Sullivan’s Rally Stalls Against Hermann
Sullivan trailed by 13 midway through the fourth quarter of their Four Rivers Conference opener against Hermann, but they didn’t go quietly.
Making a stand and trying to upset the Bearcats, Sullivan outscored Hermann 10-1 over the final four minutes.
But time ran out on the comeback.
Hermann stole the ball with seconds remaining on the clock and escaped with a 43-39 win.
The Lady Eagles held Hermann to just 27% shooting. Their fourth quarter effort allowed them to creep back in.
Hanna Johanning gave Sullivan a 9-8 lead after one quarter. She sank a 3-pointer with 1:14 remaining.
The two teams swapped the lead over the course of the second quarter.
The lead switched hands six times within a two minute stretch.
Kylee McReynolds tied the game at 19-19 on a jumper just inside the arc, but Hermann added the final four points of the half.
Maya Wideman scored on an inbounds pass with 27 seconds left.
Grace Godat’s putback with 12 seconds to go gave the Lady Bearcats a 23-19 lead.
Johanning opened the second half with her second 3-pointer, but Hermann was off and running.
Kaylyn Powers drilled an uncontested 3 from the wing and Malerie Schutt banked in a shot over two defenders to increase Hermann’s lead to 29-22.
A fastbreak layup by Wideman and two free throws by Grace Winkelmann polished off a 10-0 run and gave Hermann a 33-22 lead.
Johanning’s jumper would send the Lady Eagles into the fourth quarter trailing by single digits, 35-27.
Holly Heldt had a 3-pointer and Schutt powered up a shot near the hoop to give Hermann a 40-27 lead with 5:40 to go.
Abby Peterson had a putback and after a shot by Cydney Moeckli, Peterson converted two free throws to make it 42-31.
Johanning would get the lead down to five, 43-38, on a pair of 3-pointers.
Peterson hit one of two free throws with 25 seconds left to get the deficit down to four.
Sullivan fouled Hermann on the next possession. Missing the front end of a bonus, Sullivan would get the ball back with eight seconds left. The Lady Eagles scrambled down court to get a shot, but Hermann intercepted a pass from Peterson and ran out the clock.
