Sullivan Uses Balanced To Scoring To Defeat Nerinx Hall

Sullivan had three players finish in double figures Monday as they pulled away in a 50-42 win at home against Nerinx Hall.

Mallory Shetley led the way with 15 points. Kya Harbour and Riley Lock each scored 12 points for the Lady Eagles, who won for the fifth time in six games.

Sullivan (9-4) had a 41-34 lead cut down to two with just 3:25 left, but Shetley and Harbour combined to score the final nine points that carried the Lady Eagles across the finish line.

Shetley wreaked havoc on the Markers’ offense. She roamed every inch of the court and finished with six blocks and four steals. Two of her steals came in the final two minutes, giving Sullivan the stops they needed to stop Nerinx’s rally.

Katie Creek had five points, Vittoria Polanowski scored four and Rylee Denbow added two to round out the scoring for the Lady Eagles.

Sullivan trailed throughout most of the first quarter and struggled at the free throw line. They were down 10-6 going into the second period, but Shetley keyed an 8-0 run. She scored the first basket of the period, then Harbour connected on a three from the corner. Shetley jumped an inside pass, brought it down, dribbled to the corner and found Creek on the wing for a 3-pointer. Sullivan went up 14-10 and Nerinx Hall called a timeout.

Denbow sank a jumper from the free throw line, then Hanna Johanning found Lock on the baseline to give Sullivan an 18-12 lead with 4:38 remaining in the half.

Nerinx countered with a 7-0 run and seized the lead on a short jumper by Allie Brown with 2:56 left. Harbour would tie the game with a free throw at the 1:24 mark.

The Markers took the lead early in the second half, but Sullivan reclaimed it on a 3-pointer by Lock with 2:21 to go. Mackenzie Duff tied the game with a free throw and Madison Duff gave Nerinx the lead with a triple, putting the Markers ahead 29-26 with 1:27 left.

Lock and Mackenzie Duff traded baskets and Nerinx posted a 31-28 lead with six seconds remaining in the period, but Sullivan hurried the ball down court. Lock drained a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to tie the game at 31-all.

Sullivan went up 41-34 on a three-point play by Shetley and a 3-pointer by Harbour with 4:18 to play. Nerinx responded with a drive by Mackenzie Duff and a 3-pointer by Lyndsey Heckel to trim the Lady Eagles’ lead to two.

The Markers had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Shetley anticipated an entry pass to the post. Sullivan took possession and after Polanowski missed a pair of free throws, Shetley grabbed control of the rebound. She finished with an inside spin move at the basket to move the Lady Eagles ahead 43-39.

With 1:18 left, Harbour hit a jumper from the mid-range. Shetley stole the ensuing inbound pass and was fouled. She converted one of two at the stripe, which gave the Lady Eagles a 46-39 lead.

Nerinx would get as close as four, but Harbour hit three of her next four throws to put Sullivan comfortably ahead.
