George Alex Delashmit

George Alex Delashmit, of Bourbon, MO, was promoted to Glory on August 18, 2017 at the age of 95 years. George was born on January 27, 1922 in Newburg, MO to Alexander and Belle (Earp) Delashmit. He was baptized in the Newburg Baptist Church as a teen, and after graduating Newburg High School, he enlisted in the US Navy and was promoted to Ensign as a Navy pilot. He was a member of VT-13, and flew a TBM in the South Pacific, assigned to the Ticonderoga and later in Hawaii. George and Vera Bernice (Bohannon) were married in Fallon, NV on May 22, 1945, and adopted two children, George Michael and Tami Sue.

After leaving the service, George worked for the USGA in Rolla, and later for Rolla Drug store where he was convinced to go to work for Sharpe & Dohme Drug Company which merged with Merck and Company. George worked as a pharmaceutical representative for 33 years and made his home in Quincy, IL until 1980.

George and Bernice were known as avid Square Dancers for 30 years, belonging to several clubs, traveling across the country, and hosting competitive square dancing at their home for many years.

After retirement, George and Bernice move to Carrier, MS where they stayed until moving to Bourbon, MO in 2000 to be closer to his son and daughter-in-law. He was a regular at the community center, always ready with a joke and smile. George had many George-isms, and when asked how he was, his answer “meaner than a Hog” meant he was doing well, and give me the facts was “You can’t shoot a squirrel behind the branch.”

George was preceded in death by his wife Bernice; daughter Tami Fisher; parents; 5 brothers and 3 sisters; and grandson TSGT Ryan Delashmit. He is survived by his son, Michael and wife Amy (Clow) of Bourbon, 4 grandchildren, Whitney Baumgartner and husband Cory, of Quincy, IL, Chris Fisher of Washington, MO, Jason Delashmit and wife Jessie (Grey) of Bourbon, MO; 4 great-grandchildren, Brandon, Courtney, Jackson, and Parker; nieces, nephews, and a host of friends and church family. George’s wit and humor will be missed.

A memorial service was held at Bourbon Free Will Baptist Church on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 2 p.m. with full military honors and Reverend Leroy Bryant officiating. Inurnment will be in Green Mount Cemetery in Quincy, IL.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bourbon Community Center are requested in the name of George Delashmit.
