Rohrer, Wiley Lead Sullivan Past St. Clair

Jacob Rohrer continued his torrid scoring pace to start the season and Jacob Wiley notched his second shutout of the season Thursday in Sullivan’s 4-0 win over St. Clair

Rohrer scored three times — the third time this season he’s had three goals. His 12 goals leads the St. Louis area.

Wiley made three saves as the Eagles (5-0) have jumped out to their best start in program history. There was no letdown Thursday after a thrilling overtime win against Laquey one night earlier.

“We were very physical and aggressive,” said Eagles head coach Bill Kackley. “We probably let off the gas a little bit…trying not to get hurt.”

Kackley said it was an “interesting” second half that featured the teams getting physical.

Sullivan scored all four goals in the first half. Ethan Kackley had the game’s first goal in the 14th minute. Rohrer added the next three, including one on a penalty kick.

Kackley was encouraged by the way Sullivan came out. “[We] get that first conference win and it helps us for districts,” he said. “I’m proud of our guys for the way we played.”

Sullivan has a tough game coming up Thursday against Perryville. Two years ago, the Pirates advanced to the state championship game. They were 17-9 last year and two of their three top scorers were seniors, but leading scorer Cole Gerstenberger and senior goalkeeper Trent Unterreiener return.

Kackley said the team dropped its game against St. Paul Lutheran on Wednesday and the break gives the team a chance to better prepare for its toughest opponent of the season.

Five games in, Kackley is impressed where the team is, saying they are further along. “I thought it might be a rebuilding year, but the kids have bought in and understanding the game better. I’m happy how we’ve played.”
