Roy L. “Vernie” Damron, 80, of Sullivan, MO, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at SSM Health St. Clare Hospital – Fenton.

Roy was born in Illinois, on October 23, 1939, to the late Charles Frances and Velta Irene (Burlison) Damron. He honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corp. After his honorable discharge, Roy worked in the construction industry and as a mechanic. He then worked for the former Chrysler Corporation in Fenton for 23 years, retiring in 1992. Roy was united in marriage to Dawn Rae Helferstay on June 21, 1996, in Union. They were blessed with 24 years of marriage together. 

Roy was a man who would help anyone in need. He was also a lifelong learner, researcher and read up on many different subjects. He was especially interested in information concerning his health. Roy enjoyed tinkering with anything and could always be found working on a car. In his younger days, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was on both pool and bowling leagues. Roy attended Full Gospel Assembly of God in Sullivan. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

Roy is survived by his wife, Dawn Damron of Sullivan, MO; three daughters: Sheryl Musgrove of Houston, TX, Stacie Engel and husband Thomas of Owensville, MO, and Stephanie Damron- Whipple of Alton, IL; four stepchildren: Daniel Lisenburg of Anchorage, AK, Susan Shimkovitz and husband Bryan of Wichita, KS, Dwayne Gamache of MS, and Richard Whitten of AL; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, plus one more on the way; a host of step grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Damron of Young, AZ and Gene Damron of AR; five sisters: Kathy Paine of Midwest City, OK, Dorothy McKim and husband Jack of Snowflake, AZ, Cindy Conner and husband Harold of Young, AZ, Wilma Crossin of IL, and Barb McKimm and husband Duane of Cuba, MO; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Velta Damron.

Funeral services were 12 p.m., Monday, August 31, 2020 at Full Gospel Assembly of God, 900 Acid Mine Rd., Sullivan, MO, with Pastor Ryan Martin officiating. The service will conclude with full Military Honors. 

Visitation was held from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m., prior to the services at Full Gospel Assembly of God. 

Interment will be held in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Goreville, IL, at 1 p.m., Tuesday, September 1, 2020. 

Memorial contributions in Roy’s memory may be made to Full Gospel Assembly of God.
