Hallie G. Johanning, age 93, of Leslie, MO, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Hallie Gertrude was born May 6, 1926 in Leslie, MO, the daughter of William Franklin and Victoria Caledonia (Armistead) Lawrence. She grew up and attended school in Labadie, and then Washington. She was in the 1944 graduating class at Sullivan High School. Hallie was united in marriage to Vertis (Fritz) Johanning on October 25, 1945 in Sullivan, MO. They were blessed with four children:  Gary, Karen, Linda, and Richard. The family moved to St. Louis for a short time, prior to moving to their farm, in Leslie in 1953. Living on the farm, Hallie enjoyed gardening, canning, and raising her family. Fritz and Hallie were members of Evergreen Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Her faith was a very important part of her life. Hallie had a tremendous heart for children. She embraced the opportunity she had to babysit her grandchildren throughout much of their lives growing up. She was also involved with Spring Bluff 4-H, enjoyed bowling, and watching her children and grandchildren’s sports and activities.  

Hallie is survived by her husband, Vertis (Fritz) Johanning of Leslie, MO; four children, Gary L. Johanning and wife, Nancy, of Sullivan, MO, Karen Head and husband, Mark, of Leslie, MO, Linda Clonts and husband, Charlie, of Sullivan, MO, and Richard Johanning of Sullivan, MO; 15 grandchildren:  Cindy Wiles (Tim Davis) of Sullivan, MO, Skip McDermott (Lisa) of Sullivan, MO, Michelle Parks (Chris) of Sullivan, MO, Monica Craft (Chris) of Leslie, MO, Jarrod Head (Natalie) of Leslie, MO, Bryan Head (Angela) of Sullivan, MO, Kristin Clonts (Corey) of Sullivan, MO, Briana Perry (Brad) of Sullivan, MO, Abbie Clonts of Sullivan, MO, Mollie Fancher (Bryan) of Cuba, MO, Chad Clonts of Sullivan, MO, Kory Johanning (Lauren) of Greensboro, NC, Megan Johanning of Sullivan, MO, Josh Johanning of Sullivan, MO, and Lauren Johanning of Sullivan, MO; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; other relatives and many friends. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Franklin and Victoria Caledonia (Armistead) Lawrence; her granddaughter, Alicia Key; four sisters, Ina Briscoe, Nellie Immekus, Irene Vogt, and Marie Davis; and three brothers, Richard “Bert” Lawrence, Ervin Lawrence, and Claude Lawrence.

Funeral Services were conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, with Pastor Tom Rudloff as the officiant. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Leslie, MO.

Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to:  Evergreen Baptist Church in Leslie, MO, or to the Alicia Key Memorial Scholarship Fund.
