"Words are understood via association for dogs," says Annie-Mae Levy, CFBA, professional dog trainer at Woofz, a puppy and dog training app." This means that most words are predictive of what’s going to happen next. Plus, saying words with stern or angry tone signals to a dog that something unpleasant might be about to occur, often, whereas a high-pitched baby talk kind of tone usually will make them feel excited and happy."

When your dog feels uncomfortable when they hear you say something, they will try to let you know they are stressed, though pet owners can unintentionally miss their cues. "Body language is a great indicator of how your dog is feeling," Levy explains. "For example, when you are speaking to them, you want to see your dog readily coming over to you and be engaged by wagging its tail, offering eye contact and showing loose, fluid body language. Those are signs your dog feels safe." What are some signs your dog doesn't feel safe? Levvy adds if your dog tenses up, avoids eye contact, lowers its ears, or retreats, these behaviors indicate that your dog feels uneasy, stressed, or unsafe. Recognizing these signals is key to understanding dog behavior, reducing dog anxiety, and building a stronger bond through positive communication. It's important to understand that there are words that make dogs feel unsafe so that you can avoid using them. Some of the phrases dogs hate hearing, provided by our pet expert, may surprise you. See what they are below!

1. “Bye”

Your dog loves being around you so when they hear you say "bye" when you leave for work or run an errand, it can make them feel unsafe because they associate it with you leaving them. So, while this common word people say to their pets may make you sad to say, it can make some pups feel uncomfortable and uneasy, especially if they have separation anxiety.

"Leaving cues can be something dogs are very sensitive to," Levy notes. "If ‘bye’ signals that you’re going out for a couple of hours, and your dog has not been trained to cope with this, hearing ‘bye’ might trigger a flood of anxiety."

With consistent, calm routines and positive reinforcement, you can help your dog feel secure even when you leave. Pairing goodbyes with treats, toys, or gentle praise teaches your pup that departures are safe, reducing dog anxiety and strengthening trust. Over time, your dog will associate leaving cues like “bye” with safety and calm, rather than fear or stress.

2."No"

When it comes to words that make dogs feel unsafe, this is one of them. Dogs generally don't like the word "no." But Levy shares that screaming "no" can scare dogs even more.

"A loud and sudden 'no’ can feel alarming and unpredictable for a dog who is then likely anticipating a negative consequence to occur," Levy explains.

How can you make your dog feel safe instead? By replacing fear-based commands with specific, gentle guidance, you reduce dog anxiety, build trust, and encourage confident, safe behavior. "In these situations, giving an alternative direction, such as ‘bed,' gives your dog a clear behavior they can fall back on instead," says Levvy.

3. "Crate"

Crates can be a Zen den for dogs. However, when they're used as punishment, saying "crate" becomes one of the words that make dogs feel unsafe. "Most of us want the dog to feel as if the crate is a safe space for them, a den to go to when they want to rest or get away from the household," Levy explains. "If we start sending the dog here when we're angry, this can build some conflict and start making them view this space more negatively."

Using their crate as a punishment can increase dog anxiety, disrupt trust, and confuse your pup about what the space is really for. Understanding dog behavior and practicing positive dog communication helps ensure that the crate remains a safe, comforting environment instead of a source of stress.

4. "Bad Dog"

While you might think saying “bad dog” is an effective way to discourage unwanted behavior—like eating something off the floor—Levy explains that it can actually make dogs feel unsafe and anxious.

"When you say ‘bad,’ your dog can’t understand what they did wrong or how to fix it. This uncertainty can trigger dog anxiety and stress because they feel confused and unsafe in trying to please you," she notes.

Instead, using a clear cue like “leave it” or “place” gives your dog the guidance they need to correct their behavior. Focusing on positive dog communication and specific instructions helps your pup feel secure, understand expectations, and build trust in their relationship with you.

5. "Come"

The word “come” isn’t inherently bad—it’s actually an important cue to call your dog to safety. However, Levy explains that many pet parents unintentionally make this word a source of stress and confusion, which can make dogs feel unsafe or anxious.

"If ‘come’ starts to predict the end of something enjoyable, like leaving the dog park—or worse, being grabbed or restrained—it’s no surprise that dogs may begin to hesitate or resist recalling to their owners," Levy notes. "This creates dog anxiety because your pup starts associating the word with negative experiences rather than safety and fun."

To keep the come cue positive, pair it with food, toys, or praise whenever possible, and avoid shouting it in anger. Focusing on positive dog communication ensures your dog understands that responding to “come” is safe, rewarding, and builds trust rather than stress.

6. "It’s OK"

It might surprise you to see this phrase among the words that make dogs feel unsafe. Levy notes that many pet parents say “It’s OK” in a sing-songy voice with the best intentions—to soothe—but it can often have the opposite effect.

"If ‘It’s OK’ is repeated incessantly when your dog is distressed, they can start to associate these words with feelings of panic, searching for the stressful trigger rather than calming down," Levy explains. This is a subtle but important aspect of dog behavior that many owners overlook, showing how even comforting words can unintentionally trigger dog anxiety.

That doesn't mean you can never use this one on your dog. You just need to know your pet and pick your spots. "For dogs who are already feeling bad, repeating, 'It's OK,' calmly and slowly, is absolutely fine and might be comforting, but avoid saying this in a way that might make it sound as if you are anxious too," Levy says.

7. "Why?"

If your dog stole your socks while you were at work, try to avoid going up to them and using the word “why?” Even though you’re probably curious about their action, this word can make dogs feel unsafe or anxious, often because of the tone you use when saying it.

"When some time has passed between when your dog did something ‘naughty’ and you realizing what happened, your dog will be unable to connect your tone and bad mood with their behavior," Levy explains. This is an important aspect of dog behavior that many pet owners overlook.

Levy notes that dogs don’t even follow the “5-second rule” in their own minds. "Dogs have about a two-second memory for building associations, so when we scold them long after the behavior, it can be very confusing and stressful," she adds. Using words like “why?” in this way can unintentionally trigger dog anxiety and miscommunication, which is why understanding dog communication cues is essential for keeping your pup feeling safe and secure.

But while the British Shorthair is happy to do its own thing, they also like to play and be active in short bursts. Another bonus? They are great with kids and other pets, too!

Though, it's hard to tell what you’ll get on the lap cat front if you get one of these felines. Some Scottish Folds prefer to cozy up on you, while others would rather hang nearby. However, if you prefer a lap cat, Hunt suggests adding a blanket to your lap to encourage your pet to curl up. She adds that Scottish Folds do love to be around people though. In fact, they get so attached that they may get separation anxiety when they’re left alone for too long. But, if you have a bustling household, that shouldn't be an issue.

"The Russian Blue is so chill that it may seem a little aloof at first," according to Warner. "But this indoor grey cat is incredibly affectionate once it bonds with people." The Russian Blue is another grey at breed that is super playful and loving. Plus, they are even easy to groom—just brush them once or twice a week and you’ll be good.

Once you and your Russian Blue bond, Warner says you may find that they’re always around. In addition, these grey felines get along well with kids and even other pets, just in case you want to build up your crew. They’re also happy to hang at home alone for those times when you and the family need to be out and can't bring them along.

Are blue Persian cats grey Persian cats? They are! And if you come across one, you'll see that they are total showstoppers thanks to their big silver coats. But this fluffy grey cat also has a personality that makes it an excellent fit for families. “They are known for being calm, sweet, lower-energy cats that prefer to lounge,” Hunt says. 

But while this is a low-energy cat, it still has plenty of affection to dish out. “They are affectionate cats, often preferring to sleep with their owner and sit in their owner’s lap,” Hunt says. “I’ve known owners who refer to their Persian as a ‘sweet floof,’ which is an excellent description.” Persians don’t make a lot of noise, either, just in case you prefer to maintain a quieter household.

Another great grey cat to consider are Nebelungs. They actually share a family history with the Russian Blue breed, but were specially bred to create a medium-haired cat with thick fur. “They are known to be calm, quiet and gentle cats, so they make a good family pet,” Hunt.

She praises this grey cat breed’s affectionate and loyal nature with their owners. “Some Nebelungs will follow the owner through the house and love to snuggle, but others are more aloof and instead prefer to be nearby rather than touching their owners,” Hunt says. Nebelungs are known for their high intelligence, Hunt points out. They also love to be playful—a nice personality trait for families with kids.

What's one of the best grey cat breeds for families? The Chartreux! They are known for their gorgeous pumpkin-colored eyes, but there’s so much more to this pretty grey cat than that. “Chartreux cats are often referred to as serene, gentle and subtly affectionate,” Warner says. "They are often highly devoted to their family, but not necessarily a cat that requires a lot of attention or wants to be the center of attention.” 

Instead, this indoor grey cat breed likes to form very close relationships with its people. “They are also considered as a highly perceptive and intelligent cat, and they always appear to observe and think before acting,” Warner says. While Chartreux cats can be playful, too, Warner says their silliness tends to be less intense than that of other breeds. "Ultimately, the Chartreux is often the easygoing, quietly companionable cat,” Warner says.

The Korat has a sweet, heart-shaped face that’s hard to resist. “This calm silver-colored cat is appreciated for its loving and family-friendly nature,” Warner says. "When it comes to their personality, they can be sensitive, and tend to develop very strong relationships with their owners as a result as well."

Warner calls this type of grey cat “gentle and loving,” making them a great fit for kids. But grey Korat cats are super smart, too. “Korats are generally described as intelligent and emotionally-engaged pets,” Warner says. “They thrive in homes where they feel safe and secure.”

If you are someone who likes to cuddle, you're in luck because these grey companions are definitely lap cats, so they will happily climb into your arms or lap for a snuggle.

In the Canadian town of Saskatoon, rabbits are roaming the streets. While it may seem like the city has been overtaken by a pack of wild rabbits, these loose bunnies are actually former pet rabbits released by their humans. A local rescue called River Haze Street Rabbit Rescue says it sees an influx of loose rabbits every spring, calling the annual incident "very sad."

Post-Easter, some people who take in a baby rabbit as an in-home Easter bunny sometimes rethink their choice. Seeing wild rabbits in the city’s parks and wooded areas, some mistakenly believe their pets can survive in the wild if they decide they no longer want them at home.

Domesticated rabbits are very different from wild rabbits and cannot survive the elements the way their wild counterparts can. Not only is it dangerous to release domesticated rabbits into the wild, but overpopulation can also occur when domestic animals are abandoned.

Several Vancouver parks are overrun with loose European rabbits, and parts of Alberta also report feral rabbit populations. While rabbits are cute to look at, feral populations can pose health risks to other animals and to humans who attempt to handle or feed them.

European rabbits can reproduce rapidly, with females capable of giving birth to up to 30 young in a single year.

So what’s the real reason so many pet rabbits are abandoned each spring? The influx is often linked to people deciding a baby rabbit will make a cute Easter gift for their children, only to realize they have taken on more responsibility than expected.

Rabbits are not low-maintenance pets. They need plenty of space to move around, and some breeds can grow to around 30 pounds when fully mature. In addition, rabbits require constant access to hay or grass to keep their digestive systems healthy. They also need regular mental stimulation to stay healthy.

If that sounds like a high-maintenance pet, it is. So rather than taking in a baby rabbit for Easter only to abandon it a week later, it is better to choose a stuffed bunny. Even better, a chocolate bunny does not need hay, grass, or companionship from other rabbits.

Some dogs see a flooded backyard and think, problem.

This Golden Retriever saw a flooded backyard and thought, "My time has come."

The video, filmed in Kenosha, Wisconsin, opens on a yard that has basically become one giant accidental splash zone after heavy rain. Then the dog gets let out and immediately goes full chaos goblin. No hesitation. No caution. No, “Let me check the depth first.” Just instant zoomies through the water like he has been waiting his whole life for management to install a private pool. The widely shared clip says David Schultz filmed it on April 4 after rain flooded the yard, and said, “Being the nut that he is, he got the zoomies immediately in the middle of the flood.”

A dog in Kenosha, Wisconsin, was delighted when recent flooding transformed his backyard into his own personal pool. Hilarious footage filmed by David Schultz on April 4 shows his dog whizzing around the waterlogged backyard. “We had a lot of rain and the backyard flooded,” Schultz told Storyful. “When I was about to let the dog out I said we should film this to see what he does.” “Being the nut that he is he got the zoomies immediately in the middle of the flood,” he added.

And honestly, that tracks.

This is not polite splashing.

This is full emotional support swamp behavior.

He tears across the yard with the kind of joy only a Golden Retriever can pull off, as if the universe finally delivered the weird little water park he knew he deserved. It is one of those videos where the setup is already funny, but the dog’s commitment somehow makes it even better. He is not adapting to the flood. He is celebrating it. 

The commenters understood the assignment, too. One person wrote, “Goldfish mode activated.” Another said, “What dog? All I see is a land fish 🧐.” Both are correct. This is not normal backyard behavior anymore. This pup has crossed over into a new category of being, somewhere between Retriever and decorative pond creature.

What makes the whole clip work so well is that it feels like such a perfect Golden Retriever response to inconvenience. A soggy yard is supposed to be annoying. Messy. A whole problem. But this dog looks at the same situation and sees luxury. Adventure. Opportunity. If optimism had fur and terrible impulse control, it would look exactly like this.

And truly, that is why people love dogs so much. They can turn the dumbest possible moment into something delightful. This Golden did not just find joy in a flooded yard. He attacked joy at full speed.

Floodwater Is Funny Until It Isn’t

As hilarious as this is, flooded yards are not always safe for dogs. The AKC warns that floodwater can contain bacteria, parasites, chemicals, sharp debris, and hidden hazards, and advises pet parents not to let dogs drink it and to rinse them off if they get into it. 

So yes, the zoomies are incredible. But if your dog turns into a water-loving maniac after a storm, it is smart to supervise closely, keep the splash session brief, and clean them up afterward.

"Finally, a family member smaller than Dot," the sweet video is captioned in part, and I'm sure that's why Dottie is so enamored! There aren't many others smaller than her!

Nova is one of four little ones whose parents are hibernating, but she's in good paws with her doggy siblings. The way Dottie is so gentle and kind with the baby Tortoise is helping teach confidence, kindness, and most of all, love!

Most days, the Brussels Griffon (who has dwarfism) is usually doing something sassy, spicy, feisty, or just plain hilarious. Whether it's her funny reactions, cute outfits, or being an adorable internet star, the 6-year-old pup is always in charge.

But the day she first met an 11-day Tortoise hatchling, her whole life changed. Dottie's initial response to the intro was to immediately give kisses, and that's 100% Dottie. She's like a Sour Patch Kid: sour one minute, but so sweet the next! I think the newcomers will soon understand how awesome their pup sister truly is!

As adorable as Dottie is with the baby, experts say dogs and Tortoises aren't usually the best match for a few reasons, but mostly because it can end with injuries. The Dachshunds have officially taken over. It is their world, and we are just living in it.

The car ride started with a heavy silence and a downward gaze.

One dog posted in Reddit's r/Awwww subreddit thought he was going back to the shelter, and he sat quietly in the front seat. His eyes looked like he was ready to cry, and his entire body seemed to scream, “Are we going back?” He didn’t make a single sound.

Dog’s 'Razzle Dazzle' Leaves Cat Completely Confused

“Cat: ‘just fight, why do you dance?’,” u/missprolqui jokingly captioned their post, which has garnered dozens of responses and loads of attention since first uploading. 

“If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with BS,” one viewer chimed in. 

The video starts with the two animals face to face, seemingly waiting for the other to make the first move. As the dog’s tail wags, the cat slowly lifts its right paw, and when the dog flinches, the cat suddenly lunges. The two tussle for a second before separating, and that’s where the chaos begins.

As the dog seems to lunge in for a counterattack, instead, it pulls a completely unexpected move and starts spinning in circles. The cat stands still and watches in confusion as the dog makes a couple quick circles, lunges at the cat, makes a couple more quick circles and lunges again, repeating the process.

“It's the old razzle dazzle,” one viewer wrote. “Never let them know your next move, I guess..” another added.

“Dog uses confusion successfully,” a third fan chimed in, while another added, “When your opponent takes the fight in a completely unexpected direction.”

A Perfect Example of Dogs and Cats at Play

As the video plays out, the same pattern continues, with the two pets occasionally locked in arms for a brief second before the pup resorts back to spinning and the cat sits and watches in disbelief. After about a minute, the dog starts to lose interest, retreats under the dinner table and curls up beneath a chair, leaving the cat to wonder, “what the heck just happened?”

Dogs and cats may look like they’re fighting, but a lot of the time it’s just how they play with each other, especially in households where they are already familiar with one another. And while their play styles can differ in many ways, with dogs being loud and physical while cats are quieter and more calculated, this usually leads to some pretty hilarious confusion between the two.

Great Danes are known as "gentle giants" for good reason, they are patient, affectionate, and bond deeply with their family. They'd rather be inside with family than anywhere else in the world. They follow you room to room and they lean against your legs with their full weight. They have no idea that they're enormous.

The devestating truth is that their average lifespan runs between six and eight years—significantly shorter than most breeds. Anyone who loves a Great Dane (and other big dogs) knows the time togehter feels both too short and completely unforgettable.

Duke's family gave him one last birthday celebration. One last song. One last precious moment of being surrounded by complete and unconditional love.

The grief of losing a dog is heartbreakingly real. The bond was real. And Duke was loved every single day he was here.

My dogs are always on the hunt for food. Whether they are begging at the dinner table or searching for scraps on the floor, my Dachshund and my Pug mix throw their morals and manners out the window when it comes to finding any little crumb they uncover. They don't care who the tidbit belongs to or where it came from — any morsel of food is considered fair game.

Norman the Bulldog may have the same mindset regarding meals. His mom walked in on a trail of dog kibble strewn about the floor that was clearly stolen, and the clues all led to him being the culprit.

The evidence was clear-cut and unrefutable. A wide trail of dog food was scattered across the floor. Even the scooping cup was carelessly tossed aside during the kibble caper, with the thief showing no apparent concern over covering their tracks.

A Golden Retriever mix was lying on the floor, minding his own business and just as confused about the robbery as his mom. Making sure to record all the details to solve the hasty heist, the dogs' sitter went over the sequence of events.

"Ok, so there was a bag of dog food right there — I don't know who did it," Norman's dog sitter said, pointing to one corner of the room. The camera panned along the pathway of kibble, which ended at Norman's crate. "I'm guessing it was this guy."

Norman Had No Regrets

A trail of morsels led to Norman, who was chilling in his crate with a huge open bag of dog food. The crafty canine was mid-chew when the sitter called him out on his thievery. Yet the Bulldog barely blinked an eye and didn't seem at all remorseful.

Followers got a kick out of Norman's cavalier attitude and brazen burglary of the family's kibble stash.

"And he’s still munching! No shame," one remarked.

"Not even sorry," another noted.

"Norman wants you to know he still expects dinner to be served at it’s regular time," a follower pointed out.

"I think the other dog set Norman up. He is looking way too chill," someone suggested.

Norman's parents should put the dog food in a locked cabinet from now on to prevent any future thefts.

Raising young is not easy for anyone. It doesn't matter if you're human or not: there are going to be times when your babies get on your nerves, and that's fine. It seems like their singular mission is to do things that get under your skin sometimes.

Pearl's Ragdolls are all seasoned veterans when it comes to dealing with the babies, don't worry. Their kittens are raised in-house: they all live together. There's also a senior Golden Retriever and a couple of human kids! These are some very well-rounded kittens.

Unicorn is part of the newest batch of kittens, and she's been one of the most... Unique so far. She loves to attack everyone, from her mom and siblings to her human caretaker, Pearl. She goes after paws, tails, toes, and anything else she can pounce on. She's a skilled huntress!

Luckily, Unicorn's mom doesn't really care. Her tail is fluffy enough that she hardly feels anything, and she's so used to it by this point! All of her kittens have done the same thing. She's just glad they have something fun to do. When they're not chasing tails, they're fashion models!

If you're thinking about getting a kitten, you need to be prepared for shenanigans like these. Kittens aren't trying to hurt you when they do things like this! They're just exploring the world, and they're trying to hone their hunting instincts.

Even though this kind of behavior is normal, you should definitely work on correcting it as soon as it appears. Fingers, toes, and other cats' body parts aren't toys! Just gently redirect them with toys or another activity. Eventually, they'll learn what's appropriate!

I can't be the only kid who absolutely dreaded picture day. I hated everything about it, and every year, I was actively trying to skip it. Unfortunately, most schools I went to made us carry our school IDs around. There was no getting out of it!

Puppy the Black Cockatoo is so precious. I love everything about him, including his super unique coloring! Black Cockatoos are pretty uncommon, but they're just as friendly as any other type of Cockatoo.

Puppy proves that every day on TikTok, though he's also proven that he can be kind of intimidating. He has a very impressive wingspan, and when he wants to, he can take off quickly enough to be absolutely jaw-dropping. His mom loves to put it in slow-motion:

When he's not smiling, he's a little scary! Even so, I would definitely love to have a bird like this. He's been with his mom since he was a baby, and he trusts her entirely. She can get away with a lot, which has helped him go so viral!

Puppy is full-grown. Black Cockatoos get a little bigger than Umbrella or Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos, which are what most people keep as pets. She seriously has like, a goth guardian bird!

I feel like Puppy in this video disproves any evidence that birds can't smile, but I guess a cute enough bird will do that to you! It just really felt like he knew what he was doing!

Birds, unfortunately, do not smile as humans do. They do not have the facial muscles for it. If you see your bird "smiling," it's definitely just a coincidence. However, birds love to show their happiness in other ways, such as:

• Fluffing up the feathers on their crest.
• Nestling in to nap with you.
• Happily chattering whenever you walk by.
• Trying to preen you.

How Long Do Sea Otters Stay With Their Moms?

This is such a magical picture, seeing all these adorable families together in this little nursery where they all help take care of each other. But have you wondered how long they stay with their moms? Experts have the answer.

According to Shedd Aquarium, in the wild, otters tend to stay with their moms for around six months after they have developed the necessary survival skills, including finding their food and diving up to 250 feet deep for clams and other food. Otters show their babies how to use tools like rocks to open some food, and before they know it, they're ready to leave the nursery. 

We're so thankful that things like this exist in the real world, not just in the safe, happy spaces in our heads.
