Track Teams Begin Season Friday At Blair Oaks

Sullivan's track and field teams open the season Friday at Blair Oaks.

The boys are coached by Zack Carey and the girls by Emily Edens. Sullivan's boys return one state qualifier in senior Trevor Key, while the Lady Eagles will get a multiple state qualifier in Bria Jones.

Key is looking to build off a big junior season where at districts he took first in 300-meter hurdles, third in the 110-meter hurdles and was part of the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams that advanced to sectionals.

Key finished second in both hurdles events at sectionals, and then advanced to state where he took 12th in the 110-meter and 13th in the 300-meter.

Jones returns to the track a year after she opted to play soccer. She was a state qualifier in multiple events her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Kristin Lucas and Emily Hernandez are two senior field athletes who advanced to sectionals last season.

Lucas finished second in the javelin and Hernandez fourth at districts. Lucas was third in shot put. At sectionals, she took sixth in both events. Her throw in the shot put set a personal record. Hernandez finished eighth in the javelin at sectionals.

Also looking to break through to state is junior Blaine Blankenship. Blankenship had a strong season in the triple jump and was part of the sectional-qualifying relay teams. He took second in the triple jump at districts, then took sixth at sectionals.

Sullivan's boys have 44 athletes on their roster. The girls list 36 athletes.
