Authorities Investigate House Explosion, Home A Total Loss

A neighbor heard a loud explosion prior to a home being engulfed in flames on Wednesday night at 11:30 p.m. at 321 Cash St., Sullivan. The home was reportedly vacant at the time and was allegedly previously owned by Amber Burt.
Sullivan firefighters and Sullivan police responded to the home which was fully involved when they arrived on the scene.

The Sullivan Board of Aldermen participated in more than an hour of discussions during the requests and petitions portion of their regular meeting on Tuesday night, Mar. 2.
Three different people addressed the council during this portion of the meeting all expressing concerns of the city utility rates, hiring of an economic developer in the city and the city’s reserve funding.

Missouri ASA Softball Announces Plans For 2010 Season

The Missouri Amateur Softball Association has announced plans for the 2010 season. The MASA Board of Directors met in Rolla in October, and the Amateur Softball Association of America National Council met in Reno, NV in November.

For the second year in a row, Sullivan was the victim of proximity.
Despite being one of the best teams in the area, they were no match for St. Francis Borgia.
Any other district and the Eagles may have back-to-back championships. Sullivan went 19-8 in 2009-2010 in Blair Thompson’s second season. The Eagles nearly tied for the conference championship again, and they also boasted the highest scoring offense in the conference.

Tacony Manufacturing is participating in the “Dislocated Worker Internship Services” by sponsoring Connie DeWitt who lost her position when Briggs and Stratton closed. After the shock of losing her job, DeWitt enrolled at Metro Business  College in Rolla to learn a new profession as an Administrative Assistant.

Three separate issues facing the Bourbon Police Department and the municipal court were discussed at the city’s workshop last Tuesday night.
Mayor Leonard Armstrong called for the workshop after Police Chief Don Taylor brought several requests to the aldermen at their Feb. 16 meeting.
Armstrong told Taylor that a workshop was necessary so the board could come in and vote on matters without using their monthly meeting to take up discussion.

New locations could be in store for the Bourbon Police Department and the municipal court, although it may not be anytime soon.
At the city’s workshop last Tuesday night, the aldermen discussed moving the police department and court out of their current building on Pine St. The police department may be moved near the city shed while the court would be moved to the basement of city hall after the renovations are complete.

Students from the Bourbon Seventh-day Adventist School recently visited the office of Leonard Armstrong, mayor of Bourbon. The trip was a part of the students’ study of local government.
We talked to the mayor and asked him a lot of questions about Bourbon government.

Dear Editor,
Do I understand this correctly?
When students don’t learn properly, it is the teachers’ faults, is it? Even when their parents are the first generation immigrants, hence often academically disadvantaged? to help with the homework?
So instead of assisting teachers, students and parents, a certain Rhode Island school district administration has decided to fire all teachers?
Hmmm, I wonder how many will apply for the teaching job for the coming school year—probably zero!
