June 18, 2002, that Fox's sister cable channel, FX, released the episode. The channel still edited out four lines and wasn't broadcast in its entirety. While the rest of the world had seen the episode, it was only fully made available when it was released on DVD.
