Lady Eagles Headed To District Title Game

Union’s defense did just enough to limit Sullivan early, but the Lady Eagles’ firepower eventually overwhelmed their district opponents.

Sullivan had four players finish in double figures in scoring and secured a spot in the Class 4 District 6 championship game with a 52-39 win over the Lady ‘Cats.

Mallory Shetley had 14 points, Clare Shetley had 11 and Bria Jones 10, but Kya Harbour’s 13 points off the bench helped Sullivan (22-4) pull away in the second half.

Harbour was 5-7 from the field and was 3-4 on 3-pointers.

Hanna Johanning scored three points and Katie Creek had one.

Sullivan showed good ball movement against a stingy Union defense that had allowed just 41 points per game. The Lady Eagles had 14 assists on 18 field goals, led by Mallory Shetley with six. Jones had four and Clare Shetley had three.

Up 7-6 after one quarter, Sullivan finally found an offensive groove in the second and took a 24-17 lead into the half.

Early in the third quarter, Jones led Sullivan out of a timeout with a 3-pointer off an assist from Creek. Later, Taylor Seely would get a rebound off a Sullivan miss, but have the ball stripped by Mallory Shetley. She dumped it in for a 32-23 lead.

Emily Gaebe fired a 3-pointer on the next trip down for Union and Kennedy Reeser would score to get the Lady ‘Cats within 32-28.

Sullivan finished the quarter on a turnaround by Clare Shetley and a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Harbour, going up 37-28 entering the fourth quarter.

Johanning’s 3 on the opening possession gave Sullivan its biggest lead, 40-28. Union would never get closer than 10.
