Sophie M. Valley, 97, of Bourbon, MO, passed away Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan.

Sophie Martha Boyer was born on December 3, 1919 in Washington County, MO to the late Jerome and Mary Grace (Bates) Boyer. She was raised in Tiff, MO and came to Sullivan in 1973. Sophie was united in marriage to Joseph George Valley on April 27, 1938 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tiff, MO and together, they had eleven children. She was employed as a cook by the Sullivan Community Hospital for many years. Sophie enjoyed watching T.V., doing housework, writing letters and gabbing on the phone. She was a faithful member of St. Anthony and Holy Martyrs Catholic Church until she became ill health kept her from attending. Mrs. Valley’s family described her as a real “Corker.”

Sophie is survived by seven of her children, George Valley of Bourbon, MO; Bill Valley and wife Lucille of TX; Rita Bradley of Lowell, IN; Theresa Whitford and husband Wade of Fort Leonard Wood, MO; Christine Brake and husband Phil of Bourbon, MO; Margie Patterson of Sullivan, MO; and Charlotte Valley of Washington, MO; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; special friend, Bonnie Tullock of Bourbon, MO; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph George Valley; two sons, Joseph and Bob Valley; two daughters, Mary Virginia Blum and Laverne Lindblum; her parents, Jerome and Mary Grace (Bates) Boyer; one grandson, Joe Valley; one great-grandson, Isaiah Patterson; son-in-law, Elliot Bradley; two brothers, Bob and Mike Boyer; four sisters, Hallie Cassidy, Stella Pashea, Sarah Barlow and Clara Gross.

Visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, November 24, 2017 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at 1 p.m., Friday, November 24, 2017 at Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church with Father Tim Henderson officiating. Interment followed in Holy Martyrs Cemetery.
