Shetley First, Eagles Fifth At Steve Leslie Invitational

Evan Shetley won his weight class Saturday and Sullivan took fifth as a team at the Steve Leslie Invitational in Pleasant Hill. 

The Eagles had the highest finish of any area team. Seventeen varsity squads competed.

Shetley’s championship was his second straight at the tournament. He won the 170-pound weight class last year and moved up to take the 182-pound title. 

Dillon Witt (106) and Isaac Peregoy (170) won third place in their respective weight classes.

Ty Shetley (132) and Ian Kilburn (160) were fifth. Kobie Blankenship (152) came in sixth.

Other wrestlers were Ethan Hines (138), Jonathan Krygiel (145), Trey Eplin (195) and Tristan Brown (285). 

Shetley went 6-0, with a fall over Blue Valley’s Nicholas Schwarz; a 5-1 decision over Prairie View’s Sam Chambers and a fall over St. James’ Donnie Martinez. He won by major decision against Benton’s Alex Barker; a fall against Blue Valley’s Nate Kenney and a 6-4 decision in the championship against Eldon’s Dawson Brandt.

Witt won his first four matches. He pinned Nevada’s JD Downing, forfeit against Owensville’s David Vincent, fall over Pleasant Hill’s Noah Riley and fall over Kirksville’s Chance McKim. He was pinned by Fulton’s Owen Uhls, then clinched third with a 5-0 decision against Chillicothe’s Sheldon Rader.

Peregoy won by major decision against William Chrisman’s Mason Walters. He received a bye, then took another major decision against Blue Valley’s Tanner Sample. In the quarterfinal, he won by decision against Kirksville’s Morgan Wilcox. Clinton’s Isaac Bayless defeated Peregoy with a 2-1 decision, but Peregoy took third with a major decision against Chillicothe’s Donald McCracken.

Ty Shetley received a first-round bye, then defeated Clinton’s Jace King and Prairie View’s Zach Nordgren by fall. He was pinned by Chrisman’s Jose Muravilla. He continued his day with a major decision against Blue Valley’s Jacob Bartlett, then won by sudden victory against King.

Kilburn won by fall against Pleasant Hill’s Will Pryor and decision against Fulton’s David Gibson. He lost by major decision to Chillicothe’s Dawson Wheeler. He pinned Blue Valley’s Luke Vega and took an 8-6 decision against Kirksville’s Parker Laudwig.

Blankenship received a first-round bye, then pinned Clinton’s Martin Gates and Nevada’s Brock Marquardt. He was pinned by Boonville’s Brant Whitaker, then pinned Prairie View’s Damien Kline. In the fifth-place match, he was pinned by Chrisman’s Rico Alaniz.

Hines won matches against Summit Christian Academy’s Nolan Rash and Owensville’s Boston Belk.

Krygiel pinned Boonville’s Lance Marshall, once in the third round and again in the 13th place match.

Eplin pinned Owensville’s Hunter Hutchison and Chillicothe’s Evan Loucks. 

Brown, who took ninth, pinned St. James’ Donald Grouns. He also pinned Summit’s Kooper Reed, Benton’s Really Hubbard and Boonville’s Dalton Williams.
