Eagles Qualify 10 For State, Finish Third At Districts

While the Eagles fell just shy of their first-ever district wrestling championship Saturday, their individual successes raised the bar.

Sullivan will send a program-record 10 wrestlers to the Class 2 state meet this week at the Mizzou Arena. Three wrestlers — Dillon Witt, Isaac Peregoy and Trey Eplin — won district championships in their respective weight classes.

Ty Shetley, Kobie Blankenship and Evan Shetley were second. Trevor Hamblin took third. Joey Lewis, Jonathan Krygiel and Tristan Brown were fourth.

Ian Kilburn, who took sixth at state last year, was unable to participate due to an injury.

“We knew it was going to be a tough road to win the district title when we lost Ian to a neck injury, but it was still within reach if we put all the pieces together properly,” said Eagles head coach Matt Peregoy.

“We have several guys sitting in good position to do some damage at the state tournament next weekend and bring home some medals,” Peregoy said. “It is exciting to see so many guys with the opportunity to be involved in the state tournament after a long season of hard work.”

Lewis, Peregoy, Eplin, Ty Shetley, Krygiel and Hamblin will be making their first state appearances.

Evan Shetley and Kobie Blankenship qualified for the third straight year. Witt and Brown will be making their second trips.

Witt (106) had to wrestle just one match, pinning Ste. Genevieve’s Gavin Gross in 3:22 to win the championship. Witt received three byes to get to the finals.
