Lovin' Spoonful guitarist Zal Yanovsky wanted drums that sounded "like garbage cans being thrown down a steel staircase."

The engineer used the stairwell. Roy Halee put a microphone on the eighth floor of the metal stairs at Columbia's studio, sent the snare out of the big theater speakers on the ground floor and recorded what bounced back. He used the same staircase again on Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water."

That is the snare on "Summer in the City," which started a three-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Aug. 13, 1966, 60 years ago today.

A Teenager Wrote the Chorus

The chorus was Mark Sebastian's. He wrote it before his older brother John Sebastian, the band's frontman, built a song around it. Their parents' apartment sat 15 stories up on Washington Square West, with a window facing the Empire State Building. "But when the summer came, it was horrific," Mark said in an oral history of the recording. "You'd pray that a breeze might blow from one window to another."

The middle section started as a jazzy piano figure Steve Boone had been playing around the studio for weeks. "I think the band was gettin' sick of hearing me play it," Boone said. John thought it sounded like George Gershwin's "An American in Paris," an orchestra imitating traffic.

The Sound of 48th Street

At a later session devoted to sound effects, a soundman from radio arrived with trunks of records. They picked a traffic jam taped on 48th Street, where the band bought its instruments at Manny's Music. The horns in the break open with a Volkswagen Beetle horn and end on a jackhammer.

Producer Erik Jacobsen killed the ending the band wanted, a loud bang off a kicked Fender Reverb, and spliced in a copy of the last verse and chorus. "That saved the record, really," he said.

The band had other hits, "Do You Believe in Magic,""Daydream" and "Nashville Cats" among them. "Summer in the City" was its only No. 1, and the chorus belonged to the kid brother. "I like to rub that in, as a younger brother," Mark said.

When Bob Dylan released “All Along the Watchtower” in December 1967, it was a stark, acoustic folk song that told the story of a joker and a thief. But less than a year later, Jimi Hendrix transformed the quiet composition into a searing electric rock classic that left Dylan stunned— and remains the best-known version decades later.

Written by Dylan for his album John Wesley Harding, the sparse original song was not released as a single. But Hendrix heard the album track and decided to put an electric spin on it. The result was a blistering psychedelic rock reimagining that made the guitar the star. Hendrix’s explosive playing on the 1968 track created an entirely new song, with the guitar wailing its own story until the very end.

In 1995, Dylan admitted that Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watchtower” changed the song for him forever.

"It overwhelmed me, really," Dylan told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in an interview. “He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day."

The guitar legend died in 1970 at age 27, and Dylan has played the song in his honor over the years.

“I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way," Dylan noted in the liner notes to his box set, Biograph, per Rolling Stone. "Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way."

Guitarist Dave Mason, who played on the cover track,  once revealed that Hendrix heard an early copy of Dylan’s John Wesley Harding album and was immediately mesmerized by “All Along the Watchtower.”

“It was a Saturday or Sunday and we were in London and we got together somewhere,” Mason told Guitar World in an interview. “We were invited over to this girl’s apartment. ...She had the first copy of John Wesley Harding, the new Bob Dylan album, and we had to hear it. So we put the album on, and Jimi heard ‘Watchtower,’  and wanted to go to the studio and cut it.”

When he was once told in an interview that his version of “All Along the Watchtower” turned listeners on to the song when Dylan’s didn’t, Hendrix simply replied, "Well, that's reflections lie the mirror.”

Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower” cover reached No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1968 and became the highest-charting song of his too-short career.

Nearly 60 years later, the late legend's reimagining of one of Dylan’s simplest works remains a powerful example of how a great performer can take another artist’s song and make it their own.

Mary Hopkins had just turned 18 when she caught the interest of Beatles member Paul McCartney, who produced her debut single, "Those Were the Days," and launched her into success on the charts.

"Those Were the Days" is not to be confused with the All in the Family theme song and had a much longer history before Hopkins' hit in 1968. The track was originally a Russian romance song by composer Boris Fomin titled "Dorogoi dlinnoyu", but it was credited to Gene Raskin for having written an English version of the lyrics. Its lyrics reminisce about the golden years of youth and a rosy future.

Georgian singer Tamara Tsereteli and Russian singer Alexander Vertinsky were reported to have recorded the earliest version of the track, while Raskin and his wife Francesca performed their version in the early 1960s and were reported to have copyrighted the English version illegally.

The husband-and-wife pair performed the track internationally and, according to SongFacts, performed every year at London's Blue Angel club as their closer. One day, McCartney heard the duo play the song and sent out to get a demo.

While many failed to record the track, it wasn't until the Beatles formed Apple Records that McCartney finally got a hit song. In the summer of 1968, Hopkins had just turned 18 when she appeared on the TV talent show Opportunity Knocks, hosted by veteran broadcaster and presenter Hughie Green.

According to the BBC, not only had Hopkins won, but she caught the interest of model and '60s icon Twiggy with her performance. She immediately contacted McCartney, who was looking for new talent for the record label, and signed Hopkins after an audition. "Those Were the Days" became the teen's first recording under Apple Records that became a hit.

"I thought it was very catchy, it had something, it was a good treatment of nostalgia," McCartney said, according to Viera Voice. "(Hopkin) picked it up very easily, as if she’d known it for years."

The track became an international sensation that landed at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It would also land at No.1 on Cash Box, the Easy Listening chart, and across Europe, Asia, and Australia. Interestingly, Hopkins was held out of the No.1 spot on the Hot 100 by the Beatles' "Hey Jude" track. That same year, singer Sandie Shaw also released her version of the track, but Hopkins held out at the chart-topper.

Popularity around the song also led it to be nominated for the "Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Performance, Female" at the 11th Annual Grammy Awards in March 1969. Following the success of "Those Were the Days," McCartney and Hopkins released her first LP, which landed at No. 3 on the album charts. Hopkins would later release her second successful single, "Goodbye," also produced by the Beatles musician, and land at No.13 on the charts.

However, as reported by SFGATE's Katie Dowd, that picturesque concrete platform sitting over the water wasn't originally built as a lunch spot—it is actually the surviving loading dock of one of Disneyland's earliest and most forgotten attractions.

From Unruly Speedboats to a Guided Lagoon Cruise

The story behind the dock dates back to opening day in 1955. As SFGATE notes, Tomorrowland originally debuted with the "Phantom Boats," an ambitious attraction where guests drove unguided motorized boats across the lagoon. The concept quickly proved chaotic—unruly drivers crashed, traffic jams formed, and engines constantly overheated, forcing Disney to station a cast member in every boat just to monitor guests.

The Phantom Boats closed after just one year, becoming one of the least successful rides in the park's history. But to make use of the empty water, Disneyland debuted a much tamer replacement in 1957: the Motor Boat Cruise. This time, Imagineers added an underwater guide track to keep the boats moving safely, leaving the dashboard steering wheel purely decorative.

To drum up excitement for the gentle ride, early newspaper ads promised "all the thrills and excitement of driving your own speedboat," while later promotion claimed guests could "pilot your own craft through swift moving, whitewater rapids". In reality, the boats simply glided peacefully along the track, giving parents a relaxing spot to sit back while little ones happily pretended to steer.

The Final Chapter and a Quiet Legacy

By 1991, Disneyland gave the classic cruise a temporary Disney Channel overlay, rebranding it as the Motor Boat Cruise "To Gummi Glen" featuring plywood cutouts of characters from Adventures of the Gummi Bears. The overlay failed to spark much fanfare, and in 1993, the Motor Boat Cruise quietly closed for good so staff could be reassigned to the newly opened Mickey’s Toontown.

While the boats disappeared, the original loading dock remained. According to SFGATE, guests loaded into boats on one side of the platform and unloaded on the other—a heritage that is still visible today in the decorative life preservers mounted on the seating area's support pillars.

After sitting vacant for years and briefly serving as a designated smoking area in the 2000s, the dock was eventually reimagined into the shaded seating terrace for Edelweiss Snacks. The next time you sit by the water with a snack, look down at the lagoon—you're having lunch on a true piece of 1950s Disneyland history.

Back in 2023, Netflix broadcast the first season of Yu Yu Hakusho, a live-action adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi's beloved Japanese manga series. Now, nearly three years later, the series appears to have quietly been renewed, with plans to allow viewers back into the spirit realm allegedly well underway.

The series told the story of Junior High School student Yusuke Urameshi (Takumi Kitamura) who dies unexpectedly after saving a child from a car accident. As the plot develops, Yusuke is allowed to be resurrected, but it comes with a price: he has to become a Spirit Detective and help investigate supernatural occurrences.

The first season, consisting of 5 episodes, aired on December 14, 2023, and adapted the first 110 chapters of the original manga series by controversially condensing storylines, merging them, and ignoring them outright.

With 66 chapters of the manga left to adapt, Tokyo Sports is reporting that production on the series' second season is expected to begin this fall.

The original manga series ran in a weekly Japanese manga (comic book) magazine called Weekly Shonen Jump from December 3, 1990 until its conclusion on July 25, 1994. The chapters were collected and published in 19 volumes, and have since been translated to English and published by VIZ.

The series created a popular 1992 animated ("anime") adaptation which ran from October 10, 1992, until January 7, 1995.

In addition to its anime adaptation, the series also produced two feature films. The self-titled Yu Yu Hakusho: The Movie was released in 1993, with Yu Yu Hakusho the Movie: Poltergeist Report in 1994.

The creator of the series has since moved on to create another popular series, Hunter X Hunter, which he has been publishing off and on since 1998.

Exact details surrounding the alleged second season of YuYu Hakusho have not been released just yet; thus, there is no confirmation on which actors will be returning or any new blood that will be joining the show, nor confirmation of when a second season may air.

According to Netflix Japan’s Vice President of Content, Kaata Sakamoto, in an interview with Hyper Beast, the “five-episode Yu Yu Hakusho live-action series took almost five years to complete — from two years of pre-production, over 10 months of shooting, and another two years for post-production.” Fans are hopeful that the series second season won’t take as long to return to their screens.

Yu Yu Hakusho Season 1 is currently streaming exclusively on Netflix.

Julia Child was larger than life. At 6 feet, 2 inches tall, with an unmistakable voice, infectious laugh and giant personality, she didn't seem like the conventional image of a television chef. But that was part of her magic. She made cooking feel approachable, entertaining and, very fun.

Born in Pasadena, California, in 1912, Child did not begin her career in the kitchen. After graduating from Smith College, she worked in New York and later joined the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. It was after the war, when she moved to Paris with her husband, Paul Child, that she discovered the passion that would change the course of her life. She enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu and began studying French cooking seriously.

Together with Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, Child spent years developing and refining the recipes that would become Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Published in 1961, the groundbreaking cookbook helped demystify French cuisine for American home cooks. Rather than simply giving readers recipes, Child taught them techniques and encouraged them to understand what they were doing.

Then came television. The French Chef premiered nationally in 1963 and turned Child into a star. She demonstrated sophisticated dishes while remaining warm, humorous and wonderfully unpolished. Her self-deflecting humor and ability to laugh at herself was delicious. If something went wrong, she didn't panic. Instead, she kept going. And she showed viewers that mistakes were part of learning.

Child changed the way Americans thought about food. As Charlie Gibson once observed of the culinary landscape she entered: “When Julia started, Hamburger Helper was considered exotic.” Child offered an entirely different possibility. Food could be a wild and wonderful adventure.

Alice Waters also captured the heart of Child's philosophy, saying that “she wanted people to love food and have pleasure in eating.”

Anthony Bourdain called Child “the single most important, influential and game-changing figure in the history of American gastronomy.” He added, "And though uniquely situated to do so, she never endorsed a thing: not a pot, not a pan, not a chain of restaurants, not a spice blend, apron or boil-in-the-bag dinner. She will be remembered for what she did on this earth, which was to inspire millions to cook — and eat — better.”

Child died on August 13, 2004, at age 91, at her home in Montecito, California. She died just two days before her 92nd birthday. More than two decades later, the anniversary of her death offers a fitting opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary life she lived and the joy she brought to generations of home cooks.

The more techniques you learn, the more ingredients you understand and the more comfortable you become in the kitchen, the more possibilities open up.

And that's exactly what Child did as a teacher. She didn't simply tell people what to cook. She explained how cooking worked. Mastering the Art of French Cooking was designed as a teaching tool, with detailed explanations and step-by-step instructions that helped home cooks understand the techniques behind the recipes.

Child's television career carried that philosophy into people's homes. She demonstrated that even complicated dishes could become manageable when broken down into understandable steps. More importantly, she made viewers feel that learning was possible.

Deeper Meaning of Julia Child's Quote

Child's words appear to be about cooking. But the idea behind them is much bigger. Knowledge and creativity are sometimes treated as opposites. We imagine that creativity comes from spontaneity while knowledge comes from rules. Child understood that the two can actually work together.

Knowing more gives you more choices. Once you understand how ingredients behave, you can begin changing them. Once you learn a technique, you can adapt it. Once you understand why a recipe works, you can begin imagining how it might work differently.

That is the freedom Child was talking about. There is another lesson hidden in the quote. You don't have to start out creative. You can become more creative by becoming more curious.

Child didn't grow up as a professional chef. She discovered cooking later, immersed herself in learning and ultimately transformed that knowledge into a career that changed American food culture.

Her legacy wasn't simply a collection of recipes. It was a way of thinking. She encouraged people to ask questions, learn techniques, try something unfamiliar, and not be frightened by the possibility of getting it wrong. The kitchen became a place where knowledge could lead to experimentation. And that experimentation could lead to pleasure.

If you listened to country music in the late 1990s and early 2000s, chances are you remember Andy Griggs.

The Louisiana-born country singer broke onto the scene with his debut single, "You Won’t Ever Be Lonely," which became a major hit in 1999.

The song climbed to No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and remained there as one of the biggest country hits of the year. It also reached No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Griggs, who was born August 13, 1973, in West Monroe, Louisiana, turns 53 in 2026.

His success didn't stop with his debut.

In 2000, Griggs followed "You Won’t Ever Be Lonely" with another No. 2 country hit, "She’s More." The song spent five consecutive weeks at No. 2 on the country chart and became his second Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 37.

Both songs appeared on Griggs’ debut album, You Won’t Ever Be Lonely, which was released in 1999. The album went gold and produced three Top 10 country singles, including "I’ll Go Crazy," which peaked at No. 10.

The album's success helped establish Griggs as one of country music's notable new voices at the turn of the millennium. He had already been playing music for years before landing his RCA Nashville record deal, eventually moving to Nashville in 1995.

Music also played an important role in Griggs' life from an early age. According to the Grand Ole Opry, his father died from a brain tumor when Griggs was 11, and his older brother Mason, who had been a major musical influence on him, died from heart complications at 21.

After his breakout debut, Griggs continued to release music and score hits. His 2002 single "Tonight I Wanna Be Your Man" reached No. 7 on the country chart, while "She Thinks She Needs Me" and "If Heaven" both reached No. 5 in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

But for many country fans, those first two No. 2 hits remain the songs that immediately bring back the era.

Justin Hayward, the last surviving classic-era member of the Moody Blues, is returning to the United States as his Story in Your Eyes Tour continues. The veteran singer and guitarist will also perform a series of shows in the United Kingdom later this year.

The tour brings Hayward back to the stage with a set that covers different parts of his long career. Fans can expect classic Moody Blues songs, solo material, stories from his years in music and a new audience Q&A.

The tour takes its name from “The Story in Your Eyes,” a Moody Blues song from the band’s 1971 album Every Good Boy Deserves Favour. Hayward has also confirmed that songs such as “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon” and “Questions” remain important parts of his live set.

Hayward, now 79, has spent decades performing the music that helped make the Moody Blues one of rock’s best-known bands. He joined the group in 1966 and became a key songwriter, singer and guitarist.

His arrival helped push the Moody Blues in a new musical direction. In 1967, the band released Days of Future Passed, an album that moved them beyond their earlier R&B sound and toward progressive and symphonic rock.

That record included “Nights in White Satin,” the 1967 hit written by Hayward. The song became one of the band's signature recordings and has remained closely linked to Hayward throughout his career.

“I’m finding out things about these songs at the same time,” Hayward told ABC Audio, pr Everett Post. “Some of these things, I’ve never done onstage before.”

He has said that the songs he chooses are based partly on what feels right to him at the moment. At the same time, he knows there are certain songs fans expect to hear.

“Half of my show is stuff I couldn't leave out anyway, ‘Nights In White Satin,’ ‘Questions,’ Tuesday Afternoon,” The Story In Your Eyes,” ‘Forever Autumn’ and that kind of stuff,” Hayward told Goldmine.

The 2026 tour also has a small change in the lineup. Guitarist Mike Dawes is no longer part of Hayward's touring band as he focuses on his own work. He has been replaced by English guitarist Billy Adamson.

Hayward said he will also feature his Gibson guitar more during the performances and plans to make parts of the show more electric.

The current touring group includes Hayward, Adamson, guitar tech Josh Johnson, Julie Ragins and Karmen Gould.

The Moody Blues had not toured together since 2018, and Lodge's death ended hopes of a classic lineup reunion.

Other important members of the band have also died in recent years. Ray Thomas died in 2018, original drummer Graeme Edge died in 2021, Denny Laine died in 2023 and Mike Pinder died in 2024.

Hayward has spoken warmly about his former bandmates and the special relationship they shared on stage.

“I don't know if anyone ever noticed that we would mouth words to each other on stage,” Hayward recalled, according to UCR. “There were many times when, if I caught Ray's eye, or he caught mine, we would break up laughing. Even some small gestures had a meaning for us, and would set us off. It was great. I loved all that, and I miss it.”

Hayward's connection to the Moody Blues catalog remains central to his live performances. Along with “Nights in White Satin,” his songwriting credits include “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Never Comes the Day,” “Question,” “The Voice,” “I Know You're Out There Somewhere” and “English Sunset.”

His career has also extended well beyond the Moody Blues. He worked with John Lodge on the Blue Jays project, enjoyed solo success and recorded “Forever Autumn” for Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds.

In 2018, Hayward was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Moody Blues. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2022 for services to the music industry.

Hearties have theorized many ways his character could return - he was lost in a training exercise and had amnesia, he went deep undercover to infiltrate a crime syndicate and could not contact his family until he was done with his assignment — the list goes on and on. Whether his character returns as an apparition or a living being, there is opportunity for Jack to return, but at this time, there are no plans for his reappearance on the series.

Rhiannon Fish has starred in several television rom-coms, including Team Bride, A Splash of Love and A Love to Remember. She also stars as one-half of the sleuthing sister duo of Nikki & Nora: Sister Sleuths on Hallmark Mystery. Fish has had the opportunity to travel for several Hallmark movies! She previously starred in My Norwegian Holiday (Norway), Polar Opposites (South America, Antarctica), and A Costan Rican Wedding (Costa Rica).

Daniel Lissing is best known for playing Mountie Jack Thornton on Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart, as well James King on ABC’s Last Resort. He reprised his role as Mountie Jack in a single scene on When Hope Calls: A Country Christmas on Great American Family. He also starred as a park ranger in GAF’s A Christmas Star opposite Sara Canning. He previously reunited with co-star Erin Krakow in Hallmark Channel’s Santa Tell Me. Last year, he starred in Single on the 25th opposite Lyndsy Fonseca which was inspired by the Lauren Spencer-Smith song.
