Dutchgirls Take District Crown Over Sullivan In Straight Sets

After a physically and mentally exhausting semifinal victory over St. Clair one night earlier, the Lady Eagles were out of gas.

With a chance to win their fourth district title since 2016, Sullivan instead fell to host Owensville in straight sets.

The Dutchgirls won 25-22 to take the Class 3 District 3 crown.

Sullivan had played eight sets one night earlier against Cuba and St. Clair, the tournament’s No. 1 seed.

Head coach Sarah Rochleau said her team felt the after-effects of such a dramatic night.

“We just didn’t quite have what it was going to take to beat a very solid Owensville squad,” Rochleau said. “Congrats to Coach Ridenhour and the Dutchgirls on their district championship win.”

She believed Sullivan was “tired” not just physically, but emotionally after rallying from two sets down to beat St. Clair.

“We stayed right with Owensville the whole time, but just couldn’t string together enough points to take the lead.”

Emma Brune led Sullivan with 13 kills and four points.

Owensville had 47 kills to Sullivan’s 31.

Olivia Witt provided seven kills and seven assists, while Cassidy Cunningham and Abby Wiegers each had four.

Parker Williamson led Sullivan with nine points and two aces.

Morgan Clonts had eight points and one ace.

Raegan Johnson finished with four points.

Saige Carey had two points, three blocks and 22 assists.

The Dutchgirls were led by Haley Coello, who had 14 kills.

It was Owensville’s first district volleyball title since 1979.
