McCummiskey Carries No-Hitter Into 7th, Eagles Blank Hermann

Logan McCummiskey was cruising towards a no-hitter Tuesday.

After getting through six innings under 90 pitches, he was three outs from recording a no-no in his season debut.

McCummiskey had TJ Racherbaumer down 1-2, but he stroked a single to left, providing the Bearcats their first hit of the night.

A walk to Trent Anderson ended McCummiskey’s outing, but it was another strong start for the Eagles rotation. Joshua Wiese came in relief, struck out Chet Moeckli, then finished the game with a 4-6-3 double play to give the Eagles a 7-0 win in a Four Rivers Classic pool game.

Sullivan (2-0) drilled 12 hits and drew seven walks against Hermann’s combination of Moeckli and Chase McKague. Moeckli held the Eagles to a single run in a conference game between the teams last April. Sullivan pounded out 10 hits and chased Moeckli after he recorded one out in the fifth.

Cody McKinney had a four-hit night, which included a double, while Jacob Miller roped three singles. Will Allen had a pair of hits and two walks. Allen is 5-5 and has reached base all seven times he has come to the plate through the first two games. Garrett Juergens doubled and singled and Landon Hoffman singled.

Austin Frye was held hitless, but he walked twice and hit a mammoth sacrifice fly to center. Jacob Hatcher, JD McReynolds and Blayten Nolie each drew walks.

The Eagles did damage again with two outs, following a two-out rally that lifted them to a victory in their season opener against MICDS.

Sullivan took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. McKinney singled and Hatcher walked to bring up Allen, who dropped a base hit into shallow center. Frye walked to load the bases, but Moeckli got a strikeout to strand the runners.

Sullivan scored again with two outs in the fourth. Miller lined a single and stole second and third. He scored when Hoffman drove a pitch up the middle.

In the fifth, Juergens chopped a single past third base to score Frye. McReynolds moved up to third and Juergens to second. Hermann pulled Moeckli for McKague, who walked Nolie to load the bases. Miller extended the lead with a two-run single to left. Sullivan went up 5-0.

Hoffman grounded a ball to short and Hermann got the out at second, but the turn to first was off line. Hoffman tried for second and was thrown out on a 3-6. A run crossed the plate to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

McKinney led off the sixth with a single to right. Allen and Frye drew walks to load the bases, then McKague walked McReynolds to bring in another run.

That was a big enough cushion for McCummiskey, who struck out seven and walked five. He retired seven straight after issuing a free pass to start the game, then walked McKague to begin the fourth. McKague stole second with Anderson batting, but the Eagles were able to catch him in a rundown. McCummiskey struck out Anderson to end the inning.

Moeckli started the fifth with a walk and he stole second. McCummiskey fanned Jon Utley, then Aaron Overkamp hit into a 9-4-6 double play.
