Considering how popular the country rock genre is today, it might seem hard to believe that there was ever a time when fans didn't like the idea of combining the two distinct styles. Unfortunately for the Byrds, that was still the case in 1968 when the band released the countrified album Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, featuring songs by the likes of Merle Haggard.

The record promptly flopped, but that didn't discourage Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, who left the Byrds later that same year to form the Flying Burrito Brothers. Also including pedal steel player ‘Sneaky’ Pete Kleinow and bassist Chris Ethridge, the Flying Burrito Brothers set about making what Parsons called "cosmic American music."

“Gram had this idea of ‘cosmic American Music,'” Hillman told Classic Rock. “In the late sixties, when record labels were run by real music people, you were allowed to develop and experiment. Music had no rules back then. People borrowed from other styles. There was so much freedom.”

In 1969, the Flying Burrito Brothers released their debut album, The Gilded Palace of Sin, consisting mostly of songs written by Hillman and Parsons at "Burrito Manor," their shared home in the San Fernando Valley.

“It was one of the most productive times in my life,” Hillman recalls. “We came up with some of the best things either of us ever wrote — songs like 'Sin City,' 'Christine’s Tune,' 'Wheels' and 'Juanita,' which conjures up some wonderful imagery.”

Another song on The Gilded Palace of Sin, "Hot Burrito #1," would go on to be considered the Flying Burrito Brothers' signature tune (and not just because it has the word "burrito" in the title). Written by Parsons, the lyrics were inspired by his painful breakup with girlfriendNancy, the mother of his daughter, according to Classic Rock History. Of course, the sentiments expressed are universal enough to apply to just about anybody in the middle of a romantic split:

You may be sweet and nice
But that won't keep you warm at night
'Cause I'm the one who showed you how
To do the things you're doing now

He may feel all your charms
He may hold you in his arms
But I'm the one who let you in

Though The Gilded Palace of Sin wasn't technically a commercial hit, the Flying Burrito Brothers were beloved among other musicians. Keith Richards was a fan (the Flying Burrito Brothers even opened for the Rolling Stones at Altamont), and Bob Dylan said they were his favorite country rock band.

“Boy, I love them,” Dylan told Rolling Stone, adding, "Their record instantly knocked me out.”

While the Flying Burrito Brothers would only record one more album (which wasn't a big seller either), their influence spans decades of country rock music, from the Eagles to Alan Jackson to Uncle Tupelo and so many others.

As Hillman put it in the book Hot Burritos: The True Story of the Flying Burrito Brothers by John Einarson: “The Byrds invented country rock. Gram and I refined it in the Burritos and the Eagles took it to the bank.”

The mystery genre tends to be a favorite among modern-day readers. This makes sense as there are plenty of captivating classic mysteries and recently published novels from the genre. Collider highlighted a few of the most acclaimed, relatively new mysteries with a list of "the 6 greatest mystery books of the last 20 years."

The ranking, published on July 14, featured novels such as Lucy Foley's Guest List, published in 2020, 2014's Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, and A.J. Finn's 2018 book, The Woman in the Window. Collider put prolific novelist Tana French's 2020 book The Searcher at the top of the list. The publication pointed to the protagonist Cal Hooper's compelling and touching dynamic with Trey Reddy, a child whom he tries to help, as what elevated the book.

During a 2021 interview for the Library of Congress National Book Festival, French confirmed that Westerns were a source of inspiration for The Searcher. She clarified that she wasn't directly influenced by Alan LeMay's 1954 novel The Searchers and its 1956 movie adaptation starring John Wayne. She said that she didn't believe that her and LeMay's books have "anything particularly in common with [each other] except some of the great Western themes, like the quest, the journey to find someone."

"I don't think it's true that it was patterned after The Searchers, which I'll be honest, I have only read part of," said the In the Woods author. "It's definitely got serious Western influences, but that wasn't one of the Westerns that I was reading or nodding to in particular. I mean, I was reading Lonesome Dove and True Grit and TheSisters Brothers."

She then explained why she titled her eighth book The Searcher.

"There's a definite reference there, but it was more that it felt like a good title that would fit both the main characters while also having that Western influence," said French during the 2021 interview.

Long before streaming platforms offered viewers access to sports coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week, events like the Olympics made stars of athletes whose talents seemed superhuman. Before they were known as Badfinger, they were The Iveys, and released "Come and Get It," written by Paul McCartney, which would jumpstart a new era of their career under a new band name.

When signing with the Beatles' Apple label, the band rebranded themselves with a new name. They were inspired by the working song title "Bad Finger Boogie," which would end up becoming the 1967 song "With a Little Help from My Friends" by the Beatles. "Come and Get It" would become their first release under their new name with the record label, and the track started as a solo demo by McCartney.

In reality, McCartney had written the track because he was contracted to produce three songs for the 1969 satirical black comedy film The Magic Christian that also starred Ringo Starr. The Beatles icon saw "Come and Get It" as a perfect opportunity for it to become the Iveys' first single under their band name, but there was a catch.

“I’d written the song ‘Come And Get It’ and I’d made a fairly decent demo. Because I lived locally, I could get in half an hour before a Beatles session at Abbey Road—knowing it would be empty and all the stuff would be set up—and I’d use Ringo’s equipment to put a drum track down, put some piano down, quickly put some bass down, do the vocal, and double-track it," he explained in The Beatles Anthology book.

"I said to Badfinger, ‘OK, it’s got to be exactly like this demo,’ because it had a great feeling on it. They actually wanted to put their own variations on, but I said, ‘No, this really is the right way.’”

In the end, the band relented and agreed to McCartney's conditions, and their version is almost indistinguishable from the original demo. McCartney also auditioned each of the band members to see who would be lead vocals and ended up choosing Tom Evans. He would also produce two other The Iveys originals for the same film.

Badfinger was right to follow the music icon's direction, as "Come and Get It" became their big breakthrough as a band. The song landed at No. 7 on theBillboard Hot 100 chart and No. 4 in the UK. "Come and Get It" being the opening theme song to the 1969 movie also pushed its popularity forward, with critics calling it a "powerful" track that would become their signature hit.

The rock band/power-pop band would have an impactful but short-lived career under the label and released further hits like "No Matter What," "Day After Day," and "Without You." The Beatles would also release McCartney's original demo of the track in 1996 for their Anthology 3 album.

George Lucas is all about the future, even if much of Hollywood remains skeptical.

The legendary filmmaker recently shared his thoughts on artificial intelligence in moviemaking, arguing that the technology should be viewed as another step in the evolution of filmmaking rather than something to fear.

Speaking with A Rabbit's Foot in a piece shared earlier this month, the Star Wars creator said AI has the potential to make the creative process significantly easier.

"Artificial intelligence means it's much easier for us to make movies," the 82-year-old said. "It's very much like sitting here saying, 'Well, I believe the horse and the buggy is really where it's at. These cars, they break down, they need gas, there's all kinds of problems with them and pretty soon they'll be making them into tanks, and then they'll be killing people. It's terrible.' There's nothing you can do about it. That's progress, it's the future."

While AI has become one of Hollywood's most divisive topics, Lucas believes the technology can also help solve some of the concerns surrounding its use. "If you want AI that tells you when something is fake and where it came from, AI can do that," he explained. "Humans can't, we're not that smart."

lLucas added that accountability should ultimately remain with the people using the technology, saying, "Whatever you do, you should be recognized. It's just like real life."

Guns N' Roses has announced an exclusive partnership with fundraising platform Fandiem as part of the band's 2026 world tour, launching a nationwide campaign that will support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) while offering fans access to rare VIP experiences throughout the tour.

The campaign allows fans to contribute to suicide prevention efforts while entering for a chance to win premium prizes tied to the band's North American dates, including a grand prize trip to the group's Sept. 5, 2026 concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

According to the campaign details, proceeds will help fund AFSP's mission to save lives and provide support for individuals and families affected by suicide. The initiative also aims to increase awareness of mental health resources during Guns N' Roses' latest global run.

Fans who donate through Fandiem will automatically be entered into the grand prize drawing for a VIP concert package for two in Pasadena. The prize includes round-trip airfare, a three-night hotel stay, and two tickets to the Rose Bowl performance.

Guns N' Roses 2026 Tour Expands Global Reach

The fundraising partnership arrives as Guns N' Roses prepares for one of its largest touring schedules in recent years.

The North American leg opens July 23 at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina, before making stops in New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Canada, New Jersey, Texas and California.

The Rose Bowl performance in Pasadena will serve as the centerpiece of the fundraising campaign and will feature special guest Ice Cube.

Following North America, the tour continues through India, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand before concluding Dec. 17 at Eden Park in Auckland.

Several dates will feature special guests including Public Enemy, The Black Crowes, Pierce The Veil, Airbourne and The Barbarians of California.

The current touring lineup includes Axl Rose, Slash, Duff McKagan, Dizzy Reed, Richard Fortus, Isaac Carpenter and Melissa Reese, although Reese is not expected to participate in the 2026 touring cycle.

The partnership marks another major move for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band as it continues balancing new music, large-scale tours and charitable projects.

The group released new singles "Atlas" and "Nothin'" in late 2025, their first new material since 2023. The songs followed previous releases "The General" and "Perhaps," adding fresh material to concert setlists that already feature classics such as "Sweet Child o' Mine," "Welcome to the Jungle" and "November Rain."

The campaign also arrives during a period of change for the band. Longtime drummer Frank Ferrer exited Guns N' Roses in 2025 after a 19-year run with the group, with Isaac Carpenter taking over behind the drum kit for the current tour era.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Ferrer dismissed long-standing perceptions about frontman Axl Rose.

"That he's a mean guy. I think the world thinks that he's a scary, mean guy. And he's the complete opposite," Ferrer said.

"[Rose] doesn't suffer fools, so that might piss people off. But he's generous and super funny and worried about us all the time. I wish they could know him the way I know him."

Formed in Los Angeles in 1985, Guns N' Roses has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and remains one of rock music's most successful touring acts. Their reunion-era tours have sold millions of tickets globally, while their catalog continues to attract tens of millions of monthly listeners on streaming platforms.

The Little House on the Prairie has inspired fans for generations. 

The more recent rendition of the story is from Netflix. It follows Laura Ingalls and her family as they navigate frontier life in the 1860s. 

AliceHalsey, who plays Laura, spoke to People about how she’s getting to know her co-star, WillaDun. 

“We did a chemistry read so I could meet some possible Nellies, and I met Willa and we had fun immediately,” Halsey said. “We were doing the hula and boxing. It was so fun. I love her.” 

Dun plays Nellie Oleson, one of Laura’s classmates and her frenemy. 

“I think Laura’s dynamic with Nellie is definitely one that’s not very easy to explain. Part of Laura hates her because she can be pretty snotty, but I think that part of the reason that Laura hates her is because Nellie is everything that Laura’s not,” Halsey explained. 

Fans of the 1974  Little House on the Prairie television series will remember AlisonArngrim as Laura’s spoiled rival. The nine-season show also starred MelissaGilbert, MichaelLandon, KarenGrassle, and MelissaSueAnderson. 

“Nellie is popular and ... she seems smart and pretty and doesn’t seem self-conscious at all and she’s rich. She can have everything that she wants,” the 11-year-old actress shared. 

Adding, she thinks the dynamic between Dun and herself next season will be “a lot of fun.” 

The Little House on the Prairie franchise began with the semi-autobiographical book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The series spanned nine books published between 1932 and 1971. 

Netflix plans to adapt one book for each season. The streamer greenlit the show’s second season in March, before the first installment was released. 

Halsey is confident audiences are going to love the next season. “There’s going to be some drama on the prairie,” she teased.

There's nothing like the perfect song to make an emotional movie moment really hit home with viewers. Whether the scene in question is suspenseful, joyful, triumphant or heartbreakingly sad, the right tune can play almost as important a role as the actors themselves. A perfect example? Kate Bush's haunting 1988 ballad, "This Woman's Work," which appeared in the John Hughes comedy She's Having a Baby that same year.

Starring Kevin Bacon (Jake) and Elizabeth McGovern (Kristy) as a newlywed couple, "She's Having a Baby" deals with more grown-up themes than most of the other iconic '80s movies Hughes is known for (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, etc.). It's still funny and lighthearted though, for the most part, chronicling such typical newlywed experiences as looking for work, buying a house in the suburbs and dealing with fertility struggles.

Things take a turn for the serious, however, after Kristy finally goes into labor and there are life-threatening complications. That's when "This Woman's Work" plays, as Jake is forced to leave the delivery room, flashing back through a series of memories with his wife. Thanks to Bush's masterpiece, the scene is a guaranteed tear-jerker (but don't worry, the movie has a happy ending).

As Bush explained in a 1989 BBC interview, per Far Out, she wrote "This Woman's Work" specifically for the scene, which had already been filmed.

“This is actually the moment in the film where [Jake] has to grow up. He has no choice,” Bush said.

“There he is, he’s not a kid anymore; you can see he’s in a very grown-up situation," she continued. "And he starts, in his head, going back to the times they were together. There are clips of film of them laughing together and doing up their flat and all this kind of thing. And it was such a powerful visual: it’s one of the quickest songs I’ve ever written. It was so easy to write. We had the piece of footage on video, so we plugged it up so that I could actually watch the monitor while I was sitting at the piano and I just wrote the song to these visuals.”

The lyrics are like two sides of an emotional coin: Jake is afraid and regretful, but he hasn't lost hope. The pre-chorus is like a prayer of encouragement for Kristy:

I know you have a little life in you yet
I know you have a lot of strength left
I know you have a little life in you yet
I know you have a lot of strength left

When the chorus hits, it's like all of Jake's emotions overflow:

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show
I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

"This Woman's Work" is, without a doubt, the climax of the movie, and years later, fans continue to find comfort and hope in the tune. (Comments on the above YouTube video include many from listeners who lost, or nearly lost, loved ones of their own, some in childbirth).

When it came time to film the video for "This Woman's Work" (which was released on Bush's 1989 album The Sensual World in addition to the She's Having a Baby soundtrack), Bush chose to tell a more "ambiguous" story.

"It was interesting because the song had originally been written to visuals, but the song has its own storyline as well, so then it was like making a film of the song," Bush, who directed the video herself, recalled in a 1990 interview with Option, per Songfacts.

"Obviously in the movie it's about a man waiting for wife having a baby. Now I didn't want to put myself in a situation where I have to be pregnant," she continued. "It's all too complicated. So left it very ambiguous. And I think it looks like a little film in that it tells a story."

Over the years, many other TV and movie directors have used the song to help tell their own stories. "This Woman's Work" has appeared in such shows as The Handmaid's Tale, Party of Five, Alias, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and others, in addition to movies like The Mother starring Jennifer Lopez.

Singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry was just 24 years old when she wrote and recorded the iconic Southern Gothic ballad that would become her career-defining hit.

The song made her a star, earning Grammy Awards and even leading to her own CBS variety special, The Spring Thing. But before a single note ever reached listeners, someone was trying to steal “Ode to Billie Joe” and claim it as his own.

According to American Songwriter, Gentry was in a romantic relationship with songwriter Jim Ford. An esteemed lyricist who collaborated with P.J. Proby, The Temptations, and Aretha Franklin, Ford allegedly also had a habit of attempting to claim authorship of other people's songs.

Citing Tara Murtha’s Bobbie Gentry’s Ode to Billie Joe, an “investigative pop history” of Gentry’s career, the outlet writes that’s precisely what Ford did with “Ode to Billie Joe.”

The story goes: While Gentry was pitching her song to Del-Fi Records, Ford told everyone the song was his. “Gentry was only there, he said, because he needed her to sing it,” AS shared. In the end, Del-Fi passed on the song, with Capitol Records scooping it up and releasing it with Gentry credited as songwriter.

Released on July 10, 1967, “Ode to Billie Joe” sparked a decades-long debate that went far beyond the pseudo-mystery involving its author. The lead single from her debut album topped theBillboard Hot 100 for four weeks, but it also got people talking and debating.

A first-person narrative about the suicide of a fictional character named Billie Joe McAllister and its aftermath, the song tells of a local boy from Choctaw Ridge, Mississippi, who mysteriously jumps off the Tallahatchie Bridge. The lyrics then focus on his girlfriend and her family, whose nonchalant, gossipy chitchat at the dinner table fails to account for the impact the death has had on the narrator.

At one point in the song, Gentry sings, “He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge / And she and Billy Joe were throwing somethin’ off the Tallahatchie Bridge.” That lyric sparked decades of debate, with fans yearning to know what was thrown off the bridge. The unanswered question helped fuel the song’s popularity.

“The song is sort of a study in unconscious cruelty,” Gentry once said, per Performing Songwriter. “But everybody seems more concerned with what was thrown off the bridge than they are with the thoughtlessness of the people expressed in the song. What was thrown off the bridge really isn’t that important.”

Gentry is seemingly taking the secret to her grave, as she has never publicly revealed what she intended the object to be. Long-standing theories include a bouquet of flowers, a ring, or the young couple’s illegitimate child.

“Anyone who hears the song can think what they want, but the real message of the song, if there must be a message, revolves around the nonchalant way the family talks about the suicide,” Gentry explained. “They sit there eating their peas and apple pie and talking, without even realizing that Billie Joe’s girlfriend is sitting at the table, a member of the family.”

The song, named one of the greatest of all time by Rolling Stone, popularized cinematic storytelling in music, with its ambiguity and emotional detachment influencing both Hollywood (Warner Bros. directly adapted the song for a film in 1976) and generations of songwriters, like Tom T. Hall (“Harper Valley PTA”), Porter Wagoner (“Carroll County Accident”), and Lucinda Williams (“Pineola”).

Gibson Custom just announced the 1971 Flying V Medallion Reissue in Medallion Cherry, a handcrafted recreation of a sought-after and historically significant guitar.

Originally released in limited numbers, the 1971 Flying V Medallion reportedly became a standout instrument of the early hard rock era, according to Gibson. The new reissue is now available worldwide through authorized Gibson dealers, Gibson Garage locations and on Gibson.com.

The iconic guitar brand took to social media on Tuesday, July 14 to reveal its reissued Flying V, and fans certainly seem tickled.

"This model puts you in the lineage of hard rock, connected to icons like Michael Schenker and inspired by instruments coveted by players like Kirk Hammett," reads the caption of Gibson's recent Instagram post, in part. "More than a recreation, it feels like stepping into a defining moment in hard rock."

Fans have expressed their excitement at the reissue in the post's comments section. "🔥🔥🔥🔥 i need this," wrote one Instagram user, while another person commented, "All i heard when i first saw tge shape and color was 'feel good.'"

“The 1971 Flying V Medallion holds a special place in Gibson history,” Mat Koehler, vice president of product at Gibson, said in a statement. “As one of Gibson’s earliest limited-edition instruments, it helped establish a lasting legacy within hard rock guitar culture. This reissue brings back the details, feel, and sound of the original, giving players the opportunity to experience an iconic instrument with remarkable vintage accuracy.”

Originally created to commemorate the 1972 Olympic Games, the Flying V Medallion was produced in an estimated run of only around 350 instruments — indeed making it one of Gibson’s rarest vintage models.

As Hollywood continues mourning the loss of Sam Neill, new details are emerging about the his in the days leading up to his sudden death at age 78.

According to Neill's longtime friend and Hunt for the Wilderpeople co-star Rima Te Wiata, the beloved actor had been ill with pneumonia before his passing.

Speaking on Ryan Bridge TODAY, per The New Zealand Herald, Te Wiata revealed, "It really sucks actually. As he said in the press once, he's not scared of death but he would be annoyed. He would be like, 'Oh for goodness sake I just got over my cancer and now look, now I get pneumonia. What next? But he's on his big journey now'."

Neill revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer, in 2022. Earlier this year, however, scans found he was cancer-free. Because of that timeline, Te Wiata's recollection of Neill's pneumonia comment appears to reference a conversation that took place after he received that health update.

Neill's family previously confirmed his death in a statement, describing it as "sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free." They also thanked the staff at St. Vincent's Private Hospital in Sydney for their care while asking for privacy as they grieve.

While it’s not clear if the pneumonia was related to his death, Te Wiata remembered Neill as someone who brought a calming presence wherever he went. "He was a very steady, peaceful, grounded man," she said per the outlet, who shared the news on Monday, July 13. "He was more like a lovely gardener, someone who was doing the vege garden or something. There was sort of a gentlemanly demeanour that went along with it."

As news of Neill's passing spread, tributes poured in from many of the people who knew him best. His Jurassic Park co-star Laura Dern told People, "Sam was my beloved lifetime friend… He showed me the depths of loyalty, protectiveness and love always with the driest of wit." She added, "He was a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man. I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant."

Director Steven Spielbergalso reflected on working with Neill, saying, "Sam was exceptionally collaborative," before adding, "I adored making all the Jurassic movies with him."

The 80s were a strange time for Bob Dylan, as it was for many other artists of his generation. Many aging stars found themselves adopting the '80s sound in a way that wasn't received super well or reflected what made them so special in the first place. Dylan wasn't an exception this, with his '80s output being his most critically reviled period.

Maybe the apex of this period of poor reception is "Knocked Out Loaded," which released 40 years ago today. The album opened to pretty poor reviews, being overwhelming described as a boring and uninspired record. This period of Dylan's career would later be largely written off by the man himself, admitting he was making "bad" albums on purpose.

I'm of the opinion however that no Dylan album has nothing good on it, and this is absolutely true with "Knocked Out Loaded," which features one of Dylan's greatest epics, "Brownsville Girl."

The song is a hilarious, absurd saga following Dylan reminiscing about a former lover and the escapades they got into together, including Dylan almost being gunned down in the street. This is occasionally interrupted by Dylan trying to remember a Gregory Peck movie he saw about him as a gunslinger.

The song features some of Dylan's funniest lines, a great vocal performance, and the least dated instrumentation and production on the record. It's very much in line with the classic Dylan epics that we find ourselves used to throughout his discography. Just to highlight the song's tone, here are some of my favorite lines:

She said, “Welcome to the land of the living dead”
You could tell she was so broken hearted
She said, “Even the swap meets around here are getting pretty corrupt”

Well, you saw my picture in the Corpus Christi Tribune. Underneath it,
it said, “A man with no alibi”

It was the best acting I saw anybody do

While "Knocked Out Loaded" was far from a success for Dylan, he did create one of his greatest songwriting efforts with "Brownsville Girl," so happy 40th birthday to one of Dylan's most absurd songs.

"Oh Mickey, you're so fine. You're so fine. You blow my mind. Hey Mickey!" Nearly everyone who lived through the early '80s can still sing along to the infectious hit "Mickey" by Toni Basil. What began as a simple chant became a full-blown pop culture craze, thanks to MTV, school pep rallies, and sporting events — but the song's origins were far more surprising than most fans realize.

The Song's Surprising Backstory

In 1979, "Mickey" was co-written by the songwriting duo Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and originally recorded by the English rock group Racey under the song title "Kitty." The original song wasn't about Mickey at all.

Basil wasn't just a singer. She was already an accomplished Hollywood choreographer and dancer when she stumbled across "Kitty." She changed the title to "Mickey," reimagined it from a female perspective, concocted the chant, and transformed it into something entirely her own.

“I had to beg my record company to let me record it,” she told The Guardian, recalling the feedback she got. “They thought it was a terrible idea; they didn’t know what cheerleaders were.”

Still a year ahead of MTV's debut, Basil directed short films to go with a few of her songs. That's when she conceived and choreographed the now-iconic cheerleader video. Basil wore her own high school cheerleading uniform and enlisted cheerleaders from a high school championship squad to perform as her backup dancers.

The timing couldn't have been better. Just months later, MTV launched and suddenly music videos became just as important as the songs themselves.

Why 'Mickey' Became a Craze

Everything about "Mickey" worked — the chant was instantly memorable, the new wave synth sound gave it fresh '80s appeal, and the energetic choreography begged to be copied. The video played right into for MTV's earliest days.

As the video received heavy rotation, "Mickey" spread far beyond radio. Fans repeated the chant while driving around in cars, at school pep rallies, and dances, turning it into one of the decade's most recognizable pop culture moments.

The Song's Breakout Success

Released as the lead single forWord of Mouth in January 1982, the song eventually climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Basil's one and only pop hit ... but also one of MTV's defining early videos.

Being 38 years old at the time, Basil also challenged the status quo about who could become a pop star amid MTV's youth-driven era. She conceived, directed, choreographed, and starred in one of the network's earliest iconic videos.

Why 'Mickey' Still Resonates

Few songs from the MTV era have remained as instantly recognizable as "Mickey." The song remains a permanent fixture of '80s retro culture, and the chant still echoes through sporting events, dance routines, and social media, where new generations continue discovering — and recreating — the song's infectious energy.

Collider recently ranked "Mickey" No. 4 in their list of the "The 10 Greatest '80s One-Hit Wonders," and the track currently has more than 24 million Spotify streams.

Forty years ago this week, one of the most emotional ballads of the 1980s sat at No. 1 in America. Most people have always heard it as a love song. It was never one.

On the Billboard Hot 100 dated July 12, 1986, Simply Red's "Holding Back the Years" reached the top and held it for a week. The band's breakthrough hit, a smoky slow-burn carried by frontman Mick Hucknall's aching falsetto, it remains one of only two Simply Red songs ever to top the U.S. chart.

A Song Written in a Teenager's Bedroom

Hucknall wrote "Holding Back the Years" when he was just 17, in his bedroom at his father's house in Manchester. In a 2018 interview, he recalled an art-school teacher's advice to work in a "stream of consciousness," and what poured out reached back to the deepest wound of his childhood. His mother, Maureen, had walked out on the family when he was just three, leaving him to be raised by his barber father, Reg. The ballad's ache of distance and regret came straight from a boy who grew up longing for a mother who was gone.

The track first surfaced in 1982 as a single by Hucknall's earlier band, the Frantic Elevators, and went nowhere. Simply Red re-recorded it for their 1985 debut album, Picture Book. Even then it stalled at first, scraping the lower reaches of the UK chart before a 1986 reissue finally sent it to No. 1 in America.

Four Decades On

Simply Red recently marked its own 40 years with a world tour and a concert film named for the song, Holding Back the Years: 40 Years of Simply Red. Four decades after it topped the American chart, the ballad still aches, and now more listeners know exactly why.

Country rock star Brantley Gilbert is taking his Real American Tour across more of the United States this fall, adding a new round of dates that will keep him on the road through November 2026.

The newly announced shows include stops in Boston, Savannah, Cincinnati, Biloxi and several other cities as Gilbert continues supporting his upcoming eighth studio album, Sins Of The Father. 

Country singer-songwriter John Morgan will serve as direct support throughout the tour, while Jay Webb and Atlus will join on select dates.

The added concerts begin on Sept. 24 in Boston and run through Nov. 7 in Corinth, Mississippi, expanding a tour schedule that already includes performances across California, Colorado, Washington, Wisconsin, and other states.

Fans in the Gold and Silver tiers of Gilbert's fan club received early access to tickets beginning Tuesday. Bronze members gained access on Wednesday, while general ticket sales are scheduled to begin Friday at 10 A.M.

The tour expansion arrives just days before the release of Sins Of The Father, which is set to arrive on July 24 through BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville.

Gilbert recently shared two songs from the project, the title track "Sins Of The Father" and "Good Ol' Boys." 

The 15-song album was co-produced by Brock Berryhill, known for his work with Twenty One Pilots and Kane Brown. The record combines country storytelling with rock-driven production and features songs co-written with Taylor Phillips, Jelly Roll, HARDY and others.

Among the newly added dates are performances at Leader Bank Pavilion in Boston on Sept. 24, VyStar Pavilion in Savannah on Oct. 8, PNC Pavilion in Cincinnati on Oct. 16 and Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi on Nov. 6.

The tour itself launched earlier this year and has already brought Gilbert to fairs, casinos, amphitheaters and festival stages throughout the country.

Gilbert remains one of country music's most successful crossover performers. Since releasing his debut album A Modern Day Prodigal Son in 2009, he has earned seven No. 1 hits and generated more than eight billion streams.

His catalog includes chart-topping songs such as "Country Must Be Country Wide," "You Don't Know Her Like I Do," "Bottoms Up" and "One Hell of an Amen." Beyond his own recordings, Gilbert also co-wrote Jason Aldean favorites "My Kinda Party" and "Dirt Road Anthem."

The tour announcement follows another notable moment for Gilbert on stage. During a recent appearance at Country Fest in Ohio, he performed 3 Doors Down's "When I'm Gone" in tribute to late frontman Brad Arnold.

A sequel of a beloved film could either tarnish or elevate the original movie's legacy. The publication Colliderrecently spotlighted some of the latter by releasing a ranking of "the 10 most important movie sequels of all time."

The films featured on the July 13 list included 1986'sAliens, Mad Max: Fury Roadfrom 2015, 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and The Dark Knight, released in 2008. According to the publication, the "most important" sequel ever released is 1980's Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, which was released three years after the first Star Wars film, 1977's Episode IV – A New Hope.

Irvin Kershner, Who Directed 'The Empire Strikes Back,' Discussed the Appeal of 'Star Wars' in 2007

While the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, directed A New Hope, filmmaker Irvin Kershner was chosen to be the Empire Strikes Back director. During an interview at the 2007 Star Wars Celebration, Kershner, who died in 2010 at the age of 87, said that he immediately understood the allure of Star Wars upon seeing A New Hope.

"When I saw the film together, I realized it had an appeal that is quite subterranean, it went beyond the superficial. It was like a western. It was certainly not a sci-fi picture, it was a fairy tale. And this was the vision that he had," said Kershner.

Kershner went on to say that "George really created something marvelous" with A New Hope and he "had to build on top of that" while making The Empire Strikes Back.

Kershner also shared that he wasn't interested in directing The Empire Strikes Back.

"I had turned it down originally. I turned it down for a month," said Kershner.

He then confided that he felt a decent amount of pressure to ensure the sequel's success as Lucas was "financing the film."

"To take on that responsibility, where we didn't know whether the second one would work, and he's putting every cent he had into the film, that was a little too much. But I got over it and I said, 'What the hell, it's only money. His money,'" said Kershner during the 2007 interview.
