Thirty-five years ago this week, three musicians from Aberdeen, Washington, walked out of a contract signing with a major record label carrying a check for $287,000. The label expected to break even. Nobody, not the band, not the executives, not the producers, had any idea what was about to happen.

The date was April 30, 1991. The band was Nirvana. The album that check helped pay for was Nevermind.

Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and a newly recruited drummer named Dave Grohl had spent the better part of two years shopping themselves to major labels after outgrowing their indie deal with Seattle's Sub Pop Records. When they signed with DGC Records on April 30, 1991, the label's most optimistic internal projection was that the band might eventually match the 250,000 copies Sonic Youth (a much better-known act on the same label) had sold with their previous record. That would have counted as a success.

DGC pressed fewer than 50,000 copies of Nevermind for its September 24, 1991 release.

Within three months, the album was selling 300,000 copies a week. By January 1992, it knocked Michael Jackson's Dangerous out of the number-one spot on the Billboard 200. By the end of that year, it had sold more than ten million copies in the United States alone.

The speed of it left everyone flat-footed. Geffen's president Ed Rosenblatt later put it with almost embarrassed honesty: the label essentially did nothing. The record just ran.

What Nevermind did to the music industry went well beyond sales. Before it, underground rock and mainstream radio existed in almost entirely separate worlds. After it, every major label scrambled to sign anything that sounded vaguely alternative, and the entire commercial apparatus of rock music shifted direction. The A&R man who signed the band, Gary Gersh, framed it plainly: there was a pre-Nevermind record business, and a post-Nevermind record business. The two had almost nothing in common.

The album had been recorded that previous spring, just weeks after the signing, at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, on a budget of $65,000. Producer Butch Vig shaped the sessions. The band arrived having rehearsed a set of songs that included an unreleased track called 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' which they had debuted live for the first time on April 17, two weeks before the contract was finalized. Nobody knew yet what that song would become.

Dave Grohl would go on to form Foo Fighters after the band dissolved following Cobain's death in 1994. Novoselic became a civic activist. Nevermind itself, and the band's entire catalog, has never stopped selling.

The $287,000 advance was split three ways and spread across two albums. Before taxes and management fees, each member took home roughly $95,700. Not life-changing money. The label got its investment back several thousand times over.

With the rise of "peak TV" and streaming, television schedules are in their most unpredictable era. That said, May is a month full of the vast majority of broadcast shows airing their finales, sticking to a time-honored tradition. But while some programs are landing, others are just taking off. And I'm ready to buckle up for quite a few shows coming our way this month, including a Lord of the Flies adaptation from the creator of Adolescence, the debut of a new Yellowstone spin-off in Dutton Ranch, and Nicolas Cage making his TV debut in Spider-Noir.

Here are the top 8 shows I'm most excited for in April 2026 across broadcast TV, Netflix, Prime Video and more.

The Top 8 TV Shows Premiering in May 2026Lord of the Flies (May 4) The cast of 'Lord of the Flies'

Adolescence was one of the biggest surprises of 2025, a blistering, yet breathtaking dissertation on how society and humanity's most violent ills can plague even its youngest souls. Perhaps nowhere is this theme more on display than Lord of the Flies, the iconic novel that stranded a plane full of young boys on a deserted island, as they attempted to form a civilization before quickly falling into chaos.

So it's only appropriate that Jack Thorne, who co-created the nine-time Emmy-winning series, would lend his voice to creating the first-ever TV adaptation of William Golding's classic 1954 work. The four-episode miniseries came out to critical acclaim in the U.K. last fall, but now it's left its own island and made its way over to the U.S., where it drops (fittingly) on Netflix on May 4. So take a seat and prepare to find out how far "boys will be boys" can actually extend as an aphorism!

Amadeus (May 8) The cast of 'Amadeus'

Despite having died 231 years ago, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart still lives on today. His work can be heard around the globe, from operas like The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro to even simple renditions of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." But, in 1979, the play Amadeus brought him to life in a new way, depicting a fictional rivalry between him and other noted composer Antonio Salieri. In 1984, it made its way from stage to screen, earning the Oscar for Best Picture and becoming renowned as one of the greatest films ever made.

It's a tough act to follow! But STARZ was confident in the music that could still be made from Mozart and Salieri's story. So, on May 8, a week before the Outlander finale, the network rolls out their own TV adaptation of Amadeus. This time, it's Will Sharpe (The White Lotus) going full 18th-century as Mozart, while Paul Bettany trades in his red Vision makeup for a white wig as Salieri. Like Lord of the Flies, Amadeus aired in the U.K. back in December 2025, but all five episodes are making their stateside debut now.

We can't help but stay in the U.K. with all of these great May shows! But we can't resist talking about Good Omens as, despite the profuse amount of demons in the series, the pairing of David Tennant and Michael Sheen is simply too angelic to resist. Neil Gaiman only intended a limited series from his initial adaptation of his fantastical 1990 novel. But there was so much acclaim around the series that it warranted a second season on Prime Video, and eventually, a third.

Fans were eager to see what would come of the final installment of Good Omens, especially after Crowley (Tennant) declared his love for Azirophale (Sheen), leading to the angel and demon's first kiss. Unfortunately, following Season 2, Gaiman was caught up in a controversy involving multiple sexual assault allegations. Not only did he leave production, but it was also announced that Season 3 would be reduced to a single, 90-minute episode. Regardless, that just makes us even more excited for May 13 to arrive, as we'll see this series move heaven and hell (perhaps quite literally) to hopefully give it the afterlife it deserves.

While the months turned colder near the end of 2025, Heated Rivalry was certainly keeping our homes warm! But as we eagerly await the highly anticipated next installment, Prime Video is filling the hockey-shaped hole in our hearts with Off Campus. Dropping all its episodes on May 13, the show is based on the book series of the same name by Elle Kennedy, which depicts the lives of an elite hockey team — and the various women that exist in its members' lives. With a cast of young standouts including Ella Bright (Malory Towers), Belmont Cameli (Saved by the Bell) and Jalen Thomas Brooks (The Pitt), Amazon has already renewed the series for a second season, proving Off Campus won't be put on ice any time soon!

Before Yellowstone came to its conclusion in December 2024, fans could rest easy knowing these would not be the last we'd see of the Dutton clan. That's because an upcoming spinoff had already been announced, depicting the lives of Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) following the conclusion of the incredibly popular Western series. And now, almost two years later, on May 15, we finally get to ride side saddle alongside the power couple in the new Paramount+ series Dutton Ranch.

Of course, there will be plenty of familiar anchoring the show, like posts in a fence. Alongside Reilly and Hauser, we'll get Finn Little reprising his role as Carter, and assumingly plenty of Yellowstone references along the way. But there's also a lot of exciting new characters, including the additions of Annette Bening, Ed Harris and Jai Courtney to the cast. And the new faces will continue should Dutton Ranch get renewed for a second season, and it's already been announced that showrunner Chad Feehan has already left the show after these initial nine episodes.

While the Duffer Brothers' time with Stranger Things has come to a long (and in some cases, very long) end, they are far from done with Netflix. Indeed, the Emmy nominees have now pivoted their focus to producing, and they've already lent their voices behind two streaming series in both Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen and the recently premiered Stranger Things: Tales from '85. They've saved, perhaps though, their strangest 2026 project for last.

The Boroughs, premiering May 21, takes a familiar concept to Stranger Things devotees, as a seemingly peaceful community is rocked to the core by an otherworldly threat. Rather than focusing on (rapidly-aging) teenagers, however, now the center is on the other end of the age spectrum, in a retirement community. The cast is filled with a number of exciting names, including Bill Pullman, Alfred Molina, Geena Davis and Alfre Woodard. Given the amount of talent both in front of and behind the camera, it's an exciting opportunity to learn that, when it comes to saving the world, age is just a number.

Nicolas Cage. Making his television debut in a lead role. As Spider-Man. Need we say more?

When Into the Spider-Verse hit theaters in what seems like a lifetime ago, it was an inspired casting choice to have the Oscar winner voice a hard-boiled detective parody of the iconic web-crawler. And, not wanting to leave money on the table, Sony found, of all the possible Spider-verses to try to mount into a live-action series, this was their best bet. And so we're taken to an alternate version of 1930s New York, as down-on-his-luck private eye Ben Reilly (Cage) is tasked with suiting up once more to take on the case of his life.

Considering this is one of the first major live-action Spider-Man TV shows, it makes sense that Sony is leaning into (or swinging into) the aesthetic fully for this film noir-themed series. Spider-Noir will be available to watch in two different color gradients, either "authentic black and white" and "true-hue full color." Americans will get a first glimpse at the action when the series premieres with all eight episodes on MGM+ on May 25. But the rest of the world won't be far behind, as Spider-Noir drops on Prime Video globally on May 27. So consider this a post-Memorial Day treat, as we celebrate the red, white and blue with a bit of black and white!

While For All Mankind Season 5 is coming to a close on May 29, fans are already looking ahead to next year, when the hit sci-fi series is set to complete its mission with one last batch of episodes. Luckily, on the same day, they'll be treated to the Apple TV show's first-ever spinoff, courtesy of Star City. And it's a premise that's truly...out of this world.

The new show takes us back to the era of For All Mankind's first couple of seasons, back when the series was focused on one simple historical scenario: What if the Russians won the "Space Race"? This time, however, we're shifting to the east to look at the action from the USSR's point of view. We peek behind the Iron Curtain to look at the lives of everyone from intelligence officers to the cosmonauts that make up the Soviet space program, and the various risks they're willing to take in pursuit of sending humanity to the stars. The first two episodes of Star City air May 29, helping us get ready to see our own "rockets red glare" on July 4 this summer.

1991 Passionate Garth Brooks Cover Became His Seventh No. 1 Hit and Ranks Among His All-Time Best Songs

Garth Brooks racked up his seventh No. 1 hit with a cover song written by one of his favorite artists, helping "Shameless" to rank as one of the country superstar's all-time best songs.

The country superstar covered the Billy Joel song in 1991. The tune was originally written for Joel's LP Storm Front.

Brooks famously covered the song for his 1991 LP Ropin' The Wind. But he never expected the passionate song to connect so deeply with his audience, who took the tune all the way to the top.

"Shameless" reached the top of the Billboard Country Charts in November, 1991. It remained there for two weeks and on the charts for a staggering 20 weeks. The Boot reported that the song became Brooks' seventh No. 1 single.

Ranker placed "Shameless" at the seventh spot on their list of Best Garth Brooks Songs. The 2025 list features some of the entertainer's most beloved tunes, including "The Dance," "Friends in Low Places," "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)," and "Unanswered Prayers."

According to Wide Open Country, Brooks explained his connection to the song in the liner notes to his compilation album The Hits. His exposure to the tune came from a 1990s mail-order music club.

"'Shameless' was the longest shot we took with a song," Brooks wrote. "I was talked into becoming a member of a CD club...you know, the 40,000 CD's for a penny deal. With those clubs, they write you with the selection of the month. If you don't write back and cancel, then they send it to you and charge you for it."

He continued, "I was on the road for six months with no one to check the mail, and came home to find six compact discs in my mailbox. Storm Front by Billy Joel was one of them. I hadn't listened to Billy Joel since the late seventies, probably since Glass Houses. I fell in love with the album and fell back in love with Billy Joel's music."

Brooks concluded, "One of his songs really captured me, a song called 'Shameless.' I kept watching it, and when he did not release it as a single, we contacted his people in the hopes that we could cut it. Billy Joel later said of Brooks' version of the song, "I had never had a record played on country-western radio. I am very grateful to Garth Brooks for making something that I wrote available to hear to people who wouldn't ordinarily have heard the music that I do."

The illness typically causes loose stools, stomach cramps, nausea, and sometimes fever or vomiting. For most travelers, the symptoms begin suddenly and last anywhere from a day or two to about a week.

Doctors say the root cause is often a mismatch between your gut microbiome and the bacteria common in a destination. Locals may have built up immunity to certain microbes over time. Visitors have not. And unfortunately, traveler’s tummy is common. Medical experts estimate that 30 to 70 percent of travelers experience it, depending on their destination and the season, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Where Travelers Are Most Likely to Get Sick

Regions with limited sanitation infrastructure or hotter climates tend to have higher rates of traveler’s diarrhea. Areas commonly associated with higher risk include parts of Asia, Africa, Mexico, the Middle East, and Central and South America.

Warm weather plays a role as well. Bacteria multiply more quickly in hot environments, so improperly stored food can become contaminated much more quickly, per the Cleveland Clinic.

But even in popular tourist areas with good restaurants, mistakes happen. Tap water used to wash vegetables, ice made from untreated water, or improperly handled street food can introduce harmful microbes.

Louis Beddouri has been to Thailand twice and both times has experienced severe stomach issues. "I think it was the mix of dehydration and the food," he said. "The heat was intense, and I probably wasn’t drinking enough water while trying all the local dishes. I was so weak for days afterward."

Smart Travel Habits That Protect Your Stomach

Fortunately, avoiding traveler’s tummy does not require extreme precautions. A few simple habits can dramatically reduce your risk.

Hand hygiene is one of the most effective forms of protection. Washing hands before eating or carrying hand sanitizer when sinks are unavailable helps prevent bacteria from entering the digestive system.

Choosing drinks wisely also matters. Bottled beverages, boiled water, and sealed containers are safer options in destinations where tap water quality may vary.

Another smart strategy is packing basic travel medications. Over-the-counter treatments, such as anti-diarrheal medication or electrolyte packets, can help manage symptoms if illness strikes during a trip.

Most cases resolve on their own within a few days, but staying hydrated is critical because dehydration is the most common complication.

What to Do If Travelers' Tummy Hits During Your Trip

Even the most careful traveler can get sick. Sometimes, all it takes is one contaminated ingredient. If symptoms begin, doctors typically recommend rest, hydration, and simple foods such as bananas, rice, applesauce, or toast until the stomach settles.

Most cases improve within two to three days. However, travelers should seek medical help if symptoms become severe, including high fever or bloody stools, or last longer than several days.

The key is not to panic. Traveler’s tummy is unpleasant but usually temporary. And oddly enough, it becomes one of those stories that travelers laugh about later. The time you spent half a day hiding in a hotel room while your friends explored the city. Travel memories are not always glamorous.

For over four decades, the vocalist of the thrash metal band has proven his influence in the music scene with signature songs like “Practice What You Preach,” “Over the Wall” and “Disciples of The Watch,” as well as a fierce stage presence that is impossible to ignore.

However, behind his musical achievements, Billy has announced an exciting new project that has fans eager for what’s next.

In an Instagram update, the 63-year-old rocker announced the upcoming release of his memoir Holding My Breath: The Two Testaments of Chuck Billy.

“METALHEAD BROTHERS AND SISTERS! I’m stoked to announce that my memoir, “Holding My Breath”, is officially available for pre-order at chuckbillybook.com. This book is about two versions of me that are really just one story; the guy who thought he was invincible, and the guy who learned how fragile life really is,” the caption reads.

The book, which was described as "not your typical rock memoir,” focuses on his journey on and off the stage, especially his health battle in the early 2000s that forced his music career to pause.

Scheduled to be released on November 10, 2026, the memoir features a two-part narrative, with the “Old Testament” tracing his rise in music career while the “New Testament” covers his cancer battle and recovery.

In 2001, Testament’s lead vocalist was diagnosed with germ cell seminoma, a rare type of cancer that was detected near his heart.

According to him, the diagnosis was an accidental discovery that ultimately saved his life.

“The doctor called back and everything was fine with my wife, but they wanted me to come in for a CAT Scan on my chest and further X-rays,” the musician told Legendary Rock Interviews, adding, “That’s how they found it. So it was kind of like a fluke situation. If that lady had never knocked on my door to sell my house, I probably would have died and never seen it coming because I had a tumor in my chest that was the size of a squash. It was growing off my heart and pushing on my lungs, which is why I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t have any space in there for my lungs to expand.”

At the time, he underwent chemotherapy and, being a Native American, he utilized traditional medicine, including seeking help from spiritual healers.

A year into treatment and recovery, he was declared cancer-free in 2002.

Now, Billy remains healthy and has stayed cancer-free for over 24 years.

The Social Network is ranked pretty high up on the Times' list of the 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century, coming it at No. 10. It joins the ranks of other top-ten films, like 2017's Get Out (No. 8), 2007's There Will Be Blood (No. 3), 2019's Parasite (No. 1) and more highly-rated movies.

The Social Network stars Jesse Eisenbergin the role of Zuckerberg, plus performances from Andrew Garfield, Armie Hammer, Justin Timberlake, Dakota Johnson and Aaron Sorkin, who also wrote the screenplay for the film.

Split ends are the great equalizer of hair care. Doesn't matter if your hair is fine or thick, curly or straight, color-treated or completely virgin—if you use heat, brush aggressively, sleep on a cotton pillowcase or simply exist in the world with hair on your head (hi!), split ends are coming for you eventually.

Yet, they remain one of those things people either aggressively try to treat with the wrong products or ignore entirely until they're looking at damage that's traveled halfway up the shaft. Neither approach is doing your hair any favors.

Here's what's actually true: no product on earth can fully repair a split end. Every stylist and scientist will tell you the same thing—once the hair has split, cutting it is the only way to truly get rid of it. But that doesn't mean treatment products are useless. Far from it.

The right split end serum or mask can seal and smooth the damage so it's nearly invisible, protect already-fragile ends from splitting further and—when used consistently—meaningfully reduce how fast the damage comes back. Think of it less like surgery and more like a very good bandage that also happens to make your hair look incredible.

The market for split end treatments has evolved in recent years. Where once you had a handful of heavy oils and drugstore serums, you now have peptide-based formulas that work at the structural level, overnight masks that rebuild bonds while you sleep and lightweight leave-ins designed specifically for fine or curly hair that used to be left out of the conversation entirely.

To find out which ones are actually worth your money, we talked to five professional hairstylists—Rogerio Cavalcante, founder of Brazil Edition; T Cooper, professional hairstylist; Chaz Dean, founder of WEN and celebrity hairstylist; Brendnetta Ashley, hairstylist; and Jon Reyman, Global Creative Director for Goddess Maintenance Co.—about what causes split ends, what ingredients actually help and which 11 treatments they recommend (including one called out as a "holy grail" serum).

What Causes Split Ends?

The honest answer, per Reyman, is life. "Split ends are the result of damaged, compromised hair, and the causes are everywhere," he says, rattling off five categories—chemical, heat, mechanical, water and environmental damage. All of them contribute.

Ashley points to heat styling, chemical services, friction from rough detangling or cotton pillowcases and skipping trims as the main culprits.

Cooper adds "lack of moisture" to the list, explaining that curly, coily and kinky hair types tend to be more vulnerable specifically because the natural oils produced at the scalp have a harder time traveling down a tightly coiled strand. "When the ends get less protection, they tend to split faster," she says.

Fine hair is also at higher risk—Cavalcante says it's simply more delicate, meaning it reaches its breaking point faster than thicker strands. But as Cooper puts it, split ends don't really discriminate. She sees them across all hair types, especially in anyone who colors or heat styles regularly.

Can You Actually Repair Split Ends Without Cutting Your Hair?

No—and every expert on this list agrees on that.

"I'm gonna be so real with you," Cooper says. "Once the hair is split, that's it." Products can make split ends look and feel better, she explains, and temporarily seal them to prevent further damage—but the split is still there. "The only real fix is cutting,” says Cavalcante.

That said, he adds that the right products can seal the ends, smooth them and make the damage almost invisible.

What products actually do, Reyman explains, is "mask, strengthen and support the hair, protecting it from getting worse and smoothing the appearance of damage." That's genuinely valuable, especially in the weeks between trims. Think of treatment products as maintenance between cuts rather than a substitute for them.

The Ingredients That Actually Help Repair or Seal Split Ends

Cavalcante's approach is to layer different types of ingredients that each do different jobs. Peptides reinforce the hair's internal structure; oils and butters soften and reduce breakage; silicones seal everything together and give that polished, smooth finish. "It's really about strength and smoothness working together," he says.

Cooper flags silicones specifically as the most effective ingredient for the smoothing and sealing job—they coat the split end and make it look polished even when it can't be truly fixed. She also recommends argan oil and coconut oil as solid alternatives.

Dean is a devoted fan of plant-based oils across the board. Coconut, argan and abyssinian oils all share the ability to deeply nourish and "fill in the cracks" of damaged cuticles, he explains, making hair appear smoother and shinier until you can get in for a trim.

For color-treated or chemically processed hair, the experts are unified: you need moisture and strength working together. Cavalcante recommends prioritizing peptides for structural support, richer butters for softness and UV protection to prevent further color damage. Ashley adds bond builders to the list for anyone whose hair has been chemically processed, since those work from within the hair structure rather than just on the surface.

How To Prevent Split Ends From Coming Back

Prevention, as it turns out, is more about habits than products—though the right products definitely help. Cooper's list is thorough: regular trims, keeping hair moisturized, staying hydrated, limiting heat styling and always using a heat protectant when you do. She also flags friction as something people underestimate. A silk pillowcase is a genuinely impactful swap.

As far as haircuts, Ashley's trim schedule recommendation is every six to eight weeks, trimming just a quarter to a half inch. You don't need to lose length to stay on top of split ends; you just need to stay consistent.

Minsk, April 30, 1961. A 19-year-old pharmacist says "Da" to an American defector. She thinks she’s headed for the American Dream in the West. Two years later, she’s sitting in a Dallas police station while the world screams for her husband’s head.

Marina Prusakova Oswald Porter is 84 now and she isn't in a Siberian gulag or a Moscow high-rise. She still lives in Dallas, and has remained there since that infamous day in 1963. The last time she was pictured was in 2013, at a Walmart in Texas.

For almost sixty-three years, the most infamous widow in American history has maintained a life of normalcy. She raised daughters who eventually changed their last names. She married a drag racer named Kenneth Porter. She clocked in for shifts at a department store, disappearing into the Dallas suburbs.

But you don’t just walk away when your first husband, Lee Harvey Oswald, altered history with a mail-order rifle. Marina once described her life as a weight she couldn't drop. "I feel like a hunchback," she said. "The stone that's trapped on me, I cannot get rid of it."

The reality of her day-to-day life is a woman trying to live her life without a tabloid photographer jumping out from behind the dairy case. The mail still brings hate mail, marriage proposals, and conspiracy zines to her porch.

Her public stance on the assassination has shifted over the decades. In 1964, she told the Warren Commission she believed Lee was guilty. Her husband’s actions also left her with a burden: “[I]tried to prove that I am worthy of this country, tried to go backwards to please people. … ‘Please like me, I’m OK,’” she once said.

“You learn to live not with the guilt that you shed because you are you and you’re not responsible for somebody’s doing, whether it’s your child or husband, gradually you get out of that guilty conscience,” Oswald’s widow continued. “I’m sympathetic to Lee, many times, but I’m also angry at him. He left me to swim in the dirty water. … So many times I questioned: ‘Did he use me as well? Does he really care for me at all?’”

By the 1990s, she had changed her mind, appearing on Hard Copy insisting he was a patsy. “I could never put Lee against JFK,” she said. “That never made sense to me.”

A major shift in her private life occurred recently. Porter, her husband of nearly 60 years, died in late 2024. For decades, he acted as her primary gatekeeper, shielding her from the researchers and Kennedy hunters who still park down the street with long lenses.

Oswald’s widow doesn't give interviews or write books. The conspiracy community already has a million versions of her life scripted. They track her to the local pharmacy. They zoom in, searching for a clue in the way she carries her grocery bags.

Public fascination remains high because she is the last living bridge to Dealey Plaza. She is the one who saw the rifle in the garage. She is the one who lived through the domestic violence that defined the Oswald household before the shots were fired.

History hasn’t decided if Marina Oswald is a hero or a villain. But what can be said is she is a woman who traded a Soviet struggle for an American one. The tragedy of November 22 belongs to history. But the aftermath belongs to the woman who has spent the last sixty years trying to be anyone other than Mrs. Lee Harvey Oswald.

John Denver had a way of making life’s simplest moments feel special, and a No. 1 crossover hit, released in 1974, is a perfect example of his gift as a songwriter.

"Back Home Again" is one of Denver's most beloved songs, celebrating the idea of slowing down and being present in the moment. The tune, which is deeply rooted in country tradition, but celebrated the pop and folk music genres, became a huge crossover hit.

The song was Denver's first No. 1 on Billboard's Country Music chart. It hit the top spot in November 1974 and remained on the charts for 14 weeks in total. "Back Home Again" simultaneously found huge success on the Billboard Top 100, peaking at No. 5.

The song shared the same name as Denver's 1974 LP, which featured classic songs such as "Grandma's Feather Bed," "Annie's Song," "Thank God I'm a Country Boy," and "Back Home Again."

According to American Songwriter, the reflective song echoed Denver's feelings about being on the road and returning home to his family. Its lyrics told the story of returning to "a fire softly burning, supper’s on the stove, but it’s the light in your eyes that makes him warm."

These words are said to have mirrored Denver’s conflicted feelings about success. His popularity kept him away from home and from his wife, Annie Martell Denver, and their two children, for long stretches at a time. According to Songfacts, Denver's producer, Milt Okun, explained the song's meaning in the liner notes of a compilation LP of the entertainer's greatest hits.

"That song came out of John being on the road so often and that feeling of being back home again. I loved the lyrics. That's one of the nicest songs he wrote," Okun penned.

Tickets to the 1984 Games started at just $3—about $10 today adjusted for inflation—and opening ceremony seats went for around $100, the equivalent of about $300 in today's dollars. Now, those same opening ceremony tickets are reaching 50 times that price.

LA28 has responded to the backlash, emphasizing that at least one million tickets are priced at $28 and that a third of all tickets are under $100. Organizers also point to outside factors driving up costs, including bots, brokers and resellers snapping up high-demand inventory. Still, with Drop 2 set for August 2026, fans are watching closely to see whether prices come down—or whether the affordability promise was, as one ticket lottery winner put it to The Times, "total incompetence or a total lie."

Where Will the 2028 Olympics Be Held?

While Los Angeles is the official host city, calling these the "LA Olympics" is honestly underselling it. The 2028 Olympics location spans nearly 50 competition venues spread across Southern California and beyond—from San Diego to San Jose, with softball and canoe slalom all the way out in Oklahoma City.

The organizing committee arranged venues into geographic clusters to make navigation easier. The DTLA (Downtown Los Angeles) Zone includes venues like Crypto.com Arena, the LA Convention Center and Peacock Theater, while the Inglewood Zone features the massive SoFi Stadium and the brand-new Intuit Dome. Meanwhile, Long Beach hosts its own cluster along the waterfront, and venues in Pasadena, Venice Beach, Orange County and the San Fernando Valley round out the Southern California footprint.

This is the first Summer Olympics in 80 years to not build any new permanent venues—organizers are using existing stadiums, arenas and facilities that were already part of LA's sports infrastructure. It's a sustainability play that also saves massive amounts of money, following the model that made the 1984 LA Games financially successful.

Here's where things get interesting. For the first time in Olympic history, the 2028 opening ceremony will be co-hosted by two venues simultaneously: SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and the LA Memorial Coliseum.

The Coliseum holds special significance—it hosted both the 1932 and 1984 LA Olympics, and the 2028 Games will make it the first stadium ever to host three different Olympiads. Including it in the dual opening ceremony not only honors that legacy, but also acknowledges that the nearly century-old venue—built in 1923—can't accommodate the scale of modern Olympic ceremonies alone.

SoFi Stadium, meanwhile, is one of the most technologically advanced sports facilities on the planet. The $5 billion venue opened in 2020 as home to the NFL's LA Rams and Chargers, and boasts an Infinity Screen by Samsung—also known as the Oculus—that's basically a high-tech miracle. Combining the historic Coliseum with ultra-modern SoFi creates a past-meets-future vibe that feels very LA.

The closing ceremony will be held exclusively at the Coliseum on July 30, bringing things full circle at the venue where LA's Olympic story began in 1932.

What New Sports Are Being Added for LA 2028?

Six sports are either making their Olympic debut or returning after long absences, and they're a fascinating mix of very American additions and long-overdue comebacks.

1. Flag Football

This fun sport makes its Olympic debut, bringing a non-contact version of American football to the global stage. Given that the NFL is a cultural juggernaut in the US, this feels like a natural addition for an LA-hosted Games. The sport will be played at BMO Stadium (called Exposition Park Stadium during the Olympics) right next to the Coliseum.

2. Squash

After years of lobbying from the global squash community, the sport will also debut at LA 2028. The fast-paced racquet sport has a devoted following worldwide and will finally get its Olympic moment in the Comcast Squash Center located at Universal Studios.

3. Cricket

Cricket returns for the first time in 128 years! It was last seen at the 1900 Paris Olympics and its inclusion reflects cricket's explosive global popularity—particularly in India, Pakistan, Australia and the Caribbean. Matches will be held at a temporary cricket stadium built at the Fairplex in Pomona, which is about 30 miles east of Los Angeles.

4. Lacrosse

Another sport back after a century-long absence is lacrosse, last played in the 1908 Summer Games. But this time, there's a twist: Instead of traditional 10-player teams, the Olympics will feature a "sixes" format with just six players per side, making for faster, more dynamic gameplay.

5. Baseball

Baseball returns to the Olympics after being left out of the Paris 2024 program. The sport will be played at Dodger Stadium—one of baseball's most legendary ballparks. Did anyone say Dodger dog?

6. Softball

Softball also makes its Olympic comeback after getting benched in the 2024 Olympics—and the timing couldn't be better. The sport is having a major cultural moment, with the 2025 Women's College World Series averaging a record 1.3 million viewers per game and outdrawing the Men's College World Series for the first time in history.

However, unlike most LA 2028 events, softball heads out of state to Oklahoma City—the U.S. softball capital—where existing facilities will host the women's tournament. (Per IOC tradition, baseball is contested as a men's sport and softball as a women's sport at the Olympics.)

All told, the 2028 Olympics will feature 351 medal events—22 more than Paris 2024—spread across 36 sports. New mixed-gender team events in archery, athletics, gymnastics, golf, rowing and table tennis will further expand the program.

In perhaps the most audacious venue decision, swimming at the 2028 Olympics will be held at SoFi Stadium. Yes, the football stadium. Organizers plan to install a massive temporary pool inside the arena, creating what will be the largest swimming venue in Olympic history with capacity for 38,000 spectators.

This is a dramatic departure from traditional Olympic aquatics venues, but it speaks to LA28's commitment to using existing facilities rather than building new ones. The original plan called for constructing a temporary pool at USC's Dedeaux Field, but that was scrapped to save costs.

Artistic swimming (synchronized swimming) will take place in Long Beach, while diving moves to the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena—a facility built with leftover funds from the 1984 LA Olympics.

Which Iconic LA Venues Will Host the 2028 Olympics?

Some of LA's most legendary sports and entertainment venues are getting in on the Olympic action, creating unique settings you won't see at most Games.

The LA Memorial Coliseum hosts athletics (track and field) and becomes the first venue to host three Olympics. Dodger Stadium—one of baseball's most iconic ballparks—naturally hosts Olympic baseball. The Rose Bowl in Pasadena stages the soccer finals, joining the LA Memorial Coliseum as the only stadiums in the world to host three Olympic Games.

Basketball games will be held at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.

Crypto.com Arena—home to the Lakers, Kings and Sparks—handles artistic gymnastics, trampoline and the boxing finals, while the brand-new Intuit Dome hosts basketball. SoFi Stadium pulls double duty with both the opening ceremony and swimming.

But LA28 is also embracing unconventional venues that showcase Southern California's diversity. Long Beach's Alamitos Beach hosts beach volleyball, while skateboarding heads to the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area in the San Fernando Valley.Santa Anita Park in Arcadia—famous for thoroughbred racing—handles equestrian events. And perhaps most unexpectedly, Trestles Beach in San Diego County (located between LA and San Diego) hosts surfing at one of the world's most famous surf breaks.

Even Universal Studios Hollywood is in on the action, hosting squash at the Comcast Squash Center. Point is, the willingness to think creatively about venues sets LA 2028 apart.

Will 2028 Olympics Events Be Held Outside California?

Yes—in a cost-saving move that's generated some debate, two sports will be contested in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, about 1,350 miles from Los Angeles.

Softball will use Devon Park (the longtime home of the Women's College World Series), while canoe slalom heads to Riversport OKC—both existing venues that saved organizers from building temporary facilities in Southern California. It's a practical decision that saves money and reduces environmental impact. But it also means those sports won't have the full Olympic atmosphere of being in the host city during the Games.

Soccer (football) preliminaries will also be played nationwide before the knockout rounds move to California. Confirmed preliminary venues include stadiums in New York, Columbus (Ohio), St. Louis, Nashville, San Jose and San Diego. The match schedule will progressively move west as teams advance, minimizing travel for finalists.

This distributed approach reflects modern Olympic realities—it's often more efficient to use existing world-class facilities than to build new ones that might not get used after the Games end.

How Many People Will Attend the 2028 Olympics?

Organizers expect over 15,000 athletes to compete across the Olympics and Paralympics combined. Add in coaches, officials, media, sponsors and spectators, and you're looking at millions of people descending on Southern California over the summer of 2028.

The exact spectator count will depend on venue capacities and ticketing strategies, but with SoFi Stadium alone holding 38,000 for swimming and the Coliseum seating over 77,000 for athletics, individual sessions could draw massive crowds. LA28 plans to sell roughly 14 million tickets total—the equivalent of selling out four entire Dodger Stadium seasons in a single month—according to LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover. LA's extensive hotel infrastructure and transportation network will be tested like never before.

Hoover also shared that a 50-state torch relay is planned to kick off in April 2028, designed to "bind the nation to LA and California." That's a whole lot of build-up before the Games even begin!

If you were a fan of the '70s and '80s television series Happy Days, surely you wonder if the actors who played the younger fellas—Ron Howard (Richie Cunningham), 72, Henry Winkler (Arthur 'Fonzie' Fonzarelli), 80, Anson Williams (Potsie Weber), 76, and Donny Most (Ralph Malph), 72—are still friends after all these years. Well, they most certainly are! In fact, the four of them even share a group text.

This week, Anson Williams joined the 2 B*tches From Texas podcast with hosts (and 70s and 80s actresses) Morgan Fairchild and Cathryn Hartt. The three chatted, and in between sharing some Happy Days insider stories, Williams revealed the four old friends still stay in touch to this day. In fact, he says, there is actually a Happy Days group text alive out there!

"It's so funny because even up till today we have an open text thing," says Williams, referring to their group text. He adds that the group includes, "Ron, Donnie, Henry, and myself."

If you're wondering what the foursome talks about in their group text, Williams only said they always answer each other right back (he snapped his fingers to show how quickly). He also revealed the surprising topic they don't discuss in the text: business. They don't talk shop.

"We've been friends for 52 years," Williams says. "And it has nothing to do with business. It has to do with friendship. There's a deep, deep friendship."

It's quite funny to think of their Happy Days characters interacting in a modern-day group chat. I mean, how would Fonzie make his cool-guy entrance? How do you even spell 'Ayyyye'? Would Ralph Malph's hilarity come through? Surely his jokes via text would go over Potsie's head anyway. And Richie, he would probably start every text with "Golly, guys..."

Of course, we'll never know how that would go, but it does warm the heart to know the old friends stay in touch five decades after they worked on such an iconic show together. No word if Scott Baio knows about the group text ...
