Keogh Nets Game-Winner In Overtime

Eagles win 4-3 against Laquey in home opener

With a 3-2 lead and the clock ticking to zero, Sullivan seemed to be on their way to a win in their home opener Wednesday.

Instead, Laquey tied the game with four seconds left in regulation when Brandon MacDonald netted a goal past a diving Jacob Wiley.
MacDonald had all three of Laquey’s goals.

Sullivan’s bench wanted referees to rule a handball penalty, but the goal stood and the game moved on to overtime.

Momentum had seemingly shifted to the Hornets, but Danny Keogh rescued Sullivan with a header with just 1:25 remaining in the first overtime. Sullivan won 4-3 and remained unbeaten in four games.

The Eagles got off to a fast start thanks to early goals by Jacob Rohrer and Landon Hoffman. Rohrer scored in the eighth minute, his ninth goal of the season.

Hoffman broke away from Laquey’s defender and kicked a sliding goal past Laquey goalkeeper Danny Graves in the 12th minute.

Sullivan dominated possession during the early action, but Laquey answered Hoffman’s goal a minute later.

In the 17th minute, MacDonald scored again to tie the game at 2-2. Laquey set up a corner kick in the 29th minute, but Wiley knocked down the shot. Sullivan would get a corner kick opportunity three minutes later. Laquey defended it, but set up a penalty kick for Rohrer. Taryn Carter jumped in front of Rohrer’s kick to deflect it and steer possession back to the Hornets.

The teams were tied at the end of the half, but Ethan Kackley put Sullivan back on top just 90 seconds in. Laquey spent the next 39 minutes trying and failing to break through against Sullivan’s defense. A penalty kick in the 47th minute didn’t go anywhere.

Sullivan lined up quality shots in the second half. Graves used his height to frustrate the Eagles and spoil their chances. Kackley fired straight ahead and below the crossbar. Graves leapt up to knock the shot away.

Graves made another save on a shot attempt from Keogh in the 72nd minute.

The game came to a stop with six minutes left. Laquey dumped the ball down near the goal line. Jacob Miller tried to keep it away. Trying to avoid a turnover or corner kick, he passed the ball to Wiley in goal. Wiley picked it up and one referee ruled it a goal kick. Laquey’s players and coaches protested the call. The other referee stepped in and after a short discussion with the coaches, ruled an indirect free kick in front of the goal.

Sullivan set up a wall and deflected the ball. Laquey would get two corner kick opportunities to follow, but couldn’t convert either into a deflection or quality shot.

The Eagles nearly put the game away, only to have Graves stifle them again. Rohrer’s shot with 1:20 remaining was deflected by Graves. That set up MacDonald’s game-tying shot.
