MSHSAA Will Use Championship Factor In 2020-21

The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) will adopt the new championship factor in the 2020-21 school year.

The championship factor uses a six-year record of postseason success to determine the class assignment for private and charter schools.

Under the current system, MSHSAA uses a private school’s raw enrollment and multiplies it by 1.35 to place that school in a class.

Instead, MSHSAA will use six years of postseason data.

The point system will work as follows:

*District champion: 1 point

*State 3rd/4th place: 2 points

*State 2nd place: 3 points

*State champion: 4 points

The points are not cumulative during the season. For example, St. Francis Borgia’s girls volleyball team won the Class 3 state championship last season. They would receive four points, not an additional point for winning districts.

If a school receives:

0-2 points: They will remain classified based on raw enrollment

3-7 points: They will be re-classified one class above on raw enrollment

8+ points: They will be re-classified two classes above on raw enrollment

Each sport will be judged individually.

Going back to St. Francis Borgia, the volleyball program could move up a level, but the softball team may not.

This also could create a scenario where boys and girls basketball programs from the same schools compete in different classes.

Class and district assignments for the fall season will not be released until Friday, Sept. 18.

MSHSAA has altered the date due to some member schools handling the beginning of the year differently.
