1985 Rock Hit Was Originally Hated by the Legendary Band That Recorded It
In 1985, the legendary rock band Heart made a huge comeback with their self-titled album, Heart, released on June 21, 1985. But one of the album's biggest singles, "What About Love," almost never made it on the record after Nancy and Ann Wilson reportedly hated the demo. Luckily, Heart ended up recording the track, and it was an extreme success.
At the time, Heart was going through a bit of a downturn with their career, with their last hit song coming out several years earlier. They were forced to change record labels after Epic Records dropped them, and Heart was their new start at Capitol Records. There was likely a ton of pressure on the band to get it right.
"What About Love" is a rare song that wasn't written by members of Heart. Instead, it was written by songwriters Jim Vallance, Sheron Alton, and Brian Allen, and recorded by the band Toronto in 1982, although it wasn't released. So a few years later, it was brought to Heart as a demo.

In the book Heart: In the Studio by Jake Brown, which contains extensive interviews with band members and others involved in making Heart's hit music, producer Ron Nevison revealed how much Heart disliked "What About Love" when they first heard it.
"When I played that song, Nancy left the room. She wasn't happy with that song at first for Heart," recalled Nevison, via JimVallance.com. "They hated the treatment and production of the demo, and I think it was more the vocal they hated."
Nevison pushed the band to see the song through recording, with their vocals, in order to reveal the potential, adding, "It became much more their song by the time we'd gone from pre-production to proper recording ... The lesson there is always jump to conclusions slowly."
Eventually, Heart agreed to include the song on the new album, and it's a good thing they did. The track soared up the charts, becoming Heart's first Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hit in five years. It peaked at No. 10.

There are a few home goods that never fall out of rotation: Crisp sheets, a well-made duvet, a plush rug, or a good towel set, to name a few. They don’t rely on trends or seasonal reinvention — they just consistently work, no matter how your taste shifts over time. Striped bedding exists comfortably in that same space. Not loud or trend-driven, but rooted in tradition. The pattern has a rare flexibility that allows it to move easily across design styles, spanning everything from classic coastal and preppy to modern minimalist and even bold maximalist, without ever feeling out of place.
The Regency Heights Essential Full/Queen Reversible Striped Comforter Set builds on that idea with its straightforward design. Originally $90 and now $30, it’s marked down 67% with a Walmart clearance deal. The dual design adds flexibility, giving you two looks for the price of one while staying timeless.

The design is built around reversible dual-stripe prints, giving you two distinct looks in one set. One side features bold, wide horizontal stripes that feel clean and graphic across the bed, while the other has medium-scale diagonal stripes that create a more dynamic, angled pattern. Together, they offer an easy way to shift the look of the room without changing the overall palette or styling, and even let you mix patterns between the comforter and shams for a more layered look.
Dubbed as “lightweight,” “very soft,” and “comfortable” by shoppers, each piece is made of a breathable microfiber that feels soft and lightweight without being heavy or stiff, designed for all-season comfort you can rely on year-round. During the advertising presentation for the 2026 Fox Upfront, the New York City Center was filled with star-studded energy as the Baywatch reboot cast made a notable appearance, including Stephen Amell, former elite gymnast Livvy Dunne, Shay Mitchell, Noah Beck and of course, Brooks Nader.

In one of the interviews, the model-actress mentioned the OGs of Baywatch, Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra, adding how honored she was to be “filling in their shoes.”
“It’s such an honor to pay homage to the original series and the muses of Baywatch,” she told Extra TV. “They’ve been on my moodboard, both Carmen Electra and Pamela Anderson, since I can remember.”
Moreover, she revealed how her 2023 cover shoot may have helped lead her toward her character in the upcoming series.
View this post on Instagram“I feel like I kinda manifested this role with my Sports Illustrated cover,” she told Extra TV. “I was wearing the red one piece and I was like ‘This is so Baywatch’ and lo and behold, here we are.”
The 29-year-old model had her breakthrough in 2019 after winning the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Swim Search, which landed her a spot in the publication’s 2020 issue as one of the rookies.
This served as a turning point for her modeling career, leading to consecutive appearances in the magazine and eventually making it onto the cover of the 2023 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
Not only did it mark her fifth overall appearance, but also her first cover for the magazine.
As she noted, Nader stunned in a striking red high-cut one-piece swimsuit designed by Matthew Bruch that closely resembled the iconic look of the Baywatch lifeguards on the show.
Three years later, media outlets confirmed that the Baton Rouge native was among the official lead stars of the upcoming Fox series.
Taking on the role of Selene, her character is the "sharp-tongued" Captain of the Zuma Beach lifeguards.
Nader is joined by Jessica Belkin, Livvy Dunne, Shay Mitchell, Hassie Harrison, Noah Beck and Stephen Amell as Hobie Buchannon, the son of Mitch Buchannon, originally played by David Hasselhoff and later Dwayne Johnson.
Fox has officially announced that the Baywatch premiere will be set for January 2027.

1979 Hit Film, Ranked Among the ‘Greatest Movies of All Time,’ Featured an Angry Unscripted Moment
In 1979, Kramer vs. Kramer was one of the biggest box office hits of the year. Starring Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep as divorcing couple Ted and Joanna Kramer, the legal drama about a child custody battle won five Academy Awards, for Best Picture, Best Actor (Hoffman), Best Supporting Actress (Streep), Directing (Robert Benton), and Writing (Benton).
Varietyranked Kramer vs. Kramer among the 100 greatest movies of all time, describing it as “piercingly perceptive grown-up filmmaking, all too rare today,” on a list topped by classics such as Psycho, The Wizard of Oz, The Godfather, and Citizen Kane.
The film’s subject matter was all too real for Hoffman, who was going through a difficult divorce from his first wife, Anne Byrne, at the time.

Real-life dramaIn the 2001 documentary Finding The Truth: The Making of Kramer vs. Kramer, Hoffman recalled how his personal life affected his role in the film.
"It was the first time I ever made a movie where I was living through what I was acting, unlike a writer or painter, who gets up in the morning and can exorcise what they're going through," he explained. “It's quite unusual to be getting a divorce, my first and only divorce, at the time I'm shooting a movie about a man getting a divorce."
Hoffman seemingly let his real-life emotions get to him while filming a pivotal scene with Streep, where Ted violently tosses a glass of wine at Joanna, smashing the glass against a wall. According to Turner Classic Movies, the unscripted moment was “a real moment of frustration from Hoffman and Streep's reaction is genuine.” The actor had reportedly been agitated with Streep and Benton while shooting the scene.
In the documentary, Hoffman admitted, "I'm sure I was acting out on [Streep] throughout the movie. Stuff that I was feeling toward the wife that I was divorcing in real life.”
“She was pissed," he added of Streep's reaction to the impromptu wine glass scene.
Meryl Streep said Dustin Hoffman ‘overstepped’Streep never worked with Hoffman again after Kramer vs. Kramer. In 2018, she told the New York Times that the actor slapped her during filming to make her performance more authentic.
“This is tricky because when you’re an actor, you’re in a scene, you have to feel free,” Streep shared. “I’m sure that I have inadvertently hurt people in physical scenes. But there’s a certain amount of forgiveness in that. But this was my first movie, and it was my first take in my first movie, and he just slapped me. And you see it in the movie. It was overstepping.”
The Oscar-winning actress added that such a move would never fly today. “I think those things are being corrected in this moment. And they’re not politically corrected, they’re fixed,” she said. “They will be fixed, because people won’t accept it anymore. So that’s a good thing.”
7 Common Plants That Can Ruin Your Yard, According to Experts
Plants can add beauty to your yard or serve as easy ground cover, but some popular choices can create more trouble than they’re worth. Fast-growing varieties may look appealing at first, yet they often spread aggressively, crowd out nearby plants and even damage trees or soil over time.
Experts recommend keeping a close eye on these seven plants and using caution when adding them to your landscape to help protect your yard and maintain a healthy garden.
1. WintercreeperPhoto by Jovan Vasiljević on Unsplash
Wintercreeper is a vining plant that many gardeners find attractive because it requires little maintenance and spreads quickly. That same fast growth also makes it highly invasive, especially since it can thrive in a wide range of conditions.
“To get rid of it and prevent the plant from spreading further, hand-pull it, removing any runners and roots,” says Angelika Zaber, a lawn care specialist and gardening expert at Online Turf. “If the plant has spread too much, cut the vines and apply herbicide to prevent regrowth.”
2. Tree of HeavenPhoto by Feifei Cui-Paoluzzo on Getty Images
It might have a beautiful name, but this tree is considered one of the most invasive trees in many regions. Not only does it grow quickly, but it produces large amounts of seeds and can spread rapidly through root suckers.
Tree of heaven is notoriously tough to control once it takes hold. It can damage sidewalks, foundations and nearby plants by competing for resources.
Young trees can occasionally be pulled by hand, but established trees typically require cutting and targeted herbicide to prevent regrowth. Ongoing monitoring is essential to keep an eye out for new shoots, which can continue to appear long after removal and require additional maintenance.
3. Purple LoosestrifePhoto by Peter Hoogmoed on Unsplash
This plant produces impressive spikes of flowers, but it can become a major headache once established. Its deep taproot is very difficult to remove and allows it to spread rapidly.
“On top of this, it’s also not liked by wildlife, resulting in less habitat being available for them,” Zaber says.
Eliminate purple loosestrife by digging up the entire root system if the infestation is small enough to manage. If not, use a vegetation killer that contains glyphosate as a last resort.
4. MintPhoto by Jena Ardell on Getty Images
Mint is a favorite herb among gardeners, but it does best when kept in a container. When planted directly in the ground, mint spreads rapidly and can quickly take over garden beds.
Many people underestimate how aggressive mint can be. It can easily crowd out other herbs and plants if not controlled. If mint has already spread, pull it up by the roots and continue removing any new shoots as they appear.
5. English IvyPhoto by Jena Ardell on Getty Images
English ivy is one of the most invasive ornamental vines.
“Some people plant it as a ground cover without realizing how quickly it can spread across lawns, flower beds and fences,” Zaber explains. “It can even spread onto trees, block their access to sunlight and compete for nutrients, often making them vulnerable to falling over during bad weather.”
Remove ivy from trees by cutting across all stems near ground level using a pruning saw or chainsaw. The remaining plant will eventually die back and can be pulled away. Dig out any stumps when possible or continue cutting it back to ground level.
When used as a ground cover, hand-pull or dig up all stems and roots. “For deep-rooted areas, you may need to use a border fork,” Zaber says. “Make sure to keep an eye on the area you cleared. In case the plant comes back, repeat this process.”
6. BambooPhoto by DigiPub on Getty Images
Bamboo can give your yard a sleek, modern look, but some varieties are notoriously difficult to control. Running bamboo spreads through underground rhizomes, allowing it to travel far beyond its original planting spot and quickly take over.
Once established, it can pop up virtually everywhere, from lawns to garden beds to neighboring yards, and it’s extraordinarily challenging to get rid of.
Manage bamboo by installing a deep root barrier when planting to contain its spread. Tackle existing growth by repeated cutting combined with digging out the rhizomes to gradually eliminate it.
7. Chinese WisteriaPhoto by TonyBaggett on Getty Images
Chinese wisteria may have a romantic look, but it’s an aggressive vine that can quickly overrun an entire yard.
“It’s unfortunate that it’s invasive, because it has beautiful flowers,” says Steve Corcoran, CEO of Lawn Love. “Because of its appearance, many people don’t realize that it’s invasive, so they’ll leave it alone. But it’s incredibly fast-growing and will take over virtually anything in its path.”
Left unchecked, it can even kill trees by wrapping tightly around trunks and cutting into them over time. It can also live up to 50 years and thrive in a wide range of environments.
Most homeowners get rid of Chinese wisteria by cutting the vines down to ground level. After that, “You can remove it by the roots, which is a bit easier to do outside of the growing season, or you can try a chemical approach of applying undiluted glyphosate to it, which is what a majority of people end up doing,” Corcoran says.
If you love the look of wisteria, plant American Wisteria (Wisteria frutescens) instead: it's non-invasive and just as beautiful.
Nicholas Galitzine's Extreme 'Masters of the Universe' Workout Reveals What It Really Takes to Play He-Man
Nicholas Galitzine is a lot of things: a rom-com heartthrob, a Golden Globe contender, a guy who starred opposite Anne Hathaway. What he was not, going into Masters of the Universe, was the most physically imposing actor in any room. He spent the better part of a year fixing that.
In a new interview with Fandango's Big Ticket podcast, Galitzine opened up about what it actually took to transform his body into He-Man's. The details are not for the faint of heart. 'There were moments where I would be fasted for 18 hours and doing a three-hour weight session while fasted and then going and doing stunts right after,' he said. 'It would test your resolve.' He paused, then added with a laugh, 'It kind of built character in a real way.'
Galitzine worked under celebrity trainer David Kingsbury, who has put Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth, and Ryan Reynolds through their paces for superhero roles. According to Men's Journal, Galitzine consumed around 4,000 calories a day during the bulk phase before transitioning into a leaner cutting period. He told Entertainment Weekly the process pushed him 'physically and mentally' beyond what he had expected going in. 'The person who started the process was nowhere near ready, both physically and emotionally, to embody this larger-than-life hero,' he told Fandango. 'So I loved the process of kind of suffering for the role.' Director Travis Knight recalled seeing Galitzine after months of training and being floored. 'I couldn't believe how much he had changed,' Knight said. 'It looks like a totally different dude.'
Co-star Camila Mendes, who plays Teela, started her own training in September 2024, months before cameras rolled. She and Galitzine both acknowledged in the interview that they came to He-Man as children of the '90s who knew the franchise mainly through internet memes, not as die-hard fans of the original 1983 cartoon. For director Knight, however, this project was something he had wanted to make for decades. He grew up on the animated series and came to it as a true believer in what Eternia could look like on a modern screen.
The Masters of the Universe movie is currently among the most anticipated releases of the summer, tracking alongside The Mandalorian & Grogu and The Devil Wears Prada 2 in audience attention metrics. It opens June 5 from Amazon MGM Studios. The cast also includes Jared Leto as Skeletor, Idris Elba as Man-At-Arms, and Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn.
Galitzine was candid that the physique was never something he intended to maintain. 'This isn't something I'd be keen to do or maintain all year round,' he told People. The hard part, it seems, was always going to be the transformation itself, and if the results are anything like what Travis Knight saw on set, fans of a certain age are in for something that looks very much like their childhood made real.

1966 Rock Force That Changed Guitar Music Forever Is Returning 60 Years Later
One of the most influential partnerships in rock history is getting a new tribute 60 years after it helped transform the sound of modern music.
Marshall has announced a new Marshall x Hendrix 60th Anniversary Collection celebrating six decades since Jimi Hendrix first plugged into a Marshall amplifier in 1966, a moment the company says helped create “an unstoppable creative force.”

The limited-edition collection includes a redesigned Acton III Bluetooth speaker, a 1959 JMH Half Stack amplifier setup and a special Hendrix-inspired Fuzz Face distortion pedal. The products draw heavily from Hendrix’s psychedelic visual style and the towering guitar sound that helped define late-1960s rock music.
Marshall
“Marshall built the amps, Hendrix made them scream,” the company said in announcing the collection.
The partnership between Hendrix and Marshall became one of the defining images of classic rock. From the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 to Woodstock in 1969, Hendrix’s massive Marshall stacks became almost as iconic as the guitarist himself, helping create the explosive distortion-heavy sound that reshaped rock guitar forever.

According to Marshall, the new collection was inspired not only by Hendrix’s music but also by his fashion, stage presence and fascination with science fiction and space imagery. The special-edition speaker features crushed velvet finishes, purple lighting and silver detailing designed to reflect Hendrix’s “cosmic aesthetic.”
“From his fashion to his lyrics and of course, his music, there are so many different stories we could tell when it comes to Hendrix,” said Emma Rydahl, Senior Industrial Designer at Marshall Group. “We spent a lot of time adjusting the final design to get it just right across the whole collection.”
The collection also includes a recreated version of Hendrix’s famed amplifier setup, featuring the 1959 Handwired Head and matching 4x12 cabinet designed to deliver the same high-gain tones heard throughout Hendrix’s groundbreaking performances and recordings.

Marshall also released a new promotional film tied to the anniversary collection featuring electrifying guitarist Zach Person, who travels to Hendrix’s hometown of Seattle before testing the recreated 1959 JMH Half Stack. According to the company, the film follows Person as he explores the roots of Hendrix’s legacy while putting the amplifier through the same kinds of soaring, distortion-heavy tones that helped make Hendrix one of the most influential guitarists in rock history.
Marshall co-founder Terry Marshall reflected on how closely the company’s rise became tied to Hendrix’s meteoric fame during the late 1960s.
“Jimi was a formidable musician, a real force of nature,” Marshall said. “He took everything to a new level and carried everybody with him.”

“There’s no doubt that we grew with him and his fame,” he continued. “The rest is history as they say.”
The anniversary collection arrives as Hendrix’s legacy continues to influence generations of guitarists more than 50 years after his death. Widely considered one of the greatest guitar players in rock history, Hendrix helped push amplification, distortion and live performance into entirely new territory during his brief but revolutionary career.
The Marshall x Hendrix 60th Anniversary Collection is available beginning May 12 through Marshall’s website, with select retail availability beginning May 14.

Eva Longoria’s 'Searching For' Series Captures Exactly How Women Over 50 Want to Travel Now
Eva Longoria is 51 years old, on the cover of AARP The Magazine, and is now, in part, calling Spain her home base. Not visiting Spain—actually building a life there, adopting the flow of a neighborhood and shopping at the local market. Her newest CNN travelogue, Searching for France, feels like a mission statement. The word "searching" implies patience and time; it’s a willingness to land without having the entire itinerary figured out.
It turns out she isn’t an outlier—she’s the face of a demographic that is finally prioritizing its own joy. Women over 50 are the fastest-growing demographic in solo travel, and they are staying longer and spending more. According to new research from AdventureWomen, solo female travelers aged 35 to 75 are planning to spend an average of $18,000 per trip in 2026. This isn't just a leisure activity; it’s a fundamental shift in the travel industry.
The AARP 2026 Travel Trends report reinforces this, noting that 64% of adults over 50 plan to travel this year, with a staggering 86% naming travel as one of their top three priorities. This group isn't slowing down; they’re just finished rushing. Most women in their 50s and 60s have spent decades traveling on someone else's clock—school breaks, corporate schedules or vacations built entirely around what the kids wanted. Now, there is finally room to ask: what do I actually want from this trip?
Related: Eva Longoria, 51, Proves the Teenie Weenie Black Bikini Has No Age Limit
For many, the answer looks like the spirit of what Longoria is doing. It’s choosing a destination and settling in. It’s renting an apartment over a hotel so there’s a kitchen and a neighborhood. It’s what Forbes identifies as the rise of "Skillcations"—taking a cooking class in Italy or a painting workshop in France because you genuinely want the skill, not because it was on a "Top 10" list.
The logistics are shifting to match this mindset. AARP notes that international travel intent is on the rise, and AAAreports that travelers are increasingly focused on "milestone" trips, using loyalty points and miles accumulated over years to fund these major hauls. There is also a major focus on mobility; roughly 73% of solo female travelers now prefer carry-on only luggage to maintain independence and ease while navigating multi-city itineraries.
Related: Lisbon Is the Perfect European Escape for Solo Women Over 50
There's an emotional shift happening that often gets missed in trend reports. This demographic is traveling with a clearer sense of the goal. It isn't about Instagram proof or a dinner party story. It’s about a version of themselves they’ve been meaning to meet. Longoria said it best: “I have so much ahead of me.” That sentence carries a different weight at 51 than at 31. It’s the specific confidence of someone who has finally stopped waiting for permission to take up space in the world.
France rewards this slowness. Smaller cities like Lyon, Bordeaux, or the villages in Provence offer a manageable scale that Paris doesn't always provide. The daily afternoon pause and the long lunches give travelers a specific kind of permission to exhale. But the destination is almost secondary to the traveler herself.
She is done with trips that leave her exhausted. She wants to come home having actually absorbed somewhere, not just passed through it. She’s willing to spend real money on real experiences and less on souvenirs she’ll forget. She’s likely traveling with a close friend or solo—and as the data shows, she is deeply okay with that.
For decades, travel was a series of compromises. Now, a new "Searching for…" mindset has taken over—a willingness to land in a place, stay a while and prioritize personal fulfillment over a checklist. It’s the difference between traveling to fulfill an obligation and traveling to fulfill oneself.
As Longoria tells Forbes, “Over the past 20 years, my career as an actor has brought me to France time and again. It’s my home away from home. But those trips were more about work than joie de vivre. Now I want something deeper. An adventure. So I’m setting out to really experience France, to savor its world-celebrated cuisine, to explore the country's rich history.”
Before you plan your next trip, it’s worth asking: what would your version of Searching for France look like? It doesn’t have to be France. It just has to be somewhere you’ve been meaning to actually go—and this time, stay a while.

The Milky Way Is Going To Be Its Most Visible This Week—Here’s How To Catch It
Here's the thing about the Milky Way: you can't just look up any night and expect to see it stretching across the sky. There's a specific window to catch its glowing core—and it's closing soon. If you want to witness the celestial core of our galaxy before summer steals the show, mid-May is your moment.
The Best Time of Year to See the Milky WayAccording to Space.com, from February to October, our planet's position in space allows clear views of the galaxy's luminous heart, a window astronomers refer to as "Core Season." But not all months are created equal. May offers a longer viewing window than June because the new moon on May 16 provides darker skies right when the nights are still long enough—before the summer solstice pushes twilight further into your stargazing hours.
Your best window is between midnight and sunrise, when the center climbs highest above the southern horizon. Any light—whether it's moonlight or city lights—will wash out the details you're after, so for the best views, you’ll want to drive out to where there’s little to no light pollution.
Where to Look (And How to Get There)You probably won’t be able to see it from your backyard in the suburbs. Minimal light pollution is essential—city glow will erase the faint dust clouds and dim stars from your view. Resources like DarkSky.org can help you find the best areas of darkness near you. National parks tend to make good viewing spots since they're removed from urban development.
@flyandfotoWhen can you see the Milky Way in the United States? The Milky Way core is visible from April through October, with peak visibility from June through August. But season alone isn’t enough. To actually see the Milky Way clearly, you need: • Dark skies away from city light pollution • A new moon or low moon phase • Clear weather • The right time of night In April, the core rises much later in the night. If you’re outside at 9pm, you won’t see it because it hasn’t risen yet. And a new moon in Los Angeles will still look like Los Angeles. Light pollution washes the Milky Way out. Planning around location, moon phase, and core rise time is what makes the difference between “I missed it” and a visible Milky Way core. Save this for your next stargazing trip. We’re releasing a free Milky Way planning guide that breaks down core rise times by month, moon phases, and how to choose the right location. Join the waitlist in our bio. Follow us for practical Milky Way and Northern Lights planning tips. #milkyway #milkywayphotography #stargazing #darksky #astrophotography
♬ original sound - Kasey & Jason 🌌 Night SkiesOnce you're there, face south. Looking south, you'll trace the core's path through Aquila, Scutum, Sagittarius, and Scorpius as it lowers toward the horizon. You'll see clusters of stars, hazy clouds of interstellar dust, and that unmistakable glow that reminds you just how vast our galaxy really is.
If you want to photograph it, be sure to bring a camera with manual settings, a wide-angle lens, a tripod, and patience. Just remember, the so-called "Core Season" won’t come back around for another eight months, so if you have your heart set on spying the Milky Way, be sure to set an alarm.
Read With Jenna Book Club Pick Named Among Most Banned Novels in the U.S.
Jenna Bush Hager’s favorite novel, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, is one of the most frequently banned books in the United States.
According to the American Library Association, the 1970 novel has experienced 306 documented censorship attempts at U.S. schools, libraries and universities, with 84 instances of banning. The Bluest Eye was also included on PEN America’s list of books banned in 12 or more school districts during the 2024-2025 school year.
Bush Hager, 44, selected Morrison’s debut novel as her December 2020 Read With Jenna book club pick. The month prior, she revealed in a Today show article that she first read the book for an assignment in her sophomore English class at her Texas high school.
“Thematically, I had never read anything quite like this,” she recalled. “It was a book that talked about adult subjects but the underlying themes of racism, otherness and feeling not good enough were things that my classmates were dealing with, particularly my classmates of color. It was the first book that really opened my eyes to how literature can create understanding and take you into worlds you don’t know.”
Bush Hager then delved into the significance of getting to read The Bluest Eye despite the novel being restricted from students at other schools in her home state.
“My mom [Laura Bush] being a librarian, we talked often as kids about books that were banned,” she explained. “At the time I read it, The Bluest Eye was prohibited across some Texas schools. Knowing that some kids weren’t even allowed to read this made it an even more special treasure of a book.”
As The Bluest Eye celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020, Bush Hager noted that the book “still holds incredible power to spark current conversations. While this fact is heartbreaking, it also shows how complicated and complex some of these themes are.”
While recommending it to her book club readers, Bush Hager expected her own perspective to shift as she reread The Bluest Eye, sharing, “I can’t wait to see how adulthood and now being in my late 30s will make this novel resonate in a different way.”
She concluded, “Of course, if you are reading for the first time, I hope you marvel at the beauty of Toni Morrison’s writing the way I did when I first picked up a copy. She is my favorite author of all time, and I am honored to be recommending her book to this special group of readers.”
Bush Hager later confirmed in a Goodreads Q&A that The Bluest Eye remains her “favorite novel.”
“This is a book I have read multiple times,” she wrote. “Each time I have been moved and changed by the story of Pecola Breedlove.”
The Bluest Eye follows Pecola, an 11-year-old Black girl growing up in Ohio following the Great Depression. After facing criticism for her dark skin, she longs for the blue eyes she associates with America’s adoration of white children. The book’s themes of racism, sexual abuse and LGBTQIA+ representation—as well as false claims of illegal obscenity for minors—have fueled the book ban efforts against it in the U.S.
Morrison—who died in August 2019 from complications of pneumonia at age 88—spoke out against censorship in 2009’s Burn This Book, writing, “Efforts to censor, starve, regulate and annihilate us are clear signs that something important has taken place.”

22 Years Ago Today, This ‘Saved by the Bell’ Star’s Wife Filed to End Their 2-Week Marriage
It seemed like a match made in heaven when the stud from Saved by the Bell married the "Doritos Girl." But just two weeks after the couple's wedding, they ended their marriage. Of course, we're talking about Mario Lopez and Ali Landry, who tied the knot 22 years ago—and split shortly thereafter.
The romantic Mexico wedding was still fresh in the minds of many when news broke that Landry had filed for an annulment.
"He’s cheated on her for several years, and she just found out last week," a source close to Landry told People magazine at the time. "They never had a honeymoon, and he was out at a club last week without his wife."
Lopez and Landry had been together for six years before exchanging vows at Las Alamandas resort outside Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. And while everything may have seemed perfect on the outside, Lopez and Landry's union was doomed from the start.
"Not even a week after, I found out that it was, like, a Tiger Woods situation," Landry told Lacey Leone McLaughlin on the Unfolding Leadership podcast in 2022. "It was, you know, cheating across the board, with some women for one year, some women for two years."
"It was devastating," she continued. "And I made a commitment that moving forward, I was gonna take the blinders off, number one. And I was gonna walk through, you know, my life in full awareness and really being aware of my choices, and those choices were gonna represent who I was as a person. And with everything. Not just with the person that I chose but also with my career. And that was the biggest shift in my life."
Everything worked out for Lopez and Landry—separately—however.
"I look back on that situation, which was horrible, and I thank God every single day, because it changed me as a woman. It changed the way… I walk through this world, 100 percent," Landry said. "I am so much better because that happened. I am forever grateful for that."
Landry went on to find love with film director Alejandro Gómez Monteverde, whom she married in 2006, and the couple has three kids together. As for Lopez, he married Courtney Mazza in 2012, and they also have three children.
