MSHSAA Allowing For Alternate Fall, Spring Sports

The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) voted Aug. 13 to allow for alternate fall and spring sports seasons.

Schools could choose the alternate seasons if their sport or spots cannot continue in the traditional season due to COVID-19.

The alternate fall season could begin as early as March 12, 2021 and conclude by May 1.

The alternate spring sports season could begin as early as May 14 and end July 10.

“The traditional seasons are still being offered at this time for those schools able to participate,” said MSHSAA Executive Director Dr. Kerwin Urhahn, “Today’s action by the Board of Directors puts into place a plan of action our staff devised in the event a school is not able to participate partially or in whole. This could give those students an opportunity to complete a season in their sport.”

MSHSAA said in a statement that schools could use an alternate season if the sport in question meets certain thresholds, including, but not limited to: length of traditional season participation and access to traditional postseason.

Schools choosing the alternate season for any sport will automatically be included in the alternate spring season.

There is no change to the winter season at this time. Practices can begin Monday, Nov. 2 and it is scheduled to conclude by March 20.

Schools have until Sept. 11 to notify MSHSAA if they intend to join an alternate season, but exceptions could be made if a school is affected by COVID-19.
