Washington Deals Post 18 First League Loss

Sullivan struck the first blow against Washington Tuesday in a battle of two unbeaten teams in the Ninth District standings, but it was Post 218 emerging with the win.

Washington answered Sullivan’s run in the first inning with three in the bottom half, one in the second and three more in the third. Joe Hackmann struck out 12 and kept Post 18 off the board across the final six innings for a 7-1 win.

Garrett Juergens, who has spent the entire season blowing hitters away, took the loss. He allowed six hits and four walks in five innings. He struck out eight. Three of the four runs he allowed were earned.

Joshua Wiese pitched one inning and allowed three runs (two earned). He struck out one and walked two.

Tuesday’s game started out like many before it. Juergens led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch with Wiese batting. Hackmann walked Joshua Earney with two outs, but struck out Collin Immekus.

Washington countered with a leadoff walk from Leviticus Weber. Bryce Mayer singled to left and Jack Czeschin walked to load the bases. Hackmann helped himself out with a double to score two runs. Juergens struck out Will Heggemann, but an infield single from Brandon Stahlman brought in another run, giving Post 218 a 3-1 lead.

Trevor Abernathy caught Stahlman trying to swipe second and Joshua Garbs struck out.

Washington added another run in the second, started again by a walk. Drew Holtmeyer drew a free pass and advanced to second on a single by Weber. Holtmeyer later scored on a fielder’s choice.

Sullivan threatened in the third after Alec Bell walked and Juergens reached base on an infield single. Hackmann struck out Wiese and Abernathy on six pitches, then caught Earney looking, stranding two runners.

He retired six straight batters until Braden Carey led off the fifth inning with a single to right. Hackmann sat down nine straight to end the game.
