McCummiskey, Miller Lead Eagles Past Valley Park
Logan McCummiskey went the distance and Jacob Miller drove in three runs Wednesday as Sullivan hammered Valley Park 8-3.
McCummiskey struck out seven and allowed two earned runs. Miller had three hits to go along with his three RBIs. A two-run single in the sixth pushed Sullivan’s lead from one run to three.
Garrett Juergens added a two-run double in the seventh.
McCummiskey, Will Allen and Braden Carey all had RBIs. Carey drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Sullivan (10-3) won their second straight. McCummiskey improved to 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA.
He battled through trouble in the early innings, protected a lead in the fifth, then sat Valley Park down in order in the final two innings.
Michael Menly tagged McCummiskey for an RBI single in the second after a passed ball put runners in scoring position.
Dominic Copeland led off the third with a triple to center. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Braden Spawr.
Sullivan took command in the fourth against Ethan Schmitt. JD McReynolds and Jacob Hatcher drew one-out walks. Will Allen singled to left to score McReynolds. Schmitt walked Juergens to load the bases and couldn’t find the zone in a four-pitch walk to McCummiskey, tying the game at 2-2.
Valley Park brought in Copeland, who surrendered a sacrifice fly to Carey, putting the Eagles on top 3-2.
Miller lofted a base hit to left that scored Juergens.
Copeland led off the fifth with a double to left and he scored on a single by Justin Maloney. Maloney took second on an error by Will Allen. Jeramy Shaw followed with an infield single to short, but McCummiskey got Spawr to line into a double play. Fischer Rausch grounded out to third, ending the inning with the Eagles ahead 4-3.
McCummiskey drew a one-out walk in the sixth. Ethan Kackley was brought in as a courtesy runner and moved up to second when Carey hit a grounder that Maloney couldn’t turn into an out. After a wild pitch, Miller drove a two-run single to left.
Juergens added some insurance with a two-run double in the seventh, scoring Jacob Brooks and Noah Bryan.
