Sullivan Aiming For Third Straight District Championship

Sullivan enters the 2018-2019 season looking for a third straight district championship and though they lost their top two scorers from the last two seasons, new head coach Jordan Flora isn’t lowering expectations.

“The expectations are just as high,” said Flora, who has familiarity with some of the players after spending three seasons as middle school coach. “Losing a couple girls, it’s tough, but we have a lot of talent returning.”

Bria Jones and Clare Shetley led the team in most categories the last two seasons, but they were complemented by experienced senior classes. Flora will focus on defining roles and honing defense, which he considers the No. 1 priority.

“Losing (Bria and Clare) makes a difference, but it comes down to roles,” Flora said. “We still have guards who can fill it up.”

Junior Mallory Shetley was third on the team in scoring last season with nearly 12 points per game. She shot 53 percent from the floor and Flora believes teams will collapse on her in the interior, opening up scoring opportunities from the outside.

Senior guard Katie Creek will likely benefit. Creek averaged nearly six points per game and was second on the team in 3-point field goals.

Junior guard Kya Harbour and sophomore guard Hanna Johanning also figure to play more prominent roles. After getting hurt last season, Flora said they will look to get contributions from junior guard Riley Lock.

Defensively, the Lady Eagles were a nightmare for opposing teams last season. They allowed just 37 points per game. With long limbs and quick guards, Sullivan made games uncomfortable. Flora is optimistic they will bring the same intensity.

“I’m excited about it,” he said. “We’re not staying as much in the pack line as (former head coach Jason) Merkel, but we’re quick and can force some turnovers. As long as they are coming out playing hard, we’ll be tough and solid on defense. It comes down to the hard work.”

Sullivan competed at a Jamboree on November 10 against Cardinal Ritter and Parkway North. Flora thought it was a good first impression.

“It went well,” he said. “We played Cardinal Ritter, which was a little quicker. We played solid. Then we played Parkway North and got after them. It’s helpful as a coach to see where we’re at. It put things into perspective.”

Sullivan opened the season Tuesday at home against Rolla.
