Sullivan Blitzes New Haven With Early Run

Sullivan led 22-3 before New Haven scored from the field Monday as the Lady Eagles tallied their fourth straight victory in a 55-27 rout.

Clare Shetley scored 14 points and Mallory Shetley had 12 with New Haven having no answers to stop them.

They combined to shoot 13 of 17 from the floor on a hyperefficient night for Sullivan. Overall, the Lady Eagles (19-4) shot 62 percent from the field, 70 percent on two-pointers and 50 percent (7-14) from beyond the arc.

Bria Jones and Katie Creek each had six points coming on two 3-pointers apiece. Hanna Johanning finished with five. Sophie Sellers had four. Kya Harbour and Lauren Hoffman both had 3’s and ended with three points. Zariah Richards chipped in two.

A year ago, New Haven stunned Sullivan 51-50 on their home floor with largely the same roster. The Lady Eagles were never threatened Monday. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead and were up from tip-off. Clare Shetley scored inside on the opening possession. New Haven tossed the ball around the perimeter and turned it over after nearly two minutes. Clare backed down two defenders and scored with ease, then Creek knocked down a 3 in transition, sending the Shamrocks into a timeout.

Emily Engelbrecht put a point on the board for New Haven with a free throw at the 3:57 mark. An inside basket from Mallory Shetley and a post move and putback from Clare Shetley made it 13-1.

Mallory Shetley later stripped the ball from New Haven and found Jones for a 3-pointer, giving Sullivan a 16-3 lead after one quarter.

Sullivan opened the second much like the first ended. Mallory Shetley stole the ball in the corner and it ended with another 3-pointer by Jones. On Sullivan’s next trip down, Mallory Shetley got the ball under the glass, toed the baseline and kicked it out to Creek for Sullivan’s third straight 3-pointer.

Mackenzie Bauer’s triple with 6:12 left finally gave New Haven its first field goal.

Johanning and Hoffman each spotted up for 3’s and Sullivan carried a 34-15 lead into halftime.

The Lady Eagles kept New Haven off the board for more than five minutes in the third quarter, building up a 40-15 lead. Putbacks by Sellers and Clare Shetley gave Sullivan a 44-17 advantage.

The lead swelled to 28 on a basket by Sellers with 5:41 to go. A 3-pointer by Harbour, two free throws by Richards and a fastbreak layup by Johanning sealed the final score.
