Borgia Walks Off With A Walk

Sullivan was three outs from a victory against St. Francis Borgia on Monday, but a messy seventh inning allowed the Knights to walk off with a walk.

Josh Wiese served up a five-pitch base on balls to Joe Schmidt and Borgia completed a 6-5 comeback. The Eagles committed two errors in the inning.

The game pitted two teams off to fast starts and potentially headed for a meeting in the district tournament.

Sullivan (8-3) had command of the game through the top of the fourth when they built up a 4-0 lead. Borgia struck with three runs in the home half of the inning, only to watch Sullivan claw back one of the runs in the fifth.

The Eagles continued to put their opponents behind early, as they jumped Schmidt for two runs in the first on a two-out, two-run double by Jacob Hatcher.

Schmidt gave up an infield single to Cody McKinney, then walked JD McReynolds. A wild pitch pushed the runners into scoring position and Hatcher drove them in.

Logan McCummiskey got the start for Sullivan and pitched in and out of trouble. The defense turned three double plays in the first three innings.

Schmidt lined into an inning-ending double play in the first after a leadoff single by Jack Czeschin. Tyler Glosemeyer lined into a double play after Spencer Hunter and Louie Eckelkamp opened the second inning with a double and a single.

Brandon Stahlman led off the third with a single and Nick Helfrich was hit by a pitch. Czeschin grounded into a fielder’s choice, advancing Stahlman to third.

Bryce Mayer hit a liner to center that was caught by Jacob Miller, who fired to third, doubling off Stahlman.

Sullivan continued the two-out damage in the fourth when Blayten Nolie doubled to left to score Garrett Juergens. He advanced to third and scored on a single by Miller.

Miller, who had a four-hit game, upped his average to .583.

Borgia powered their way back into the game with the long ball. Schmidt led off the fourth with a solo shot to right, then Eckelkamp drilled a two-run homer over the fence in center, cutting Sullivan’s lead to 4-3.

The Eagles added a run in the fifth when McKinney, who also had four hits, led off with a single. He advanced to second on an error at second by Czeschin, then tagged up to third on a fly out by Hatcher. Juergens drove him with a sacrifice fly to center, extending the lead to 5-3.

McCummiskey settled in after a rocky start to the fourth and retired seven straight before allowing a walk to Hunter in the sixth. He ended his day with another double play.

Sullivan turned to Wiese for the final three outs. Molitor led off by reaching on an error by McKinney, then Stahlman doubled to center. Helfrich reached on another error by McKinney and Czeschin tied the game with a two-run double to right.

Wiese beaned Bryce Mayer to load the bases back up, then Schmidt ended it by drawing a free pass.
