Carrie Underwood Could Live Off-Grid on Her Tennessee Farm
American Idol winner Carrie Underwood has a large farm in Tennessee that she and her family could live off of if they chose to live off grid.
"I think if I had to, I could be self-sustained at home," Underwood, 43, told Fox News Digital. "I love growing things. If I had all the time in the world, I would… not really need to go to the grocery store for too much. But it’s a lot of fun. You know, I love our chickens. We have cows, we have sheep, we have donkeys. We have horses. I have my garden, and it's a great way to connect with the earth. That's my contribution to the family."
"I feel like a lot of other responsibilities are mine," Underwood continued. "We have a farm manager who is wonderful… He's taking care of my sheep while I'm gone. He looks after the horses and things like that. We do as much as we can, but I'm obviously not there all the time, and neither is my husband, so we do have help."
Underwood along with her husband, Mike Fisher, and their two sons spend most of their time in Tennessee as a family. The "Before He Cheats" singer often shares updates from the farm on social media, whether it's welcoming a new baby goat or growing impressive crops.
While Underwood hasn't mentioned any plans to step away from the spotlight, she did make it clear that her priority in life is her family.
"I hope, more than anything, that's what they take away from me and that's what they remember about me. Like she was mom, and every once in a while she goes and gets on stage," she told Fox News Digital.
Underwood is a judge on American Idol Season 24, which premiered in January. The finale is set to air on Monday, May 11.

Katie Couric Makes Rare Comments About Matt Lauer’s Accuser, Brooke Nevils
Katie Couric is speaking out about Brooke Nevils, the woman who accused former Today anchor Matt Lauer of rape.
Couric, 69, and Lauer, 68, worked as co-anchors on the iconic morning show for nine years. While Couric departed the show in 2006, the duo was widely known for their tight relationship and strong on-screen chemistry. However, Couric made it clear in a recent appearance that she has nothing but sympathy for Nevils, who alleged she was raped in Lauer’s Sochi hotel room in 2014.
“I feel terrible for her,” Couric said at the City Harvest Presents The 2026 Gala: Shaken, Not Stirred, Page Six reported. “I think she’s very brave to write the book.”
Couric was referring to Nevils' book Unspeakable Things, which was published back in February.
Page Six also reached out to Lauer's lawyer for comment, but did not receive a response at the time of publication.

What Did Brooke Nevils Say About Lauer in Her Book?Nevils, who previously worked at Today, shared in Unspeakable Things that she went to Lauer’s hotel room in Sochi “drunk and alone.” There, he “insisted on having anal sex” with her. She woke up with pain that was “undeniable,” and it “hurt to walk,” she said in a book excerpt published in The Cut.
Lauer maintained that their relationship was “consensual” and called it “categorically false, ignores the facts, and defies common sense,” Variety reported.
In response to her initial allegations of rape, NBC responded with a statement that read: “Matt Lauer’s conduct was appalling, horrific, and reprehensible, as we said at the time. That’s why he was fired within 24 hours of us first learning of the complaint. Our hearts break again for our colleague.”
Where is Matt Lauer These Days?Lauer served as co-anchor on Today until 2017, when he was terminated. These days, he mostly flies under the radar. However, he was recently spotted with his girlfriend, Shamin Abas, in Sag Harbor, New York, on Monday, March 23, PEOPLE reported. The rare sighting of the duo, who prefer to keep a low profile, came almost two months after the release of Nevils' memoir.

'Storage Wars' Star Was 'Terrified for His Life' Before Shocking Death, Co-Stars Say
Darrell Sheets rose to fame on A&E's Storage Wars. On April 22, TMZ reported that Sheets had died by apparent suicide at 67. Over the past couple of days, Sheets' reality television co-stars have spoken out about his sudden death amid reports that he had been been a victim of cyberbullying.
In a new interview, Laura and Dan Dotson spoke out about what Sheets—who left Storage Wars in 2023 after 15 seasons—had been going through prior to his death.
"His family told us that this has been happening for three years," Laura told Us Weekly. "[It happens to] even strong men that you think aren’t gonna get their feelings hurt. Cyberbullying is a real thing. This made him feel less than, and it really obviously bothered him. He was terrified for his life [and] for the people around him. He didn’t know why he was being targeted."
"He had other things also," Dotson continued. "His health and certain things that might have contributed to [his death]. Relationships, love interests and stuff that would go up and down, but [he] truly, truly was a wonderful, loving person who believed in God."
A&E's Rene Nezhoda previously spoke out what was going on behind the scenes in Sheets' life.
"He had a guy like really, really tormenting him lately on cyberbullying,” Nezhoda said in a video posted to Instagram. "Just because you watch us on television doesn’t mean you know us. It doesn’t mean you know what we’re about. Also, it doesn’t entitle you to bully somebody."
"Darrell has been posting a lot about the guy that’s been cyberbullying him and tormenting him, and I really hope they look into that guy, and it’s just not a pass, because it’s just not right, guys… You never know what demons somebody faces and what they go through, and what you might push them through," he continued.
Authorities are investigating the cyberbullying claims.
"The Lake Havasu City Police Department [of Arizona] is aware of the cyberbullying accusations, and it is a part of the current active investigation," Sgt. Kyle Ridgway told Entertainment Weekly.

Jamie Lynn Spears, 35, Celebrates Daughter’s High School Graduation: See How Similar They Look
Jamie Lynn Spears posted to Instagram on April 24, speaking about her daughter Maddie’s high school graduation, which is coming up soon. The 35-year-old found out she was pregnant with Maddie, her first child, when she was a teenager filming Zoey 101 on Nickelodeon. She welcomed her to the world with her ex-boyfriend, Casey Aldridge, in June 2008.
“Welp….the grad invites are sent, the cap and gown arrived, and the last regular day of school is here,” the actress said in this Instagram post, which contains several photos of her daughter, who looks just like her. “I guess the lovely state of denial that I forced myself to be in has to end, bc the reality of time is coming at me like a freight train. I know the saying 'the days are long, but the years are short' is one of the most cliche sayings, bc it’s said so much, but I now know that cliches are only said so much bc they continue to ring true in every lifetime throughout the test of time."
View this post on InstagramShe continued, “Having the privilege of watching your children grow up is one of the most beautiful & fulfilling things we can experience as humans, and I am so grateful for each every up & down moment throughout the journey of motherhood this far. It’s bittersweet, bc you’re so proud of everything they have accomplished this far, and so excited to watch everything that their future will bring, while also longing for them to stay your baby forever.”

Spears also reflected on how fortunate she was, and encouraged others to enjoy their time with their children while they can. “I know I’m one of luckiest mamas in the world, so I’ll stop my rambling now, until I completely lose it on graduation day," she said. "I’ll leave ya with another cliche, go love on your babies, and really REALLY try to be present, no matter what else is going on in your professional or personal life, bc you will NEVER regret spending time with your kids.”
One commenter on the post said, “Mama cried reading this. Still clinging to long days. Congrats to Maddie and hugs to you.” Another pointed out that her daughter “looks so much like you!”
Spears also has a daughter named Joan, with her husband Jamie Watson, who is 8.

Maura Higgins' net worth in 2026 is growing by the day.
The Traitors alum, who will compete on Dancing With the StarsSeason 35, has reportedly been fielding actual acting roles in addition to being a reality show stalwart.
“[There’s] a lot of exciting conversations with designers. Obviously, I really love fashion, so there’s a lot happening around that, which I literally could scream about. [I’m] also having exciting conversations with producers and execs in the scripted world, which could be very different for me,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s stuff happening that I could have only ever dreamt of, things that are on my vision board that I probably never thought would become a reality.”

While she was cagey about specifics, a source spilled on some scripted possibilities.
"Maura is keeping her cards close to her chest, but she couldn’t help but tell pals she’s reading scripts for Disney," a loose-lipped insider told The Sun. "Everyone—including Maura—is stunned at how well her career in the U.S. is going. This is just the beginning."
It's great that her career is going well, because Higgins is a pretty big spender. The Sun estimates that the stunner's glam squad can cost roughly $10,000 per day—and that's without factoring in travel costs.

Higgins makes the bulk of her bucks from reality TV.
In addition to her stateside star turn on The Traitors, as a contestant on Love Island Season 5 in 2019, she likely made about $500 per week, which isn't much—but it was a worthwhile investment considering how much money she's made since first appearing on the show.
She's since gone on to host Love Island USA: Aftersun, Love Island Games: Aftersun and Glow Up. Higgins has also competed on other shows including Cooking With the Stars, Dancing on Ice and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!.
Dancing on Ice contestants reportedly earn $27,000 and $135,000.

While salaries for I'm a Celebrity... can vary from celebrity to celebrity and season to season, some contestants reportedly make more than $30,000 per day, and Higgins lasted 19 days on the show. That means, if she commanded the $30,000 daily rate, she would've made $570,000.
She starred in her first movie, The Spin, in February 2026.

Her work as an influencer and brand endorser is also particularly lucrative.
Higgins previously had a makeup line with Irish brand Inglot Cosmetics and appeared in videos for makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic (famous for his work with Kim Kardashian) promoting his makeup line. She currently has her own eyelash line at Primark and is one of the faces of MAC Cosmetics in Ireland and the U.K. Outside of the beauty realm, Higgins has appeared in ads for Just Eat (a food and restaurant delivery service) and Greggs (a sandwich cafe). While her paydays for each aren't public, chances are she didn't work for cheap!
According to The Sun, she commanded about $7,000 per sponsored Instagram post back in 2023 when she had 3.7 million Instagram followers, and that payday is likely substantially higher now: She now has 4.3 million followers thanks to the success of The Traitors.
The Sun also reported in February 2026 that Higgins landed a six-figure deal with Victoria's Secret, though the specific figures weren't revealed. She previously had a deal with Ann Summers, a sex toy and lingerie chain, valued at about $676,000.

That said, we know she'll at least make the $125,000 contestants receive for 20 hours per week of training before the season starts.
From there, she'll make $10,000 for weeks three and four, $15,000 for week five, $20,000 each for weeks six and seven and $30,000 each for weeks eight and nine. If she makes it to the semi-finals and season finale, she'll get an additional $50,000 for each of those weeks.

Cyndi Lauper is a Grammy-award winning artist known for her hit songs like “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” “Time After Time” and “True Colors.” She has sold over 50 million records worldwide and has recently finished her Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Tour, which she called her farewell tour.
“It’s an arena tour, which I haven’t done in a long time,” she told USA Today in 2024. “I just want to thank everybody, say goodbye, celebrate with fans that have been so loyal and sweet and were there for every crazy-ass concert or thing that I did and I’m excited about doing it. I don’t think physically in another five years I will be as good, but now I can do it, you know?”
Although the farewell tour has ended, Lauper isn’t done performing yet. She has just launched her first Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, meant for fans who missed the tour.

As reported by Us Weekly, someone in the crowd started shouting at her while she was up on stage. The music icon said, ““I don’t know what the f*** he’s saying. Please remember where you are, OK?”

1968 Coming-of-Age Hit That Launched a Future Star Was No. 1 58 Years Ago Today
A 1968 coming-of-age hit that helped launch one of Hollywood’s most unlikely stars was the No. 1 movie in America 58 years ago today.
That film is The Graduate, which topped the box office from March 7 through June 12, 1968, and went on to become the highest-grossing movie of the year.
Directed by Mike Nichols, the film starred Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate drifting through early adulthood when he becomes entangled in an affair with an older married woman, Mrs. Robinson, played by Anne Bancroft. The story takes a turn when Benjamin falls for her daughter, Elaine, played by Katharine Ross.
At the time, Hoffman was an unlikely leading man, but the role turned him into a star and helped redefine what a Hollywood leading actor could look like. The film itself struck a chord with audiences for its portrayal of post-college uncertainty and generational disillusionment, themes that still resonate decades later.
Released in late 1967, The Graduate became a box office phenomenon, grossing more than $100 million domestically and eventually earning seven Academy Award nominations. Nichols won the Oscar for Best Director, cementing the film’s place in Hollywood history.
Its legacy has only grown over time. The American Film Institute ranked The Graduate among the greatest American films ever made, placing it at No. 7 on its original list and No. 17 in its later update. The film was also selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry for its cultural and historical significance.
The film’s influence can also be seen in how often its most famous scenes have been referenced and parodied in pop culture, from television comedies to modern films. Its ambiguous final shot, with Benjamin and Elaine sitting silently on a bus as their expressions shift, remains one of the most talked-about endings in movie history. That moment, in particular, helped cement The Graduate as more than just a hit—it became a cultural touchstone that continues to spark conversation about love, adulthood and uncertainty.
From its iconic performances to its unforgettable soundtrack featuring Simon & Garfunkel's iconic songs "Mrs. Robinson" and "The Sound of Silence," The Graduate remains one of the defining films of its era—and a reminder of the moment a new kind of Hollywood star was born.
Cybill Shepherd, 76, Hits the Red Carpet After Sharing She Patched Things up With Bruce Willis
Cybill Shepherd rarely hits the red carpet these days, but the TV legend and boss-lady blonde is back in action and looking better than ever.
Shepherd, 76, who played Madelyn Hayes on the detective comedy-drama Moonlighting opposite Bruce Willis, went on to play a Hollywood actress in the beloved sitcomCybill with Christine Baranski. She's still going strong as an actress, but tends to run below the radar when it comes to public appearances. But the legend hit the red carpet last week at the 26th Annual Beverly Hills Film Festival Closing Night Gala at The Beverly Hilton, and looked every bit as lovely as she did back in the '80s on Moonlighting.

Shepherd Reveals She Patched Things Up With Bruce WillisShepherd starred alongside legendary actor Bruce Willis in the comedy-drama Moonlighting from March 1985 to May 1989. However, the duo had a tempestuous relationship. Last year, Shepherd revealed to PEOPLE that she was able to mend fences with Willis before he revealed his battle with aphasia.
"Yes, I'm very grateful for that," she said, adding, "Yeah, it was time."
Shepherd has previously referred to Willis as a "jerk" in the tabloids. However, after Willis received his diagnosis, Shepherd made it clear that all was clear between the two when she told Extra, "I will always love Bruce.”
What is Cybill Shepherd Up to These Days?Shepherd has been fostering her musical skills with a new jazz club act. Last year, the blonde shared about her act in a promo video for the Catalina Jazz Club in Los Angeles. Titled “An Evening with Cybill Shepherd,” the Hollywood icon speaks to the camera in the throaty voice that’s perfect for a jazz club singer.
“It’s an evening of music, conversation, and stories,” Shepherd tells the camera. “Join us!”

’60s Icon Named ‘Most-Nominated Filmmaker’ of All Time Without an Oscar Award
Hollywood has long celebrated many of its greatest filmmakers who left a powerful mark on the industry, yet Stanley Kramer remained one of the most talked-about cinematic figures of the ’60s era.
Considered the end of Hollywood’s Golden Age, the 1960s produced a slew of notable directors who delivered remarkable classics, from Psycho’sAlfred Hitchcock, 2001: A Space Odyssey’s Stanley Kubrick and Romeo and Juliet’s Franco Zeffirelli, among others.
However, Kramer managed to break into the mainstream with his masterful films that tackled significant social issues.
Celebrated as one of Hollywood’s most prominent directors and producers, he is known for his message-driven classics such as Inherit the Wind, Judgment at Nuremberg and more, which sparked cultural conversation and challenged audiences.
Throughout his filmmaking career, the New York native earned not only massive buzz from viewers but also multiple nominations from major award-giving bodies like the Academy Awards.
Has Stanley Kramer Ever Won an Oscar?Kramer received a total of 80 Oscar nominations, including nine for his work as both a director and producer.

His first Best Director nomination was at the 1958 Oscars for the movie The Defiant Ones, but he lost to David Lean for The Bridge on the River Kwai.
Three years later, he received another nomination in the same category at the 34th Academy Awards for Judgment at Nuremberg, with the award ultimately going to Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins for West Side Story.
His last Best Director nomination was during the 40th Academy Awards for his 1967 movie Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Unfortunately, it was Mike Nichols for The Graduate who took home the coveted title.
Beyond his directorial nominations, Kramer also received individual nods for the Best Picture category in his films such as High Noon, The Caine Mutiny, The Defiant Ones, Judgment at Nuremberg, Ship of Fools and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, yet none secured him an Oscar at the time.
The possible reason for Kramer failing to secure an Oscar win was the stiff competition in the Best Director and Best Picture categories, as well as his distinct filmmaking style.
Despite never winning an Oscar in a competitive category, he achieved his sought-after Academy Award legacy when he was honored with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1962.
Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the special recognition is considered one of the most prestigious honors and the highest distinction a producer can receive from the Oscars.
'The Surprising Treatment That Improved My Inflammation in Just 30 Days'
Many individuals have inflammation without even knowing it. Sure, this condition can present visible signs like redness and swelling, but sometimes, it isn’t as obvious. I’ve always had stomach problems, meaning everything seems to bother my stomach. After trying various diets and cutting out certain food groups like dairy—all of which were challenging to stick with long-term—I decided to give acupuncture a try.
My first session proved to be eye-opening. I learned I have inflammation in my gut—something my acupuncturist was able to tell simply by looking at my tongue. Crazy, right? And guess what? Inflammation can cause bloating and general discomfort. I felt I was in the right place.
I had always been curious—albeit skeptical—about acupuncture. My concerns were mainly because I didn’t truly understand how it worked. I learned that acupuncture involves the insertion of tiny needles in certain pressure points that contain a high concentration of nerve endings. The needles essentially activate the nervous system to help alleviate pain and reduce stress. By boosting blood flow, acupuncture also supports the body’s natural healing process and may help keep inflammation at bay.
“From a Traditional East Asian Medicine perspective, acupuncture is all about restoring flow. We talk about qi (vital energy) and blood moving through channels in the body—when that flow gets stuck or disrupted, we see symptoms like pain, inflammation, digestive issues or even emotional tension,” explains Dr. Haley Parker, L.Ac., HFSer, licensed acupuncturist and VUIM director of clinical operations (Virginia University of Integrative Medicine). “One of my favorite ways to explain this to patients is: The body doesn’t speak English, it speaks symptoms. Acupuncture helps us ‘translate’ and guide the body back into balance. I tell my patients that I take their clues and triangulate a diagnosis based on their signs and symptoms, pulses and tongue diagnosis. I then pick a point prescription, like 'coding to the brain’ to help reset the body and guide it to balance.”
I was curious to see whether acupuncture would move the needle—pun intended!—in helping to resolve the gut issues I’ve had over the past 10 years. Here’s what to know about my experience trying acupuncture for 30 days and how it improved my inflammation.

What Is Inflammation and How Can Acupuncture Help?First and foremost, to fully understand my acupuncture experience, it’s important to know everything there is to know about inflammation. According to Doug Bertram, M.S., L.Ac., MTCM, the founder & CEO of Structural Elements, who has 30+ years of experience in the acupuncture space, inflammation is typically characterized by heat, swelling, redness and pain.
That said, inflammation technically isn’t a bad thing—it’s simply part of the healing process after experiencing stress, imbalance or injury.
“The problem is when the body gets stuck there. Instead of resolving and moving into repair, inflammation becomes chronic—and that’s when it starts to wear down tissues, disrupt normal function and contribute to issues like pain, fatigue, digestive problems and even mood changes,” Dr. Parker explains.
Many individuals with inflammation turn to acupuncture, as it helps boost blood flow and promotes the release of anti-inflammatory mediators, including neuropeptides and endorphins.
“This process enhances the body’s healing response through mechanotransduction, where the mechanical stimulation of needles activates sensory neurons, modulating inflammatory pathways via the central nervous system. This interaction can alter cytokine profiles and reduce pro-inflammatory markers,” Bertram tells Parade.

My Experience Doing Acupuncture for 30 DaysI went to Bo Acupuncture Healing in Westport, Connecticut. What drew me to this clinic was Bo’s focus on digestive issues and pain management. I was surprised to learn the wide spectrum of conditions acupuncture can help treat and navigate, including Lyme disease, menopause, fibromyalgia, arthritis, infertility and so much more.
My test period included weekly one-hour sessions. The shades were drawn in the treatment room, creating a very relaxing, spa-like environment that promoted pure rest. Each session began with me lying down on my back. My acupuncturist then inserted about 16 to 18 needles in various parts of my body, including my forehead, abdomen, legs and feet. I expected the needles to pinch or feel uncomfortable. Although everyone’s pain tolerance varies, I barely noticed them.

I remained still with the needles inserted, under two heat lamps to warm my body and simply relax me—a rare treat during a busy workday! After half an hour, I rolled over and she repeated the same process on my back.
Every other session, my acupuncturist also performed “cupping” on the small of my back, which involved placing plastic cups to suction out toxins, boost circulation and loosen up tight muscles.

The ResultsAfter my first session, my gut definitely felt lighter. It made me look forward to my next visit and I was hopeful that I was finally on the right path.
“After treatment, you can literally watch their body downshift. Shoulders drop, breathing deepens and often their pain or inflammation begins to ease—not because we ‘forced’ anything, but because we helped the body regulate itself again; it is healing from the inside out, so the symptoms start to subside, like the inflammation,” Dr. Parker explains.
That said, acupuncture requires consistency and a well-rounded approach to see noticeable changes.
“Acupuncture doesn’t replace diet, exercise or medication—it enhances those things. It helps regulate the body so it can respond better to all those inputs,” Dr. Parker points out. “I always tell patients this is lifestyle medicine—acupuncture works best when it’s part of a bigger picture that includes sleep, nutrition, movement and stress management.”
I’m a firm believer in making healthy lifestyle adjustments in addition to trying out a method such as acupuncture. For me, that included eliminating processed foods and reducing sweets. I prioritized simple yet healthy homemade meals, complete with protein and vegetables. I even started to make my own freshly squeezed citrus juices in the morning and added deep belly breathing exercises to my routine to alleviate stress.
Thirty days into my self-designed treatment plan, I’m surprised that my inflammation seems to have decreased and my stomach doesn’t bother me every time I eat something. My collective efforts have totally improved my gut health.
So, will I be sticking with acupuncture? Absolutely.

Beloved ’80s Icon Looks Unrecognizable in Rare Outing With Wife
New photos of David Hasselhoff, posted by Page Six, are turning heads after the former Baywatch star was spotted during a rare public outing with his wife, Hayley Roberts. The 73-year-old actor was unrecognizable in the new images, prompting a wave of reactions across social media as longtime fans commented on his changed appearance and low-profile lifestyle in recent years.
Hasselhoff was seen walking while holding on to a walker in the West Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles this week. He was wearing a pair of dark pants, a gray T-shirt and had a heavier sweatshirt draped over his shoulders.
A rep for the actor told the outlet that he'd undergone knee and hip replacement surgery and was "doing well."
Page Six posted the pictures on social media where they quickly went viral, with well over one million views. Fans reacted on social media sites like X.
"A gentle reminder that even icons like David Hasselhoff face the realities of aging and recovery. Wishing him continued progress in physical therapy and more peaceful outings with his wife ahead," one person wrote.
"What people often forget is that behind every icon is a person living normal battles quietly. Mobility, health, time, change, fame never stops those things. Should celebrity culture show more compassion around aging?" someone else said.
"No way in holy hell is anyone going to convince me that this is David Hasselhoff. NO way," a third comment read.
"His decline over such a short period of time is unbelievable. He is unrecognizable," a fourth fan added.
Hasselhoff is best-known for his roles in television shows like Knight Rider and Baywatch. According to his IMDb page, he is still working, though he appears to be taking on selective projects. He completed work on Kung Fury 2, which is upcoming, and is set to appear in C'est Magique! alongside Larry Cech.

1988 Tom Cruise Film Ranked One of the 'Best Guilty Pleasure Movies' of All Time
Guilty pleasure films aren’t always critical darlings or standouts in terms of story or production, but they have a way of sticking with audiences all the same. No matter the reviews, fans keep coming back to them, like a 1988 film starring Tom Cruisethat many may have forgotten but still holds a certain charm.
By the late '80s, Cruise became a star in Hollywood after playing the role of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun. He also appeared in The Outsiders and Risky Business, but in 1988, he starred in the leading role of the romantic comedyCocktail. IMDb ranks the film at No. 3 on the list of the Best Guilty Pleasure Movies, with fans calling the film "simple entertainment." Others call the film "mindless, but still fun" and a "trip back to the 80's."
Directed by Roder Donaldson, Cocktail's storyline was written by Heywood Gould based on his book of the same name. The story appears simple: a business student becomes a bartender, travels to Jamaica, and falls in love. Cruise played the leading role of Brian Flanagan, a naive and shallow young man who returns to New York after being discharged from the Army.
His hopes of get-rich quick and landing a high-powered business job fail, and he becomes a bartender while attending business school. Two years later, Brian is in Jamaica as a bartender, and personal setbacks and betrayal force him to reassess his priorities, leading him to seek a more meaningful path in life and love.

Cocktail was a box office success, grossing over $171 million at the box office against its $20 million budget. The movie became the eighth highest-grossing film of 1988, but didn't sit well with critics. Rotten Tomatoes commented, "There are no surprises in Cocktail, a shallow, dramatically inert romance that squanders Tom Cruise's talents in what amounts to a naive barkeep's banal fantasy."
After criticism, Gould commented that he "was not happy with the final product" and was accused of having gone against his own work. Cruise also admitted to Cocktail not being a "crowning jewel" in his career. Despite their dislike for the film, fans tagged it a guilty pleasure, with one fan saying, it's "a classic 80’s film. Amazing music. Powerful acting performances. Gritty and realistic. Full of fun but also serious moments when needed."
