Thomure Drives In 5, Sullivan Coasts Past St. Clair

Kylee Thomure drove in five runs, Addison Purvis hit her fourth home run and had four RBIs and Sullivan defeated St. Clair 17-2 Tuesday at Bank of Sullivan Ballpark.

Thomure cleared the bases with two outs in the first when she lofted a fly ball between shortstop and left field. The ball had enough hang time to score three runs and give Sullivan a 5-0 lead.

She came up with the bases loaded again in the second and singled to add two more runs to the board.

Hannah Cox got the start for Sullivan a day after Purvis threw against Rock Bridge. Cox struck out six, allowed four hits and one earned run.

Sullivan (8-2) improved to 3-0 in the Four Rivers Conference and have outscored opponents 36-3. Tuesday’s game was the fifth this season where Sullivan has scored 10 runs or more, but the lineup continues to evolve as head coach Ashley Crump tries to find the right combination.

“I don’t feel like we’ve found it,” Crump said. For Tuesday’s lineup, Purvis, Hanna Johanning and Hannah Cox occupied the top three spots in the order. Between the three of them, they have hit 14 home runs and driven in 45 runs.

Crump was pleased with the offensive performance, but says there is room for improvement, especially on defense. Sullivan committed two errors.

“It’s crazy that we’re 8-2, but it’s not where we need to be,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. The ball gets hit and we’re…not ready for it. Mentally, we’re not staying focused every pitch. They think it’s going somewhere else. I want them to want the ball.”

Sullivan’s offense overcame the errors with an eight-run first inning and five-run second inning. Eleven of the 13 runs were scored with two outs.

Abbey Daniel ended the game with a sacrifice fly in foul territory near third base. Johanning, who was standing on third, saw that nobody was covering third and scored.

Sullivan scored just two batters in when Purvis led off with a walk and stole second. She scored on a double by Johanning, who went to third on the throw. Cox plated Johanning with a sacrifice fly to center.

With two outs, Abbey Daniel singled and went to second on an error. Kloey Blanton walked and Madison Decker was hit by a pitch. That set up Thomure’s bases-loaded double to give Sullivan a 5-0 lead. Madyson Stahl had an RBI double and Purvis hit a 3-0 pitch over the center field fence to open up an 8-0 lead.

Sullivan made two quick outs to start the second, but Daniel singled and advanced to second. Blanton singled and Decker walked to again load the bases for Thomure. She singled to center to drive in two more and put Sullivan up 10-0. Stahl added an RBI single and Purvis added two more RBIs, giving the Lady Eagles a 13-0 lead.

Blanton had an RBI single with two outs in the third.

St. Clair loaded the bases with walks in the fourth. A passed ball with Cox batting made it 15-2. Another passed ball with Lohden batting gave Sullivan a 16-2 lead. Daniel’s sacrifice fly ended the game.
