Hillsboro Sweeps Lady Eagles

Hillsboro dispatched Sullivan in two sets Thursday, winning 25-14, 25-14.

Sullivan (8-6) rarely had momentum in a match that the Hawks nearly led the entire way. Save for a fast start in the second set, Sullivan played from behind. Hillsboro stunned Sullivan with eight straight winners to reverse a 6-3 deficit into an 11-6 lead.

The Lady Eagles had just 13 kills and Hillsboro defended Sullivan’s serving well, with Riley Lock registering the team’s only ace.

Lock led the team with four kills and added two points, one block and one assist. Rylee Denbow had four points, two assists, one block and one kill.

Katie Creek had two points and two kills. Mallory Shetley had two kills, five assists, one block and one point. Hailey Volkmann had two blocks, one kill and an assist. Kya Harbour had two kills and one point.

Hillsboro led from the opening serve and established a 9-3 lead. Sullivan took the next points, but Mackienzie Baker came up with a kill and Hillsboro added another point. The Lady Eagles called a timeout to regroup.

Lock delivered a kill that helped pull off three straight rallies. Sullivan gave up two of the next three points on service errors and would eventually find themselves down 16-9. Another kill by Lock briefly slowed Hillsboro as Sullivan picked up the next two winners, but a net violation squandered the rally.

Hillsboro would take a 20-11 lead and Sullivan would never get closer. Maddy Krasnesky’s kill set up match point at 24-14 and the Lady Hawks finished on the next rally.

Sullivan showed some spark in the second set. A double block at the net gave the Lady Eagles the first point and they would go up 5-2 on an ace by Lock and a Shetley kill. The tables turned from there. Hillsboro had six straight points to take a 9-6 lead, which necessitated another Sullivan timeout. Unlike the first set, there was no immediate spark from the timeout. Hillsboro picked up two more points before a service error ended the run.

The Lady Eagles climbed within 13-11 when Lock tipped the ball over the net for a point. Hillsboro won the next two rallies, turned it over on a net error, then raced away with the victory. The Hawks ended by winning nine of the next 10 rallies.
