Wiese Lifts Sullivan Over New Haven

Josh Wiese’s bases-loaded double in the seventh inning Thursday lifted Sullivan 18U lifted Sullivan to a 5-2 victory over New Haven.

Wiese had two doubles and four RBIs. His three-run double in the seventh snapped a 2-2 tie.

Wiese and a parade of Sullivan pitchers were locked into a duel with New Haven’s Owen Borcherding.

Borcherding cuffed Sullivan’s batters until the fifth when Braden Carey put the first run on the board with a two-out single.

Wiese followed up with a double to give Sullivan a 2-0 lead.

New Haven tied the game in the sixth.

Wiese came up again with one out in the seventh and his double put the game out of reach. 

The game moved along at a quick pace as the pitchers dominated through the first four innings.

Wiese went the first two innings, throwing just 21 pitches. He struck out three and New Haven couldn’t get the ball out of the infield.

Cy Cape had the game’s first hit when he bounced a single to center with one out in the third, but Borcherding got out of the inning unscathed.

Logan McCummiskey followed in the third. He issued a one-out walk, but the inning ended when Blayten Nolie threw out a runner trying to steal.

In the fourth, he fell behind 3-0 to Jared Hamlet, only to strike him out looking. New Haven sent the minimum number of batters up through four innings.

Sullivan got going with two outs in the fifth. After Sam Turilli was hit by a pitch, Borcherding struck out the next two batters. Turilli stole second and Cape kept the inning alive with another single to center. That put runners on the corners for Carey, who stroked an RBI single.

Wiese tagged a double to score Cape and put Sullivan up 2-0.

Turilli took over in the fifth. August Panhorst had New Haven’s first hit and he moved up to second on a passed ball. He followed with a pair of groundouts to third, which failed to move Panhorst up. After a walk to Borcherding, he ended the inning with a strikeout.

Alex Branson followed in the sixth. After a strikeout of Groner, Wes Hinson reached on an error at short. Hamlet singled past third and Mistler’s RBI single cut it to 2-1.

A balk scored Hamlet to tie the game at 2-2.

Branson struck out the next two batters to keep the game tied.

Bryan Payne led off the seventh by reaching on an error at third. Tyler Hopen hit a bloop single to right. Carey singled to load the bases and Wiese unloaded them, giving Sullivan a 5-2 lead.
