On August 20, 2007, a 12-year-old girl was on the beach at Jedediah Island in British Columbia when she spotted a blue-and-white running shoe — men’s size 12 — lying in the sand. She looked inside and found a sock. She looked inside the sock and found a human foot.

Six days later, a couple hiking nearby found another sneaker on Gabriola Island. Also a right foot. Also a men’s size 12. Different shoe, different person. “Two being found in such a short period of time is quite suspicious,” a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer told the Vancouver Sun. “Finding one foot is like a million to one odds, but to find two is crazy.”

Then five more turned up the following year. Then more after that. More than 20 confirmed human feet have now washed ashore across the Salish Sea — the stretch of coastal waterways connecting British Columbia and Washington state — almost all of them in sneakers.

Everyone Had a Theory. Nobody Was Right.

The tips came flooding in. A serial killer targeting feet specifically. Drug cartels. A container ship full of bodies. The 2004 tsunami. One man who found an early foot told The Guardian he had his own theory: “There’s someone doing this all right. Think about it — if they tied a chain around someone’s ankle and threw them overboard, the foot would just pop off.” He was convinced. He was wrong.

Psychics called the BC Coroners Service every time a new foot appeared. Pranksters staged fake finds — sneakers stuffed with chicken bones, skeletonized dog paws — left on beaches to see what would happen. Investigators had to rule out hoaxes before they could do anything else.

None of it was right.

The real answer involves crabs.

What Actually Happens to a Body in Cold Water

When someone drowns in the Salish Sea, their body typically sinks. The cold water slows decomposition, so the remains stay down — and get eaten. In 2007, forensic scientist Gail Anderson of Simon Fraser University dropped a dead pig into the Salish Sea to study exactly this. Shrimp and Dungeness crabs stripped the carcass to bones in under four days.

Scavengers chew around hard bones but eat right through soft tissue. Your hip is a ball-and-socket joint — mostly bone, hard to pull apart. Your ankle is held together almost entirely by ligaments. Soft tissue. Exactly what crabs prefer. So a sunken body gets picked apart, and the feet — at the body’s softest joint — separate first, naturally, with no cutting involved.

Once free, the foot floats. Starting in the mid-2000s, sneaker makers began using lighter foam and gas-filled cushioning pockets that made modern soles genuinely buoyant. A foot in an older shoe stays on the seafloor. A foot in a modern running shoe floats to the surface — which is also why the mystery started in 2007 and not earlier.

As for why the Salish Sea specifically: it’s an unusually large enclosed waterway. Prevailing westerly winds push floating objects toward shore rather than out to sea. And the rocky Pacific Northwest coastline means more people wear sneakers near the water. Once something goes in, it tends to stay inside until it washes up somewhere.

Who Were These People?

Investigators matched DNA from the feet to a database of more than 500 missing persons. Nine feet were linked to seven people — sometimes years after the foot was found. The longest gap: a man missing since 1985 whose foot washed up in 2011 in a hiking boot, the only non-sneaker in the entire set. Twenty-six years between disappearance and discovery.

The BC Coroners Service determined all identified Canadian cases were accidents or suicides — drownings, falls, people who jumped from bridges. In at least one Washington state case, investigators said they couldn’t rule out homicide. These were cold cases the ocean handed back quietly, one shoe at a time.

The most recent confirmed human foot washed ashore in Victoria in July 2023. In December 2025, a Puma sneaker turned up in Washington — but forensic testing found it contained bear remains, not human. Every new find still has to be checked.

Barb McLintock of the BC Coroners Service put it best. She’s not surprised the feet keep coming. She’s more struck by how many probably never will.

“Presumably there probably are a bunch of running shoes bouncing around out there,” she said. “But no one’s ever going to find them.”

If your neighborhood seems a little quieter than it used to on Halloween night, you’re not alone. A new survey suggests that plenty of families are skipping their own streets when it comes time to take their kids trick-or-treating, even though most think their neighborhoods are great places to celebrate.

According to new research from Rocket Companies, just 51% of parents take their young children trick-or-treating on their own street, despite 86% of families saying their neighborhood is a great place to go door-to-door collecting candy.

So why are so many families heading elsewhere on Halloween? The survey suggests that the answer may have less to do with the neighborhoods themselves and more to do with whether families expect their neighbors to participate.

“We kept hearing that fewer trick-or-treaters were heading out on once-popular blocks, so we looked into it,” said Sarah Tarraf, senior vice president of integrated marketing, knowledge and measurement at Rocket. “We found the interest is still there, people are just waiting for a sign from their neighbors that the night will fill their kids’ candy bags. A lit porch, a decorated yard or a group chat text can be all it takes to bring the neighborhood out.”

A new survey from Rocket Companies finds that Americans are spending an average of $39 per household on Halloween decorations this year, compared to $38 on candy.

More than half (52%) of families surveyed assume that not enough homes in their neighborhood will participate in trick-or-treating to make the night worth their while, a belief that goes both ways: Nearly four in 10 households said they did not hand out candy last Halloween because they expected that no one would show up.

Rocket reports candy typically makes up a third of consumers’ Halloween budget, adding that, without the need to purchase candy for trick-or-treaters, many homeowners put that money into Halloween home decor that neighbors can enjoy all season long, rather than just for one night. The study shows the average household now spends $39 on decor, putting it just ahead of the $38 they spend on candy.

“Putting out decorations,” said Tarraf, “even when you’re not sure anyone’s coming, is really about wanting to feel like you’re part of something on your street.”

When it comes to cashing in loyalty points, Americans are increasingly ditching the dream of an aspirational first-class flight in favor of an instant cold brew or a free burger at the drive-thru.

According to the inaugural State of Loyalty Report from The Points Guy (TPG), conducted in partnership with data analytics firm YouGov, consumers overwhelmingly gravitate toward programs tied to immediate, everyday routines rather than long-term travel goals. Among all dining rewards programs in the United States, Starbucks took the top spot, with 35% of respondents identifying it as their most-used program.

Overall, the report revealed a stark divide in perceived value: fuel programs (58%), credit cards (55%), and retail programs (49%) far outranked airline (35%) and hotel (34%) loyalty platforms. When asked what benefits mattered most, 84% of consumers prioritized free food and cash back, while complex travel perks like elite airline status, experiential packages, and airline alliance benefits ranked at the very bottom.

“What the survey found directly reflects our K-shaped economy,” said Brian Kelly, founder of The Points Guy. “Everyday consumers want instant value at checkout, whether it’s at the gas pump or a restaurant, while higher-end consumers demand frictionless travel perks, and we’re seeing the industry adapt to both. The two sides of our economy are drifting further apart, but the through line is the same: people want real value from their loyalty programs, and they’ll keep rewarding the brands that deliver it.”

Why Redeeming Lunch Feels Easier Than Booking a Flight

The confidence gap between ordering lunch and booking a flight is staggering. The study found that 43% of dining loyalty members feel very or extremely confident that they are maximizing their rewards. By contrast, only 28% of airline loyalty members feel confident navigating their frequent flyer miles—the lowest confidence level across every single category measured.

Much of that gap comes down to dynamic pricing and the mental gymnastics required to book a flight versus grabbing breakfast.

“A few factors are likely at play. Dining rewards (like McDonalds and Starbucks) are typically less complicated programs,” said Madison Blancaflor of The Points Guy. “A flight or hotel redemption will require a different amount of points depending on the date of the flight, the time of booking, demand for that specific flight and other factors thanks to dynamic pricing. And then there may also be blackout dates or other restrictions. Comparatively, dining programs typically use set pricing for redemptions with fewer restrictions on when and on what purchases you can use them. There’s a lot less guesswork and research involved.”

The psychological stakes of getting it wrong also play a massive role at checkout.

“There’s also the cost differential. A flight or hotel redemption is likely to save someone hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars at once. You’re probably saving less than $20 on even a large food redemption,” Blancaflor noted. “So naturally, it’s going to feel less risky to ‘get it wrong’ when redeeming dining rewards. That leads to higher confidence levels when redeeming, which is going to lead to higher redemption rates.”

Interestingly, while Starbucks dominates overall popularity, the study noted that it does not offer the strongest redemption value. Fast-food competitors often deliver far more aggressive returns toward a first reward: the median return across all analyzed dining programs was 12%, with MyMcDonald’s delivering a 16.6% return and Domino’s reaching up to 25% on qualifying orders.

How Occasional Travelers Can Still Win

For occasional flyers who feel overwhelmed by airline charts or worry they do not travel enough to ever earn a free ticket, Blancaflor says you do not have to let banked points sit idle.

“If someone doesn’t travel often, I’d recommend that they focus on earning flexible rewards that can be used for other things. A lot of points-earning cards now allow you to redeem points for dining experiences or other exclusive events. The more flexible the rewards you’re earning, the easier it is to use them (whether for travel or for other things),” Blancaflor explained.

“If you have travel rewards through an airline or hotel, also remember that redeeming for full tickets or hotel stays aren’t your only option,” she added. “If you only travel occasionally and therefore don’t have enough miles in your account for a full ticket, see if your miles could cover a seat or room upgrade. A lot of airlines allow you to use miles to cover inflight Wi-Fi purchases or even lounge access passes. There are a lot of ways you can use your rewards, even if you don’t feel like you’re earning enough to redeem for that first class flight.”

The studio audience at The Graham Norton Show thought they knew who was on the guest list. Then Prince William walked onto the stage.

The Prince of Wales made an unannounced appearance on a special Earthshot Prize edition of the BBC talk show, which was recorded Thursday and airs Friday, Oct. 23, on BBC One. According to GB News, Norton first chatted with Cate Blanchett, Robert Irwin and Hannah Waddingham before revealing what connected them: all three are involved with William’s Earthshot Prize initiative. The prince then appeared to cheers and audible gasps from the crowd.

Once he settled onto the famous red sofa, William, 44, explained that he created the Earthshot Prize in 2020 because he was tired of the doom and gloom surrounding environmental news. He told Norton he wanted to pair urgency with optimism, saying, “It’s all about getting excited,” People reported.

His fellow guests backed him up. Blanchett, an Earthshot Prize Council member, described the initiative as a “tapestry of solutions,” while Irwin, the prize’s 23-year-old global ambassador, spoke about inspiring younger generations to take action.

But the royal also let viewers in on his life at home. William revealed that his family loves The Celebrity Traitors, adding that Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are obsessed with it. He called himself a big fan of Christopher Nolan’s films, especially The Dark Knight trilogy, and admitted that as a kid he dreamed of becoming a police officer or a DJ, though he confessed he wasn’t very good at the latter.

The appearance kicks off the countdown to this year’s Earthshot Prize ceremony, which takes place in Mumbai over three days beginning Nov. 17. For viewers in the U.S., Prime Video will stream the event in more than 40 languages across 240 countries and territories, GB News reported.

Between the surprise entrance and the glimpse at family movie nights, William showed a lighter side of royal life, all while putting his biggest passion project in the spotlight. 

While the Twisted series certainly put Ana Huang on the BookTok map, she’s proven that she has many more exciting ideas. The Gods of the Game series continues the storytelling of standalone, interconnected stories, and The Keeper is focused on Noah and Carina’s tale.

The Keeper followed famed goalkeeper Noah Wilson, who avoids relationships. He has enough complications in his life, and when he’s not working, he just wants to be with his daughter. However, his bachelor status has made it impossible to find a nanny, and he needs one. The last person he ever wanted to hire was Carina, but when she proves to be a natural around his daughter, he needs to do what’s right for her. What he may not realize is that Carina is also right for his heart.

Most romance is told from the female’s perspective. When there is a dual romance, it’s the female main character who usually gets to start the tale. That’s not the case with The Keeper, and while chatting with Parade, Huang went into detail about why she decided she had to start with Noah first.

“I feel like there’s always one character who needs a little more development, peeling back all those layers,” Huang admitted, and she made it clear that Noah was that character for her in The Keeper. “Carina has always been more open, with her feelings and all those things. It just felt like a natural evolution of what this story is supposed to look like.”

Noah is a grumpy single dad, and there are times when you just want to bang your head against a desk due to the way he acts. In a lovable way, of course. This is a man who has a lot to learn and is willing to learn it. He adapts as he acknowledges that it’s the best, but I had to wonder if Huang feels the frustrations at times.

“It’s what makes it fun,” Huang laughed with me about it all. “If I’m writing a story about people who make perfect decisions all the time, then what is there to say? There’s no drama. I need a little mess in my stories.”

There’s certainly mess, but there is also certainly a good guy. At the heart of it all, his daughter comes first, and it’s something we need to see represented in fiction, showing real men that this is what women want! Of course, the problem with that is, as Huang shared, “Fictional men always set the bar very high.”

While there is a lot of focus on Noah at first, Carina still needs her own development. At first, it feels like she has her dream, but as time goes on, she has her own personal journey, and we get into the details of that.

“She knows what she wants, like her dream of going to Antarctica, but I think for her, it’s hard because she’s surrounded by people who have this passion in their lives,” Huang delved into the characters we’ve met in previous Gods of the Game series, Scarlett and Brooklyn, and then continued with, “She worries there’s something wrong with her.”

Carina doesn’t quite have the same passion that Scarlett has for dancing, or that Brooklyn has for nutrition. There is that fear as we all get older, that if we haven’t found our passion, are we broken? It makes The Keeper a relatable story, even for Huang, who admitted, “Before I became an author, I wondered if I was doing it because it was a job or because it was my grand purpose.”

There is an isolating feeling in that thought, even though it turns out that many of us have those same thoughts and fears all the time. Huang was able to convey it through her character of Carina.

Like Twisted and her Kings of Sin series, Gods of the Game is an interconnected series. That means cameos can happen, but they only happen when they’re worth it.

“I love a good found family. I love that trope,” Huang made it clear that her female characters are friends and the guys are all on the same team together. It’s natural for cameos to happen. “When I write a story, I do think about these natural points where I can bring in these other people without it feeling forced. For the Gods of the Game series, there are these built-in moments when Noah is playing or at training, and he can talk to the guys.”

It’s a little harder when it comes to the girls, as they don’t work together. They need to have points where they meet up as friends, so Carina gets a life outside of the romance. I likened it to the TV series A Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, where they end up meeting up regularly to talk about life, work, relationships, and just anything in general, because we all need people like that in our lives.

Building interconnected books takes time and planning, though, and Huang always starts with knowing how many books there will be in a series. In this case, it will be three, and as Huang affectionately called it, “a neat little trilogy.”

For Gods of the Game, she knew that Scarlett and Asher were going to be the leads of the first book, revealing that, “When you’re starting out a new world and a new series, that first book and first draft is often an exploration.”

She started out the series by knowing about Scarlett, but not about her brother in The Striker plot. That came as the story developed, and she could see where the dynamics were going. Like many authors, she thinks a story is going to go a certain way, and then there’s a twist or a turn. It doesn’t always make sense, and it’s not something she can explain, but she says that a lot of being an author is writing outlines and then never sticking to them.

Don’t expect any sequels to the stories, though. While we get to see the couples appear in other books now and then, Huang doesn’t think a sequel will work, because then she has to have “some sort of drama or conflict.” She likes to imagine her characters living happily ever after, and she can show that through the standalone stories.

I did have to ask if there is a character — or a couple — she loves writing the most, but that’s like choosing your children. That being said, she shared, “I love Noah. I love the ones where you have to work a little bit to get to know them, and then it feels like it’s earned.”

She also has a soft spot for the grumpy characters, which perfectly describes Noah. The Keeper is out on Tuesday, Oct. 27, and it brings the Gods of the Game series to its natural conclusion. Now all eyes are on the next series Huang develops.

Fans may have thought they were watching The Real Housewives instead of an NBA game Wednesday night when former ESPN reporter Britt McHenry allegedly threw a drink in a fan’s face during a heated courtside confrontation.

McHenry, who recently became a press adviser at the U.S. State Department, was escorted from Washington, D.C.’s Capital One Arena after the incident, according to Page Six. Now, social media users are weighing in on the messy showdown.

The altercation reportedly began when a group of men seated behind McHenry and a male friend heckled Milwaukee Bucks player Kyle Kuzma and insulted his fiancée, model Winnie Harlow. McHenry allegedly turned around and told the hecklers to “ease up.” But the situation escalated when one man reportedly directed misogynistic remarks at her and threw a drink on her. McHenry then allegedly threw her own drink at him.

Video of the confrontation circulated online, showing McHenry throwing a beverage toward a seated fan as she prepared to leave. According to Page Six, both McHenry and the man were escorted out of the arena.

The reaction on X was largely negative, though some users defended McHenry. “She fought back. Good for her,” one person wrote, while another called for the man to face consequences, posting, “Press charges for battery.” Others were less sympathetic, with one commenter noting, “This isn’t McHenry’s first rodeo.”

The confrontation also drew attention as McHenry left the arena. Fans reportedly booed her and threw rally towels in her direction. Rather than leave quietly, she appeared to blow kisses toward the crowd, adding another dramatic moment to the already chaotic scene.

Some commenters also brought McHenry’s role in the Trump administration into the discussion, adding a political dimension to the online backlash. Others defended her, arguing that she was reacting after allegedly being targeted first.

The incident has also revived memories of McHenry’s infamous 2015 confrontation with a towing-company employee. A video of the incident showed the then-ESPN reporter insulting the worker’s education, appearance, and job after her car was towed. ESPN suspended McHenry for one week.

McHenry later said the video had been heavily edited, while acknowledging her behavior. She subsequently worked as a Fox News commentator before taking her current government role.

Representatives for McHenry and the State Department declined to comment to Page Six. It remains unclear whether either party will face further consequences over the latest altercation.

Meghan Markle responded to the child pornography allegations against her father, Thomas Markle Sr., shedding light on why she hasn’t allowed him to see or contact her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. 

After the report was revealed on Thursday, October 22, Markle shared a statement with People saying, “I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed.”

While the recent allegations against Markle Sr. are a result of his son, Thomas Markle Jr.’s (the Duchess of Sussex’s half-brother), report to detectives in the Philippines, Meghan and the authorities did have prior knowledge of allegations against Markle Sr.

Her statement continued, “In 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. That letter was subsequently shared with me. It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father, and I was given assurances that these were being investigated.”

Markle continued, “I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them.”

She added, “I trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families. Although the breadth of what has now been uncovered is more sickening than one could ever imagine, my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children.”

The Sun first reported the allegations against Markle Sr., revealing that his son told the police he had discovered “hundreds, if not thousands” of images at his father’s house in the Philippines. Markle Sr., who moved back to the U.S. in May after having a stroke, no longer lives in the Cebu home. 

Markle Jr. told The Sun, “When I found this material I was horrified, and I had no option but to report my dad. I have supported, cared for him and helped him for years, but that stops now.” He added, “I won’t speak to my father ever again unless I’m called to give evidence against him.”

The Duchess of Sussex has not spoken to her father in eight years. Per The Sun, a source said, “Now maybe people will finally understand why she has had nothing to do with her father since 2018.”

As of now, Markle Sr. has not publicly commented on the allegations.

The bright lights of Times Square, views of the Statue of Liberty and horse-drawn carriage rides through Central Park are all staples of a first-time visit to New York City. But now, the New York City Council has voted to put an end to one of these iconic NYC traditions.

In an Oct. 22 vote, the New York City Council passed legislation that would phase out horse-drawn carriage rides by June 1, 2028, bringing an end to a tradition that has been part of the city for 168 years.

The legislation requires Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office to put together a plan by next April to help the more than 150 remaining drivers and others who work in the industry to find jobs, reports NBC News. It requires City Hall to come up with a program that provides job referrals, education, and career counseling for the displaced workers, and allows the administration to consider a form of compensation for those affected by the end to the Central Park tradition.

“The mayor will sign this bill,” said a spokesperson for the mayor after the vote, “and the Mamdani administration is working every day to ensure we can do so while providing the strongest possible protections for the owners and workers in this industry.”

The vote follows years of concerns about animal welfare and public safety. The latest push to end the carriage rides came after the death of a teenage tourist in a carriage-related incident in June 2026.

Still, longtime carriage drivers are speaking out with concern about how they’ll make a living or care for their animals with the ban in place.

“Without a job, how can I take care of my horses?” Alexus Lawson, a 28-year-old carriage driver, told NBC News. Another driver, Medet Fidan, 56, said, “I think the city is leaving us a big mess. We’re going to lose our businesses, we’re going to lose our jobs, we’re going to lose our livelihoods.”

Imagine sitting at your local coffee shop and seeing Kate Middleton walk through the door. That is exactly what happened to a group of stunned patrons when the Princess of Wales made an unexpected stop at Cafe 98 in Norfolk, England.

As patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), which runs the charity shop, Kate toured the small business. However, one patron wasn’t satisfied with just catching a glimpse of the royal. They engaged her in a warm, personal conversation.

In a video clip posted to Hello! Magazine’s Instagram, Kate was seen entering the store, only to be called over by a customer seated at a nearby table. The video’s caption read, “Imagine popping in for a coffee and bumping into the Princess of Wales! Kate surprised customers at Café 98 in Norfolk today, and one delighted shopper even asked if she wanted to see her purchases! Kate burst into laughter before happily agreeing.”

“Do you want to see my purchases?” the patron asks in the clip.

Additionally, during her cafe visit, Kate shared that her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis will have a school break soon. She said, “My children break up tomorrow, and I can’t wait to have them all home.”

Hello! Magazine spoke to shopper Denise Ashton, who spoke to the Princess of Wales about her children. Ashton explained, “She said she’s looking forward to George coming home – she’s missed him. They may be going somewhere [during the break].”

Prince George is in his first year at Eton College. Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis attend Lambrook School, where Kate Middleton and Prince William are involved parents.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall near Rockport, Texas, as a Category 4 hurricane in August 2017. It brought torrential rainfall and severe flooding to Houston and surrounding communities, while 68 deaths were reported by the National Hurricane Center in Texas due to the storm.

Watt proceeded to launch an online fundraiser shortly after the hurricane hit, initially setting a goal of $200,000. His donation kickstarted the fundraiser, which gained wide support from donors across the United States.

“Throughout this decision-making process, what mattered to me most was ensuring that the entirety of the funds would be utilized here in Houston and the surrounding areas for those who were affected most by Hurricane Harvey,” Watt said in a press release.

The proceeds were designated to support four nonprofit organizations: Americares, Feeding America, SBP and Save the Children. The funds were intended to address healthcare needs, provide food assistance, support home repairs and restore childcare centers.

The Hurricane Harvey relief campaign eventually reached $41.6 million by August 2018. In an update by the Texans, it was revealed that the funds collected by Watt’s fundraiser were use to repair and rebuild over 600 homes, as well as over 420 childcare centers.

Over 26 million meals were also distributed to the people affected, while also providing medicine to 10,000 patients and physical and medical health services to 6,500 victims, among many others.

Imagine being an actor and meeting a man in the actual role you played on screen. Now imagine that role is President. That’s what happened to Michael Douglas, and he says the sitting president of the United States made it happen in a White House receiving line.

Douglas shared the story with Bill Maher while promoting his new memoir, One Helluva Ride. The moment traces back to The American President, the 1995 romantic comedy in which he played widowed President Andrew Shepherd opposite Annette Bening.

“I did American President and I loved it, and there’s a scene in the movie where we’re having a dinner for… the French prime minister,” Douglas recalled. Not long after the film’s release, life imitated art. “I get an invitation from the White House. President Clinton is inviting me to a dinner at the White House for President Chirac from France. How cool is this?”

The Clintons hosted that state dinner for Jacques Chirac on Feb. 1, 1996. As the guests filed toward the Clintons and the Chiracs, Douglas noticed something unusual. “He looks at me and I see him whispering something to President Chirac,” he said.

When Douglas reached the front of the line, Clinton had a plan. “He goes, ‘Michael, come here. You stand here. You stand here where I am,’” Douglas said. Clinton then took a spot in the line himself and greeted his guest. “He says, ‘Hello, Mr. President.’”

Douglas still has the photos. “I have this series of pictures and it’s just… it’s like if they could see me now,” he said. “It’s one of those moments.”

Clinton has told his own version of the friendship. At a London charity gala in 2006, he joked that during his presidency he had tried to talk Douglas into taking his place for an hour so he could have a break, and that the actor had no trouble turning him down.

The film’s influence reached well beyond that night. Aaron Sorkin wrote the script, and Douglas said director Rob Reiner told him the first draft ran long. “First draft of American President, Rob tells me, was 375 pages long,” Douglas said. Much of the material that was cut found a second life. Sorkin’s series The West Wing, Douglas said, “was predominantly based on a lot of the pages that were cut out of the American President movie.” Other accounts put Sorkin’s first draft at about 385 pages, and note that one unused storyline became the basis for the 1999 pilot.

For Douglas, the blend of politics and celebrity seems to run in the family. During the 1960s, his father, Kirk Douglas, made goodwill tours abroad for the U.S. Information Agency, presenting films such as Spartacus to audiences overseas. “They took movie stars like my father and they sent them on tours,” Douglas told Maher.

Three decades after he played a president on screen, Douglas still keeps the photos from the night he got to stand in for a real one.

After a decade of touring together again, Guns N’ Roses are preparing to take a break from the road. But fans shouldn’t worry: Slash says the band has plenty of music waiting to be finished.

The legendary guitarist revealed that Guns N’ Roses plan to step away from touring in 2027 to focus on new material, raising hopes for their first full-length album of entirely new songs since reuniting with Slash and Duff McKagan in 2016.

Speaking on the October 12 episode of SiriusXM’s Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk, Slash reflected on the band’s recent performances and what could come next.

“The last U.S. run that we just finished was the best U.S. run that I feel like we’d done since it started,” he said, according to Blabbermouth.

The guitarist explained that the band will finish its remaining concerts in Asia and Oceania in November and December before taking time away from the stage. “Next year basically Guns is off,” Slash confirmed.

But that doesn’t mean the musicians will be taking a vacation. “We have so much material, and it’s all over the place,” he said, explaining that the biggest challenge is finding enough time to bring everything together.

According to Slash, writing music individually while traveling isn’t the problem. Getting Axl Rose, McKagan and himself into the same room is another story. “Getting us together and trying to do that while you’re touring is next to impossible,” he admitted.

The news comes after Guns N’ Roses released “Atlas” and “Nothin’” in December 2025, two songs originally developed during the band’s earlier recording sessions and later reworked by Slash and McKagan.

In a separate January interview with Audacy, Slash explained that those tracks were the last of the previously unreleased material the reunited musicians had revisited. He also revealed the band’s longer-term ambition: “The next record that we’re gonna do is gonna be all new original stuff.”

Although Guns N’ Roses haven’t announced a release date or confirmed that recording sessions are scheduled, Slash’s latest comments suggest that 2027 could finally give the band the time it needs to turn those ideas into a new album.

Jimmy Fallon has a new reason to laugh at Donald Trump. The Tonight Show host roasted the president after a strange noise he made during a recent rally in South Carolina caught viewers’ attention, and the moment has already inspired a dance remix.

During Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Fallon played a clip of Trump speaking at the rally, insisting it’s real, where the president appeared to make an unusual sound while discussing his decision to appoint a governor to a position at the United Nations.

“I’d say 90% of the reason I took the governor — uhp,” Trump said before continuing his remarks.

Fallon immediately replayed the clip, inviting the audience to hear the noise a second time. The sound prompted laughter from the crowd, and the comedian offered his own description of what viewers had just heard.

“It’s like a burp, a hiccup, and a dry-heave all in one,” Fallon joked.

He then delivered another punchline, comparing the noise to something Melania Trump might have made on her wedding night. The audience responded with more laughter as Fallon continued piling on the jokes.

The host also referenced Trump’s repeated MRI scans, quipping that the president had been in so many MRI machines that he now sounded like one.

“Uhp.”

But the moment didn’t end with Fallon’s commentary. The late-night host revealed that Trump’s unusual noise had already been turned into a dance remix, playing a clip that incorporated the sound into a repetitive beat alongside the president’s remarks.

Fallon was impressed by the unexpected musical creation, calling it a “banger” as the audience cheered.

The jokes came as Trump campaigned across the country ahead of the midterm elections. Fallon also jabbed at the president’s comments during the same South Carolina rally, when Trump claimed he had called Google’s CEO to ask about changing the names of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to the American Ocean and Trump Ocean.

“Once again, 12 days before this election, it’s good to see him locked in on the really big issues,” Fallon quipped.

Some 1980s hits are remembered for their catchy hooks, while others have a surprising story behind how they became famous. After the Fire’s “Der Kommissar” falls into both categories because the new wave favorite was actually a cover of a song by an Austrian pop star.

The British band released its English-language version in 1982, reworking a track originally recorded by Falco, the European singer who would later become internationally famous for “Rock Me Amadeus.”

‘Der Kommissar’ Started as a European Hit

Falco, whose real name was Johann Hölzel, recorded the original “Der Kommissar” in 1981. Written with Robert Ponger, the German-language song became a major hit in Europe, reaching No. 1 in Austria and Germany. Its title translates roughly to “The Commissioner,” and its lyrics tell a story involving young people, drugs and police.

After the Fire put its own spin on the song, adding English lyrics while keeping the recognizable melody and infectious new wave sound. The adaptation helped introduce the track to a wider English-speaking audience.

After the Fire’s Version Became a Top 5 Hit

After the Fire’s “Der Kommissar” eventually reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in 1983. The single also received a boost from MTV, where its music video found an audience during the network’s early years.

The success was especially striking because the band had announced its breakup in December 1982, before the song reached its American chart peak. The track became the group’s defining hit in the United States, even as the band’s future was already uncertain.

Falco Had His Own Connection to the Hit

Although After the Fire scored the bigger American pop hit with its English version, Falco’s original remained an important part of his career. He later achieved worldwide fame with “Rock Me Amadeus,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986.

After inheriting Berkshire Hathaway stock from a family trust in 1996, she founded the Sunshine Lady Foundation, a private philanthropic organization focused on empowering individuals through education.

The foundation funds college degree programs, certification programs and professional licensure programs for incarcerated individuals, helping them gain skills and access opportunities for a better future.

Through her “retail philanthropy,” Doris Buffett personally called people in need one by one to learn about their circumstances and determine how she could help.

Moreover, the organization awards grants to programs that support incarcerated individuals and their transition back into society.

For over two decades before her death in 2020, Warren Buffett’s sister donated more than $200 million of her own money to help people in need.

“My life’s more interesting than it’s ever been,” she said in a statement as cited by Sunshine Lady Foundation on its official website. “I’m glad to have this much joy at the end of my life.”

At that time, her mission was to give away her entire fortune before she died.

“If you’ve created your own problems, don’t bother to call Doris,” the 96-year-old business magnate said. “If some undeserved blow has upended you, however, she will spend both her money and time to get you back on your feet. Her interest in you will be both personal and enduring.”

It’s hard to imagine U2 without Bono and The Edge. Their names have become almost as recognizable as the band’s biggest hits, from “With or Without You” to “Beautiful Day.” But before they became international rock stars, the two musicians went by some surprisingly strange and hilarious nicknames. And as The Edge recently revealed, the whole band was involved.

In a new interview with The New York Times Bono and The Edge looked back on their early days in Dublin, where they formed U2 as teenagers in 1976.

Bono explained that the band was inspired by the Ramones, whose members adopted stage names to create larger-than-life rock identities. “We wished to escape suburbia and discover these other selves,” the singer recalled.

But according to The Edge, the names weren’t always intended to sound particularly cool. As reported by Guitar Player, Bono’s earliest nickname was the extraordinary Steinrich Van Haitian Bang Bang Bang.

The Edge, whose real name is David Evans, was briefly known as Inchicore before settling on the name that would follow him throughout his career.

And the other members weren’t spared. Bassist Adam Clayton was once called Mrs. Byrnes, while drummer Larry Mullen Jr. went by the Jam Jar. “We were borrowing a lot from Monty Python,” The Edge explained, referring to the British comedy troupe famous for its absurd humor.

The revelations come as U2 celebrate their 50th anniversary, a milestone few rock bands reach with their original lineup intact.

Despite five decades together, The Edge believes the group’s greatest achievements may still lie ahead. “We genuinely think that we might just write the best song we’ve ever written next week,” he said.

From fronting Rufus to launching a hit-making solo career to belting alongside a gospel choir in The Blues Brothers, Chaka Khan has done it all. Now, the Queen of Funk is being celebrated at this year’s Soul Train Awards.

BET announced on Thursday, Oct. 22, that Khan will receive the Classic Soul Honor at the 2026 ceremony, which airs Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on BET and CBS, Billboard reported. BET President Louis Carr called the 73-year-old singer “the embodiment of soul music” in a statement.

It’s hard to argue with that. Born Yvette Stevens in Chicago, Khan broke through in the early 1970s as the powerhouse voice of Rufus, scoring hits including “Tell Me Something Good” and “Sweet Thing.” She released her debut solo album, Chaka, in 1978, featuring “I’m Every Woman,” and later topped the charts with the Prince-penned “I Feel for You.” According to People, she has notched eight No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

The Soul Train honor caps a remarkable year. In 2026 alone, she received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, along with honors at the Resonator Awards and the Black Women in Music Dinner, Billboard reported. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.

She’s not slowing down, either. Khan released her 13th studio album, Chakzilla, in September, featuring Sia, Snoop Dogg and Lenny Kravitz. She told People in May that the title had a playful origin: “When I was a kid, I really liked the Godzilla movies.” She added that she was excited to be singing pop again and hoped fans would love where she was coming from.

More than five decades after her voice first hit the airwaves, Khan is still the standard so many singers chase. This latest honor celebrates a musical legacy that continues to resonate across generations.

Every single micro-interaction in our daily lives carries weight, acting as a subtle signal of our confidence, emotional presence and intentionality. The language we choose when acknowledging someone’s gratitude shapes how others perceive our attention to detail and self-assurance. While saying “no problem” is meant to reassure the listener that they haven’t burdened you, it unintentionally introduces an inherently negative word—”problem”—into a moment that was meant to celebrate generosity, warmth and mutual respect.

By replacing these habitual, low-energy dismissals with a deliberate, “high-class” alternative, you can instantly elevate your daily communication and build deeper interpersonal relationships across every area of your life.
