74-Year-Old Pat MacDonald Wrote a Top 20 Hit You Still Hear Today
Some songs have a way of sticking around long after their original moment in pop culture. For Pat MacDonald, that song is the instantly recognizable "The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades," the 1986 hit he wrote as part of the duo Timbuk3.
MacDonald, who turned 74 on Aug. 12, 2026, had already been writing and performing music for years when the song changed the trajectory of his career. He and Barbara Kooyman formed Timbuk3 in the 1980s, eventually moving to Austin, Texas, where they began building their unusual sound around guitars, vocals and a boombox serving as their rhythm section.
"The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" was originally written by MacDonald in 1983, before Timbuk3 had become a national act. The idea for the title came from a phrase Kooyman had said, and MacDonald turned it into a song with a much darker sense of humor than the title might suggest.
When Timbuk3 released the song as a single in 1986, it became the group's breakout hit. The song climbed to No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it a genuine Top 20 hit.
And despite the song's upbeat-sounding title, its meaning wasn't quite as sunny as generations of listeners may have assumed.
The lyrics are delivered from the perspective of a cocky college student who believes everything is going his way. MacDonald told the Los Angeles Times in 1986 that the character represented a particular attitude of the time, someone essentially thinking that things were fine for him, so why worry about anything else.
That irony didn't stop the song from becoming a cultural fixture. It was frequently interpreted as an optimistic graduation anthem, while the band itself understood the darker joke underneath it. MacDonald later explained that he wasn't actually trying to write a hit when he wrote the song.
He was simply trying to write songs and make albums.
The unexpected success brought plenty of attention to Timbuk3. The duo earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 1987, and the band went on to make additional albums and tour internationally.
They also appeared on television programs including Saturday Night Live, Late Night With Conan O'Brien and Austin City Limits.
Timbuk3 eventually split in the mid-1990s, but MacDonald's music career continued. He went on to record and perform as a solo artist, but "The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" remained the song most closely associated with his name.

While she called New Girl "very funny" and a "great show," Curtis explained that the method of shooting clashed greatly with her approach to comedy, something that led to a bitter experience filming her appearance.
“It’s a great show, New Girl, very funny, but doing it is just like doing a movie,” Curtis went on to explain. “You know, you’ve got a camera crew, and nobody laughs. It’s silent, and it’s awful. For me, awful. Single-camera comedies, for me, not fun.”
Starring Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone, New Girl premiered on Fox in 2012, running for a total of seven seasons before concluding in 2018.

Every year, millions of music fans flock to Memphis to honor Elvis Presley's life and tour his home, Graceland, stepping through the famous music gates and paying their respects at its Meditation Garden.
Yet, through all the decades of tours and millions of visitors passing through its front door, one part of the legendary estate has remained completely untouched: the entire second floor, including Presley’s private bedroom.
Presley's residence is honored in a new Instagram post on his official site. A rarely seen image of the King of Rock and Roll was shared, along with a quote about his hopes for the home, made when he first purchased it in March 1957.

View this post on InstagramPresley said of the property, "This is going to be a lot nicer than Red Skelton’s house when I get it like I want it.” He took immense pride in turning the 13-acre Memphis estate into his personal haven, creating a lavish home that reflected every bit of his larger-than-life success.
During the 20 years the entertainer resided at Graceland, the upstairs area was private. No one was allowed in the rooms, which included his bedroom, a dressing room, a bathroom, an office, and another bedroom and bath that would eventually belong to the daughter he shared with Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie Presley, unless they were invited.

The rooms took on a mythical quality on August 16, 1977, after Presley died in his bathroom of what was said to be a heart attack, as reported by The Commercial Appeal. The upstairs was sealed just as Presley left it after his death and has remained untouched to this day at the family's request.
Elvis Australia reprinted comments by Presley's cousin, Billy Smith, who described the upstairs layout. Smith explained, "Originally, you went up the stairs, and to the left were two huge double doors, and they were padded at that time. And you went in, and there were two more double-type doors. One led to the office, which was his office; the other led to his bedroom, and then off his bedroom was his bathroom."

Smith continued, "But before you went through the double doors, if you went around the little hall area, where his dressing room now is, it was a bedroom. It was just an extra bedroom, and over to the right was another bedroom. Grandma [Minnie Mae] stayed there for a short period of time, and then they moved her downstairs after I think Gladys [Presley, Elvis' mother] died."
He concluded, "That was basically about it. And then later the bedroom, Grandma's, became Lisa's room. And the bedroom that was joined to Elvis' bathroom had taken the wall out, and it was his dressing room and bathroom altogether."
The only people currently allowed in the suite of rooms to maintain it are Graceland's VP of Archives and Exhibits, Angie Marchese, and members of the Presley family. However, a handful of other famous people have been invited by the family to see the suite.

The first was Nicolas Cage, briefly married to Lisa Marie. He told The New York Times, "My ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley and I, there were a couple of nights at Graceland where she wanted to go upstairs, and so I did."
He added, "I remember lying in Elvis’ bed, and he had one of those little fiber-optics things that spin and change colors. I remember staring at that and being very relaxed by it and calmed by it, and I enjoyed thinking of him looking at that and how it must have relaxed him. It was a beautiful, poignant little moment in my life."
Realtor.com reported that Oprah Winfrey was allowed access upstairs by Lisa Marie's eldest daughter, Riley Keough. Additionally, Lisa Marie allowed Elvis movie director Baz Luhrmann and its star, Austin Butler, to see the suite of rooms as part of his research for the film.
Luhrmann told Zach Sang during an appearance on his podcast, "I had the great privilege and great sadness of visiting up in the bedroom for 20 minutes. No video, no nothing, just had to remember everything."
In an exclusive Parade Magazine interview at Graceland's entertainment complex, Angie Marchese, the home's VP of Archives and Exhibits, revealed that after years of caring for Presley's private upstairs quarters, she was stunned to learn of a personal item he left behind.
"It’s part of my job to maintain the upstairs. I go up there all the time to make sure that everything’s fine, there’s nothing, you know, crazy going on, and clean up the sinks and clean the toilets," she explained.
“The bed’s really low and the carpet’s really high, and the comforter that’s on the bed hits the floor. We don’t vacuum the carpet because it is so fragile. So it’s not like we pick it up and vacuum it and put it back down. And I never looked under the bed.”
Marchese concluded, “So fast forward, about a month or two later, I had to go upstairs. I was pulling things for an exhibit in London. I’m sitting there on the floor, and I just flipped the bedspread, and lo and behold, there’s a pair of blue slippers right under the bed, and they’re still there.”

Perez Hilton's Mom Files For Temporary Custody of His Three Children After Self-Harm Incident
Perez Hilton's mom, Teresita Lavandeira, has filed for temporary custody of the celebrity blogger’s three children. This comes after Hilton was hospitalized due to a self-harm incident.
According to court papers obtained by Page Six, Lavandeira has filed for temporary custody of the three children — Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8 — on August 7, and Hilton has “voluntarily consented” to the custody request.
Police responded to Hilton's Miami home after the blogger appeared to be harming himself during a livestream. In the video, he was covered in blood and was using an object to cut himself. Following the incident, Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Page Six that they received “multiple calls” of “an individual live-streaming acts of self-harm on social media” on the night of Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Hilton was then safely transported to the hospital, with his family providing an update on Saturday, Aug. 8, saying that he “remains hospitalized under Florida’s Baker Act.” His condition is “serious but stable.”
The Baker Act, also known as the Florida Mental Health Act of 1971, is a law that allows doctors, mental health practitioners, judges, and law enforcement officers to detain someone experiencing a mental health crisis, according to the Florida Department of Children and Families.
“He experienced significant blood loss and sustained additional injuries that will require surgery in the coming days,” the family's statement read. “His treatment and recovery will be a long process.”
His family also revealed that his children, niece, and sister were home minutes before his livestream began, but when it was apparent he was "experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself,” they “immediately fled” the house.
Following the incident, which was livestreamed on TikTok, the social media site has banned his account.

The bloom is off the rose for Below Deck Mediterranean deckhand Cooper Dawson, as fans call him out for his player behavior during the latest episode.

According to Amex Travel’s 2026 Global Travel Trends Report, an overwhelming 87% of global travelers now intentionally leave open room in their itineraries for spontaneous discoveries and local experiences rather than packing every hour with tours.
Speaking with Parade, Audrey Hendley, President of American Express Travel, explains that travelers are finally giving themselves permission to slow down:
"I think people are giving themselves permission to travel differently than they used to," Hendley says. "There was a time when a great vacation meant seeing as much as possible. Today, people are much more focused on coming home feeling like they really experienced a place. That might mean discovering a destination through its food, taking a local workshop, celebrating a milestone with family or friends, or simply leaving enough room in the itinerary to wander."

The Rise of the "Hotel-First" GetawayAmex Travel

Lindsay Clancy Trial: Can a Person Speak With a 'Crushed Thyroid'? (Exclusive)
Lindsay Clancy's ability to speak after suffering severe injuries to her neck has become a point of discussion surrounding her case, with some questioning whether a person could talk after sustaining what has been described as a "crushed thyroid."
Parade spoke exclusively with James J. Chao, M.D., FACS, Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of VedaNu Wellness to better understand what that phrase actually means in the trauma world—and whether such an injury would necessarily prevent someone from speaking. The answer may be more complicated than it first appears.
"Thyroid crushed almost always refers to the thyroid cartilage: the shield-like structure that surrounds the voice box. It does NOT refer to the thyroid gland located in front of it," Dr. Chao explains. "Blunt trauma to the front of the neck will fracture the thyroid cartilage—falling against a window sill/ledge, steering wheel, sometimes during an attempted strangulation."
Chao adds that a person's speech is "often preserved" despite suffering a crushed thyroid, but says the voice can become "hoarse, breathy, or weak."
"Swelling is the danger with any disrupted cartilage as the airway can close, part of the reason we tend to intubate these patients early," he continues.
Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, has admitted to killing her three young children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, inside her home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023. Her defense claims that she is not criminally responsible for killing her children due to postpartum psychosis and overmedication.
She strangled the children in the basement, before slitting her wrists and her throat and jumping out of her bedroom window in an apparent suicide attempt. She suffered serious injuries that left her paralyzed from the waist down.
According to the prosecution, all of this happened while Clancy's then-husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands. Upon arriving home, he found Lindsay in the backyard and testified that she told him that the children were in the basement. Many of the emergency personnel who arrived on scene noted that Lindsay was in and out of consciousness.

Erin Murphy sent a birthday message to her son—with a little help from her famous friends. The actress, best known for playing Tabitha Stephens on the 1960s sitcomBewitched, posted to Instagram on Aug. 11 to wish her son Parker Dunckel a happy birthday.
Murphy, 62, was seated in a restaurant in the video clip alongside a group of celebrity friends that included Charlene Tilton (Dallas) and Butch Patrick (The Munsters).
In the video, the Bewitched star addressed her son directly, apologizing for being out of town on his special day.
“I love you so much, I’m so sorry I can’t be there today, but I’m here and I’m doing that TV show I told you about where we’re driving cars across America," Murphy said. "So I’m here with a bunch of my friends, and they all want to say happy birthday, Parker.”
The camera then panned to the table as Murphy’s celebrity pals waved and wished her son a happy birthday.
Murphy also shared the clip to Facebook where she wrote, “Today is my son Parker's birthday. It was tough to be away from him while filming on the road. Please join me in wishing him a happy birthday. “

Murphy previously told fans that Parker changed her life “and so many others in profound ways.”
Murphy is currently on the road filming the upcoming CW series The Great American Road Rally—Celebrity Edition.
She shared details about the new show in an Instagram post, writing, “I’ll be traveling cross-country celebrating the 100th anniversary of Route 66, filming a TV show for the CW Network & raising money for charity. Different celebrity passengers joining each leg of the rally.”
In addition to Murphy, Tilton and Patrick, the series will feature classic TV stars John Schneider, Erik Estrada, John O’Hurley, Ian Ziering and more.
Murphy previously teased the project on Instagram in June, telling fans, “A new adventure begins this fall! I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be on a brand-new TV show, and this journey is unlike anything I’ve done before.”

90-Year-Old Music Legend Releases Unexpected New Single Inspired by KISS
Engelbert Humperdinck is showing fans a side of himself they may not have seen before.
The legendary singer, best known for his romantic hits and signature vocals, is stepping into unexpected territory with his new single, "Beth," a fresh interpretation of the classic KISS song. The track arrives today, Aug. 12, ahead of Humperdinck's highly anticipated new album, Faithfully, which will be released Aug. 28 via Cleopatra Records.
"Beth" was originally released by KISS in 1976 as part of their album Destroyer, and it became an unlikely hit for the hard-rock band. The single reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving KISS its first U.S. Top 10 hit.
The song was co-written by Peter Criss, Stan Penridge and producer Bob Ezrin, with Criss providing the lead vocals. Its softer sound was a striking departure from KISS' heavier material, which makes Humperdinck's decision to record it particularly fitting despite the surprising connection.
Fans are already reacting to the track in the comments section of the official music video which was posted on YouTube by Cleopatra Records.
"Great rendition of this song. One word- beautiful," one person wrote.
"Nice song and vocals," someone else said.

Humperdinck, 90, will be holding a meet and greet at Barnes & Noble at The Grove in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 11am local time, where he will chat with fans and celebrate the release of Faithfully.

To have the praise of the one and onlyJimmy Pagespeaks volumes about a guitarist's work. One would think a soft-rock classic with sultry lyrics and dulcet tones wouldn't feature that kind of guitar solo, but one would be very wrong.
Maria Muldaur's 1973 hit "Midnight at the Oasis" isn't just a Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 tune (peaking at No. 6 to be exact); it features the unforgettable work of Amos Garrett, an underrated guitarist who helped shape the sounds of pop, blues, and classic rock.
The Story Behind "Midnight at the Oasis"The song's history begins with its writer, David Nichtern, and his more, erm, intimate activities.
"I wrote the song before I started working with Maria... the details are a little bit intimate, but let's just say there was a girl, a waterbed, feta cheese and grape leaves, and a Martin 000-18 nearby," said Nichtern, according to Songfacts.
After helping Muldaur land her deal with Warner Bros. with a different track, Nichtern was already on the producer's radar. He flew out to L.A. and played "Midnight at the Oasis" for Lenny Waronker; he liked it so much, he wanted to include it on the record. Nichtern recalled playing rhythm guitar on the track but gave most praise to Garrett.
"We recorded it with some great musicians—Jim Gordon on drums (who later went crazy and killed his own mother and went to prison for life I think)," he recalled to the outlet. "Freebo played bass, Mark Jordan on piano and me on acoustic guitar. Later, Famous Amos Garrett added that amazing electric guitar part and solo, which in some circles is as famous as the song itself."
Garrett spent the rest of his career making several strides as a studio artist working with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Anne Murray, Todd Rundgren, and Bonnie Raitt. Garrett is also hailed for his work on Paul Butterfield'sBetter Days recording of "Please Send Me Someone to Love." He also released several solo albums, and he fronted his Canadian band Eh! Team.
What made the solo so memorable was Garrett's unique playing style. Called a "multiple note bend," his signature sound ended up influencing some of the greatest guitarists alive—including Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page.
“On a totally different style—the control, the guy who played on the Maria Muldaur single, ‘Midnight at the Oasis’. Amos Garrett,” Page once praised, according to Far Out Magazine. “He’s Les Paul-oriented and Les Paul is the one, really. We wouldn’t be anywhere if he hadn’t invented the electric guitar.”
Jimmy Fallon Mocks Trump’s Catering-Truck Hideout With a Kid-on-a-Road-Trip Gag
Jimmy Fallon kicked off Tuesday’s Tonight Show by squeezing into a catering box, turning reports of Donald Trump’s alleged airport hideout into a joke about the president’s latest escape plan.
Fallon opened his monologue by riffing on reports that Trump hid in the back of an airport catering truck after leaving a summit in Turkey amid security concerns. He portrayed Trump like a kid on a road trip, asking to be left alone until the danger passed, before piling on with jokes about Air Force One, Marco Rubio and Taylor Farms.
After climbing out of the catering box onstage, Fallon said, “I'm not sure if you've heard, but it's being reported that, last month, when President Trump left a summit in Turkey, he was facing security threats from Iran. So, he boarded Air Force One, then snuck off the plane and hid in the back of an airport catering truck.”
“With everything going on in the world, Trump was like, ‘Just leave me in here, okay? Just leave me in. Let me know when the war is over.’”
Fallon then added, “Today, everyone was like, ‘Well, at least he has one exit plan.’”
He followed that up with another jab at the administration: “Trump hid in a catering truck while Marco Rubio hid in Trump’s carry-on bag.”
The jokes continued as Fallon played off footage of Trump appearing to fall asleep during meetings and his well-documented appetite. “Everyone knew Trump was off the plane because it wasn't flying at its normal 45-degree angle,” he joked.
Fallon’s team then launched into a fake audio bit imagining what it was like to have Trump inside the catering box, with the president communicating with Secret Service agents and repeatedly asking, “Are we there yet?” and “Can I eat all these airplane meals?”
Trump’s Truth Social also took a hit when Fallon joked about the platform’s reportedly declining traffic. “I'm not saying it's bad, but right now, there's more traffic at a Taylor Farms salad bar,” Fallon joked, referencing the recent food safety controversy surrounding the company.
Taylor Farms is facing food safety concerns tied to separate recalls involving Cyclospora-contaminated iceberg lettuce and Salmonella risks in prepared foods containing jalapeño peppers. The recalls have affected products sold by major retailers and restaurant chains, including Walmart and Taco Bell, prompting increased scrutiny of the company’s supply chain.
You Can Soon Experience Australia’s Wild Side Without Leaving Sydney’s City Limits
You don't necessarily have to venture deep into the Australian bush to experience the country's wild side. Soon, travelers visiting Sydney will have another sprawling natural escape to add to their itinerary—and it'll conveniently sit in Western Sydney.
The New South Wales (NSW) government recently announced the creation of Gulguer National Park, a new 1,100-hectare national park west of Bringelly. The park is bringing together the existing Gulguer Nature Reserve and Bents Basin State Conservation Area with around 700 hectares of additional land, providing a huge new protected area for both people and wildlife. That includes at least 28 threatened species—including owls, burrowing frogs, and eastern coastal free-tailed bats—that call the area home.

Western Sydney is home to roughly half of Sydney's population, according to the Australian government, and the region is undergoing a major transformation that includes the opening of Western Sydney International Airport later this year.
Once established, Gulguer National Park will offer a new place for walking, mountain biking, wildlife watching, and other outdoor activities.
The landscape is also significant beyond its natural beauty. The area is traditional Country for the Gundungurra, Dharawal, and Darug peoples, and Bents Basin and the adjoining Gulguer Nature Reserve already protect Aboriginal rock art and artifacts. The name Gulguer itself refers to the area's whirlpool or spinning waters and is connected to Aboriginal stories about the site.
For travelers, that combination is part of the appeal. Sydney is already famous for its beaches, harbor, restaurants, and urban attractions, but its proximity to wild landscapes is one of its biggest advantages. You can spend the morning exploring the city, the afternoon hiking through eucalyptus-filled bushland, and the evening back among Sydney's restaurants and nightlife—without turning your vacation into a remote road trip.
Earlier this year, Hornsby Park, a 60-hectare bushland reserve created from a former quarry, opened just 10 minutes from Hornsby train station. The park features bush trails, blue gum trees, birdlife, and a dramatic viewing platform overlooking a quarry lake.
The NSW government announced the new park in late July 2026. It is expected to open within the next six months as establishment work is completed.
Rising Rock Star, Frontman of Rival Sons, Announces First Solo Tour in the U.S.
Jay Buchanan, lead vocalist of the popular 2010s rock band Rival Sons, announced some exciting news on Tuesday.
The singer revealed that he will be embarking on his Storyteller Tour, his first United States solo tour this upcoming fall, opening the string of shows in Houston on Sept. 11 and closing the tour on Oct. 18 in Phoenix. In between, Buchanan is expected to perform in various cities including Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, San Diego and more.
The news comes after his successful Weapons of Beauty Tour he went on around Europe last month, which was a string of intimate acoustic shows that sold out.
"This whole thing has been unfolding very organically, let’s see what we can do here in the States," Buchanan wrote on Instagram. "I’ll be running lean and mean out to see my country and telling some stories. See you soon America! 🇺🇸 🏜️"

Best known as the vocalist for Rival Sons, Buchanan was already a strong singer-songwriter before joining in 2009. He was already writing songs and performing in his own band called Buchanan throughout the 2000s.
In 2008, Scott Holiday discovered the young singer through MySpace while searching for a new vocalist. Musicians Holiday, Michael Miley and Robin Everhart were already playing in a band together, and when Buchanan joined, they renamed themselves the Rival Sons. Since joining 17 years ago, Rival Sons has released eight studio albums together, with their most recent projects being Darkfighter and Lightbringer in 2023.
It wasn't until this year that Buchanan set out time to create his own solo record.
"Everyone’s been on me to make a solo record ever since Rival Sons has been a band,” Buchanan told Louder in March. “Even when we got together, the intention was going to be us doing that, and me also making these solo records. But being in a rock’n’roll band, it’ll take up your time and energy.”
