Mason L. Clayton

Mason L. Clayton, 93, of Sullivan, MO, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau, MO.

Mason was born on March 2, 1924 in Hopkins Co., KY to the late Gabriel L. and Ruby (Brown) Clayton. He grew up and graduated from Hanson High School in 1941. He honorably served his county in the United States Army from September 30, 1944 to August 31, 1946. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal. In 1958, Mason became employed for McDonald Douglas, where he worked on fighter aircrafts; he retired thirty-one years later in August 1989.

Mason enjoyed camping, gardening and hanging out with good friends and family. His favorite hangout spot was the Sullivan VFW Hall. On any given day, he could be found there hanging out with his friend, Waldo, who is 93 and still with us. Mason was a very proud man and presented himself very neatly. He dressed nicely, even when he was at home, he would have his shirt tucked in, be wearing a belt, nice shoes, clean shaven and his hair combed. When others would ask Mason how he looked so good at age 93, he would reply, “Good whiskey and wild women!” Mason will be missed by his family and friends.

Mason is survived by three daughters, Stacy Clayton and significant other, Dennis Van Buren of Ste. Genevieve, MO; Sherry Tomes and husband, Kenny of Madisonville, KY; Dorothy Hudson and husband, William King of Kansas City, MO; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mason was preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel L. and Ruby (Brown) Clayton; one brother, Larry Clayton; three sisters, Norma Roach, Frida McCormick and Lois Rudd; one great-grandchild, Anthony Harrellston.
