Why Princess Diana Sent William and Harry to Boarding School at 8, Despite Being 'In Tears'

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 9:57pm

Princess Diana had to adhere to many royal traditions while raising her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, and she specifically struggled with sending her kids to boarding school so young.

King Charles III was the first heir apparent to attend boarding school instead of being taught by private tutors at the palace. He was sent to Cheam School in Newbury at age 8 and later attended Gordonstoun in Scotland at 13, where his father, Prince Philip, was a distinguished alum. Although multiple outlets reported Charles didn’t enjoy his time at boarding school, even getting bullied in his younger years, he ended his schooling on a positive note.

In 1975, he praised the school’s positive impact on his life by saying, “I am lucky in that I believe it taught me a great deal about myself and my own abilities and disabilities.”

When it came to his own sons, Charles also wanted to send them to boarding school at age 8, in line with his “new” royal tradition.

Diana also attended boarding school but had a much different experience. At age 9, she attended the all-girls Riddlesworth Hall School near Thetford. In 1973, at age 12, she began attending West Heath Girls' School in Kent. Although Diana excelled in sports and community service, she struggled academically and left the school at 16.

The Princess of Wales’ brother, Charles Spencer, said she had a hard time separating from her family during her early years away at school. He claimed Diana told her father, Edward John Spencer, “If you loved me, you wouldn’t leave me here.”

Given her own complicated history with school, Diana was conflicted about sending William and Harry to boarding school so young. While it was agreed that they would start at age 8, she pushed back on them attending Gordonstoun and “insisted” they be closer to home. William and Harry attended Ludgrove School in Berkshire before moving on to Eton College in Windsor at 13, where Diana’s father and brother attended.

Diana was reportedly “in tears” when she dropped William off for his first day at Ludgrove School. However, despite her kids being away, she kept a very “hands-on” approach with them and would reportedly send them the “rudest cards you could imagine" to make them laugh. Eventually, Diana came around to their education and thought boarding school offered them a more “normal” life, thanks to the privacy and socializing with their peers.

William generally loved his time at Eton, with royal experts claiming it was a “safe harbour” for him in the years following Diana’s death in 1997. He excelled in academics and was on the water polo and soccer teams. Harry, on the other hand, said in his 2023 memoir, Spare, that he “didn’t enjoy” his years at Eton and “had a lot of anger” as he struggled with isolation and loneliness.

5 Years Ago Today, Hollywood Icon Became the Oldest Best Actor Winner in Oscars History

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 9:05pm

Anthony Hopkins celebrated a major career milestone five years ago today after his record-breaking win at the Oscars.

However, amid the recognition and applause from the public and critics, there was a surprising twist that no one saw coming.

On April 25, 2021, Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles lit up with A-listers, celebrities and industry figures to celebrate the 93rd Academy Awards.

Despite the global pandemic, the event broke from tradition, opting for a more intimate, scaled-down and socially distanced setting.

While some guests arrived dressed to the nines, others, including nominees, chose to skip the Oscars due to personal reasons, among them was Hopkins, who was nominated for Best Actor for his performance in The Father.

The Welsh actor was up against equally talented stars such as Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), the late Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Gary Oldman (Mank) and Steven Yeun (Minari).

Presented by Joaquin Phoenix, Hopkins took home the coveted award, making him the oldest Best Actor winner at 83.

He surpassed the previous record set by Henry Fonda, who won the same title at 76 during the 1982 Academy Awards.

However, at the time, Hopkins was not present to accept the award, so the Joker star accepted it on his behalf.

A day after the actor’s historic win, his representative revealed a surprising reason he was MIA at the ceremony.

“Tony was in Wales, where he grew up, and he was asleep at 4 in the morning when I woke him up to tell him the news," the actor’s long-time agent, Jeremy Barber, told PEOPLE, adding, "He was so happy and so grateful."

At the time, the two-time Oscar winner was in his hometown in Wales, where he was spending the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"After a year in quarantine, and being double-vaccinated, he was finally able to return to Wales, and at age 83 it was a great relief after such a difficult year," Barber further explained, adding that he considers the film to be meaningful to him, “But he loved the role in The Father – it's his proudest performance – and to be the oldest living actor to win in the category means so much to him."

Hopkins earned his first-ever Oscar after winning Best Actor at the 64th Academy Awards. It was for his exceptional performance as the cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the movie The Silence of the Lambs.

Best-Selling Author’s No. 1 Hit Novel Ranked Among ‘Greatest Books of All Time’ Was Often Banned

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 9:04pm

There is no novel that defines the Lost Generation quite like The Sun Also Rises.

The bestselling work by Ernest Hemingway has been ranked among the greatest books of all time, by The Greatest Books, a recognition that reflects both its literary influence and lasting cultural impact. Yet despite its acclaim, the novel was also frequently banned over the years due to its frank depictions of sexuality, drinking and disillusionment, elements that were considered controversial at the time.

Published in 1926, the novel follows a group of American and British expatriates traveling from Paris to Spain, capturing their search for meaning in the aftermath of World War I. At the center is Jake Barnes, a war veteran grappling with both physical and emotional wounds, and his complicated relationship with Lady Brett Ashley.

As a young man, Hemingway spent quite a bit of time in Spain, which inspired the novel.

"The country that a novelist writes about is the country he knows; and the country that he knows is in his heart," Hemingway told The New York Times in 1950.

The book is widely associated with the Lost Generation, a term used to describe the group of writers and artists who came of age during World War I and were left disillusioned by its aftermath. In The Sun Also Rises, that sense of aimlessness and fractured identity is central to the story, as the characters drift through life searching for purpose in a world that no longer feels stable or meaningful.

Hemingway's stripped-down writing style and focus on dialogue helped redefine modern fiction, influencing generations of writers to come. His process was as simple as it was essential, and it started even before sunrise.

"When I am working on a book or a story I write every morning as soon after first light as possible," Hemingway told The Paris Review. "There is no one to disturb you and it is cool or cold and you come to your work and warm as you write. You read what you have written and, as you always stop when you know what is going to happen next, you go on from there. You write until you come to a place where you still have your juice and know what will happen next and you stop and try to live through until the next day when you hit it again."

The novel was later adapted into the film of the same name, starring Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner and Errol Flynn. The adaptation brought the story's themes of love, loss and postwar disillusionment to a wider audience, translating Hemingway's introspective narrative to the big screen.

Nearly a century after its release, The Sun Also Rises remains both celebrated and debated.

Its place among the greatest books of all time, and its history of being challenged, speaks to its enduring power as a novel that continues to confront readers with uncomfortable truths about identity, purpose and the lasting impact of war.

How Paramount+’s Upcoming Animated Movie Turned Into a Crime Scene

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 8:50pm

Paramount+’s upcoming film The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender was leaked on X earlier this month. Now, the man behind the account has been arrested and is facing up to seven years in prison.

The user said that a friend from his hacker days sent him a full copy of the movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the user didn’t think it was a big deal to post it.

“I saw it’s just a Paramount+ thing, so I decided I’d troll a little bit,” the user said.

Within hours, the videos had been circulated and viewed thousands of times online. Paramount quickly conducted an investigation into the incident. On April 24, Singapore's The Straits Times said that the leaker had been arrested.

“A 26-year-old man who allegedly leaked the unreleased film The Legend Of Aang: The Last Airbender, the first animated movie in the Avatar franchise, has been arrested for accessing a media server without authorisation,” The Straits Times posted.

The man is currently being investigated for unauthorized access to the computer material, which could carry a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine of up to $50,000, or both, according to The Straits Times.

Australia's Flying Bark Productions, which animated the film, said in a statement, per Variety, “It was heartbreaking to see footage from ‘The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender’ leak online. This leak did not originate from Flying Bark. Our studio proudly partnered on the production until the very end and we acknowledge the filmmakers, cast, artists and animators who worked tirelessly to produce this incredibly crafted film."

“We worked on the aang movie for years with the expectation that’d we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters.. just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on twitter like candy,” Julia Schoel, one of the animators on The Legend of Aang, said on X.

Due to the leak, The Legend of Aang will not be getting a theatrical release. Instead, it will premiere exclusively on Paramount+ on October 9. Schoel called this “an awful decision.”

“I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support paramount+,” Schoel said. “But pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in.”

The Legend of Aang is based on Nickelodeon's series titled Avatar: The Last Airbender

Jeremy Jordan Takes Center Stage on Broadway as Legendary ‘60s Singer

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 8:42pm

Jeremy Jordan has officially returned to Broadway.

Jordan reprised his role in The Great Gatsby from November 2025 to early March 2026, and on April 21, he made his debut in Just In Time.

Just In Time is a biopic play based on the life of Bobby Darin. Known for his songs “Mack the Knife” and “Beyond the Sea,” Darin comes to life in the nightclub atmosphere of New York City’s Circle in the Square theater.

Originally starring Jonathan Groff, the role of Darin was passed on to Glee alum Matthew Morrison, who played Darin for a limited three-week engagement. Now, Jordan has taken over for an open-ended run.

View this post on Instagram

“What a thrill it was to finally share my version of this show with an audience for the first time," Jeremy said to People. "And what a gift this role and this company have been, challenging in all the good ways and just chock full of love and delight."

Just in Time begins with Jordan rising from beneath the stage, and he told People, “they may as well have shot me out of a cannon.”

“It honestly feels like nothing I've ever done before, and I can't wait to continue to take this ride each and every night," Jordan said.

Directed by Alex Timbers, the show tells the story of not only Darin’s songs, but also the man behind them. People called Darin “the tragic teen idol” and “a man in a hurry.”

As a child, Darin overheard a doctor say he would live a short life. This fueled him to live his life to the fullest, and by the age of 22, he became famous with his hit song “Splish Splash.”

“The way we're kind of weaponizing his story in our show is: He accomplished a lot in a short period of time because he had this ticking clock,” Groff told People. “What we're hoping to give the audience is this message: Life is short. Live it to the fullest while you can.”

Alongside Jordan, Just in Time stars Isa Briones (known for her role as Dr. Trinity Santos in The Pitt) as Connie Francis and Carrie St. Louis as Sandra Dee. Get tickets for the show here.

Kate Middleton Taps Her Wedding Dress Designer for Anzac Day 2026 Outfit

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 8:25pm

Kate Middleton took a center role during Anzac Day in the U.K., and she tapped her wedding dress designer to create a memorable look.

The Princess of Wales, 44, stepped out on April 25 in an ankle-length navy coat dress designed by Sarah Burton, creative director of Givenchy. The elegant coat featured structured shoulders and crisp, white lapels.

She paired the ensemble with a teardrop-shaped navy hat featuring a statement bow on the back by Jane Taylor Millinery in London, Gianvito Rossi navy suede pumps, and a navy handbag by London-based designer DeMellier, a favorite of Princess Kate. The royal's jewelry turned heads during the event. She wore Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond drop earrings, a sentimental piece that Kate has worn multiple times. The iconic earrings paired perfectly with her tanzanite pendant necklace by G. Collins & Sons, thought to be a gift from her husband, Prince William.

Kate and Burton, 52, have been long-time collaborators, with the British designer famously designing her 2011 wedding dress. At the time, Burton was the creative director for Alexander McQueen, and in 2023, she moved into the same role with Givenchy. Burton is known for her exceptional craftsmanship, blending modern femininity with traditional elegance, and her discreet nature. The designer previously said she didn’t tell her own mother she was designing Kate’s wedding dress, and has been close to the royal fold ever since.

Kate and Princess Anne represented Buckingham Palace during the day of remembrance in London, marking an important solo outing after Kate and Prince William, 43, took several weeks off with their kids during Spring Break. Kate laid a wreath at The Cenotaph on Whitehall on behalf of King Charles III, which featured a handwritten message from her and Prince William. She then joined a congregation at Westminster Abbey for the annual Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving.

Anzac Day honors all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars. April 25 specifically marks the anniversary of Australian and New Zealand soldiers landing in Gallipoli, Turkey, in 1915.

2026 marks the third time Kate has attended Anzac Day in London, and she followed her usual wardrobe formula. In 2019, the Princess wore a structured teal-blue coat dress by Catherine Walker & Co. and a matching teal fascinator adorned with pheasant feathers by Rosie Olivia. Her date for the event was Prince Harry, as William was in New Zealand following the Christchurch mosque attacks and Meghan Marklewas on maternity leave after giving birth to her and Harry’s son, Prince Archie.

Kate attended Anzac Day in 2022 alongside Prince William in another fabulous coat and hat combo. She was a vision in an Alexander McQueen ivory coat dress and black pumps. The dress is one of her favorites, as she previously wore it during Princess Charlotte’s christening in July 2015 and Trooping the Colour in June 2016.

Shots Fired at White House Correspondents' Dinner

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 8:17pm

A shocking security scare just occurred at the White House Correspondents' Dinner after gunfire erupted inside the hotel hosting the high-profile gathering.

According to early reports on Saturday, April 25, multiple shots were fired in the lobby at the Washington Hilton in Washington DC while President Donald Trump and several top administration officials were seated inside the ballroom. TMZ reports that the room reportedly included the president, first lady Melania Trump, vice president JD Vance, and multiple cabinet members attending the annual event.

Authorities said the suspected shooter is dead, reportedly after being confronted by a United States Secret Service agent. No other injuries have been reported.

Inside the venue, guests were left stunned as confusion spread through the room. The outlet reports that members of the media and attendees reportedly ducked under tables while others tried to figure out what was happening outside the ballroom.

The event had been moving forward normally moments earlier, with Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents' Association and a CBS News correspondent, delivering welcome remarks before inviting guests to begin dinner.

Following the incident, President Trump and others were seen leaving the ballroom as security protocols were activated. It remains unclear whether he plans to return.

An update from TMZ later indicated the dinner is expected to resume shortly, despite the dramatic interruption.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavittwas also at the event despite being nine months pregnant. Her attendance comes just one day after announcing her maternity leave. It is not currently clear if she has also evacuated the hotel.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available…

Sara Moulton Was Food Network's First True Star. What Really Happened to Her?

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 8:14pm

Before celebrity chefs became full-on media empires, there was a different kind of food star—calm, knowledgeable and genuinely focused on helping people cook at home.

Sara Moulton was one of the very first faces to define that approach on Food Network, long before the channel turned into the high-energy, competition-driven network we know today.

😋😋 SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & more in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter 🍳🍔

So what really happened to her? The answer says as much about the evolution of food TV as it does about Moulton herself.

Who Is Sara Moulton? View this post on Instagram

Sara Moulton is a classically trained chef, cookbook author and television host who built her reputation on practical, no-nonsense cooking. Before her TV fame, she worked behind the scenes in professional kitchens and even served as a personal chef to Julia Child—an experience that deeply shaped her approachable, teaching-first style.

Her focus has always been clear: make cooking less intimidating and more accessible for everyday people.

How Did Sara Moulton Get Her Start on Food Network?

Moulton joined Food Network in its earliest days in the 1990s when the channel was still figuring out what it wanted to be. Her show, Cooking Live, became a standout because it was exactly what it sounded like—live television, where anything could happen.

Viewers could call in with questions, mistakes weren't edited out, and Moulton guided audiences through recipes in real time. That authenticity made her one of the network's first true stars and helped establish Food Network's original identity as a place to learn how to cook.

Why Did Sara Moulton Leave Food Network?

Moulton didn't leave because her popularity faded—she left because the network changed. In the early 2000s, Food Network began shifting toward personality-driven shows, competitions and entertainment-focused programming.

That pivot meant less emphasis on traditional instructional cooking shows like hers. As a result, Cooking Live was eventually canceled. Moulton has been open about the transition, noting that the network moved in a direction that no longer aligned with her teaching-focused style.

What Is Sara Moulton Doing Now?

Moulton never stopped cooking or teaching. She went on to host Sara's Weeknight Meals on public television, wrote several cookbooks and has continued contributing to food media.

Her work today still reflects her original mission—helping home cooks get dinner on the table with confidence. She's also remained active through speaking, recipe development and online content.

Why Was Sara Moulton So Popular With Viewers?

Moulton's appeal came down to authenticity. She wasn't performing or competing—she was teaching. Viewers trusted her because she explained why recipes worked, not just how to follow them.

She also embraced imperfection. On live TV, things went wrong—and she handled it calmly, showing home cooks that mistakes are part of the process. That relatability made her feel less like a TV personality and more like a knowledgeable friend in the kitchen.

In many ways, Sara Moulton represents a version of food television that still resonates today—slower, more instructive and rooted in real life. And while the industry moved on, her influence never really disappeared.

Another shared, “Very sad news🕊️.”

“my prayers go out to her family and friends,” said a third.

Carrington first became known to many viewers in 2013 as part of Miss Dynamix, the trio that competed on The X-Factor

1967 Romance Hit Ranked Among Greatest American Movies 'Saved Cinema'

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 8:00pm

It's been over a year since Gene Hackman passed away, but he certainly won't be forgotten after a decorated career in Hollywood.

His second Academy Award arrived in 1993 for his supporting work in Unforgiven — and 25 years earlier, he was nominated in the same category for another renowned film. Bonnie and Clyde featured a stellar cast alongside Hackman and won two Oscars (with a whopping 10 nods).

The romance crime drama is nearing its 59th anniversary since being released in the U.S. and is ranked No. 27 on the American Film Institute's list of 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time. It currently holds a 91% average critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes despite facing controversy upon release for its excessive violence and favoring "the bad guys." Here's the official synopsis:

Small-time crook Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) tries to steal a car and winds up with its owner's daughter, dissatisfied small-town girl Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway). Their crimes quickly spiral from petty theft to bank robbery, but tensions between the couple and the other members of their gang — hapless driver C.W. (Michael J. Pollard), Clyde's suave older brother Buck (Hackman) and Buck's flibbertigibbet wife, Blanche (Estelle Parsons) — could destroy them all.

While certain critics were unsure what to make of Bonnie and Clyde as it hit the masses in 1967, Roger Ebert came onto the scene and boldly gave the film four of four stars, writing: "Bonnie and Clyde is a milestone in the history of American movies, a work of truth and brilliance. It is also pitilessly cruel, filled with sympathy, nauseating, funny, heartbreaking, and astonishingly beautiful. If it does not seem that those words should be strung together, perhaps that is because movies do not very often reflect the full range of human life."

Decades later, fellow critic Wael Khairy would also praise the film on Ebert's website, writing, "Bonnie and Clyde saved American cinema once. The time has come for it to save it again."

The Internet Reacts to New 'Stranger Things' Spinoff Show: 'I Want It Banned'

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 6:01pm

The new Stranger Thingsspinoff show, Stranger Things: Tales From '85, has just been released on Netflix, and already, fans of the franchise are once again divided. Tales From '85 is a canon show, set between Seasons 2 and 3 of the original Stranger Things series.

Although many of the most beloved characters, including the main kids, are back, the actors are different, as Tales From '85 is an animated series. This alone proved to be controversial, but backlash has intensified since the new episodes dropped. Although there are plenty of Stranger Things fans who have enjoyed the show, there are many who are thoroughly unhappy with it—and it seems the controversial Stranger Things finale is informing quite a bit of that frustration.

Among the complaints that fans who did not enjoy Tales From '85 have voiced is the fact that the show has introduced a new character, Nikki, who was never mentioned in the original show. Part of the issue with that, fans have expressed, is that Nikki has become increasingly important to the plot, yet no mention is ever made of her in Stranger Things. Viewers have also taken issue with how quickly the gang informed Nikki of the Upside Down, El's powers and myriad other secrets, which some felt was out of keeping with their original characterization.

There are also some concerns that Nikki is taking on a Robin role for Will, as Nikki is reminding Will that it's okay to be different. Some have expressed that this dilutes Robin's role in Will's journey, including his coming out scene in Season 5.

In addition to the introduction of Nikki, many are simply finding it frustrating to see Eleven on screen again, following her devastating fate in Stranger Things. Whether she died in the end or can never be with her friends and family again, her ending was gutting. Seeing her interact with the gang, and even have character development such as by trying to assert more independence, is just a reminder of how upsetting her conclusion was.

In fact, character development (or changes) have been yet another point of frustration, with many fans calling out particularly Mike Wheeler and Will Byers as feeling incongruent with their live action counterparts. One video, the caption for which said, "I'm so tired of this chopped show trying to rewrite the narrative" regarding Mike and Will's relationship, combined scenes from Stranger Things and Tales From '85 to show the differences. In the comments, the creator said, "I'm so serious I want it banned."

Along with those various frustrations, there has also been a slight resurgence of Conformity Gate—the belief that the finale was a fake-out and a real ending is coming. Some viewers have identified various 'clues' of Conformity Gate, such as a reference to the radio tower from Stranger Things Season 5. However, both the Duffer Brothers and cast members have thoroughly discredited this concept at this point.

Conformitygate still living rent free in my head 🤯 what if the finale wasn’t real… just a “perfect” version of reality and now Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 drops right between seasons… filling in gaps we didn’t even question before new characters, new monsters, hidden lore?? nah this feels intentional like they’re building backwards to prove something isn’t right vecna didn’t lose… we just accepted the version where he did #StrangerThings #ConformityGate #TalesFrom85

Amid these responses, there have also been fans of the original show who are just happy to see these characters return to the screen again. However, Tales From '85'sRotten Tomatoes scores, which currently sit at a 65% with critics and a 45% with audiences, speak for themselves.

How the Tin Can Landline Helped My Kids Connect Without Screens

I adore being a mother. But it has left me in an endless doom spiral full of existential dread. Reading Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generationlast year did very little to help, nor did poring through books on the difficulties of raising boys (Low attention spans! Excessive gaming!). The state of the world and the looming upheaval AI could have on the job market don't help.

Now, mind you, my kids are only four and six. I should probably chill out about their job prospects, but I don't thrive in uncertain times, which we are certainly in. That said, I do think there's something to be said for laying foundations for healthy habits, especially around technology. I was the mom who didn't let my kids watch TV until they turned two, and I have no shame toward parents who made different decisions, nor do I regret mine.

With that said, this winter, my family's screen time went off the rails. The weather and various health issues forced us to prioritize survival. Star Wars, Bluey and YouTube videos about Monster Trucks, squirrels and trains were nice oxygen masks. As the ground literally thawed and we started to emerge from perpetual triage mode on the home front, it was time to make shifts. But change is hard, and, for some reason, my kindergartener had four straight Fridays off from school.

Determined to stop using screens as a crutch, I jumped at the chance to try out Tin Can Landline. I hoped it would let my kids feel grown-up, joyful and connected without vegging out (nothing wrong with that sometimes, but I was done blowing through my usual limits for them). Did it work? Scroll on for my honest review of the Tin Can phone.

What Is Tin Can, Exactly?

Courtesy Beth Ann Mayer

The Tin Can landline is a "dumb phone," which is the name people use for analog phones or non-smartphones. Or, as Millennials, Gen-X and Boomers may call them, "the phones of our youth." It's a screen-free landline that uses modern technology (aka Wi-Fi).

The aim is to create a safe way for kids to connect that doesn't become overstimulating. There are no apps, games, texting capabilities, internet browsing or other things that can make smartphones and computers unsafe (because of very real issues like sextortion and cyberbullying), addictive and overstimulating.

Right now, the sixth "batch" of Tin Can phones are available for pre-order and cost $100 each. As the site explains, "Tin Can comes with free, unlimited calls to other Tin Cans, no subscription needed. It also includes 1 free month of our Party Line Plan, so you can talk with approved contacts who have regular phones."

How Tin Can Works

Courtesy Beth Ann Mayer

The Tin Can landline is bringing the analog phone experience back, which is totally on-trend this year, as adults lean into analog hobbies like puzzles and coloring. Here's how the Tin Can works.

  • An internet connection is required. The phone connects to your home Wi-Fi (you cannot use it in airports or hotels with public Wi-Fi). The Flashback model (currently unavailable) plugs into your router (Tin Can provides the Ethernet cable) and into a wall plug. The Tin Can (which we tried and is available for pre-order) plugs into the wall, and you use the app to connect to the Internet.
  • Putting power in parents' hands. There are safety controls, including set phone hours and the ability to turn on or off 911 calling. You can approve contacts and view call logs.
  • No apps, gaming or texting. It's a "dumb," screen-free phone.
  • It has some cool features, though. Kids can put people on speed dial and speaker phone to simplify their experience.

Setting up the Tin Can: First Impressions

Courtesy Beth Ann Mayer

I'll admit that I am often a little wary about trying new things and setting them up, but that's what my husband is for—just kidding, I helped a little. It actually wasn't that challenging to set up the Tin Can.

First, we unboxed it. The sunny yellow color was a breath of fresh air. After briefly smiling over the colorway, we plugged it in, then I scanned a QR code. It took me to the app where I got to "set the rules" for my kids.

I personally deactivated 911. I understand why some parents would want it. It can literally be life-saving, and many parents get their kids smartphones at a young age just in case there is an emergency. The Tin Can can help alleviate those fears, sans apps, videos and games. But my four-year-old asked if he could speak to a firefighter as I was setting it up, and that was a clear sign that we are not ready for 911 dialing privileges.

I also set the hours, cutting them off before my kids' bedtime. We planned to monitor all uses of the landline, but parents of tweens and teens may want to give their children privacy.

The QR code worked just fine for me. But if you don't have one or are having issues, you can plug "activate.tincan.kids" into a browser and go through the steps that way.

Then, we got to select a phone number for our kids. They got a traditional-looking number. But to call another Tin Can, they'd need to use a separate 10-digit number. It was a touch confusing at first.

We got two Tin Cans so that we could give one to each child and test out what it was like to call from a landline.

Tin Can Plans: 'Can 2 Can' Plan and 'Party Line' Plan Info

You can select from two plans for your child's Tin Can. Both options allow for 911 calling if you activate it. The free version my family used is the Can 2 Can plan. As the name implies, you can call other Tin Cans for free. The pros are that it's free and gives you and your family the benefit of a screen-free device. The con is that your child's friends or other family members must have a Tin Can.

The Party Line plan lets you call other family and friends on their regular landlines or cell phones. It costs $9.99 per month. Parents must approve callers—kids can't just start dialing carte blanche.

My Family's Experience

Courtesy Beth Ann Mayer

The setup was intuitive (but my kids were impatient)

If there was ever a sign that we needed a break from apps and videos that offer instant gratification with no effort, it was the setup process. My kids were stoked to have a phone but wanted it ASAP. Remember the days of dial-up internet? How would they have survived?

That said, I thought the setup was pretty straightforward, and I am someone who gets anxious about figuring out new things that involve wires and Internet connections.

I appreciated the controls

I let my kids run free on playgrounds, jump off top bleachers and race ahead of me on their bikes without batting an eyelash. But I have some deep fears about introducing devices. Yes, Tin Can is a landline without apps, but as a Millennial who spent hours yapping and not doing homework, I know anything without boundaries is problematic. And kids' brains are still developing. I appreciated the ability to set hours, view call logs, approve contacts and turn off 911 calling so my kids couldn't make social calls to firefighters.

There was a learning curve

If you pause for more than a few seconds between dialing numbers, the Tin Can may stop registering the digits. It effectively cancels the call, and the child has to start again. My kids are pretty young and inexperienced, so there was a lot of hand-holding as they dialed the numbers. Also, they thought the dial tone meant it was ringing–but that's a Gen Alpha problem, not a Tin Can problem.

They felt *so* cool

My kids loved having phones. They didn't care or ask where the apps and videos were. Instead, they adored calling one another from other rooms. It was so fun watching and listening to them as they experienced lower-stimulation joy. And? When it was time to stop, hang up and eat dinner, there were zero fights. I noticed a shift in their behavior from day one, and it continued as we spent more time using Tin Can and less time looking at devices.

Final Thoughts: Is Tin Can Worth It?

Courtesy Beth Ann Mayer

I absolutely think the Tin Can is worth it. In fact, I am likely going to surprise my mother with one this summer (I hope she stopped reading all my stories). She's going to wind down her time as our childcare provider as my youngest gets ready for a more full-time school experience. She'll live full-time in another state, and I think Tin Can would be a wonderful way to say thank you and make sure she knows how important and long-lasting we want her connection to our boys to feel.

The Tin Can is also something that can grow with our sons, and I am way more on board with it than a smartphone before they're in their mid- to late-teens. Connection is crucial, but it doesn't have to come with all the overstimulation of a smartphone. Tin Can nails that ideal.

If you're a parent, I highly recommend a Tin Can landline phone if you have similar thoughts around connection and fears of technology. I would keep in mind that the Tin Can has a learning curve, and it may be steeper and longer for younger kids than for teens and tweens with faster fingers.

2010s Alt-Rock Band’s No. 1 Hit Is Now One of Spotify’s Most Streamed Songs of All Time

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 5:30pm

When The Neighbourhood released "Sweater Weather” in 2012, it didn’t become an instant hit.

And no one could have predicted its staying power.

Released as the lead single from their album I Love You., the track quickly became the rock band’s defining hit.

And then, it carved out a path for itself as one of the most enduring songs, both in streaming and radio play.

Much of that initial success was driven largely by alternative radio, as “Sweater Weather” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.

Staying at the top for 11 non-consecutive weeks was not only impressive, but it was also a huge achievement for an emerging band.

The single did not see the same domination on the mainstream pop charts. Though it peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining there for 37 weeks, it didn’t happen until nearly a year after the song was released.

The slow-burn, however, worked in the song’s favor, as it later became a massive streaming phenomenon, overshadowing much of everything else they released, though other tracks like "Daddy Issues" and "R.I.P. 2 My Youth" have seen chart and streaming success.

"Sweater Weather" experienced a massive renaissance after going viral on Tumblr, Vine, TikTok, and, eventually, streaming.

14 years after its release, the track has now cemented a spot on Spotify's list of “most streamed songs of all time," landing in the third place behind The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You," according to the data released on April 23, 2026.

Variety credited it with bridging “the pre- and post-streaming eras by resonating with generations of netizens.”

Its longevity comes from the song feeling just as relevant in the present as it did upon its release almost a decade ago. “The internet really carried the song and clearly continues to carry it,” guitarist Zach Abels told the outlet in 2023. “I feel like we came out at the right time with social media and became a band that people can bond over on the internet.”

That year, it earned a RIAA diamond certification for sales in excess of 10 million song units, making it one of only 106 songs to reach the milestone at the time.

Abel and frontman Jesse Rutherford told the outlet the origin of the story is very nonchalant, as it was a riff Abel used to play all the time that they just turned into a song, noting he “didn’t have any plans for it.”

As for why it remains such a massive hit after all these years, NME credits its atmospheric indie-pop sound that captures the nostalgic “late-2010s aesthetic trends.”

And paired with melodic and catchy lyrics that tap into a “moody” and “romantic” feeling, it has become a seasonal anthem, making its way onto many fall-themed playlists year after year.

Could a '9 to 5' Reunion Ever Happen? '80s Star Shares Her Honest Take

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 5:29pm

Fans of the hit 1980 comedy9 to 5 have long been begging to see the stars reunite for a follow-up to the project, but if Lily Tomlin now says they probably shouldn't hold their breath.

When asked if she and costar Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton would ever consider an onscreen reunion or reboot, she told People, "I don't think we're going to break the back of that one."

Related: 45 Years Ago Today, Rock Hall Icon Scored Their First and Only No. 1 Hit on the Billboard Hot 100

While she and Fonda did collaborate for their 2015–2022 NetflixsitcomGrace and Frankie, she says a full reunion would be much more complicated. “I talk to Jane all the time,” Tomlin said. “But Dolly, you have to call her secretary. She's hard to reach. Plus, she's off there in Nashville.”

Still, the film holds a special place in fans' hearts. 9 to 5 starred Tomlin as Violet Newstead, Fonda as Judy Bernly, and Parton as Doralee Rhodes. The three women worked in corporate America, and exacted revenge on their sexist boss Franklin Hart, Jr., played by the late Dabney Coleman.

The movie was a major commercial hit, becoming one of the most successful films of its year. Though it was made on a relatively small budget of $10 million, it grossed over $103 million worldwide. It also helped launch Parton, Tomlin, and Fonda further into mainstream stardom and led to a TV adaptation and a Broadway musical.

Early on, all three actresses were openly enthusiastic about revisiting the beloved story, with Parton saying in a 2018 interview that “we are going to do another one" inspired by the #MeToo movement. "We are trying to get the script and all that, everyone is very interested, and we’ve all agreed that we’d love to do it if it’s right," she said.

Fonda echoed the sentiments, saying that all three of them were "intending to be in it" and that Rashida Jones had been tapped to write the script alongside original co-writer Patricia Resnick.

However, momentum on a direct sequel ultimately stalled. Reports allege that plans involving the original trio were dropped around 2019, despite years of discussion. However, in 2024, The Guardian reported that Jennifer Aniston's production company may have picked up the IP for a modern-day reimagining written by June write Diablo Cody. As of now, there are no further details on the reboot.

1999 Box Office Flop Became Movie With ‘Most Perfect Ending’

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 5:25pm

The first rule about Fight Club is you don’t underestimate Fight Club. Still, millions did just that back in October 1999, when David Fincher’s now-iconic psychological thriller starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt first rolled into theaters.

According to IndieWire, the film’s studio, 20th Century Fox, and the film’s director “clashed” over the marketing strategy pre-release.

🎬 SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬

View this post on Instagram

“[Fincher’s] idea was to take an in-your-face approach to the marketing in hopes of building viral word of mouth, but Fox preferred to play it safe by selling the film as simply a big studio film with movie stars and leaning into the fighting plot line by marketing Fight Club at wrestling events,” the outlet writes.

For anyone who’s seen the film, you know Fight Club is not just a bros’ fighting movie. Yes, a lot of the reel features shirtless dudes bare-knuckle brawling until their faces are permanently rearranged, but the underground fighting ring is ironically only the surface-level story. At its core, the film, based on the brilliant novel by Chuck Palahniuk, is about a deeply disturbed insomniac whose fractured sense of self spirals into mental collapse.

So, we can see why a marketing strategy targeting a very specific demographic was perhaps the wrong move: The studio both ignored selling to women who appreciate a good story (and Pitt half-naked) and coerced wrestling fans into a highbrow identity-crisis thriller charading as a battle royale flick. It’s like telling spaghetti Western fans they’re going to love The Assassination of Jesse James. They might, but probs not.

“The marketing didn’t work and Fight Club was a notorious box office bomb, only opening to $11 million and tapping out at $37 million at the U.S. box office. Fox spent $65 million on the movie,” IndieWire shares.

Over time, Fight Club developed a cult following, due in part to the stellar DVD release, selling 13 million copies. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the film was re-released into theaters, treating fans to a new 4K restoration for a one-night-only event (April 22). A 4K Ultra HD Steelbook and 4K Digital version is headed for release May 12. It’s clear word got out: Fight Club is awesome.

It’s even named as the very best thriller with the very best ending in Collider’s new ranking. We’d never give away spoilers away here, but if you haven’t seen the film and don’t know the shocker that’s soundtracked to the Pixies’ iconic “Where Is My Mind?,” what are you waiting for?

“After watching a sublimely cool film about unfettered male aggression, the woes of class disparity, the futility of capitalism, and the practical benefits of nihilism, the viewer is primed and ready for a unique ending,” Collider writes. “Most likely, though, very few people watching this film were prepared for the gloriously shocking finale.”

“It’s truly the perfect ending; visually, aurally, and psychologically,” they add.

Fight Club is streaming on Hulu.

1970 Classic Signature Song About Love Became a No. 1 Hit 56 Years Ago Today

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 5:09pm

Let's step back in time for a second. It’s April 25, 1970, and a new song by a group of rising young talents just took over the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100: ABC by TheJackson 5.

At the time, it was a major accomplishment for Black artists—and their second consecutive No. 1 hit—knocking "Let It Be" by The Beatles out of the coveted position on the list. It was a symbolic moment: a fresh, youthful sound replacing one of the most iconic bands in music history. And did anyone realize the true magnitude of what it would turn into? Probably not.

“ABC” wasn’t just a hit—it was a cultural phenomenon. Released in early 1970 as the title track from their second studio album of the same name, the song was crafted by The Corporation, the powerhouse Motown collective responsible for shaping the group’s early sound, according to Genius.

Related: Fans Say King of Pop’s Shocking ‘Thriller’ Ranking Among Biggest Halloween Songs Is Pure ‘Disrespect’

Built around a bright, irresistible melody and a schoolyard-inspired hook, “ABC” showcased the electric charisma of a youngMichael Jackson, whose lead vocals—at just 11 years old—burst with energy, precision, and undeniable star power.

The track followed the group’s debut single, "I Want You Back," which had already topped the charts earlier that year. With “ABC,” The Jackson 5 proved their success was no stroke of luck. In fact, they would go on to make history as the first group to have their first four singles hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100—a streak that continued with “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There.”

More than five decades later, the song remains one of the defining tracks of the Motown era, frequently ranking among the greatest pop songs of all time. Its playful simplicity—comparing love to learning the alphabet—helped make it instantly accessible, while its tight production and vocal performance elevated it far beyond a novelty hit.

The Rise of The Jackson 5

From early on, the group's rise was meteoric—and nothing could stop young Michael from taking over music.

Hailing from Gary, Ind., The Jackson 5—brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael—were signed to Motown by legendary founder Berry Gordy. Gordy positioned them as the label’s next breakout act, and the strategy paid off almost instantly. Their blend of polished choreography, infectious pop-soul sound, and youthful charm made them a crossover sensation, appealing to both Black and mainstream audiences at a time when the music industry was still deeply segmented.

'Michael' Spotlights The King of Pop's Early Beginnings

With the official release of Michael on Friday, April 24, a renewed interest in the life of Michael Jackson and his rise to fame has taken over the internet. Fans are clamoring for more details after watching the film starring Juliano Valdi, the late icon's nephew, Jaafar Jackson, Colman Domingo, Nia Long, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Larenz Tate, Miles Teller, Kendrick Sampson, Laura Harrier, and Mike Myers.

Across social media, viral videos have depicted fans dressing up as different versions of the beloved music legend to hit the theater, showing that the love runs deep for the star, who still holds records for the best-selling album of all time, Thriller, as the most successful entertainer of all time (recognized by Guinness World Records), plus many more.

Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, but one thing is certain: he remains the undisputed greatest entertainer of all time.

Hallmark Star Luke Macfarlane Shares Emotional Reason for Running London Marathon: ‘Send It for Murph’ (Exclusive)

Sat, 04/25/2026 - 5:01pm

When it comes to versatility, Luke Macfarlane is at the top of the list. Best known to fans for his status as a Hallmark hunk -- he's shot about two dozen films for the network -- that's just a small slice of his work. Last year, he appeared in the horror filmThis is Not a Test, and more recently, played Tim Allen's son on the TV series Shifting Gears. Since 2023, he's played lawyer-turned-author Charlie on the Apple TV series Platonic, starring alongside Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen.

But on April 26, he's taking part in a passion project that requires even more stamina and endurance: he's running the TCS London Marathon. In an exclusive interview, Macfarlane spoke with Parade about running with his partner, Hig Roberts, and Hig's twin sister, Cassady, to raise money for diabetes research.

A Family Mission for Breakthrough T1D

The three are running for Breakthrough T1D, the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy organization. The company, formerly known as JDRF, has been at the forefront of advancing research into type 1 diabetes and finding a cure.

View this post on Instagram

Luke, Hig, and Cassady's goal is simple: to raise awareness and funds for the disease that claimed the life of Roberts' little brother, Murphy. Macfarlane has currently raised about $8,500 of his $10,000 goal.

'Send it for Murph'

Murphy was hiking in Utah when he had a Type 1 diabetes-related seizure, which caused him to fall. The 22-year-old died from complications from the disease, with his family by his side.

Macfarlane never met Murphy, but he's such an important and integral part of their lives that the Platonic star has naturally participated in honoring his life, as well. One of these ways is with the phrase, "Send it for Murph." When Macfarlane and the Roberts' family go skiing, which is a big part of their lives, they unfailingly stop and say the phrase “Send it for Murph” once they reach a certain point on the mountain.

View this post on Instagram

As fate would have it, Macfarlane's family has a close connection to Sir Frederick Banting, the Nobel Prize-winning physician who discovered insulin. Macfarlane's grandfather attended college with Banting, and, according to Macfarlane, they were not only colleagues, but "they were really friends," he says.

From Space Soldiers to 'Bad Dentists'

If there's one of his characters in his three-decade-long career that would excel at a marathon, Macfarlane thinks it would be his Killjoys’ character, D'avin Jaqobis. He doesn’t think the space soldier would have any trouble running a marathon. However, while he thinks that all of his Hallmark characters could easily make it to the finish line, one character he just wrapped up probably wouldn’t make it.

That character, a "bad dentist," is one of Macfarlane's most unlikable roles. He’ll play the dentist -- based on a real person -- in an upcoming Lifetime film that he literally just finished filming before hopping on a plane to go to London.

Macfarlane recalls the character being such a jerk that those working on set would even comment on his nastiness. Those who are used to seeing Macfarlane portray down-to-earth, heart-of-gold characters will no doubt be surprised to see him play someone who could not only wish misfortune on others, but cause it.

From YA Dad to Real-Life Fatherhood

Before that, Macfarlane said he was in Ontario, finishing filming for the YA romance Into the Deep Blue. He plays Fiona’s (Sara Waisglass) father, Bob, who is navigating his teenage daughter's first love. As the father of almost-3-year-old Tess, he saw playing Bob as a small glimpse into his future.

For now, he’s enjoying the fact that Tess wants to go everywhere with him and Hig, even if that means he has to pull her in a wooden wagon he made for her that “doesn’t go more than two miles an hour," he jokes. Macfarlane loves woodworking in his spare time and even made Tess a crib and chair.

View this post on Instagram

Besides the Lifetime movie and Into the Deep Blue, filming for Season 3 of Platonic is scheduled to begin soon. And let’s not forget his Hallmark career, with the Caught by Love star revealing that he’s playing a cowboy in an upcoming 2026 Christmas film. He knows his schedule sounds crazy, but it’s worth it.

View this post on Instagram

“I work a lot for a while, and then I have a long time off,” he explained. He misses Hig and Tess while he’s working, but he’s looking forward to the days when Tess can travel with him.

Led Zeppelin and a Post-Race Pint

But for now, he's focused on running the London Marathon. While he wore an Apple Watch during the trio's 2023 New York Marathon, the constant alerts became more annoying than helpful. This time around, he's just got the basics. "I've got my running shorts, shoes, and a fanny pack for my gels," he says.

When it comes to his playlist, the Bros star also plans to keep it simple. He notes that he'll "probably have 12 songs" that he cycles through continuously, ranging from classical to rock. "There will definitely be some Led Zeppelin," he says.

While many people can't fathom running a grueling 26,2 miles, Macfarlane has a different way of looking at it. "It's kind of like a really long date," he says, reflecting on the fact that they haven't spent much time together while he's been working.

After he, Hig, and Cassady cross the finish line, Macfarlane plans to find a pub, even though he rarely drinks. "I haven't had a beer in about two years," he admits. "But I think I'll have a beer when I'm done."

The Emma Crossbody has tons of different storage spots, which is exactly what an everyday bag needs. It has an interior zippered pocket and two open pockets on the opposite side. It also comes with a detachable pouch that clips onto the wide strap, which is useful for smaller items such as keys. Shoppers love that it’s both functional and spacious.

Aside from its practicality and versatility, shoppers also adore this bag, saying it’s “classy,” “elegant,” and “stylish.” You can use it as an elevated work bag with the wide strap or carry it to special occasions sporting the thin leather strap.
