Sullivan Dominates Owensville In First Round

For the second time in three days, Sullivan went off for 14 3-pointers against the Owensville Dutchmen.

Three days after blasting Owensville 79-45, the Eagles ended their season with a 67-37 victory on Saturday in the first round of the Class 4 District 10 Tournament.

The win sets up a semifinal on Tuesday against Union.

Landon Hoffman couldn’t miss, finishing with six 3-pointers and 20 points. Cody McKinney and Austin Frye added three 3s.

Sullivan was on such a roll beyond the arc that Jacob Hatcher splashed a 35-foot shot near the sideline to beat the buzzer in the first quarter.

Owensville gave Sullivan a fight through the first quarter until the Eagles went on a 16-4 run to close the half.

Hoffman hit two 3s to start the game, but the Dutchmen kept pace. Daxton Mehrhoff ran a fast-break and Trevor Abernathy had a pair of free throws to tie the game at 6-all.

McKinney broke an 8-8 tie with his first 3-pointer. Owensville responded with inside baskets by Brady Smith and Cason Gray, staking the Dutchmen to a 12-11 lead.

Sullivan’s 3-point shooting quickly eviscerated the Dutchmen. McKinney and Frye exchanged 3-pointers, then Hatcher drained his long triple at the buzzer. Sullivan led 20-12.

Abernathy drew Owensville within five on a pull-up 3 and the Eagles, who were quiet through the first four minutes of the second period, came alive on another string of 3s.

Two more 3s by Hoffman, one by McKinney and a basket down low by Hatcher created a 33-17 lead with 1:36 left in the half.

Smith broke up the run on a put-back, followed by Tyler Heidbrink scoring with 51 seconds remaining. Hoffman continued firing from deep as he splashed his fifth trey of the half with 25 seconds to go. Joshua Wiese stole the ball and laid it on a fast-break with four seconds, sending the Eagles into the half with a 38-21 lead.

Owensville would cut the deficit to 41-28 at the 6:20 mark. McKinney scored off an inbounds pass, Adams drove inside and Rohrer added a basket near the rim. Hoffman capped off the run with his sixth 3-pointer. Sullivan led 50-28. Gray hit a floater to break the rally, but Frye countered with another 3-pointer. McKinney had a pair of free throws to end the third quarter with a 55-30 lead.

Adams unleashed another 3 for the Eagles and Wiese scored in the paint to start the running clock.
