Sullivan Defeats Lebanon 5-1 In Tourney Opener

Sullivan opened the Peoples Bank Back To School Classic with a 5-1 win over Lebanon on Friday afternoon at Campbell-Chapman Sports Complex.

The Lady Eagles (1-0) had just five hits, but drew six walks and took advantage of three errors by Lebanon.

Sullivan scored two runs in the second inning, one in the fourth and added two more in the sixth.

Addison Purvis started and went all seven innings, striking out 12, allowing four hits, two walks and just one run.

Purvis retired 11 straight batters until she hit Gress with a pitch with one out in the seventh.

Lebanon threatened to score in the first when Morque reached on an error at shortstop and Blattel singled to center. Purvis struck out Jenkins, but she walked Hazlewood to load the bases. She ended the inning with a strikeout looking.

Sullivan also loaded the bases in the first, but couldn’t come up with a run. Keen walked the first three batters she saw — Emma Weirich, Purvis and Hannah Cox in succession — before getting the first out at home plate on a stolen base attempt by Weirich. With runners at second and third, Kamryn Lohden popped out to short and Kloey Blanton grounded out.

Morgan Bobbitt led off the second with a walk, then went to third on a single by Grace Glaser. Madison Decker dropped a sacrifice bunt that scored Bobbitt and pushed Glaser to third. Sullivan took a 1-0 lead.

Glaser scored on a wild pitch with Mady Stahl batting. Keen struck out Stahl, but gave up consecutive two-out hits to Weirich and Purvis. She retired Cox on a pop-up to get out of the inning.

Lebanon added a run in the top of the third when Blattel hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a groundout. She came around to score a bloop single to short from Hazlewood. Hazlewood advanced to second on the throw home. Purvis stranded her with a strikeout of Keen.

Purvis began cruising from there. She struck out the side in the fourth and got through the fifth on just seven pitches.

Sullivan added an insurance run in the fourth. Decker was safe at first on an error. Kylee Thomure was sent in as a courtesy runner for Decker and she advanced to second on a sac bunt by Stahl. Weirich grounded out, but Thomure moved up to third and scored on an illegal pitch with Purvis batting.

After a perfect sixth by Purvis, Sullivan added two more runs in the bottom half. Glaser walked and advanced to second on a bunt by Stahl. The runners moved into scoring position when Keen whipped the ball to first and off the glove of the fielder. Weirich dropped down a bunt that scored Glaser for a 4-1 lead.

Purvis hit an opposite field line drive to left that wasn’t caught, bringing in Stahl and putting Sullivan up 5-1.

Purvis worked around a hit batter and a two-out single by Hlavacek that eventually put runners in scoring position, but she struck out Morque to end the game.
