Roosevelt Tops Borgia For District Title
Roosevelt scored three fourth quarter touchdowns Saturday to defeat Borgia 48-43 and claim the Class 3 District 2 championship.
The Roughriders (11-1) won their first district title since 2005.
Borgia led 36-28 with 8:28 to play in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Alonzo McDonald, but the Roughriders marched back with 20 straight points.
Darrius Jackson caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Alonzo Smith, then Smith hooked up with Ali Hall for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 36-36 with 6:02 left.
Smith broke off a 41-yard run with two minutes to play to put Roosevelt on top 42-36.
Forty seconds later, he picked off Borgia quarterback Sam Heggemann and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory.
Heggemann, who showed off fourth quarter magic in wins against Sullivan and St. Clair, threw a touchdown pass with 56 seconds left to pull the Knights within the final tally.
Roosevelt shredded the Borgia defense for 544 yards. Smith was 13-23 for 240 yards and three touchdowns.
On the ground, he rushed eight times for 66 yards.
Roosevelt gained 304 yards on the ground.
