Sullivan Rips New Haven 13-3

Sullivan needed six innings to dispatch New Haven on Wednesday, winning 13-3 at “Sunny” Jim Bottomley Park.

With six runs in the first inning, Sullivan was well on their way to victory.

They battered Owen Borcheding, who held them in check a week earlier when the two teams met in New Haven. Sullivan got to Borcheding late in the game, but they pounced early the second time around.

New Haven’s defense didn’t do their pitcher any favors, committing three errors in the opening frame.

Braden Carey led off with a walk and back-to-back singles by Josh Wiese and Logan McCummiskey loaded the bases.

Blayten Nolie tagged a double deep to center field to unload them, which gave Sullivan a 3-0 lead.

Alex Branson brought him in with a single and an error that allowed him to take second. He scored when Sam Turilli drilled a ball to short that skipped off the fielder’s glove and into right field. Sullivan went on top 5-0.

Cooper Beckett reached on another error at short. With two outs, Carey reached on an infield single to bring home another run.

Sullivan couldn’t take advantage of another double by Nolie in the second, but they added on in the third when Wiese hit a ground rule double to score Beckett.

Nolie got on base for the third time after a leadoff walk in the fourth. He stole second and would come around to score on a passed ball with Turilli at bat.

Branson, who started for Sullivan, handled New Haven through the first four innings. He allowed two infield singles. 

New Haven got on the board in the fifth after singles by Bryner Frankenberg and Jarrett Hamlett. Wes Hinson reached on an error at second to score Frankenberg, but Hamlett was thrown out on a 2-5-6-2 sequence to end the inning.

Sullivan added two more runs when they came up to bat in the bottom half. Jordan Rice reached on a single and an error then scored on Carey’s double. Wiese hit his second double to give Sullivan a 10-1 lead.

New Haven would get both runs back against Justin Lowe in the sixth, but Sullivan put the game away. Lane Blankenship, Cooper Beckett and Bryan Payne all singled. Rice was hit by a pitch to make it 11-3. Two passed balls later, Sullivan had stretched the lead to 13-3, ending the game.
