For nearly three decades, Karen Hale has watched her mother live with breast cancer, an experience that has shaped her family’s understanding of the disease and the importance of medical research. Now, she and her husband, Rob Hale, are turning that deeply personal connection into a historic investment in finding better treatments.

The couple has committed $50 million to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), a gift the organization describes as the largest single donation ever made to breast cancer research.

For Karen, the decision is rooted in a family experience that began nearly 30 years ago, when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her mother’s longevity reflects the extraordinary progress researchers have made in understanding and treating the disease, but it also underscores the need for continued breakthroughs.

Announced on October 16, 2026, the donation will support research across five critical areas: breast cancer in younger women, metastatic disease, artificial intelligence, immunotherapy, and prevention.

The funding will also establish the Hale Family Collaborative of New England Investigators, connecting scientists at leading Boston-area institutions to encourage cooperation and accelerate discoveries. Another $11 million will go toward BCRF Ventures, a program designed to help promising scientific innovations move beyond the laboratory and into clinical development.

For Karen, who has served on BCRF’s board since 2019 and became co-chair in 2024, the organization’s work has already made a difference in her own life.

“Breast cancer has touched my family deeply,” Hale said in a statement. “Having more time with my mother as she lives with metastatic disease, and now having the power to potentially stave off a breast cancer diagnosis through an AI-based risk assessment—both a result of BCRF-funded research—has made this cause especially personal”

The Hales have supported the foundation for years. In 2024, they donated $10 million, and their philanthropic efforts earned them the organization’s inaugural Carolyn Lynch Humanitarian Award in 2017. Their latest contribution, however, represents an unprecedented commitment to advancing breast cancer research.

The couple hopes the investment will give scientists the resources to pursue discoveries that might otherwise remain out of reach, particularly when it comes to developing new treatments and improving early detection.

“The political landscape now is what it is,” Hale said in October. “We all understand it, and it’s unfortunate. You can’t take a project that’s been going on for years and stop it. You lose all of that research, and some of these projects have discoveries just within reach. So it’s just really important to make sure that the researchers feel comfortable and confident that they can continue their work.”

Rob Hale is the confounded and president of Granite Telecommunications, a Massachusetts-based company that provides communications services to businesses across the country. He previously founded Network Plus, a telecommunications company that went public in 1999. His success in the industry made him a billionaire, and together with his wife, Karen, the couple has used their fortune to support a wide range of charitable causes, particularly in healthcare and medical research.

The $50 million gift is hardly the couple’s first major charitable contribution. In 2025, the Hales donated $100 million to Boston Children’s Hospital to expand pediatric mental health care. They also joined Rob’s mother, Judy, in donating $50 million to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in 2021 for pancreatic cancer research. In 2022, the couple gave away $1 million every week, totaling $52 million, and in 2024, they celebrated Rob’s Boston Marathon finish by donating another $26.2 million to 72 charitable organizations.

For Karen Hale, the motivation behind the couple’s latest philanthropic gift remains deeply personal. Nearly 30 years after her mother’s diagnosis, the family is investing in a future where more patients have the opportunity to spend additional years with the people they love.

Larry Mathews opened up about his time on The Dick Van Dyke Show—and why he doesn’t get paid for reruns of the beloved 1960s sitcom that still airs on television today.

More than 60 years after making his debut as Ritchie Petrie on the hit CBS sitcom, Mathews, 71, shared that the series did not make him wealthy due to the way pay was structured in the early days of television. Ditto for his TV mom, Mary Tyler Moore, who was a main cast member on the show.

“Everybody thinks that we’re rich because we were on a really hit show,” Mathews told People magazine, adding that there was a “big misconception” about the cast’s earnings due to the show’s massive popularity years after it originally aired. “Yeah, [the show] made a lot of money, but we didn’t,” he added.

The actor acknowledged that he was paid for every episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show, 158 in all, but that residuals from reruns ended after five airings.

“The people that made the money off of [the show] were the people who owned it when it went into syndication,” Mathews said. “They would get the money for syndication, but the other actors, all of us, including Mary, by the way, we just got our five runs, and that was it.”

Mathews appeared on The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961 to 1966, playing the young son of Rob and Laura Petrie (Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore). In the years after the show ended, he went on to graduate from UCLA and work as an account executive, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Celebrity Net Worth lists Mathews’ net worth at $2 million in 2026, noting that after college he worked in the editorial departments for the 1980s TV series Soap, Benson and It’s a Living.

Mathews still has fond memories of his time on The Dick Van Dyke Show. During a recent appearance on the Tripping Over The Ottoman podcast, he said he was “very sad” when the series ended 60 years ago because the cast was a second family to him.

“I mean, keep in mind…I started when [I was] five,” he said. “And so absolutely, I was aware, and I was really emotional about it. And, you know, in the wrap party, I cried because I remembered that we weren’t going to be with each other.”

The vast majority of novels written in 1818 are no longer remembered by modern readers, but Mary Shelley’s Gothic sci-fi classic Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus is as popular as ever.

It’s so popular, in fact, that the publication Collider just ranked it No. 1 in its list of most acclaimed science fiction books ever written. Mary Shelley “created the archetypal mad scientist, the essence of every reckless nuclear researcher or rogue AI developer to follow,” writes Luc Haasbroek. “In this sense, Frankenstein is an enduring warning about the dangers of technological hubris.”

It’s no mystery why Frankenstein has been adapted into so many TV shows, movies, musicals and plays: it tells the definitive tale of human hubris in the modern age. For the past two hundred years mankind’s most brilliant thinkers have been inventing world-changing technology without fully anticipating its world-changing implications; Christopher Nolan’s recent historical drama Oppenheimer, for instance, features a protagonist whom Victor Frankenstein would certainly relate to well.

Perhaps the most underrated part of Frankenstein is how morally dubious its protagonist is allowed to be. Just like viewers might be exasperated by Dr. Oppenheimer spending so much time on a mass-killing device only to be devastated when it’s used for mass killing, readers may be frustrated with Dr. Frankenstein for dedicating his life to reanimating the dead only to instantly change his mind when his plan succeeds. It’s annoying, sure, but if the current AI boom is any indication it’s certainly true to life.

Mary Shelley Was Just 18 When She Wrote ‘Frankenstein,’ 20 When It Was Published

It’s a fun fact that’ll make any adult writer feel insecure about their age: Shelley wrote one of the most famous books of the 19th century entirely in her teen years.

Its publication date was January 1, 1818, and it was not universally beloved straight away. One reviewer at the British Critic, for instance, wrote about Shelley’s work, “The writer of it is, we understand, a female; this is an aggravation of that which is the prevailing fault of the novel; but if our authoress can forget the gentleness of her sex, it is no reason why we should; and we shall therefore dismiss the novel without further comment.”

As time went on and the consensus on Frankenstein grew increasingly positive, in turn rose the theories that Shelley was not the actual author of the book, that it was actually written by her husband Percy Shelley and/or one of the other male writers in her social circle at the time.

Although Percy did indeed appear to help out as an early reader/editor of her novel, these theories have never actually been proven. Her later novels, while never quite as popular as Frankenstein, were also good enough to prove that her first novel was well within her range of talent.

For Guillermo del Toro, the latest director to adapt Frankenstein to the big screen, the big appeal of Shelley’s novel was its existential horror.

“While reading the novel as a child, I was arrested by the epistolary form Shelley had chosen, because it felt so immediate,” del Toro wrote for the Atlantic. “I was overtaken by the Miltonian sense of abandonment, the absolute horror of a life without a reason. The tragedy of the tale was not dependent on evil. That’s the supreme pain of the novel—tragedy requires no villain.”

Del Toro explained further, “Just as [Edgar Allan] Poe will prefigure the ambiguities of psychiatry, Shelley utilizes the most cutting-edge science and philosophy to drive her existential discourse home. Galvanism, chemistry, and surgery provide the alibi for the monster to gain life, to arise and question all of us.”

Fans of The Princess Bride are well aware of the fact that there are seemingly endless moments in the movie that will leave you giggling, chuckling, and downright bellylaughing. Apparently, filming the flick was just as amusing. In fact, it was such a hilarious experience that Mandy Patinkin, 73, injured himself while laughing at Billy Crystal’s antics.

The story behind what went down came from fellow The Princess Bride cast member Carol Kane, 74, who talked to People at the Imperial Theatre in New York City on Wednesday, Oct. 21, while attending the opening of 78-year-old Crystal’s new Broadway show, 860.

After Kane called working on the classic 1987 movie directed by the late Rob Reiner a “complete dream,” she recalled that Crystal’s performance led to Patinkin unexpectedly breaking a bone.

The incident occurred during a memorable scene in which Patinkin’s character, Inigo Montoya, takes Westley (Cary Elwes) to a healer named Miracle Max, played by Crystal. Kane was also in the scene as Max’s no-nonsense and rather opinionated wife, Valerie.

“We were in London… and Billy was improvising up the wazoo, and it’s so funny,” Kane told People. “I don’t know if you’ve heard this story that, when Cary Elwes was ‘mostly dead,’ Mandy was laughing so hard that he broke a rib because he had to keep it in. Yeah, I swear to God. I mean, it’s so funny.”

The famous scene also featured André the Giant as Fezzik, while the film’s cast also included Robin Wright as Princess Buttercup, Wallace Shawn as Vizzini, Chris Sarandon as Prince Humperdinck, and Christopher Guest as Count Tyrone Rugen. That’s not to overlook Fred Savage as the grandson who is being told the timeless story by his grandfather, played by the late Peter Falk.

Molly Ringwald and her husband Piano Gianopoulos have kept their marriage strong for almost 20 years, and it’s all due to some very important rules they stick to. The Pretty in Pink star, who said “I do” to her spouse in 2007, revealed that when it comes to “taking care” of the relationship, communication is a major factor.

“It’s all work, but hopefully it pays off,” Ringwald also said, comparing a successful long-term relationship to a garden. “If you water it and fertilize it, and if you give it everything that it needs, I think if it’s the right person, it flourishes.”

Ringwald and Gianopoulos met online and started dating in the early 2000s, after the former separated from her first husband, Valéry Lameignère, to whom she was married from 1999 to 2002. They started off chatting about books with friends in an online literary salon and eventually met in person.

In 2011, Ringwald looked back on her first date with Gianopoulos, a trained martial artist, in an essay for Parade. Her future spouse ended up making her tzatziki with garlic for the special moment, and she found herself questioning whether it actually was a date. Luckily, it was, and the pair tied the knot in a private ceremony in 2007 and had their first child in October 2003, and their twins in July 2009.

Anna Sorokin, the fake German heiress better known as Anna Delvey, scammed Manhattan’s wealthy elite out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, eventually becoming the subject of the hit Netflix series Inventing Anna.

Between 2013 and 2017, the Russian-born con artist infiltrated New York high society by adopting a false persona, posing as a wealthy heiress with a multimillion-dollar trust fund.

During this time, she leveraged her fabricated wealth and social status by forging bank records and writing fraudulent checks, deceiving Manhattan’s elite and swindling hotels, banks and individuals out of approximately $275,000.

Meanwhile, she tried to secure a $22 million loan for her proposed private members’ club and contemporary art foundation, the Anna Delvey Foundation (ADF).

However, despite her undeniable charm and persuasive rhetoric, her elaborate schemes eventually unraveled, leading to her arrest in October 2017 in Los Angeles.

Sorokin was transferred to New York’s Rikers Island jail complex, where she awaited trial.

In her defense, her lawyer Todd Spodek pointed out that Sorokin never intended to commit a crime.

“In her world, this is what her social circle did,” the attorney told the jury, as cited by the BBC, adding, “Everyone’s life was perfectly curated for social media. People were fake. People were phoney. And money was made on hype alone.”

Netflix Paid Anna Sorokin a Reported $320,000 for Her Story

Sorokin’s story gained even more attention after New York Magazine published Jessica Pressler’s 2018 profile under the 2017 article headlined “Wannabe socialite busted for skipping out on pricey hotel bills”  detailing how she infiltrated and manipulated Manhattan’s wealthy social scene.

The story eventually caught Netflix’s attention and the streaming giant reportedly paid Sorokin $320,000 for the rights to adapt her life story.

Produced by Shondaland for Netflix, the deal includes the release of the miniseries Inventing Anna, which stars Julia Garner.

However, although Netflix paid for the rights to her life story, Sorokin couldn’t freely access the funds after New York State invoked its Son of Sam law in 2019, temporarily freezing the money to allow victims to pursue claims.

Following a month-long trial in April 2019, the jury determined that she is guilty of multiple offenses including grand larceny, attempted grand larceny and theft of services.

The charges included grand larceny, involving the theft of money or property, and theft of services, which involved obtaining services such as hotel accommodations without paying for them.

In January 2021, a judge ordered the funds unfrozen after arrangements were made to pay restitution and other obligations. Sorokin used $199,000 to repay victims, paid $24,000 in state fines and spent approximately $75,000 on legal fees.

After serving part of her sentence, Sorokin was released from state prison in February of the same year, after reportedly qualifying for early release for good behavior.

However, her release did not mean she was entirely free. She was detained by immigration authorities for overstaying her visa.

As part of her release conditions, she was required to remain at an approved residence and wear a GPS ankle monitor.

Sorokin has said she wants to remain in New York and is willing to endure house arrest while fighting deportation to Germany.

“There is evidence that demonstrates she would be deported from Germany to Russia and be persecuted,” attorney John Sandweg told CNN while the convicted fraudster said, “I feel like, New York, if you have to be in house arrest anywhere, I think New York is like one of the better places for that.”

Sorokin, better known to the public as Anna Delvey, has followed an extraordinary path from New York socialite to notorious con artist, raising enduring questions about fame, fortune and the price of deception.

The Afternoon Habit a Cardiologist Recommends for Your Heart (That Isn’t a Walk)

Taking a short deep-breathing break in the afternoon can help protect your heart. Dr. Lars Sondergaard, MD, Cardiologist and Chief Medical Officer and Divisional Vice President, Abbott’s Structural Heart Division, previously told Parade that two to five minutes of deep breathing or stepping away from screens can help reset stress levels during the day.

“Intentionally pausing for just a few minutes to focus on your breath or practice a simple meditation helps lower cortisol levels, reduces overall nervous system arousal and acts as a powerful buffer against the daily stressors that can otherwise take a toll on your heart over time,” Dr. Sondergaard said. “It’s a simple habit, but one that directly supports how your heart functions day in and day out.”

That matters because the afternoon can be especially taxing. “The afternoon can often bring on feelings of fatigue, mental overload or the pressure of looming deadlines,” Dr. Sondergaard said. He explains that stress “triggers the release of cortisol and adrenaline, which can temporarily increase your heart rate and blood pressure.” Triggering your body’s relaxation response helps “calm your nervous system and reduce the overall wear and tear on your heart caused by chronic tension.”

“Over time, these small stress breaks can make a meaningful difference in overall cardiovascular health,” he said.

How to Make a Breathing Break Part of Your Afternoon

The beauty of this habit is how little it asks of you. You don’t need special equipment or workout clothes, and you don’t have to rearrange your schedule. A few ways to build it into your day:

• Set a reminder. A daily calendar alert or phone alarm in the midafternoon can nudge you to pause before the slump fully sets in.
• Step away from screens. Dr. Sondergaard noted that disconnecting from your devices for a few minutes can also help reset stress levels.
• Slow your breathing down. Sit comfortably, breathe in slowly through your nose and make your exhale a little longer than your inhale. Repeat for two to five minutes.
• Pair it with other heart-healthy habits. Dr. Sondergaard also recommended a balanced lunch with fiber, lean protein and healthy fats, plus getting up to move after long stretches of sitting.

Think of it as a reset button for your nervous system—one that your heart will thank you for.

Hulu’s new competition series The Mob brings together 12 celebrities from shows including Dancing With the Stars, The Real Housewives of New Jersey, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, Selling Sunset, The Bachelor franchise and RuPaul’s Drag Race for a mob-inspired game with up to $250,000 at stake.

Emmy-nominated actress Parker Posey hosts the series, which comes from the executive producers behind reality hit The Traitors.

Parker Posey hosts The Mob and also serves as an executive producer.

Posey has appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows over her career, including Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, Dazed and Confused and The White Lotus.

What is ‘The Mob’ About?

The Mob sends its 12 celebrity contestants to a lavish Italian villa, where they compete in challenges inspired by mob movies for the chance to win up to $250,000.

But there’s a catch.

The group must choose a “don,” who receives enormous power within the game. The don decides who makes money, who remains in the competition and who gets “whacked.”

That creates a potentially dangerous balancing act. The don needs the loyalty of the rest of the “family” to remain in control, while the other contestants have the opportunity to rise up and overthrow their leader.

Each episode also features mob movie-inspired “jobs” that contestants must tackle to survive the competition.

The Mob premieres Monday, Oct. 26, 2026.

The Mob will stream on Hulu beginning Oct. 26.

The series will also be available through Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.

Is ‘The Mob’ Connected to ‘The Traitors’?

The Mob isn’t a spinoff of The Traitors, but the two reality competitions share some creative DNA.

The new Hulu series is produced by Studio Lambert and Primal Media. Studio Lambert is also behind Peacock’s Emmy-winning reality competition The Traitors.

Tim Harcourt, Jack Burgess, Niall O’Driscoll and Stephen Lambert serve as executive producers for Studio Lambert. Adam Wood and Mat Steiner, who conceived The Mob format, executive produce for Primal Media alongside STV Studios CEO David Mortimer.

Posey also serves as an executive producer, while Susan House is the showrunner.

With reality veterans from several major franchises sharing an Italian villa and one contestant holding the power to “whack” the others, The Mob is setting up a game built around alliances, loyalty and the question every good mob story eventually has to answer: Who can you trust?
