When Dick Clark Hosted the ACMs, Country Looked Very Different
Long before the genre became a global powerhouse filled with stadium tours and crossover superstars, the Academy of Country Music Awards highlighted a mix of rising talents and established names who were shaping the sound of country in the late 1960s.
On April 28, 1969, the ACM Awards looked a little different than it does today. Held at the Hollywood Palladium and hosted by television icon Dick Clark, the ceremony offered a snapshot of country music at a fascinating moment in its evolution.
Among the night’s biggest winners was Glen Campbell, who took home Top Male Vocalist of the Year. At the time, Campbell was in the midst of a major breakout, thanks to hits that blurred the lines between country and pop, helping expand the genre’s reach to a wider audience.
Top Female Vocalist honors went to Cathie Taylor, while Tom Smothers (best known as one half of the Smothers Brothers) was named Man of the Year, reflecting the era’s broader definition of country influence and entertainment.
The husband-and-wife duo Johnny Mosby and Jonie Mosby earned Top Vocal Group, highlighting the continued popularity of harmony-driven acts at the time.
Meanwhile, rising stars were also recognized, with Cheryl Poole named Most Promising Female Vocalist and Ray Sanders taking home the male counterpart.
Looking back, the 1969 ceremony feels like a time capsule, capturing a moment when country music was still defining its future. Some names would go on to lasting fame, while others faded from the spotlight, making the night all the more intriguing in hindsight.
Decades later, as the ACM Awards continue to celebrate the biggest stars in country music, this early ceremony remains a reminder of how much the genre and its definition of stardom has evolved.

2018 Pulitzer Prize-Winning Novel Ranked One of the ‘Best Audiobooks to Curl Up With’
A sweeping tale that ties together wildly different characters through their complicated relationships with trees, and in the process explores humanity’s role in both the destruction and preservation of the natural world, The Overstory by Richard Powers has proven to have longevity past its 2018 publication.
The novel, which won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the 2020 William Dean Howells Medal, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2018 and has evidently stayed on the minds of the literary community, as it was listed among other heavy hitters on “the best Booker audiobooks to curl up with this winter, chosen by you” on the awards’ website.

“Nine strangers are each summoned in different ways by the natural world to save it from catastrophe, in a radical and remarkable novel shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2018,” the listing says about the powerful novel.
The Overstory spans generations and tells the stories of how trees influence the world around them, from a family that photographs a chestnut tree on their farm monthly until tragedy strikes, to environmental activists who seek to save redwoods from deforestation, setting off a chain of events that have far-reaching consequences decades later.

The Washington Post called it an “ambitious novel” that “soars up through the canopy of American literature and remakes the landscape of environmental fiction,” while over 201,000 ratings on Goodreads gave it an average 4.11 out of 5 stars.
It was also nominated for the Readers’ Favorite Fiction Award in 2018 on the bibliophile social media site and received a Goodreads Choice Award. Reviewers there said it is “undeniably brilliant, but it's also hard work,” with more noting that “It's a book that really rewards a second reading.”

1992 Hit Ranked Among ‘Greatest Power Ballads’ of All Time — An Unexpected Turn for an Iconic Band
In 1992, Metallica had an unexpected top 40 hit with the song “Nothing Else Matters.” The emotional ballad, which appeared on the heavy metal band's self-titled 1992 album, peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 2, 1992. With an acoustic guitar intro and heartfelt lyrics penned by James Hetfield, “Nothing Like Matters” was unlike anything Metallica had released before.
Ultimate Classic Rock ranked “Nothing Else Matters” as one of the greatest power ballads in rock history. The outlet noted that while the softer song was “polarizing” to some fans, others praised the hard rockers for “stretching their range."
“Regardless of your opinion, there’s no doubt ‘Nothing Else Matters’ was a success, ranking among Metallica’s most popular singles,” UCR concluded.
Hetfield didn’t want to share the song—at first
Hetfield has admitted he had mixed feelings about “Nothing Else Matters.” In 2008, he told MOJO, "At first I didn't even want to play it for the guys.”
Hetfield had written the song about missing his then-girlfriend Kristen Martinez while he was on the road. Guitarist Kirk Hammett was initially surprised by Hetfield’s sensitive lyrics.
“All I could think of at the time was, ‘James wrote a f---ing love song to his girlfriend? That’s just weird,’” Hammett admitted to Classic Rock magazine. “James always wanted to be perceived as this guy who is very confident and strong. And for him to write lyrics like that — showing a sensitive side…”
Hetfield agreed that the song was very off brand. “What was it about not wanting to write a love song?” he said. “That’s pretty easy. It’s a huge sign of weakness. You’re in Metallica. This is hardcore. What the f--- are you doing?”
“But that song was for me,” the rock legend further explained. “It’s about being on the road, missing someone at home. But it was written in such a way that it connected with so many people. It wasn’t just about two people. It was about a connection with your higher power, lots of different things.”

Hetfield was ‘grateful’ for the songBandmate Lars Ulrich helped compose the music to go with Hetfield's lyrics, and the two produced the song along with record producer Bob Rock, per Rhino. More than 30 years after its release, “Nothing Else Matters” remains a live concert staple and one of Metallica’s signature songs.
Hetfield noted that many people can relate to the song he wrote for himself in a hotel room when he was “bumming out about being away from home.”
"It's absolutely crazy, that was the song that I thought was least Metallica, least likely to ever played by us, the last song anyone would really want to hear,” he once told The Village Voice of "Nothing Else Matters.” “It's quite amazing, it's a true testament to honesty and exposing yourself, putting your real self out there, and taking the risk, taking a gamble that someone's either going to step on your heart with spikes on or they're going to put their heart right next to it, and you never know until you try."
“I'm grateful that the guys forced me to take it out of my tape player and make it Metallica,” the rocker added.

This Pop Classic and Heartbreak Anthem Is Named Spotify's 'Greatest Pop Song of the Streaming Era'
Spotify released a ranking of the 100 Greatest Pop Songs of the Streaming Era, and the No. 1 track might surprise you.
Beating out other dominant streaming forces likeTaylor Swift, Billie Eilish,The Weeknd and more, Spotify's top pop song of the streaming era was revealed as Olivia Rodrigo's 2021 breakout hit "driver's license."
The song has over 2.7 billion streams on Spotify, but interestingly, it didn't make the Top 20 on the platform's recently-released list of the Most-Streamed Songs of All Time (ranked exclusively by streaming numbers).
"Driver's license" was instead selected as the Greatest Pop Song of the Streaming Era based on a different set of qualifications. According to the streamer, the songs were selected by Spotify editors based on "qualitative criteria including cultural impact, musicality, artist storytelling" and more. The website notes that a "high stream count was not required to make the list," though Rodrigo's hit was clearly still a massive streaming successes. ("Driver's license" even broke Spotify's record for the most streams in a single day for a non-holiday song at the time of its release.)
According to Spotify's new ranking of "pop classics," Rodrigo's emotional ballad earned the top spot over its "timeless themes—heartbreak, melodrama, and coming of age—anchored by the parallel milestones of getting your driver’s license and losing your first love."
"It nods to late-2010s whisper-pop while layering in unexpected lyrical specificity, with lines like 'guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me' becoming instant classics," the website states.
Co-written by Rodrigo and Daniel Nigro, "driver's license" was released it as the lead single off her debut album, SOUR, and spent a total of 8 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100. It also earned Rodrigo a Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2022 ceremony, plus nominations for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
Forget the Kid-Only Zones—Norwegian’s Massive New Waterpark Is for the ‘Kidult’ in All of Us
It looks like Norwegian Cruise Line is ready to turn the volume up on your next Bahamas escape. This morning, the cruise line dropped a fresh Instagram teaser for the biggest addition to its private island, Great Stirrup Cay, and the "kidult" crowd is already losing it in the comments.
If you’ve been following the updates, you know NCL has been quietly turning its private oasis into the ultimate "Escape to the Great Life." But the new crown jewel—the Great Tides Waterpark—officially has a debut window for later this summer, and it’s shaping up to be a total game-changer for anyone who thinks they’re "too old" for a waterslide.

View this post on Instagram The ‘Great Tides’ TakeoverThe summer 2026 debut of Great Tides Waterpark isn’t just a few slides and a bucket of water. NCL is going big with 19 unique waterslides and a nearly 800-foot dynamic river (think: a "not-so-lazy" lazy river for those who want a little more zip).
But the real "wow" moment for thrill-seekers? NCL is introducing the cruise industry’s first cliffside jumps. It’s exactly the kind of high-adrenaline "bucket list" moment that makes you forget you’re on a family vacation and lets you tap into your inner kid again. For the actual kids, there's a massive 9,000-square-foot splash zone, so everyone has their own corner of paradise.

Poolside Perks and ‘Island-Wide’ EaseIf you aren't one for the slides, the newly unveiled Great Life Lagoon is where you’ll likely spend your afternoon. This 1.4-acre heated pool area features two swim-up bars, so you never have to choose between a dip and a daiquiri.
NCL has also tackled the "mental load" of a beach day by adding an island-wide tram system, a new Welcome Center and plenty of private cabanas for when you need a break from the sun. It’s all part of a larger plan to make Great Stirrup Cay feel less like a quick stop and more like a high-end destination—a sentiment echoed by fans on social media who are already begging for two-day stays on the island.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Who Surprisingly Only Published Two Novels Would Have Turned 100 Today
When it comes to iconic authors, there are a few who come to mind. One is a Pulitzer Prize winner who only published two novels, and they were published decades apart. Harper Lee would have turned 100 today, April 28, and while she’s not with us anymore, it doesn’t mean we don’t want to mark the occasion.
Lee’s first and biggest novel was To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960. Just a year later, it would win a Pulitzer Prize, and from that point, Lee didn’t see to write anything else. It would take decades for another novel to be published.
Harper Lee Wasn’t Afraid to Deal with Difficult TopicsConsidering the time period, Lee wasn’t afraid to ruffle some feathers, and it arguably led to one of the most iconic books of all time. To Kill a Mockingbird has certainly gained some negative reviews over time, but the story is an important one, touching on the topic of race and racial inequality.
As the daughter of a lawyer, Lee had some slightly more personal experience in writing Atticus Finch, including how her father defended two Black men accused of murder. Much of the story includes elements of Lee’s own life told from Scout’s point of view.
Despite the mixed reviews, To Kill a Mockingbird was adapted into a movie in 1962. It has also since been developed into a stage production.
The Publication of ‘Go Set a Watchman’Despite the success of the first novel, Lee wouldn’t see another novel published until 2015, when Go Set a Watchman was finally released. There are debates over whether this was an earlier draft of To Kill a Mockingbird or a lost novel, but whatever it was, it would become the second and last novel published while Lee still lived. She died a year after the publication.
However, there has been a release posthumously. In 2025, The Land of Sweet Forever: Stories and Essays was published. It included eight short stories that Lee wrote before her most popular novel, that is now considered one of the books everyone should read before they die. Like her original novel, the short stories cover topics such as equality and politics.
Despite only having two novels, Lee will always be remembered as one of the greatest authors of all time, and it only seems appropriate to mark what would have been her 100th birthday.

Why Your Zip Code Could Actually Be Your Most Expensive Skincare Step
You’ve got the 12-step routine down to a science. But it turns out your face might just hate where you live. A new study about 48 states just dropped, ranking them by how much the local environment is trying to wreck their inhabitants skin. They looked at the data that matters to skin: UV levels, air quality, humidity, and even how much wind whips across your cheeks.
If you want the skin of a literal angel, move to Delaware.
The state snagged the #1 spot because the weather stays in its lane. The climate is balanced, the UV exposure won't bake you like a potato, and the air isn't a soup of pollutants. Vermont and West Virginia followed close behind. These states win because they aren't urban nightmares. They have low UV levels and enough trees to keep the air clean.
Washington (#4) took the crown for the cleanest air in the country. Meanwhile, New Hampshire (#5) has liquid gold coming out of the taps, ranking highest for water quality. If you’ve ever noticed your skin feels like sandpaper after a shower in a different city, now you know why.
The top ten is a mix of cooler, calmer spots where your skin barrier isn't constantly under siege:
- Delaware
- Vermont
- West Virginia
- Washington
- New Hampshire
- Oregon
- Maine
- New York
- Montana
- Iowa
Oregon and Maine are great because the sun isn't a constant threat. Montana and Iowa might be sleepers, but they offer that sweet spot of decent air and humidity that doesn't leave you feeling like a swamp monster.
Jessica Maxcy from Eight Saints Skincare says most of us are doing summer all wrong. We buy the hype, but forget the heat. “One of the biggest mistakes people make heading into summer is focusing only on products and ignoring their environment. Sun exposure, humidity, and air quality all play a huge role in how your skin behaves day to day.”
Maxcy believes you can't out-moisturize a desert or out-wash a smoggy city if you aren't playing defense correctly: “A lot of people don’t realize that higher UV levels don’t just cause sunburn, they speed up aging and can weaken your skin barrier over time. That’s why consistent SPF use is non-negotiable, even on cloudy days.”
If you're in Arizona (#48) or Florida (#47), the news is grim. Arizona is like a UV furnace with zero humidity. Florida is a humid, sunny pressure cooker. Maxcy warns against the urge to scrub your face into oblivion when the sweat starts: “In summer, people tend to over-cleanse or use harsh products because their skin feels oily, but that can actually make things worse. Stripping the skin too much leads to more oil production and irritation.”
“If you’re living in an area with high pollution or poor air quality, cleansing properly at the end of the day becomes even more important,” says Maxcy. “That buildup can clog pores and lead to breakouts if it’s not removed. Simple habits matter more than people think. Wearing SPF daily, avoiding over-exfoliation, and adjusting your routine based on your climate can make a bigger difference than constantly switching products.”
Your skin is a living shield. And depending on where you parked your car, that shield is either resting in Delaware or fighting for its life in Phoenix. Check the full list. See where you land. Then maybe buy a bigger hat.
What Harrison Ford Said About This '80s Icon Made Steven Spielberg Lose It
Harrison Ford has never been one to sugarcoat his opinions; that’s common knowledge. But, one particular comment he made in 1982 left Steven Spielberg absolutely fuming — and it involved the most beloved alien in cinema history.
The 80s icon in question wasn't a person. It was E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Spielberg's deeply personal film that became the highest-grossing movie of all time and dominated pop culture throughout the decade. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who’s never heard of E.T.
Ford had many reasons to feel connected to the project. His then-partner and eventual wife, Melissa Mathison, wrote the script. Ford was even instrumental in convincing her to accept the job when she was originally hesitant. Surprise, he even appeared in the film as Elliott's school principal.
@for.the.love.of.moviezHarrison Ford was originally in E.T. #ettheextraterrestial #movietrivia #trivia #ilovemovies #behindthescenes
♬ Suspense, horror, piano and music box - takayaExcept audiences never saw him. Spielberg cut Ford's cameo because he decided that his fame would be distracting to the movie. If Ford had stayed in the final cut, he would've become the first actor to star in two separate movies that became the highest-grossing releases of all time — Star Wars and E.T.
Around the time of E.T.'s theatrical release, someone asked Ford his personal thoughts on the wrinkled visitor from another planet. His response was characteristically Ford blunt.
"Two weekends ago, I called him an ugly little f---," Ford divulged. "And Steven went apeshit!"
Spielberg was understandably upset, considering E.T. is still his most personal picture and the one he's always cherished most. But Ford has never been one to do anything other than shoot from the hip, even when it means insulting his friend's beloved creation.
Harrison Ford's Unfiltered Honesty Has Kept Him Working for 40+ Years - Here's WhyThat same unfiltered, brutal honesty that made Spielberg so upset in 1982 is exactly what's kept Ford working consistently for over four decades. At 83, the man’s still accepting challenging roles.
"Without my work, I really wouldn't know what to do with myself," Ford recently told NPR. "I really do love the work. It constantly changes, and the people change, and the mission and the opportunity change, and it just makes for an interesting way to live your life."
Ford's genuine authenticity has defined his whole career. He famously ad-libbed Han Solo's "I know" response to Princess Leia's "I love you" in The Empire Strikes Back, insisting it was more in character than the scripted "I love you too."He wasn’t wrong. Of course, George Lucas wasn't initially thrilled, but the line got a huge laugh at the San Francisco preview and became iconic. The rest is history.
Recently, Ford teared up while accepting a lifetime achievement award. His reaction? "I feel slightly embarrassed by it, because I have enough experience with these things to want to be able to manage not to be overcome."
See, even his emotions are unfiltered. Calling E.T. an ugly little f--- was just Ford being Ford — honest to a fault, uninterested in managing perceptions, and committed to saying exactly what’s on his mind.
Spielberg has long since forgiven him. They went on to make the Indiana Jones films together.
And Ford's authenticity — 10/10 would recommend.
Quote of the Day: Psychoanalyst Erik Erikson on Building Community and Connection With Others
Best known for his theory on psychosocial development in humans, Erik Erikson was a German-American child psychoanalyst and visual artist. And if you’ve ever heard or used the term “identity crisis,” you can thank Erikson for that, too, since he coined it. Born in 1902, he’s considered one of the most influential psychoanalysts of the 20th century and wrote about social psychology, identity and how psychology intersected with history, culture and more, per Britannica. And our quote of the dayincludes Erikson’s thoughts about how humans need each other, and it’s not a weakness to lean on others; in fact, it’s natural.
Erikson wasn’t told who his biological father was until later on in his childhood, thinking his stepfather was his only father until then. So his focus on identity later on in his professional work makes sense, given his confusion about identity growing up and the issues he had to deal with, per Encyclopedia.com.
As mentioned above, he’s most well-known for his theory on the stages of psychosocial development, where he suggests there are eight stages of development, each of which is defined by a “core conflict” that then impacts and molds your personality and identity, according to VeryWellMind. You can either develop healthily if you resolve those conflicts, or live with unresolved conflicts that can hinder further development.
In his time as a researcher, professor and psychoanalyst, he wrote several books, including works that examined real-life figures such as Martin Luther and Gandhi. He died in 1994 at the age of 91, and today’s quote looks at what he thought about interdependence and that we’re better off for accepting the fact that we need the help of others in life.

Quote of the Day by Erik EriksonCanvaPro/Parade
"Life doesn't make any sense without interdependence. We need each other, and the sooner we learn that, the better for us all."
This quote is a good example of Erikson’s work and what he ultimately believed based on his research. As Simply Psychology reported, Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development have to do with how our lives and sense of self are shaped by our social relationships. These relationships can include family, friends, authority figures, romantic partners and more. And how we are treated or perceived by others—and later on, how we act within those structures, too—can impact whether we resolve those core conflicts and develop strengths or “virtues,” or if they remain unresolved and we go onto a future stage with negative repercussions.
Since Erikson’s main points had to do with how humans develop based on their social experiences, it makes sense that he would believe that humans—who are inherently social creatures—need others to grow.

Deeper Meaning of Erik Erikson’s Quote—Interdependence and Accepting You Need OthersOf course, as a baby, you absolutely need others to survive. But just because you survived past that stage, it doesn’t necessarily mean you gained the virtue of trust, the first strength you can gain from your first stage in life. Unfortunately, if life was difficult for you or you only received the bare minimum basic needs, you might have a hard time with trust. Whether we had a healthy growth from that stage depends on others.
Again, the whole point of Erikson’s work has to do with the fact that our relationship and interaction with others impact us at each and every stage of life, and we’re constantly growing, even into the last stage of “old age” (65 years old and up).
So even when we don’t “depend” on others for our livelihood in later stages of life, the concept of Erikson’s psychosocial stages suggests that we need to experience these core conflicts and stages involving others to evolve. The strengths or virtues that humans are meant to gain from each stage include trust, autonomy, identity, intimacy and more, and you can’t really develop those things without others, hence the quote.
For Erikson to say that “life doesn’t make any sense without interdependence,” he isn’t advocating for codependence. But rather, he means that we live in connection to others, and we’re meant to. Life isn’t about barely surviving your way through hardships—or even just daily tasks—without anyone by your side or who you can turn to. It’s not a flex to deny help or say that you can do things all by yourself and you don’t need anybody. Hyperindependence can be a trauma response or just a toxic trait. But either way, it’s nothing to aspire to.
Erikson's words have a truth to them when he says, “We need each other.” He’s right, and we’re better off for it once we get it through our individualistic, hustle-culture-pilled heads.

Iconic ’70s Rock Band Announces Exciting News After Funding Issues
Veteran heavy metal band Raven has confirmed exciting news for fans: a brand-new, full-length documentary is officially in the works.
The announcement comes after the group faced funding problems with their earlier film project, signaling a fresh start backed by stronger resources and a more experienced team.
In a recent interview, guitarist Mark Gallagher shared that the band has already begun early production.
“We pretty much worked out the details and we're starting work on it. There's gonna be a RAVEN documentary, like a full documentary,” he said. This new project aims to tell the band’s long and complex story more clearly and completely.

The upcoming documentary follows their 2013 release, Rock Until You Drop – A Long Day’s Journey, which captured nearly four decades of the band’s career. However, that earlier effort faced challenges due to limited funding.
“The last one was difficult, because it wasn't funded right… it was such a learning curve for me,” Gallagher admitted. This time, he emphasized that “we have really professional people involved,” raising hopes for a higher-quality production.
The new documentary is expected to dive deep into Raven’s journey, from their beginnings in the 1970s to their influence on heavy music. The band is widely known for helping shape early thrash metal and inspiring acts like Metallica and Anthrax.
Gallagher highlighted the emotional side of telling their story, noting that many key figures from their early years are no longer around.
“A lot of the people who were involved in the beginning of this are gone,” he said, mentioning important contributors like Megaforce Records founder Jon Zazula.
Frontman John Gallagher added, “Even just our contemporaries, a lot of them are gone.” The documentary will likely reflect on these losses while celebrating the band’s survival and legacy.
Despite these challenges, Raven remains active and energized. Mark Gallagher shared that their current North American tour has been a huge success, calling the shows “off the chain” in terms of excitement and fan response.
The announcement also comes after a difficult period for the band. In 2025, Raven had to postpone a major European tour when John Gallagher underwent emergency brain surgery due to a serious condition. The health scare forced the group to take what John later described as a “medical gap year.”
Meanwhile, Mark Gallagher also faced his own struggles, undergoing ankle and knee surgeries after years of performing through pain. These real-life challenges are expected to play a key role in the upcoming documentary, giving fans a closer look at the band’s resilience.
Beyond the documentary, Raven is also preparing new music. According to John, the band has already written enough material for their next album and plans to begin recording in mid-2026.
“The stuff we've got… more intense, more melodic, more heavy, more crazy,” he said, teasing the sound of the upcoming release.
The band is also planning a major tour in 2027 to support the album.
“It's looking really good so far. And I'm just excited to kick it all into gear,” John added.Raven’s recent EP, Can't Take Away The Fire, released in 2025, already hinted at this next chapter. Combined with the documentary and touring plans, the band appears to be entering a new and active phase of their career.

1953 Hit Film, Originally Censored in the United States, Ranked Among ‘Best Movie of All Time’
A gripping 1953 thriller that once faced heavy censorship in the United States is now being celebrated as one of the greatest films in cinema history.
The Wages of Fear has climbed into the top tier of movie rankings, recently placing No. 40 on Rotten Tomatoes’ “300 Best Movies of All Time” list, backed by a perfect 100% critics score and a strong 94% audience rating.
The film, directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot, tells a tense and dangerous story set in a remote South American jungle, where four desperate men risk their lives transporting highly explosive nitroglycerin.
Today, it is praised not only for its suspense but also for its lasting influence on modern thrillers.

Originally released in 1953, The Wages of Fear follows four European men stuck in a struggling town with no way out. Their only chance at a better life comes when an American oil company offers them $2,000 each to deliver nitroglycerin across rough, deadly roads to stop a raging oil fire.
The job is almost suicidal. Every bump in the road could trigger an explosion.
The film’s suspense builds slowly at first, introducing each man and the harsh conditions they face. But once the journey begins, the tension becomes relentless. Each moment feels dangerous, as the drivers carefully navigate broken roads, unstable bridges and unexpected obstacles.
Despite its success in Europe, the film had a troubled release in the United States. When it arrived in 1955, nearly 50 minutes were cut. Some reports say the edits were made because the film was too long, while others believe it was due to its critical portrayal of American oil companies.
These removed scenes changed how audiences first experienced the movie.
Film critic Roger Ebert later reflected on the restored version, saying, "The film's extended suspense sequences deserve a place among the great stretches of cinema."
With the original cut now widely available, viewers can finally see the film as it was meant to be, complete and uncompromised.
Over time, its reputation grew stronger. The film won both the Palme d’Or at Cannes and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1953, making it one of the rare films to achieve both honors. It also became a major box office success in France, drawing nearly seven million viewers.
At its core, The Wages of Fear is not just about danger; it is about survival, fear and human choices. The four men are not heroes. They are ordinary people pushed into extreme situations by poverty and desperation.

1958 Crime Thriller, Known as Film Saved by History, Ranked Among ‘Best Movies of All Time’
A 1958 crime thriller directed by Orson Welles, Touch of Evil, continues to stand strong among the “best movies of all time,” proving that even films once misunderstood can become legends.
The noir classic, starring Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh, has earned lasting praise from critics, audiences, and film historians, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 96% Tomatometer score and 92% Popcornmeter score from over 25,000 ratings.
Rotten Tomatoes also ranked the film 275th out of 300 best movies of all time, showing its strong place in cinema history even decades after its troubled release.
Touch of Evil tells a dark and tense story set on the U.S.–Mexico border. The film begins with a shocking car bomb explosion that kills two people. This event pulls Mexican narcotics agent Miguel Vargas (Charlton Heston) into an investigation led by American police captain Hank Quinlan (Orson Welles).

As Vargas works the case while on his honeymoon with his wife Susie (Janet Leigh), he starts to notice something deeply troubling. Quinlan and his partner Pete Menzies (Joseph Calleia), may be planting evidence to frame innocent people. The deeper Vargas digs, the more danger he and Susie face.
The story turns darker when Susie is kidnapped and falsely accused of murder. Vargas must race against time to expose corruption before more lives are destroyed. In the end, the truth is revealed, Quinlan’s crimes are uncovered, and Susie is freed.
The film is remembered for its intense mood, moral conflict and unforgettable performances. Welles plays Quinlan as a powerful but corrupt officer, adding depth to the story’s theme of justice versus abuse of power.
Even though Touch of Evil is now praised, its early history was chaotic. The film was originally adapted from the novel Badge of Evil (1956). Orson Welles was later hired not only to star but also to direct and rewrite the script.
However, during post-production, creative disagreements broke out between Welles and Universal executives. The studio re-edited the film in a more traditional style and even added reshoots in 1957 without Welles’ approval.
Welles responded by writing a detailed 58-page memo, explaining how the film should be restored to his vision.
Despite its rocky start and mixed early reviews, the film later gained major recognition in Europe and won top awards at the 1958 Brussels World Film Festival. Over time, critics began to reassess it, and by the 1970s, it was considered one of Welles’ greatest works.
In 1993, the Library of Congress selected Touch of Evil for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, calling it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
A major turning point came in 1998 when film editor Walter Murch rebuilt the movie based on Welles’ original memo. This restored version helped audiences better understand the director’s vision and is now widely respected.
Today, Touch of Evil is regularly shown in restored versions in film festivals, museums and universities. Modern 4K restorations and Blu-ray releases continue to introduce the film to younger audiences.
Though Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh have both passed away, their performances remain central to the film’s legacy. Heston died in 2008, while Leigh passed in 2004, but both are still remembered for shaping Hollywood history.
The film also helped cement Orson Welles’ reputation as one of cinema’s most creative directors, even during a difficult period in his career.
What was once a heavily edited studio release is now widely regarded as a masterpiece of film noir, and a powerful example of how a movie can be “saved by history.”

1965 Top 10 Pop Song Was Originally a Bob Dylan Deep Cut
The Turtles carved their place in the rock and roll history book with “Happy Together.” The psychedelic love song, featuring Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman’s dreamy harmonies, went to No. 1 in March of 1967, surpassing The Beatles’ “Penny Lane” for the top spot, where it stayed for three weeks. Afterwards, “Happy Together” became one of the biggest songs of the decade and beyond, appearing in movies and commercials to this very day.
And none of that would have been possible had Howard Kalyan not found a copy of Another Side of Bob Dylan in his record collection a few years earlier. Because the Turtles' first hit came when they decided to coverBob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe.”
Kaylan, Volman and Al Nichol first got their start in music shortly after high school with a surf rock group called The Crossfires. As folk rock and Beatlemania took over, the band shifted its sound, recruited Jim Tucker, Don Murray, and Chuck Portz, and rebranded as The Turtles.
“I was trying to figure out what songs to go into the studio with,” remarked Kaylan in Mark Volman’s 2023 memoir and oral history, Happy Together. Kaylan perused “all of the Bob Dylan and Kingston Trio records I had” in search of a song to cover, one that would “distinguish us as far as putting out a Byrds-sounding record that would be recognizable as a new band.”
“The only songs I’d written up to that point had been folk rock songs,” he adds, “but I was searching for something else, and I couldn’t put my finger on it until I listened to Dylan’s ‘It Ain’t Me Babe.’ And then, I knew exactly what it was that the band ought to do.”
Dylan didn’t release “It Ain’t Me Babe” as a single; Another Side of Bob Dylan was a divisive record of the day. For Dlyan, he heard pop gold in the deep cut. He rearranged the track so that it went from “very quiet minor verses to crashing 4/4 choruses,” which transformed the meaning of Dylan’s song from “a plaintive one to an angry one, by saying, ‘No! No! No! It ain’t me, babe!’ and singing it with that sort of venom.”
The Turtles released their version of “It Ain’t Me Babe” in the summer of 1965. It peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September. Having a Top 10 hit launched the band’s career, which they followed with “You Baby” and eventually, “Happy Together.”
Before the band broke up in 1970, The Turtles scored two more hits with “Elenore” and “You Showed Me.”

What did Dylan think of The Turtles turning his folk song into a Top 10 pop hit? Dylan referenced the group when accepting the MusiCares Person of the Year award in 2015.
“The Byrds, the Turtles, Sonny & Cher, they made some of my songs Top 10 hits, but I wasn't a pop songwriter, and I really didn't want to be that,” he said in his acceptance speech, “but it was good that it happened. Their versions of songs were like commercials, but I didn't really mind that because 50 years later, my songs were being used in the commercials. So that was good too. I was glad it happened, and I was glad they'd done it.”
In his 2013 memoir, Shell Shocked, Howard Kaylan shed some more light on the inscrutable Dylan’s thoughts on the matter. He recalls performing “a particularly energetic show” at New York City’s Phone Booth in 1965, which climaxed with “It Ain’t Me Babe.” Dylan happened to be in the audience for that night’s show, and the group was “led past him in processional fashion,” according to Howard.
“When I got my chance to shake his hand,” wrote Kaylan, “Dylan said, ‘Hey, that was a great song you just played. That should be your single.’ Then he passed out in his food.”
Later on in the memoir, Kaylan recounts running into Dylan backstage at the L.A. Sports Arena sometime in 1981. Kaylan approached Dylan and thanked him for “writing our first hit.”
“Was it any good?” asked Dylan, to which Kaylan said it was. “So, we both made money, then?” asked Bob. “Yessir,” said Howard, who said Dylan shook his hand and said, “Well, then, I thank you. Let’s do her again sometime.”
