St. Dominic Grounds Sullivan, Reaches Washington Tourney Finals

Sullivan’s seven-game winning streak was snapped Thursday with a 57-43 loss to St. Dominic in the semifinals of the Washington Tournament.

Jack Niggemeier led a balanced scoring attack for the Crusaders (7-7), who reached the tournament finals.

Due to impending weather, the finals were moved to Wednesday, January 30. The Eagles (10-2) are set to play St. Charles.

The Pirates and Sullivan are the top two seeds respectively.

Cody McKinney scored 20 points to lead the Eagles, while Landon Hoffman provided 14, but St. Dominic bottled up the rest of Sullivan’s offense.

Colton Ward and Josh Wiese each scored three points. Jacob Rohrer had two and Austin Frye one. 

The Crusaders limited Sullivan to just seven 3-pointers. Hoffman downed three, while McKinney had two. Both Ward and Wiese each fired off one.

Sullivan trailed 13-10 after one quarter and 22-15 at the break. They were unable to slow St. Dominic down in the second half, getting outscored 19-15 during the third quarter. 

Brennan Kiger had 14 points and Anthony Lewis scored 11 for the Crusaders. 

St. Dominic entered the tournament on a three-game losing streak. They fell to Fort Zumwalt South, St. Charles West and Cape Girardeau Central, the No. 2 team in Class 4.

Sullivan held the Crusaders’ leading scorer Josh Willenbrink to just three points Thursday. Willenbrink averages close to 13 points. 

Washington

Sullivan bumped off the host Blue Jays 56-41 on Tuesday in the first round. 

Hoffman had a season-high 26 points and splashed seven of 15 attempts from beyond the arc. 

McKinney scored 17 points and was 5-9 on 3-pointers.

Austin Lewis added five and Carter Adams had four. Jacob Hatcher and Jacob Rohrer each scored two.

The Eagles led 18-12 after one quarter and opened up a 34-22 lead at intermission. 

St. Charles

Sullivan plays top-seeded St. Charles for third place on January 30 at 7 p.m. 

St. Charles was blown out by Borgia in the semifinal, 53-39. 

The Pirates are led by 6-6 senior forward Braden Wiggs, who averages 18 points and nine rebounds per game.

Cameron Teson, a 6-0 senior guard, adds 14 points per game for the Pirates.
