Eagles Rally Over Warrenton With Dominant Second Half

Jacob Rohrer scored twice — including the game-winner — and Ethan Kackley added an insurance goal Wednesday as Sullivan overcame a slow start to win 3-1 against Warrenton.

Sullivan (8-5-1) went into halftime trailing 1-0 and unable to covert several scoring opportunities against the Warriors.

“They were the more aggressive team,” said Sullivan head coach Bill Kackley. “We came out flat and they took it to us.”

Kackley said the game lacked “flow” in the first half due to the referees calling a tight game. “We cannot control that and we cannot get caught up in that.”

Sullivan responded to the slow start and controlled the game from there.

Rohrer tied the game just four minutes into the second half when Ethan Kackley booted a free kick to Andrew Bell, who passed to Rohrer. Rohrer finished the goal in the net, but he also was called for a foul in the process. The Eagles were without Rohrer for the next eight minutes.

“The referee said (Rohrer) shoved his arm after scoring,” Kackley said. “He was attacking the goal and going forward.”

Sullivan took the lead in the 61st minute when Rohrer rolled an outside shot past Warrenton goalkeeper Paul Sanders, tucking the ball in the corner of the net.

One minute later, Rohrer had a chance to add to the lead, but he was pulled down by Sanders. Sanders was shown a red card and forced to leave the game.

Rohrer received a penalty kick, only to watch Warrenton’s new keeper Will Nordstrom cradle the shot.

The Warriors, who rarely had possession during the second half, were presented with a scoring chance in the 68th minute. Sullivan’s defenders thwarted a deflection following a free kick and kept the Warriors from setting up again.

Down to the final three minutes, Sullivan scored when Warrenton knocked a corner kick from Kackley into their own goal.
