MSHSAA Changing Formula For Class Assignments

The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) will not only change the way it assigns non-public schools, but public schools also will see a change.

Last year, MSHSAA approved Proposal 9, which gets schools of closer enrollment to each other in class assignments.

Sullivan saw first-hand in 2017 how the class assignments were out of balance. As one of the smaller Class 4 schools, the Eagles football team was not only placed in the same class, but same district as Camdenton. Camdenton’s enrollment is nearly double that of Sullivan.

The classification will affect just team sports — baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball and volleyball.

Last summer, MSHSAA Communications Director Jason West said the largest school in a class would be no more than double the smallest.

Class 1 schools will remain unchanged and MSHSAA will determine those assignments based on the number of total registrations in that sport.

MSHSAA also will be trying to balance the number of schools in a particular class better.

More classes will be added as a result.
