Weather Puts Skids On Union Tournament

For the second time in three years, weather put the skids on the Union girls basketball tournament.

Saturday’s finals are postponed with no makeup date set at press time.

Sullivan is scheduled to play Francis Howell Central for third place. The Lady Eagles (8-4) lost to Jefferson City 43-18 and defeated Borgia 47-31.

In 2017, Sullivan and Jefferson City were set to play for the championship until weather intervened. The game was made up a month later with Sullivan prevailing over the Jays, who entered as the No. 1 team in Class 5.

The circumstances were a little similar Monday, as they entered again as the top team in Class 5.

Jeff City (15-0) used a powerful defensive effort to stop the Lady Eagles. Sullivan was held scoreless in the second quarter and trailed 25-5 at the break. They outscored the Jays 10-8 in the third quarter, but the offense slumped again in the final period.

Sullivan did fare better defensively than Borgia, which was walloped 68-41 against the Lady Jays three nights later.

Mallory Shetley scored eight points to lead Sullivan on a night where they shot just 7-33 from the field and 2-20 beyond the arc.

Kya Harbour had seven points and Vittoria Polanowski three.

Kara Daly led Jeff City with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Borgia

It was Sullivan’s defense leading the way Tuesday against St. Francis Borgia.

The Lady Eagles held Borgia to just 31 percent shooting and limited the Knights to just 16 points through the first three quarters.

Sullivan came out with a 47-31 win.

Shetley and Harbour each scored 10 points on a night where the Lady Eagles were 50 percent beyond the arc.

Ryee Denbow stepped up to hit three 3-pointers, while Harbour and Johanning each knocked down a pair.

All nine of Denbow’s points came on her treys. Johanning finished with eight points. Katie Creek and Riley Lock scored five.

Sullivan led 10-6 after one quarter. Both offenses stalled in the second quarter. The Lady Eagles led 13-9.

They turned it around with a 17-7 third quarter run and established a 30-16 lead going into the final period.

Avery Lackey and Grace Gettemeier were the only reliable scorers for the Knights, each providing 11 points.

Borgia’s other players combined to go 3-20 from the floor.
