Rogersville Edges Eagles In Quarterfinals

Sullivan entered the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Class 4 quarterfinal holding a lead, putting them eight minutes away from a Final Four berth.

But Logan-Rogersville eventually took over.

Luke Vandersnick’s turnaround with 3:53 left snapped a tie and with 48 seconds remaining, he penetrated the lane and delivered what would be the dagger. Rogersville held on for a 57-49 win to end Sullivan’s season.

The Eagles (23-7) went from district third seed to taking Rogersville — the seventh-ranked team in Class 4 — down to the wire.

Sullivan trailed by seven midway through the third quarter, but would come back to take the lead on a 3-pointer by Landon Hoffman.

Hoffman paced the Eagles in the first quarter with three 3-pointers as the two teams went back and forth.

Sullivan led 7-6 after Jacob Hatcher went up against two defenders to lay in a basket off the glass, prompting Rogersville to call a timeout with 2:48 left. The Wildcats came out of the break to regain the lead with a 3-pointer by Ryker Strong. Hoffman answered on the other end with his second 3, only to have Joshua Linehan match it. Linehan followed with a three-point play at the 26-second mark to give Rogersville a 15-10 lead. Hoffman came down and buried his third triple to keep it a one-possession game going into the second quarter.

Rogersville struggled to shake the Eagles off. Jacob Rohrer opened the second quarter by dropping in a put-back to tie it at 15-15. Kanon Gipson’s 3-pointer put the Wildcats back ahead, but Austin Frye matched it.

Vandersnick had a second chance bucket with 4:03 left, giving Rogersville a 22-19 lead. Adams fired a 3 from the corner to again tie the game. The Wildcats got a long 2 and a fast-break by Vandersnick to pull ahead 26-22 at the half.

Rogersville would lead 31-24 with 4:31 left after a 3-pointer by Gipson, but the Eagles put together a rally. Cody McKinney had his first 3-pointer at the 3:31 mark and Adams converted a fast-break to tie the game at 31. Vandersnick put Rogersville back on top with a 3-pointer at the 2:42 mark. McKinney matched it, then Hoffman gave the Eagles the lead with his fourth triple. Sullivan carried a 37-35 lead into the fourth quarter.

McKinney split a pair of free throws just 15 seconds into the period. Rogersville quickly provided a response with a three-point play by Blevins. Linehan added another three-point play seconds later to grab a 41-38 lead.

A basket by Frye and a free throw by Hoffman tied the game at 5:58. Vandersnick’s turnaround in the paint put the Wildcats back on top, but McKinney hit two free throws to tie the game at 43.

After another dunk by Blevins, the Eagles again tied the game on free throws, this time getting two from Austin Lewis.

Vandersnick snapped the tie with another turnaround, then with 2:30 left, he was fouled on a put-back, hitting one. Rogersville led 48-45 and Sullivan’s offense struggled to find the basket. Strong had two free throws with 1:27 to give the Wildcats a 50-45 lead. Rohrer brought the Eagles within three on a pair of free throws, but Vandersnick drove the lane with 48 seconds to go, making it 52-47. Sullivan came up empty on their next possession and Rogersville hung on.
