Freshmen, Earney Shutout Elsberry

Joshua Earney threw seven shutout innings Saturday, leading the Sullivan Post 18 freshmen to an 8-0 win over Elsberry Post 226 and tightening their grip on second place in the Ninth District standings.

After Saturday’s victory, Post 18 was 11-1 in the standings with just Sunday’s league finale against St. Charles remaining.

The win helped Sullivan rebound from a loss to Washington earlier in the week. It was Sullivan’s first loss in the league.

Earney threw just 61 pitches against Elsberry. He struck out nine and allowed three hits without a walk.

Sullivan tallied just six hits, but drew eight walks. The game started as it seems most games do — with Post 18 taking a first-inning lead.

Garrett Juergens led off with a single and went to second on a balk. Joshua Wiese walked, but Elsberry starter Dylan Niemeyer got the next two outs. He couldn’t get out of the inning without damage, though. Noah Bryan lined a triple into the right field gap to score two runs and stake Post 18 to a lead that was never close to being threatened.

Earney, who had allowed a leadoff single in the first, retired the next seven batters before Tristan Charlton’s infield hit to short with one out in the third. Earney got out of it when Niemeyer tapped a ball back to him. He threw high to Wiese at second, but Wiese was able to leap and snag it, stepping on second and turning the double play.

Earney would go on to retire the next 11 batters he faced until Hunter Lavy’s one-out single in the seventh.

Sullivan supported him with runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth.

Trevor Abernathy had a one-out single to score Alec Bell in the fourth. Wiese walked to leadoff the fifth. After Collin Immekus smashed a fly ball deep to center for a long flyout, Earney walked. Bell was sent in to run for Earney. The runners moved into scoring position on a groundout by Bryan, which allowed Wiese to score on a passed ball with Blayten Nolie batting. Sullivan went up 5-0.

Carter Dace singled to start eh sixth inning. Abernathy and Jacob Brooks walked to load the bases. Juergens struck out, but Wiese, Immekus and Earney drew three straight walks and Sullivan scored three runs without putting the ball in play.
