Frye Lifts Eagles Over St. James

Austin Frye delivered the go-ahead run with a one-out double on Monday to give Sullivan a 6-4 victory against St. James.

The Eagles (7-1) were unable to make a 4-1 lead stand, but Frye throttled a 2-0 pitch from Rustin Branum to put Sullivan on top in the fourth inning.

Garrett Juergens added an insurance run with an RBI single in the fifth.

Sullivan ran their winning streak to five games and posted their first Four Rivers Conference victory.

The Eagles allowed just six runs in the first four wins of their streak. Starter Logan McCummiskey was tagged for one run in the first and three in third before wiping out St. James in the final four innings.

McCummiskey retired the last 12 batters he faced. He finished with nine strikeouts and allowed just four hits and one walk.

Due to wet field conditions in St. James, the game was moved to Bank of Sullivan Ballpark and the Eagles were the road team.

They went on top early as Jacob Miller led off with a single, the first of two hits. Miller, who is hitting .536 through the season’s first nine games, stole second and advanced to third on a fly ball by Frye. He crossed the plate when Cody McKinney singled to left. McKinney scored on a passed ball to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

St. James got one of the runs back as Andrew Branson and Drew Moritz singled and advanced into scoring position on a bunt by No. 3 hitter Dyllan Gibson. Gibson was safe on a fielder’s choice, loading the bases.

McCummiskey struck out Trey Riley, but Lyndon Carson’s sacrifice fly brought in Branson and made it 2-1.

Miller led off the third with a walk and a steal. He went to third on a groundout by Frye, then scored on another RBI single by McKinney.

JD McReynolds kept the inning alive with a two-out single to center and Juergens popped a double to left to put the Eagles up 4-1.

St. James responded with a three-run inning to tie. Derek Skaggs’ two-out single up the middle scored Moritz to even the score.

Frye put Sullivan back on top after a one-out single by Blayten Nolie and a walk to Miller. Collin Immekus, who was courtesy running for Nolie, scored on Frye’s double. Miller was tagged out at home.

Juergens padded the lead in the fifth when he drilled an RBI double to left that scored McReynolds.
